By Chef Rachel Albert, BA, of www.TheHealthyCookingCoach.com If you’re looking for a stunning visual and auditory experience, don’t miss BELLA GAIA, an internally renowned performance that combines NASAsatellite imagery of planet Earth, time lapse nature photography, cultural heritage footage, and magnificent live music and dance from around the world. This breathtaking audio-visual exploration is a “Living Atlas” that will transform your view of life on earth. “BELLA GAIA shows you how humans and nature are connected, and how art and science are connected. It’s an exploration of the relationship between human civilization and our ecosystem through time and space,” says Kenji Williams, an award winning filmmaker, music producer, theatrical show director, and classically trained violinist, and the show’s The shows founder and creator.

As you watch and listen, your heart and mind will be equally engaged and stimulated. You will feel as if you are seeing the earth from many vantage points near and far. “BELLA GAIA’s powerful methodology transcends politics or belief systems and has been so effective that astronauts say that the experience is an accurate simulation of space flight. NASA funds BELLA GAIA’s education program on Earth Science & Environmental Responsibility and climate change skeptics have been converted after seeing one show,” say its creators. The show has been performed in more than 200 shows in nine countries in museums, performing arts centers, in government institutions, such as the Smithsonian, in corporations, and at film festivals and conferences. It is a living organism, like earth, evolving and changing as news and world events occur and are integrated into the show. If you’ve seen it once, you’ve not seen them all. This is a show to see many times over time. Bring your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones of all ages for an unforgettable experience. The Chandler Center for the Performing Arts held a one-night only showing on March 28th, 2014. To learn more and to find the next U.S. or international showing, visit http://www.bellagaia.com

Martial Arts Muscle Builder By Andy Bauman .When most people think about Martial Arts, they automatically think “fighting” and “breaking boards”. Although these two components are part of most programs, some people don’t realize that Martial Arts training is a great way to get in shape. You can increase your fitness level while learning selfdefense. Additionally, you don’t have to actually fight to get in great fighting shape.

if you really want to get stronger and feel better - and there’s no better time to start than now. Follow the exercises provided and increase reps and time when you are ready.

1.

There are many benefits to martial arts training: it improves balance, focus, and flexibility, calms the mind and spirit and increases strength. You can do this type of training anywhere and you don’t need a partner. There are a wide variety of exercises that work every muscle in your body. We will show you four different exercises to get you started. This type of training is flexible and allows you to adapt the exercises so that they work for you and your level of fitness and health. With that being said, there are no excuses

PUNCHING JUMP CHANGE - You start by jumping and scissoring your feet front to back. When your left foot is in front of you, throw a hard punch with your right hand and vice versa. Keep your fists closed and in front of your face to protect your head, make sure your elbows are close to your body so you can concentrate your strike with a good centerline punch. To increase difficulty, bring your knees up higher while you’re running in place and punch as fast and as hard as you can. Continue the jump change for 60 seconds. This is a great way to build muscle in your arms, shoulders and legs, while kicking up your cardio. Overall,

Continue back and forth for 60 seconds. This move prepares you to defend yourself if someone is attacking you from behind. 3. SIDE KICK – Start on your hands and knees. You will feel your glutes burning, but keep going! This move teaches you proper foot position and line for an extremely powerful kick. 4. RUNNERS STANCE FRONT KICK – Start by kicking to the front with your right leg with a little hop and end the kick by touching the ground with your right hand. Once you get in the rhythm continue kicking with your right leg for 60 seconds, then switch to your left leg for 60 seconds. Concentrate on striking with the ball of your foot. These kicks will improve your balance and cardio and is great practice for self-defense.

In ‘Thelma and Louise’ (1991) director Ridley Scott vetoed the idea of Louise kissing Thelma at the end, but Susan Sarandon did it anyway. It was the last shot on the last day, and Scott had no choice but to use it.

