They’ve already amassed more than a dozen demos of songs for their debut album, which they plan to release later this year. “We record live to tape,” says Adam. “What you hear is what you get. It’s honest and that’s what we’re about. We’re just doing our own thing. This show also marks his 6th ever performance at US Airways Center -- which earns him the honor of being the first-ever inductee as a US Airways Center Entertainment Legend. “We are extremely happy to have Billy return to his home away from home here in Phoenix, for his 6th appearance at the arena since it opened in 1992. From the earliest days of his boyhood until his untimely death, gospel music always held a special place in the heart of Elvis Presley. Before he became the most famous entertainer the world has ever known, as a young man Elvis wanted nothing more than to sing bass in a gospel group. Starring Robert Shaw and a 12-piece band with a gospel quartet performing such hits as “Peace In The Valley,” “Amazing Grace,” and of course the title track “How Great Thou Art,” you’re sure to find inspiration and lots of great memories in this wonderful music. Workout like a Warrior By Andy Bauman

Engage your mind & spirit to reach the pinnacle of conditioning Before you jump into any workout routine there are many factors to consider, one of them should be goal setting. Do you want to get stronger? Improve your cardio? Become more flexible? Lose/gain weight? Or all four? Most importantly, we are all looking for that common result: to look and feel better. Exercise will improve your quality of life in many ways by: relieving stress, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and reducing the risk of diabetes to name just a few. Another important component alongside exercise is nutrition. Combining these two elements enables you to reach the ultimate goal: a greater sense of wellbeing. Two aspects of training that are often forgotten about are the mind and spirit. To reach the pinnacle of conditioning

you must incorporate the physical aspect with mind and spirit. The mind thinks it, the body follows the mind and spirit develops. The goal is to have everything work synergistically, then that sleeping warrior inside you comes out and hones all aspects of your life. “ A warriors constant companion is the inner strength of not imagining anything that cannot be overcome,” – Grandmaster Andy Bauman The most important thing to do is to start and start now, not next week, but now. If you haven’t exercised in a while start off slow and build on that and as your strength and endurance improves you can increase time and repetitions and add new exercises. If you’ve been sedentary for a while, now is the perfect time to get going. “I have to get in shape first” is just an excuse holding you back. If you have been active, remember to set new goals so you can get to the next level. Change the order of your routine,

add a degree of difficulty and be open to change. Find a trainer that will challenge you. The only thing that stops you is you. No excuses do it, it’s time for you to take control. REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Dom Hemingway’

STAN ROBINSON

COLUMNISTS

Jude Law plays a notorious safecracker who, after spending 12 years in prison for keeping his mouth shut, is back on the streets of London looking to collect what he is owed. (R - 93 minutes)

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With over 20 years of film and television production experience, Stan uses his behind-thescenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. ABOUT THE FILM

,

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. E-mail him at Randyjay7694@yahoo.com.

Mark Webber plays a down-on-hisluck salesman who embarks on a dangerous game of risks prompted by a cryptic phone call. The game promises increasing rewards for completing 13 tasks - each more sinister than the last. (R - 92 minutes) Joseph: “13 Sins” is a riveting thriller that reflects that fact that anyone and everyone is capable of becoming a monster for money, barreling forward at a ferocious pace through challenges that are sure to shock and probably compel you to consider whether or not you would be willing to complete them for quick cash.

Herb Stratford’s perspective on film is story first. Herb watches thousands of films a year as he programs the Napa Valley film fest in Napa, CA. Catch Herb on KVOI 1030 AM’s ‘Wake Up Tucson’ radio show every Friday morning at 7:30am, KVOA-TV (NBC), and KMSB-TV (Fox) every Thursday. Email him at Herb@ artsandcultureguy.com

‘Finding Vivian Maier’ Filmmakers John Maloof and Charlie Siskel explore the life of a nanny whose previously unknown cache of 100,000 photographs

YELLOW! April 16th, 2014 - April 22nd, 2014

Joseph: Although it is oddly invasive, “Finding Vivian Maier” reveals that art can be created by the unlikeliest of individuals and that it is all about how we perceive our world. Having said that, this documentary may only be significant because of the beauty of the art that is at the center of its investigation.

