Morgan Spurlock

The Tucson Cactus & Succulent Society presents “Plants for the Sonoran Desert Hobbyist” April 19th & 20th The Tucson Cactus & Succulent Society presents “Plants for the Sonoran Desert Hobbyist,” a public Biennial Plant Conference, April 19 & 20, at the Hotel Tucson City Center Conference Suite Resort, 475 N. Granada Ave., Downtown Tucson.

Spurlock goes ‘Inside’ for CNN When Morgan Spurlock shot to fame, he was gorging himself on McDonald’s three times a day to see what happens if he lived off only that – and he ate the largest size that workers pushed – in “Super Size Me.” No shock that Spurlock could have inflicted permanent damage had he not stopped. In his CNN documentary series, “Morgan Spurlock Inside Man,” Spurlock quaffs supplements and exercises. In “Futurism,” airing Sunday, April 20, Spurlock focuses on those striving for immortality. Since shooting that episode, Spurlock has lost 25 pounds. “I am still losing weight,” he says. “I am not eating carbohydrates, no bread, no pasta, no sugar. I feel better than I ever have. Last night I had wine at dinner. You have got to enjoy yourself.” He attends a party in California where people try various ways to extend their lives. Some take hundreds of supplements daily; others are on the paleo diet. It would be a stronger show if Spurlock asked more questions such as: Why eat like a caveman? Why take so many vitamins? Spurlock has an incredibly thorough physical exam, and the doctor tells him to shed 18 pounds, take supplements and exercise. Spurlock’s goal is “to delve into issues that affect all of us, maybe in ways we don’t even realize,” he says. “A lot of times we see headlines and think they don’t affect us. What the show does a great job of doing is showing how they do affect us.” Last week’s Season 2 premiere was devoted to celebrity. Spurlock tried to be a paparazzo. Unless you’re Angelina, Jen or a successful actor who dares to take the children to the playground, it’s hard to see how paparazzi affect most people. “What a lot of people don’t realize is every time you buy a People, an Us, a Star, it does touch you,” Spurlock says. “As you turn on the TV and watch ‘TMZ’ or ‘Access Hollywood,’ people are complicitly involved without recognizing their involvement.” Additional episodes look at religion, UFOs and paying student athletes.

Thousands of cacti & other succulents from around the world will be featured including Adeniums, Echinocereus (hedgehogs) Trichocereus hybrids and terrestrial bromeliads, Dyckias and Hechtias. There will be 5 speakers & numerous choices for the four workshops (2 each day). The speakers include Peter Breslin (Echinocereus), Mark Dimmitt (Adeniums), Dennis Cathcart (Dyckias), Andy Siekkinen (Hechtias) and Mark Sitter (Trichocereus). Saturday, April 19 workshops include New Things to Try with Cactus in the Kitchen; Growing & Propagating Hechias & Other Succulent Bormeliads; Propagation & Cultivation; Spines, Steel & Clay: Making Container

For more information & registration, call (520) 256-2447 & go to www. tucsoncactus.org. For non-members, cost of the conference is $150 for all 5 speakers, 4 workshops, 2 lunches, Sat. night dinner and all public events. Individual event workshop tickets are $15 each. The Saturday lunch & speaker ticket deli buffet is $15 each. The Saturday dinner & speaker ticket guest or non-TCSS member is $25 with the Sunday lunch speaker ticket and taco bar, $15.

The Sonoran X Conference will feature plant programs, workshops, a huge plant show, silent auction and more. This is a special chance to also shop for excellent plants, pottery, books and art!