‘Rob the Mob’ Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda play a Queens couple that, specializing in robbing mafia social clubs, stumbles upon a score bigger than they could ever imagine and becomes a target of both the mob and the FBI in the process. (R - 94 minutes) Stan: At the onset, one starts to settle in on the pacing of the ‘wanna be’ elements of secondary tier of crimes of significance, as the theme escalates into a three-way cat & mouse caper. The charm is the cast delivering eclectic character portrayals, that are just as much the extremes as the story itself for a ‘breezy 90-minute’ ride. Randy: A real surprise and an even more fun romantic crime caper comedy. This true story is perfectly paced and features two winning performances that help boost the likability. Of note is the performance by Nina Arianda who steals the show and can easily become Hollywood’s next big star. Ray Romano is also a welcomed sight in a slightly different role than we are used to. Joseph: After a half an hour of entertainment during which its stars draw us in with amateurish stick-ups lined with laughs, “Rob the Mob” develops an increasingly more dramatic approach while adding

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

‘Alan Partridge’ Steve Coogan plays a DJ, whose radio station is taken over by a new media conglomerate, setting in motion a chain of events, which see him having to work with the police to defuse a potentially violent siege. (R - 90 minutes) Joseph: “Alan Partridge’s” dry, overthe-top sense of humor will leave you in stitches regardless of your familiarity with the character for which it is titled. A few physical gags will have you laughing out loud and its soundtrack is spectacular but, in the end, it is the rapid-fire one-liners for which this flick will be known.

Herb: On the surface, this quirky, dark and oddly funny film looks to be just the story of a minor-league criminal couple who get more than they bargain for when the rip off mob social clubs. However, the stellar cast, led by Boardwalk Empire alumni Michael Pitt, and a scene-chewing Andy Garcia, deliver a little gem of a film that is based on a true story.

several subplots and supporting characters causing its initial charm to become completely lost in the process.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Soundbite Spotlight: Phoenix Film Festival Edition By Joseph J. Airdo “There is a line that [Jason Thompson’s character] says that, to me, kind of sums up what the takeaway for the movie is and it’s really simple. ‘If you are trying to find something that nobody else cares about, the moment that you really stop looking for that thing is when it disappears.’ It is kind of the idea that if you believe the thing that will help you is out there in the world, you will find it. Just don’t give up looking for it - even if it is a record or something bigger.” - Juli Jackson (Writer/ Director, “45RPM”) “One of the things that I love about this film is that any time I have ever had screenings, I have had people come up to me afterwards ... and say, ‘Oh my God! I am Jake! I get it! I totally get it!’ So, in a way, I love that universal aspect of the frustration of the search for perfect love. Everybody

is doing it. People in their 20’s and even people in their 70’s are all looking for that perfect love - unless, of course, they have found it.” Howard Goldberg (Writer/Director, “Jake Squared”)

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

“Being authentic at whatever it is that is authentic for you and letting your children be authentic is a huge step toward everything. There is also a big message in the movie about family and the joy that we all have in our lives. If you don’t live your life wishing that you are doing something else then you can live a life very simply and that’s glorious.” - Maggie Baird (Writer/Actress, “Life Inside Out”) “[David Krumholtz’s character] invites his friends out to the desert because, in his mind, he has decided that the thing that is going to heal him is for all of his best friends’ girlfriends to have sex with him at the same time. I had a thought that was not dissimilar to the

thought that he has. I had this thought that everything would be better if everyone would just take care of me in this very basic way. I was so blown

away that I had this thought. And that was the springboard for this movie.” - Thomas Beatty (Writer/Director, “Teddy Bears”)

Photo & Story by Chad Haire Many of the Dodge Chargers I see on the dealer’s lot are well equipped for a sticker of about $30K. So when I got this one with a tab of $51,670, it got my attention! But this is an SRT, which should get anyone’s attention. Under the hood is a potent 6.4 liter V-8, cranking a healthy 470 horsepower. We also get monster-sized brake rotors, beefed suspension, and loud exhaust. The cabin gets some extra goodies too. I liked the special SRT seats. A dash computer has a sport or track mode setting that changes suspension firmness, and quickens transmission shift points. The program also records G-force cornering abilities and 0-60 drag strip times. Mine did it in 4.8 seconds. I didn’t try the listed top speed of 160 mph.

Complaints? Well, with fuel economy of 17 mpg overall, pit stops are often. And some feel that paying this much for a Dodge is a bit much, forgetting the Dodge Viper’s $100K tag. But you can get the same SRT goodies in the Chrysler 300 sedan if you want to upgrade. For more money of course!