‘Short Peace’

HELLO 14

Randy: Sometimes the best stories are about the people you have never heard of before. We see plenty of biopics about famous people whose movies just do not do them justice (Cesar Chavez, Steve Jobs, etc.…). In this case, a nanny/photographer proves to be an interesting subject for a fascinating and well-made documentary.

Joseph: “Dom Hemingway’s” dialogue is violent, profane and perverse but by God is it not also poetic, proving that writer/director Richard Shepard has a way with words and that when star Jude Law delivers said words, the result is a tour de force performance that will sear itself into your memory.

HERB STRATFORD

Joseph J. Airdo’s remarks represent the analytical perspective. A producer of, and film columnist for, “Breakthrough Entertainment,” a talk radio show airing 9 a.m. to Noon Saturdays on KPHX 1480 AM that shines a spotlight on the practical perspectives of the topics and themes explored in movies. E-mail him at joseph. airdo@gmail.com.

‘13 Sins’

Randy: Director Richard Shepard gives audiences a perfect mix of raunchy comedy and human emotion. Jude Law may seem like an odd choice for the titular role, but played the part perfectly. His character, although obnoxious, was smartly written and expertly delivered to the point where you actually felt sorry for him. The pacing was spot on and the musical score fit nicely. This could (oddly) be one of Law’s finest performances.

earned her a posthumous reputation as one the most accomplished street photographers. (NR - 83 minutes)

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Randy: The four anime shorts share no common (noticeable) theme. A bright spot is a sequence with a dancing “umbrella” in the first. Things take a darker turn with ‘Combustible’ and continue with the third. A military theme is presented in the fourth. Each is short enough to where once cannot grow tired of what is seen. A treat for anime fans and an interesting diversion for art house aficionados.

Scarlett Johansson plays a mysterious life form living in Scotland who preys on the souls of lonely men via sexual encounters. As her experiences grow, this mysterious creature becomes comfortable in her new form. (R – 108 minutes)

Make Your Move A romantic musical where two aspiring dancers find love amid a battle for power between their brothers’ New York City nightclubs. Derek Hough (‘Dancing with the Stars’) makes his big screen starring role debut. (PG-13 - 110 minutes) Randy: Truly enjoyable is the energy displayed in the dance and drum sequences presented on screen. The choreography was amazing, I only wish there were a bit more of it. The music fit well and the closing number gives others in the genre a run for their money. That being said, the pacing was a bit off, with too much down time in between. The overall production seemed a bit low budget, but one can forgive that based on the feeling that the cast and crew poured their heart and soul into this production. Could easily become the ‘Breakin’2: Electric Boogaloo’ of the current generation.

Randy: What to say about this one? I enjoy avant-garde and artsy-fartsy types of films, but this sci-fi/thriller/ drama was a bit too out there, even for me. Critics have been praising her performance, but she only smiles or shows emotion a handful of times. Her character is so emotionless it is hard to give her any accolades. If there is a message to this film, I just could not decipher what it was.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Richard Shepard (‘Dom Hemingway’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I think we are so used to movies in which you hear it’s a crime movie and you kind of know that the last 20 minutes are going to be some big break-in at a bank or something. That is not the case in this movie. This is a character-driven movie and I think that it defies expectation. You might think that it is one movie when it starts but then at the end of the movie you hopefully really care for this guy. “He is sort of a mess of a human being and, like all of us, he needs some love. There is a beating heart underneath all of the profanity and all of the craziness that happens with Dom. I hope that people are sort of surprised by the movie. I think that is why people go see independent films on any level - to be surprised; to see something that you did not expect.

“And Jude doing this role is unexpected. The humor and the heart of the film come’s from the grounding of this character that Jude brings. The movie would not work if you did not ultimately care for this guy, who is a tough guy to like. But, hopefully, you do care for him and that comes from Jude fully going into the movie. He was up to the challenge. I asked him to gain weight and not hide his receding hairline. We made all of his suits really tight so he is almost exploding out of his clothes. And I think that was an enjoyable experience for him.” - Richard Shepard

Under the Skin

Actor Amaury Nolasco (‘Small Time’) By Joseph J. Airdo

‘Small Time’ Devon Bostick plays a young man who decides to skip college in favor of joining his father (Christopher Meloni) on the lot of his used-car business. (R - 100 minutes) Joseph: Unfortunately, despite having tremendous talent both in front of the camera and behind it, “Small Time” is far from a success. “24” co-creator Joel Surnow’s directorial debut stumbles along from beginning to end with very little focus therefore making it almost impossible for viewers to remain invested.