A brainy new medical drama

CITY! SECTION

By Jacqueline cutler

When she’s on her medications, Dr. Catherine Black is brilliant. Off her meds, she may be even more brilliant, but she’s dangerous, at least to herself. And that’s the tension of ABC’s newest medical procedural, “Black Box,” premiering Thursday, April 24. Black (Kelly Reilly) is a neurologist and medical director of a neurological center known as The Cube. Black is gorgeous and involved with two dashing men. She also happens to be bipolar, which she keeps a secret at work. Her dilemma is whether she wants to live a proscribed life, on many medications and engaged to her restaurateur boyfriend, or off them, riding the waves of inspiration that engulf her and having fierce sex with other men. When manic, she loves life on the edge, and she gets so perilously close, it’s inevitable that she will fall. Yet it’s then that she feels completely alive. On a recent frigid day, at a sprawling New York university, which asked ABC to keep its identity secret because apparently allowing a show to film is declasse, Reilly hurries down a ramp, her white lab coat catching air. “She is complicated,” Reilly says of her character. “She has many different sides to her. I get to play many different women in one character. An unedited side of her comes out. There’s the medicated and the unmedicated side of her. There’s the side that is nurturing and loving and the side that wants to break everything in the room.” It’s revealed in the pilot that Black has a teenager, Esme (Siobhan Williams). Black’s brother and sister-in-law have raised her as their own, and the girl doesn’t know who her biological mother is. Reagan Black (Laura Fraser, “Breaking Bad”) is terrified that the girl loves her aunt Catherine more than the woman she knows as Mom. Soon, she realizes Esme may be exhibiting signs of being bipolar. At work, Black connects with patients on a deep level. Each week features real cases, and when patients are on-screen, their problems are shown from their perspectives. In an upcoming episode, a woman turning 50 is acting odd. She’s fighting the effects of aging by constantly exercising, but she’s behaving strangely and, it turns out, only seeing half of what’s in front of her. Doctors cannot figure out why until Black makes the connection. The patient and Dr. Ian Bickman (Ditch Davey) know each other from volunteering at a homeless shelter. Black realizes the woman had contracted tuberculosis, which was altering her brain. Drs. Bickman and Black are having an affair. “He is at the top of his game,” Davey says. “I see him as being almost machinelike.”

TUCSON MUSEUM OF ART – ROSE CABAT AT 100: A RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION OF CERAMICS Thru September 14th Tucson Museum of Art celebrates the artistry of Rose Cabat--an American studio ceramicist living in Tucson. Considered one of the most important ceramic artists of the Mid-century Modernist movement, Cabat is best known for her innovative glazes on small porcelain pots called “feelies” which she developed in the 1960s. Her organic forms often resemble the shape of onions and figs, and her glazes range from organic to jewel tones. This exhibition will be a survey of her different styles from the 1960s until the present to celebrate the year of her 100th birthday. Event Location: 140 N. ABOUT THE FILM

,

Herb: Following on the heels of the controversial Nymphomaniac Volume 1, the second part of Lars von Trier’s epic tale is now out. While the first film had some intriguing parts, I found Volume 2 to be too much. In fact, I struggled to make it through the film, and would not recommend it to anyone.

‘Bears’ John C. Reilly narrates as a film crew documents a year in the life of a bear family as two impressionable young cubs are taught life’s most important lessons. (G - 100 minutes)

‘Joe’ Nicolas Cage plays an ex-con - the unlikeliest of role models - who meets a 15-year-old boy (Tye Sheridan) and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin. (R - 117 minutes) Joseph: Although its artistic qualities are occasionally a bit overbearing and its ugly reflection of Southern gothic may make it impossible for some to stomach the movie through to the end, “Joe” is a powerful piece of cinema that redefines what star Nicolas Cage is capable of conveying with a performance.

Joseph: “Bears” may look adorable at first glance but before long it becomes unbearably boring. The new documentary lacks the entertainment value needed to keep audiences interested and engaged. A repetitious cycle of a mama bear seeking salmon for her cubs is used here in lieu of any actual story.

‘Heaven is for Real’ Greg Kinnear and Kelly Reilly portray a real-life married couple whose son (Connor Corum) claims to have visited Heaven during a near death experience, recounting the details of his amazing journey with childlike innocence and speaking matter-offactly about things that happened before his birth. (PG - 100 minutes)

Herb: Violence in service of a story is often essential–think Pulp Fiction for example. But in Joe, an otherwise solid story of a homeless boy and his surrogate father figure– played aptly by Nic Cage–the violence actually detracted from the story for me. It is good to see Cage back in action in this dark tale, but I left the screening wishing for less in a few scenes.