ODDS ARE: BASEBALL IS BACK! The “Boys of Summer” have returned and being the gambler that you are – I suppose you were wondering, “Just what are the chances MY team will win the 2014 World Series?” As in past years, there were “Free Agent” signings, trades, spring training injuries, players that gave up the dream and retired and surprises like rookie players making the starting line-up and even the starting rotation. Here’s an opening week look at the odds – called the “Baseball Futures” for the 2014 season according to Vegas odds-makers. Remember, these odds change daily based on trades, injuries to key players and the way a team is playing currently. ODDS TO WIN THE 2014 WORLD SERIES: Los Angeles Dodgers 8-1 Detroit Tigers 9-1 St. Louis Cardinals 9-1 Washington Nationals 9-1 Los Angeles Angels 9-1

Boston Red Sox Atlanta Braves New York Yankees San Francisco Giants Tampa Bay Rays Oakland Athletics Texas Rangers Seattle Mariners Baltimore Orioles Cincinnati Reds Pittsburgh Pirates Cleveland Indians Milwaukee Brewers Kansas City Royals Toronto Blue Jays Colorado Rockies Philadelphia Phillies Arizona Diamondbacks Chicago White Sox Miami Marlins New York Mets San Diego Padres Chicago Cubs Minnesota Twins Houston Astros

this in mind. In recent history, some huge long shots went on to win the World Series in the past few years. So get out there and cheer your team on! Finally, again this year – there is no line available on Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire or Pete Rose being inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

Now, before you get too depressed looking at your team’s odds (if they happen to be near the bottom)…keep

Checking in with elisabeth

Moss

The long goodbye for “Mad Men” is about to begin, as Elisabeth Moss knows well. The much-honored AMC drama about 1960s ad executives starts its seventh and final season – which will be split into two chunks – Sunday, April 13, with the last episodes slated to be shown next year. Moss has had one of the biggest character arcs in creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner’s series as secretary-turnedadvertising prodigy Peggy Olson, and she’s feeling the pinch of the show coming to a close. “Matt and I were texting about how it’s definitely starting to feel weird,” Moss says. “I’m starting to feel that boulder in my chest, and we both agreed that it’s a lot harder than we thought it was going to be. At the beginning of this (season), we thought, ‘Oh, we’ve got 14 episodes. We’ve got so much time.‘ Then suddenly, you’re down to seven episodes left and it’s like, ‘That’s not a lot.’ ”

Crystal relives ‘700 Sundays’ “Billy Crystal 700 Sundays” airs Saturday on HBO.

Billy Crystal relives ‘700 Sundays’ for HBO in his stage hit In several ways, 700 Sundays weren’t enough for Billy Crystal.

to the point where I was thinking to myself, “OK. How much longer do I do this?”

They weren’t enough time to spend with his late concert promoter father, Jack; the original run of the Tony Awardwinning stage show about their relationship – titled “700 Sundays” – wasn’t enough, so Crystal brought it back to Broadway for a recent nine-week revival; and having it be only a theatrical event wasn’t enough, so Crystal has turned it into an HBO special. “Billy Crystal 700 Sundays” premieres Saturday, April 19, on the cable channel.

I still love it every time I perform the show, but it’s 1,500 to 2,000 people a night. And those are big theaters. I thought I was ready to let go of it and let more people see it, and when HBO came to me during this last run, I said, “OK. Let’s do it.” I was ecstatic, as we were putting it together, with how intimate the television version is.

Assembled from two January performances the actor-comedian gave at New York’s Imperial Theatre, the two-hour oneman show also factors in such aspects of Crystal’s life as his passions for jazz music and the New York Yankees. A winner of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and six Emmys, he also took “700 Sundays” across America and to Australia in the mid-2000s. Planning a return to series television next year opposite Josh Gad (“Frozen”) in FX’s “The Comedians,” Crystal spoke for this article about reuniting with director Des McAnuff and “additional material” writer Alan Zweibel to create a permanent record of “700 Sundays.”