“‘Small Time’ is a movie that the creator of ‘24’ - Joel Surnow wrote 30 years ago. He wrote it with one of his best friends who passed away a few weeks after they finished the script 30 years ago. So he really needed to do this movie. I fell in love with this movie when I read the script. It is a movie that was done for no money. It was made for the love of the game. Everybody was getting paid nothing. “It is about this dad and this kid. This

kid basically comes from divorced parents and he wants to do what his dad does, which is sell cars. His dad really wants something better for him but sometimes with teenagers you just have to let them be and have them experience their own things. It is one of those coming-of-age movies that everybody can relate to one way or another. There is that age when we were teenagers where we were rebellious and we thought we knew everything. “My character is the mechanic of the car dealership. I am a sucker for roles like this. I am a sucker for movies that make you laugh and make you cry and take you on a journey. So I couldn’t say no. And, again, this is Joel Surnow’s first time directing. I respect his work as a writer and now as a director.” - Amaury Nolasco

Dirt Car Racing and Sprint Cars in Arizona 2014

Spring is finally here, and that means great weather, and lots to do. Watching Spring Car Racing is by far one of the most exciting things for you and your family to do! Side by side sprint cars are one of the hottest forms of racing.

have been involved in motorsports most of their lives. So, I feel like I was pretty much born into it. They actually met while working on an INDYCAR team in the early 90’s, so racing is all I have ever known.”

Canyon Speedway, Arizona Speedway, Central Arizona Speedway, Prescott Valley Raceway, and Tucson International Raceway all run Dirt Sprint Car Racing. Some tracks race Winged Sprint Cars, some tracks race nonWinged Sprint Cars, and some tracks race both. Sprint Car drivers from all across the country are coming to these tracks, trying to make leave their mark, and make a name for themselves.

Sprint Car Racing is traditionally a family sport. “My dad raced sprint cars, and he has pretty much been my biggest inspiration in racing because he is the one that has been teaching me and helping me progress through the ranks. I definitely would not be where I am today without my dad.”

Casey Buckman, 2013 ASCS Southwest Region “Rookie of the Year” is one of those drivers.

Any and all kinds of racing require hours and hours of hard work, for mere minutes on the race track. Hard work and long hours are just part of the deal

for any race team, but once a driver is on the track, inside the car –it’s all worth it.

2014 is already looking like a very competitive year with more cars, and more event dates for Arizona fans.

“The hardest part is managing the highs and the lows,” Buckman said. “I am extremely hard on myself, and put a tremendous amount of pressure to put up results, for my sponsors and my team. I try to remind myself that no matter where we end up at the end of the night, I am very fortunate to be able to do what I do. We really struggled last year at times with subpar equipment, and I could get pretty emotional throughout the race, but luckily I had a great crew Ryne King, Vance Larue) to get me smiling again and build up my confidence”.

Casey Buckman agrees. “There is a ton to look forward to this season! First of all, the ASCS Southwest Region has grown immensely with 20 plus wing cars each night, with 8 or 9 drivers that could pull off a win. What are we most excited about? The fact that we now have our own race team, C Buck Motorsports, and with great support from our sponsors we have a very competitive piece ready for ASCS this year. In addition to our wing car, I will also be competing in a non wing challenge cup car for Campbell’s Racing beginning in May.” Sprint Car Racing is fun and affordable for everyone in the family. Watch from the grandstands or visit your favorite driver in the pits! See you at the track!

Local Chandler kid, Casey Buckman has been racing cars since he was 13. Born and raised in Arizona Casey Buckman decided early on, he wanted to race cars! Starting out in Quarter midgets at age 13, taking it seriously from the beginning, he grabbed over 60 feature wins in 5 different states, 7 championships, and was the 2011 QMA Western Grand Nationals Champion, all before he was even 16.