Joseph: One’s enjoyment of “Heaven is for Real” hinges on their willingness to take its story as gospel without asking any questions or challenging its far-fetched hypotheses with any number of more logical explanations. Granted, it is well meaning and harmless but ultimately a little annoying and anticlimactic.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Actor Marlon Wayans (‘A Haunted House 2’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“Malcolm left Kisha and he has started a new relationship. He tried a different flavor because he felt like his crazy, psycho girlfriend kind of spooked him. So he went a different way and he went for Megan, who is played by Jaime Pressly. She has two children ... and the daughter is going through a teenage thing. She has got a box that is haunted. It is possessed. And the son has got an imaginary friend who is getting him in all kinds of trouble - like drinking vodka. Worst imaginary friend ever.

“On top of that, they move into a brand new house, which is haunted, and has this little, crazy, creepy doll that Malcolm winds up running from because it is a stalker doll that he probably shouldn’t have done what he did to her. On top of all that, his possessed ex-girlfriend moves next-door. So it has got a lot of complications.

“It is a fun little journey. The sociopolitical message is, ‘Get your [butt] to the theater and laugh. Be a teen again. Don’t worry about your bills. Don’t worry about all of the problems of the world. Don’t worry about anything except allowing yourself to just be silly, have fun, let your hair down and laugh - laugh, laugh, laugh.’ That’s all! This movie is not going to change your life. Hopefully it will just change your mood and make you happy.” - Marlon Wayans

TUCSON’S LOFT CINEMA: HOME OF INDEPENDENT FILM Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow By Herb Stratford

nationwide, for sneak peek screenings.

Long-time Tucsonans will remember the original location of The Loft Cinema, at East 6th Street at Freemont, on the southern edge of the University of Arizona campus. From the late 1960’s until 1991 the quirky upstairs theatre showed European “art cinema” and was the only non-mainstream movie theatre in town. In 1991 the theatre moved to its current location on East Speedway, where it has grown by leaps and bounds ever since. The rise of independent (non-studio) cinema in the U.S. has been both a boon and a challenge to theatres like the Loft, who often struggle to get titles that their audiences want. Part of that challenge is convincing distributors that there is an audience waiting to see the films.

The Loft is also a work in progress, with the recent addition of a new stateof-the-art auditorium in an adjacent building, The Loft now boasts three indoor screens and hosts over 150,000 film-lovers a year. Technological upgrades have been made to all projection systems and more are in the works with a capital campaign aiming to add more screens and upgrades in the near future. Additionally, the Loft has a killer concession stand with pizza, beer, wine and the usual snacks on hand. If you are a film fan, you must be a Loft fan as there is no better place to catch the best films, than at The Loft Cinema. Coming to ‘The Loft’

Happily, the Loft has established a sterling reputation and manages to get most of the films that audiences in much larger cities, take for granted. Additionally, the Loft has managed to garner a reputation among filmmakers as a great place to show a film, so Tucson audiences get unprecedented interaction with directors, producers and stars of many films every year in post screening Q and A sessions. But The Loft is not just about the newest art house fare; they also have a robust schedule of classic film screenings, cult film screenings and community events every month. They are also home to many locallygrown film festivals–including their own–which takes place each fall featuring dozens of films culled from other festivals, or about to be released