32

Q: What made now the time to bring the show to television? A: It’s been 10 years of doing it and 66 years of writing it. This last run was so fantastic – as was the first one – it got

Q: You’re all over the stage during the course of the show, and certain camera angles clearly are designed for home viewing, also capturing the set that resembles your boyhood home. How different was it for you to contour this for television? A: I think it pretty much spelled itself. We had the crew come in to watch the show, and Des and I knew where we wanted cameras to be at certain points, plus we’d do pickup shots after the audience left. The approach is more filmic than a standard comedy show, because it’s a play. Q: It is, plus it draws on your experiences as a stand-up comic, a television personality and a movie star. Does performing “700 Sundays” for TV strike you as a merging of everything you’ve done professionally? A: I think so. I don’t want to sound self-serving, but it’s sort of an expression of all the different kinds of things I can do.

kevin connolly of ‘Friends With Better Lives’’ on CBS

PRESENTED BY

By Jay Bobbin © Zap2it Q: What’s the biggest difference in coming back to series work with “Friends With Better Lives”? A: As a young actor — and I’ve been doing this since I was 6 years old — you fall into a certain category. It’s like, “OK, you’re the kid.” Then you’re somebody’s kid in school, then you’re in junior high and high school. Then you’re out of high school and into college, and you fall into that age range where you’re too young to be an adult but kind of old for other things. As an actor at that age, you fall into a weird spot, and this is my first true adult role. “E” (on “Entourage”) is an adult, but he doesn’t live like one or act like one. With this, to get to be a husband with a home and a normal job is a great transition for me, because I’ve been trying to cross over into that world. Q: How was it to launch this show by working with sitcom-directing king James Burrows on the premiere? A: Everybody has his or her own process of approaching a project, and for me, it’s pedigree. James Burrows is the Martin Scorsese of television; I mean, this guy walks into a room, and everybody stops what they’re doing. He’s that good. You have (creator and executive producer) Dana Klein, and — with no disrespect to any other network — CBS has conquered the multicamera format. And I’ve known James (Van Der Beek, another star of the series) previously to be a very, very hard worker, and he’s hungry to get back in and work his butt off.

Uehara stars as closer, opens path to title

Koji Uehara

PRESENTED BY

Although it came without a bow and wasn’t eagerly anticipated, an early Christmas gift arrived for the Boston Red Sox in December 2012 in the form of Koji Uehara. Signed to a one-year deal, the veteran Japanese righthander was viewed at the time as a no-risk, depth addition to Boston’s bullpen, a useful piece if his at-times cranky elbow didn’t land him on the disabled list. What followed in 2013 no one foresaw, beginning, ironically, with season-ending injuries to other Sox relievers — closer Joel Hanrahan and his replacement, Andrew Bailey — that opened the bullpen door time and again for Uehara to save the season and lead the Bosox to the World Series title. The under-the-radar transaction 10 months earlier turned epic in its importance as Uehara was essentially unhittable in the

regular season — a 0.41 ERA as the fulltime closer — and Mariano Rivera-like in the postseason. He was as big in October as Big Papi, David Ortiz, whose monster Fall Classic earned him Most Valuable Player honors, while Uehara took home the MVP hardware in the ALCS, shutting down the Tigers with three saves, nine strikeouts and no walks in six innings. He also saved two games in the World Series, bringing his total to seven to tie the all-time record for most saves in one postseason. Now 39, Uehara will soon see the sun set on his career, but if 2013 is any indication, his twilight years will be a gift that keeps on giving. Uehara and the Red Sox visit the New York Yankees Sunday, April 13, on ESPN.

Full name: Koji Uehara Birthplace: Osaka, Japan Birth date: April 3, 1975 Height/weight: 6 feet 2 inches/ 195 pounds Road to stardom: Played professionally in Japan from 1999 to 2008 with the Yomiuri Giants, winning Central League Rookie of the Year in 1999 and two Japan Series championships ... signed with the Baltimore Orioles in 2009 to begin his Major League

career ... transitioned from starter to reliever in 2010 but was never a full-time closer until last season Season to remember: In 2013 led majors with 1.09 ERA and struck out 101 in 74.1 innings ... went 34.1 innings without giving up an earned run ... at one point retired 37 consecutive batters ... threw a whopping 74 percent of pitches for strikes ... became first major leaguer to strike out 100 and walk less than 10

From hero to pariah and back again in ‘The Trials of Muhammad Ali’

NOW, WATCH TV ANY WAY YOU WANT.