Say what you want about Danica Patrick’s lack of success in stock-car racing, but what can’t be denied about her is this: She’s tough-minded, resilient and – as she proved recently – classy enough to take the high road. With the odds in terms of perception already stacked against her in a sport dominated by men, Patrick has brushed aside suggestions that she doesn’t belong side by side with the big boys and that her looks, perky personality and the attendant big-money marketing possibilities are the big reasons why she is. For Patrick, now 32 and in her second full season in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series following a successful IndyCar career, what matters is she knows she’s talented enough to make history in a stock car, just like in 2008 when she became the first woman to win an IndyCar race. And her selfconfidence is buoyed by the belief others have in her, notably NASCAR heavyweight Tony Stewart, who co-owns the team for which Patrick races. Stewart was among those who staunchly defended Patrick’s ability after Richard Petty recently said the only way Patrick would win a NASCAR race was “if everybody else stayed home.” Patrick, to her credit, quietly dismissed the criticism, not wanting to get into a war of words with the 76-year-old NASCAR legend.

We got two Mini Coopers to drive this week. First was the Mini convertible with the John Cooper Works racing pack. It bumps horsepower from 121 to 208, has beefed suspension, monsterbrake rotors, and sport exhaust. A 6-speed manual is standard. I had the automatic box. With sport mode or paddle shifters, it performs very

well. 0-60 MPH is about six seconds. Gas mileage is 26/34 MPG. This car is a blast to drive, and a true hard-core sports machine.

Drawbacks? Well, the ride is stiffer than an ox cart. Hitting potholes can knock the fillings out of you teeth. When I saw the loaded $39,845 sticker, my jaw hit the floor and knocked the fillings out anyway. But

still, a fantastic sports car!

Next up was the Mini Paceman S model. This is NOT a car, but an SUV. With high-ground clearance, it can go off-road, and with optional 4-wheel drive, even more so. Yet on the street, it still performs like a sporty car. The factory turbo engine has 181 horsepower and gets 25/32 MPG.

One gripe I had was with the glass sunroof. The only thing protecting you from the sun is a cheap screen that lets too many rays in, turning my head into a baked potato. Don’t order this if you live in Arizona . . . you will be sorry! But you won’t be sorry owning either of these great fun-to-drive vehicles.

“Salem” premieres Sunday on WGN America.

PRESENTED BY The makers of “Salem” are hoping the phrase “If you build it, they will come” holds true. In several ways. Executive producer and co-creator Brannon Braga points out that an entire 17th-century town was constructed for the new drama premiering Sunday, April 20, on WGN America ... which also marks a rebuilding process with the debut of the decidedly edgy show, the first of several original series commissioned by the nationally distributed cable channel. Salem’s infamous witch trials come to life anew in the program, co-created by executive producer Adam Simon and centered around Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery, seen recently on “Downton Abbey”), the first among the Massachusetts town’s sorceresses. Her agenda for the locale is upset by the return of her ex-love John Alden (Shane West, “Nikita”), a war veteran determined to set Salem free from witchery. “We had to find land that had woods and what appeared to be a sea,” Braga explains, “because Salem was trapped between those.” Shreveport, La., was chosen as the production location – and a mythology is being built as well, since the cast and crew recognize the need for a contemporary lure to a show set hundreds of years in the past.

32

“I was hooked from the moment I first heard this idea,” says “Star Trek”-franchise alum Braga of Simon’s concept, “which

BY JAY BOBBIN

is that the witches are real, and they’re the ones running the trials. It’s a unique blend of horror, romance, psychosexual soap opera and other almost-inexplicable elements I’d never imagined before. And I had to be a part of it.” So did Montgomery, who’s clearly pivotal in a cast that also includes series veterans Xander Berkeley (who worked with co-star West in “Nikita” as well), Ashley Madekwe (“Revenge”), Seth Gabel (“Arrow”) and Tamzin Merchant (“The Tudors”). “I’ve noticed that it’s started to seep into my personal life, which is never good,” British actress Montgomery muses of the show’s premise. “I can get quite evil, pretty intense. This is such a complex role, it was quite intimidating to me when I started it. Mary commands so much power, and the way I usually get what I want is to be quite nice and smiley. Everyone has different tactics, especially women.” In the “Salem” ensemble of characters, Mary quite obviously is the first among equals. Montgomery knows a lot of responsibility goes with such prominence, particularly with Mary being who – and what – she is. “She spends a lot of the episodes paranoid and conflicted,” the performer reports. “There’s not a switch that you can just turn on in the scene and say, ‘OK, now I’m doing it.’ You have to build up to get to that point.”