‘Make Your Move’… Red Carpet L.A. Premiere By Randy Montgomery ‘Make Your Move’ had its Red Carpet Premiere at Pacific’s The Grove in Los Angeles. In attendance were Hollywood celebrities such as Jenna Elfman and Toni Basil. In addition, stars of the film were eager to speak with reporters. Cast members of the popular ABC series ‘Dancing With the Stars’ came to support their friend Derek Hough who takes the film’s lead. “This is a whole new world. It was incredible to be a part of. It’s really cool to be a

part of something where dancing is in the forefront,” Hough told the media. Co-star and Korean Pop Star BoA’s presence was made well known by hordes of excited fans waiting to see her. Director Duane Adler (Writer, ‘Step Up’, ‘Save the Last Dance’) was happy to be there as well. “Right now I’m floating. It has been a long journey and a lot of hard work. He was not alone in creating the final product. “I had the tools to help tell the story. I got to talk to the choreographer, talk with the actors, talk with the DP, talk with the production designer and create a world of vision. That was incredibly exciting for me. What was even more exciting was to collaborate with such incredibly creative people. We also had an incredible music team. We have some phenomenal songs in this movie.” The film seeks to speak to a new generation of audiences through dance, music and love through the story of two aspiring dancers (Hough and BoA) who have one shot to “make their move.” “This movie is a romance,” says Adler. “This movie is a love story. This is a movie about love winning out.”

Bike Paths of Tucson - “The Loop” It is April, which is national bike month! This week is particularly full of fun, two-wheeled events and adventures! If you are a rider or are interested in getting started check out www.bikfesttucson. com. There are tons of events around, unique themed group rides, bike in movies, as well as freebies and discounts for riders. The main complaint I hear from people about riding bikes is that they are afraid to ride on the city streets. What many people do not realize is that there is a whole loop of paths for runners and bikers that run along streets and rivers, under and over bridges and these paths make for a really fun and safe ride without the hassle of cars, traffic lights or road conditions. To check out the paths and routes nearest you got to http://

webcms.pima.gov/government/the_ loop/. Tucson’s Rillito river path is one of the most commonly used bikeways because of its central location and the fact that there is shopping and dining along the way. This trail is an awesome way to commute east to west (heading a little north) above central Tucson and escape the traffic with some fun inclines and descents along the way. This route also has parallel dirt paths for mountain bikers, runners and walkers. TheRillito River Path is 12 miles from end to end or a 24 mile round trip, which runs from Craycroftroad all the way to east 1-10. This path passes water fountains, bathrooms, rest areas, parks, a raceway, and the Tucson Racquet club which has a great restaurant that is open to the public. There is not much shade but there are gorgeous mountain and desert views for photography buffs.Aviation Bikeway is another great path from commuting north to south and can get you downtown via rattlesnake bridge. The trail is mostly level with about 100 feet of elevation gain heading south. There are water fountains along the way and you cross a few bridges but

are walled off from Aviation-Barraza Highway noise for a calm and peaceful ride. There is also a Santa Cruz River bikeway that I have never had the pleasure of using but I have heard wonderful things about it and that it is great for commuting north to south near the freeway. Tucson is one of the most bike friendly cities in the USA, so get a map and take advantage of our biking loop that we have developed over the years. It’s April, so get outside and ride Tucson! For more information and pictures of bike riding and hiking in Tucson check out my Facebook page “Take a Stroll With Niccole” or for questions and comments you can email me at takeastrollwithniccole@ gmail.com.

of “KiTcHen casino” oN FooD NETWorK •Had you started out wanting to be on TV?

No. I never thought of it. Eleven years ago, a friend of mine, this girl I went to college with, she called me about a new show with Donald Trump about entrepreneurs. I went and next the thing I know they sent me to L.A., and then I am in New York City filming the first season of “Apprentice.” I remember telling my buddy if I could ride this for six months. And then Donald kept having me on as a judge, and one thing led to another and I got a call from A&E, and I did, “We Mean Business.” Then I hosted a morning show, “In the Loop,” me and Kim Coles. We did cooking segments and workout segments. I learned to read a teleprompter. From there we got asked to do “Guiliana & Bill.” We are almost at 100 episodes of that show. And here we go with “Kitchen Casino.” This is certainly not what I expected. I was into real estate. I was always an entrepreneur. I still continue to do that.