“I find nothing interesting or amusing or tolerable about this man. He’s a disgrace to his country, his race and what he laughingly describes as his profession. ... He will inevitably go to prison, as well he should. He’s a simplistic fool and a pawn.” And with those searing words from David Susskind on a 1968 British talk show, the “Independent Lens” documentary “The Trials of Muhammad Ali” is off, exploring the tumultuous history of the outspoken boxing champ known as “The Greatest.” The 90-minute film, which airs Monday, April 14, on PBS (check local listings), is indeed accurately titled, for Ali’s life has had more than its share of trials. There was, of course, the trial in the literal sense, which resulted in his 1967 conviction on draft evasion charges stemming from his refusal to be inducted into the armed forces on religious grounds and his opposition to the Vietnam War, a decision the Supreme Court later overturned. There was his conversion to Islam, for which he was roundly persecuted. And there was the onset of the Parkinson’s disease that afflicts him today at age 72.

Says producer Rachel Pikelny, “There were bomb threats on his house. He was getting knocked right and left in the media. And ... he had a lot of people out there who still hated him, and well beyond the Supreme Court deciding what they decided. And even to this day, you’ll find Vietnam vets who disagree with Ali and his decision, still.” What comes through in all the archival footage and interviews with family, friends and contemporaries is a man who stood his ground when it came to his beliefs and endured the slings and arrows that came his way, never once moderating his opinions. “We hope the film says as much about (society) as it does about Ali,” Pikelny says. “It shows how we changed over time. It shows what we valued and undervalued back during the time this happened. And it’s really a reflection on how we’ve grown as a society. ... “We think it has a lot to say to kids in a number of ways: How do we choose our heroes? And what does it mean to have freedom of religion and freedom of speech and all of these things? There are a lot of lessions that can be applied to what’s happening today.”

FAMILY “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”

FRIDAY Summer Stock 5 p.m. on TCM Green Acres is the place to be for the cast of this 1950 musical. Farmer Jane (Judy Garland) reluctantly allows her sister’s (Gloria DeHaven) acting troupe to practice on her land — provided they help with the chores. During the course of daily interaction, Jane is drawn to the show’s enigmatic producer and her sister’s fiance, Joe (Gene Kelly). Eddie Bracken, Marjorie Main, Phil Silvers and Ray Collins co-star.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York 8:30 p.m. on FAM In this 1992 sequel to the 1990 comedy smash, little Kevin McAllister is left behind in the Big Apple by his Hawaii-bound family. He uses his dad’s credit card to get a hotel room and ends up facing the larcenous bad guys from the first film. Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern star.

apartment. The sequel, “Three Men and a Little Lady,” follows.

Hercules 6 p.m. on FAM Tate Donovan voices the title role in Disney’s animated adaptation of the Greek myth. A god by birth, the awkward adolescent Hercules must become an earthly hero to reclaim his divine powers. He’s helped by an impish satyr (voice of Danny DeVito) and hindered by Hades, ruler of the underworld (voice of James Woods). The film has some fun with Disney’s rampant commercialism, painting Herc as a media star complete with product endorsements.

Happy Two Feet 10 p.m. on FAM The penguins are back in returning director George Miller’s animated 2011 sequel, and though some of the novelty has worn off, the result still can be enjoyed by family audiences. Now a dad, Mumble

(voiced again by Elijah Wood) balances family concerns with the rescue of his species when an atmospheric threat presents itself. Robin Williams also returns to the voice cast, with Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”) among the additions.

SUNDAY Boys Town 5 p.m. on TCM Spencer Tracy gives one of his most memorable performances in this fact-based 1938 drama as Father Flanagan, founder of a home for troubled boys. The good padre has never met a youth he couldn’t help, but a new resident with a chip on his shoulder bigger than he is threatens to undo all the priest’s work. He gets through to the youngster, though, with his belief that there are no bad boys, only good boys under bad influences. Mickey Rooney also stars.

SATURDAY

Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess 10 a.m. on DISN Disney’s first ever little girl princess was introduced in this 2012 film, which spawned a series. Ariel Winter (“Modern Family”) provides the voice of Sofia, a girl transported from her ordinary home to a royal castle after her mother weds a king. While Sofia lives in a captivating world of castles, wizards and flying horses, she remains a relatable peer-to-peer princess who is experiencing many of the same social situations as young viewers at home.

The Fairly Oddparents 3:30 p.m. on NICK Usually it’s grown-ups who hate birthdays and the thought of getting older. But Timmy isn’t thrilled about his upcoming birthday because he realizes that he’s one year closer to losing his fairy godparents, so he tries to keep his folks from making a big deal out of the day.