Q: What about racing gets your juices flowing? A: The competing aspect of it. I race far better than I qualify. I race far better than I practice. I’m good at passing cars; I’m good at finding a setup that I can go race 500 miles with. When you look at the thing (our team) does and accomplishes, we race very, very well, and we’re able to get the job done at the end of the race, where maybe some people are in the fastest car and make a mistake early that they can’t recover from and just don’t have that racing savvy. Our team has always been good at racing, and that’s the part that I enjoy the most. Q: At what point last year did you find yourself saying this was a championship year? A: I thought midway through the year. We were on a tear. We led so many laps and unfortunately squandered a few opportunities to win but did win. And I wished the Chase was going to start, like, midsummer because we had such a fast race car. And as the summer wore on, it gets guys caught up, and we knew going into the Chase we were going to have our hands full. So I kind of came in and out of my optimistic standpoint and went into the Chase feeling good. But then (Matt Kenseth) wins the first two races, and I was like, “Wow! So that’s what they’re going to do to us.” (laughs) So we’ve got to beat a won-won to open the season. ... But I honestly felt good after we left Phoenix (the season’s penultimate race). I felt good the whole Phoenix weekend; we had a fast race car, and on the speed charts, (Kenseth’s team) looked like they were struggling. ... So from Phoenix on, it seemed to be a real turning point in the reality of a sixth championship.

Patrick confident NASCAR success is around corner

Danica Patrick

Say what you want about Danica Patrick’s lack of success in stockcar racing, but what can’t be denied about her is this: She’s tough-minded, resilient and — as she proved recently — classy enough to take the high road. With the odds in terms of perception already stacked against her in a sport dominated by men, Patrick has brushed aside suggestions that she doesn’t belong side by side with the big boys and that her looks, perky personality and the attendant bigmoney marketing possibilities are the big reasons why she is. For Patrick, now 32 and in her second full season in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series following a successful IndyCar career, what matters is she knows she’s talented enough Full name: Danica Sue Patrick Birthplace: Beloit, Wis. Birth date: March 25, 1982 Height/weight: 5 feet 2 inches/ 100 pounds Road to stardom: Raced go-karts as a kid ... moved to England at 16 to compete in British national series events ... joined Rahal Letterman Racing in 2002, and three years later was driving for that team in the IndyCar Series ... began full-time stockcar career in 2012 Career highlights: First woman to win an IndyCar race, the 2008

And her self-confidence is buoyed by the belief others have in her, notably NASCAR heavyweight Tony Stewart, who co-owns the team for which Patrick races. On Saturday, April 26, Patrick lines up her No. 10 Chevy in the Toyota Owners 400, airing on Fox. Indy Japan 300 ... third-place finish in 2009 Indianapolis 500 the highest ever for a female in that race ... first female to lead a lap at Indy 500 ... Toy Story 3 8 p.m. on DISN There’s still plenty of life left in Buzz Lightyear and cowboy Woody, as Tim Allen and Tom Hanks reprise their voice roles in this delightful and quite affecting 2010 sequel to the earlier Disney-Pixar box-office smashes. With their owner, Andy, heading off to college, most of his toys — except Woody, who goes with him — get a new destination, a day care center where they aren’t treated too well.

The Last Song 9 p.m. on FAM She may not be on “Hannah Montana” turf here, but that doesn’t mean Miley Cyrus doesn’t still get musical in this Nicholas Sparks-written drama that tries to bridge a gap for her younger fans and slightly older viewers. Her tune changes when she falls for an athlete portrayed by Liam Hemsworth, who became Cyrus’ off-screen beau as well.

Monsters, Inc. 8 p.m. on DISN

This computer-animated 2001 comedy from Pixar is stunning for its technical sophistication, but it’s also a surprisingly touching fantasy yarn that stands the “monster in the closet” concept on its head. SATURDAY The Little Mermaid 6:15 p.m. on FAM Critics cheered this 1989 adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story as the start of a new golden age of Disney animation. #1 Romans discovered that mixing lead with wine not only helped preserve wine, but also gave it a sweet taste and succulent texture. Chronic lead poisoning has often been cited as one of the causes of the decline of Rome.

#5 Richer, heavier foods usually go well with richer, heavier wines; lighter foods demand light wines. Additionally, red wine typically is served with red meat, white wine with white meat and fish, and sweet wine with desserts.

#3 Most wine is served in a glass that has a gently curved rim at the top to help contain the aromas in the glass. The thinner the glass and finer the rim, the better the aroma.

#2 Wine testers swirl their glass to encourage the wine to release all of its powerful aromas. Most don’t fill the glass more than a third full in order to allow aromas to collect and to not spill it during a swirl.

A couple of weeks after winning two of three to open the season against the Orioles, the Red Sox meet their division rivals once again, this time in Boston. Adam Jones and the Orioles took the 2013 season series over David Ortiz and the Sox, 11-8, and had their second straight winning season but still failed to make the playoffs. Boston, of course, won the World Series, and many observers think this season’s team is even better.

She had yet one more big surprise for the public, by which time she made her decision to step out of public view. The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

CRAFT BREWERS CONFERENCE WORLD BEER CUP was repeated by several speakers including Mitch Steele of Stone Brewing who reminded home brewers thinking of starting a brewery not to assume they can handle the transition to professional equipment…”Hire someone who knows what they are doing.”

Peace and Love, Peace and Love. Not usually what you expect from a beer article, but that was exactly the atmosphere at the recent Craft Brewers Conference where roughly 9,000 best friends met to discuss the ins and outs of running breweries, handling distribution, shopping on the Brewexpo America floor, drinking plenty of great beer, and of course, attending the World Beer Cup awards ceremony.

The conference was preceded by the Craft Wholesalers Conference where roughly 300 wholesaler representatives that sell craft beer met on a variety of topics. Some of the most interesting included a brewers panel featuring Bell’s, Cigar City and Left Hand talking about what they look for in a distributor; as well as the Keynote Speech given by Todd Stevenson, the COO from Lagunitas. Other great topics included managing the proliferation of new products, sales team training, and working with local breweries. The latter has become a hot topic as new breweries are opening up regularly and many of them are looking for distribution. Understanding how to determine when a local is ready and launching them has become a critical thing to distributors. After the wholesalers conference, Tuesday night saw all 9,000 people show up at Mile High Stadium, or whatever corporate behemoth it is named after, for the Welcome Reception. The reception used the space under the south grandstand, the club level, and the area around the field itself. Set up were incredible food stations, along with tables featuring almost every Colorado brewery

pouring some special treats. Especially memorable was the Cherry Kriek from Strange Brewing…that was validated later in the week by the gold medal the beer won at the World Beer Cup… but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. After the festival, the crowd dispersed to various craft events, including an amazing firkin event at Epic Brewing. The event featured the best 25 of the firkins from their ambitious 50 firkin event held during GABF. This was quite the meeting place for the craft folks as appearances were made by a number of national beer celebrities.

Craft Brewing retail dollar value in 2013 was $14.3 billion

All in all, not too shabby for an industry that people accuse of being just a fad, or a bubble waiting to burst. Paul Gatza, Executive Director of the Brewers Association, emphasized the importance of understanding quality and serving quality. Some of his final words were aimed at the newer brewers and breweries in planning. “Don’t F… it up!!” This sentiment

Best Neighborhood Bar in Tempe 2010!

Wednesday’s first order of business was the General Session and Keynote Speech. The general session is a sort of a state of the state regarding craft beer. The numbers were phenomenal. Highlights were: •

18% growth rate by volume (20% by dollars), up from 15% and 17% in 2013

Craft share nationally 7.8% by volume and an amazing 14.3% by dollars

2,822 total breweries operating for at least part of 2013, the highest total since the 70’s…the 1870’s

110,273 jobs provided by craft brewers, the large majority of which are full time

When Friday rolled around, everybody was ready for the World Beer Cup reception and awards. Typically presented as a reception followed by a beer dinner during which they presented the plaques, this year’s Continued On Page 53...

The conference, which is industry only, took place April 9th through April 11th at the Denver Convention Center. In reality, pretty much the whole city of Denver experienced the conference in some form or another. You couldn’t go anywhere in town without finding brewer folks enjoying the amazing beer culture of the Mile High City.

The conference itself was packed with exciting topics for all walks of the craft brewing industry. From technical brewing to brewpub management to marketing topics, there was truly something for everybody involved in craft beer. Of course, the nights remained active between hospitality rooms and events. Places like Cheeky Monk, Star Bar, Freshcraft, Euclid Hall, Ale House at Amato, Colorado Craft, and the godfather of Colorado craft beer bars, Falling Rock were all packed throughout the week. We even noticed a couple of folks slipping away to enjoy some afternoon time out on the town.

event featured a stand up reception featuring very heavy appetizers including oysters on the half shell, lobster rolls, beef, cheeses and several Colorado specialties including an outstanding bison sausage. One of the special things about the event is the way the beer is served. There is no set pattern, they just put out the remaining bottles from the judging and everybody gets to sample a variety of beers that are difficult to come by. Interestingly enough, we enjoyed a Belgian-Style Dubbel from a Brazilian craft brewery called Wäls which ended up winning a gold medal later that evening. Imagine…a Dubbel from Brazil winning a gold medal. Craft brewing has truly become worldwide.

...Continued from page 50

The awards were a night of celebration. Some facts and figures on this portion of the event: •

4,754 entries from 1,403 breweries representing 58 countries

219 judges, 166 of whom were from outside the United States

281 awards in 94 separate categories to breweries from 22 countries

Diversity was the key…only one brewery won three awards, and only 26 won two awards

Average number of entries per category was 50 with American Style IPA the largest at 223 entries

United States had the most medals with 205…Germany, Canada, Belgium, United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Czech Republic, Japan and Netherlands, in that order followed

California had the most medals, 35, followed by Colorado with 21 and Oregon with 16. After that Washington, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Ohio followed. Arizona had three awards total.

From the moment Charlie Papazian, President of the Brewers Association took the stage, the atmosphere at the awards was incredibly congenial. Brewers who are rivals in their home markets sitting with each other and cheering each other’s victories; states cheering for everybody in their state; dogs and cats living together…well you get the point.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Friday night after the event saw most people out on the town having a final beer with new and old friends, followed by final goodbyes the next morning either in the hotel lobby or at the airport. It was truly a great week to be a craft beer fan.

Hometown Heroes Authority Zero Set to Kick Off Grand Opening Celebration May 31st 2014 For years, Club Red has been the host venue for many big shows, as well as a reliable resource for outside promoters to host their events. Being the only venue in the market able to host up to 700 people, while maintaining the capability to half house productions into two stages, has allowed Club Red to stay versatile, run two shows in one night and merge the rooms to throw larger events. The location of the new venue at 1306 W. University in Mesa is a great property, perfectly ideal to suit every need. Located in the Westwood Plaza, Club Red can now offer customers over 600+ free parking spaces as opposed to the roughly 250 spaces being retired. Located near the 202 highway and the rapidly developing Mesa Riverview area, Club Red’s new home is just as easy to get to and in a flourishing part of the Phoenix market. As for bands, the new green rooms are sure to please, as well as spacious private parking that can easily fit a dozen full size coaches with trailers. Throw in the club’s now much larger stages - and you have just the right ingredients needed to put together a solid show. The new facility, once a movie theater from the late 70’s early 80’s, was retired once the new megaplexes came about. So now, after exhaustive research in an effort to find a new venue, Club Red has found a gem.

The new Club Red boasts two large theaters. The smaller room, currently dubbed the West Theater, can hold 500 patrons - while the larger East Theater can hold 750, both with full production. Construction is currently underway for new restrooms able to facilitate large crowds, as well as taking gradient floors out and installing a two level floor solution with a street level area as well as a pit area that go up to the stages, both of which measure 35’W x 15’D x 4”6’H. Long gradual ramps are being constructed from tour parking to the stages for easy and safe loading into each theater. The management team searched valley-wide for a new home for Club Red, and it turns out the new location is less than 2 miles due East on the very same street. This of course has been well-received by the current large and faithful customer base – and no shock to the market at all. Club Red recently announced that their Grand Opening will be with good friends Authority Zero on May 31, 2014. Being the Punk Rock Kings of ‘Mesatown’, and making a huge impact worldwide, it seems only fitting that the transition from Tempe to Mesa be rang in by the hometown heroes of Authority Zero. Needless to say, this will be a true grand opening celebration you won’t want to miss! For any questions regarding the event, booking of future events or any other information regarding the new venue location can be directed to booking @ clubredrocks.com