ABOVE THE RIM After a record-breaking freshman campaign, Arizona State’s Jahii Carson returned to lead the Sun Devils to new heights By Byron Kline Over the past couple of decades, Phoenix has produced its share of elite high school basketball talent, from Mike Bibby to Richard Jefferson and even the Phoenix Suns’ own Channing Fry. Unfortunately for Arizona State, most of those local players have either fled the Valley or taken the I-10 East to Tucson in pursuit of their hoop dreams. However, Mesa native Jahii Carson chose to blaze a new trail, turning down many of college basketball’s premiere programs to remain close to home and help elevate a Sun Devil program in dire need of its own superstar.

Don’t let his stature deceive you. Even at just 5-10 and 175 pounds, Jahii Carson, who dunked for the first time at age 13, is a man amongst boys on the hardwood. Blessed with lightningquick speed and springs for legs, he’s a nightmare match-up on both ends of the court. Before arriving in Tempe, Carson starred at Mesa High School where as senior he averaged 32.2 points and 6.6 assists per game while leading the Jackrabbits to a 21-6 record and an appearance in the state semifinals where he scored a career-high 58 points against Brophy. Rated as a top50 recruit by ESPN and as the eighth best guard in the 2011 class, Carson was named the Arizona Republic Big Schools Player of the Year while also being selected to the USA Basketball Under-19 Team.

Despite receiving offers from across the country, Carson committed to Arizona State becoming the school’s highest rated in-state recruit and its first All-American since James Harden in 2007. Unfortunately, the excitement from Carson’s commitment was short-lived for Sun Devil fans as the point guard was ruled an academic non-qualifier after failing to meet the NCAA’s initial academic eligibility standards which forced him to sit out the entire 2011 season. While he was still allowed to practice and workout with his new team, Carson was suspended from game action as the Sun Devils struggled to a 10-21 record without their playmaker. Carson refused to let the situation discourage him, though, and instead used the year

off to his benefit, adjusting to the rigors of college basketball while positioning himself for a return to the hardwood the following year. Growing up idolizing former Philadelphia 76ers great Allen Iverson, Carson made his long-awaited debut in 2012 and wasted very little time making up for his year away from the court by averaging 18.5 points and 5.1 assists per game while earning Pac-12 Co-Freshman of the Year honors along with UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad. He became the first freshman at Arizona State to score 30 or more points in three games and his 18.5 ppg scoring clip ranked seventh best alltime for a freshman in the storied Pac10/12 conference. Carson also became the first Sun Devil freshman to start

and play in all 35 games at ASU, and his 177 assists were the sixth most for a freshman in conference history. While it’s not uncommon for a player to suffer through the proverbially “sophomore slump,” especially after a stellar freshman season, Carson picked up right where he left off last year, pacing a scorching-hot Sun Devil offense in 2013-14. The Sun Devils earned a pair of big non-conference wins against Marquette and UNLV on the road where Carson recorded the first 40-point game of his ASU career. The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

CRAFT IN A CAN

So what makes cans so popular? There are a variety of reasons. First and foremost is quality. Cans are the best possible vessel to preserve freshness in craft beer. The two biggest enemies of beer are oxygen and light. Cans prevent both of these enemies from touching the beer far better than bottles do. The result is a beer that maintains its freshness longer and allows the drinker to better taste what the brewer created. As if that weren’t enough, cans are also perfect for just about any occasion. We spend a lot of time involved in outdoors activities in Arizona, and nothing is better than craft beer in a can for the outdoors. Whether camping, boating, playing golf, hanging around at the pool, canned beers are just flat out better. Some places, lakes and public swimming pools come to mind, don’t even allow bottles, so cans are the only choice. In those situations, why not bring the best possible beer? Even when there is an option to bring bottles, cans are still preferred. Cans are lighter than bottles so when out camping, packing in and packing out the empties is simple. Why would you want to have to carry out heavy, empty bottles? Cans can be crushed, take up

less space, and an empty case is easy to carry. Cans are also easier on the environment. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable and a can only takes eight weeks to make the trip from recycling center back to the canning line. In addition, they are almost fifty percent lighter than bottles so they cost less to ship, both when empty and when full. This greatly reduces their carbon footprint. There has always been a perception that canned beers are something less than high quality, but that is simply untrue. Dale Katechis from Oskar Blues, the man who lent his name to the flagship Dale’s Pale Ale and started what the folks at Oskar Blues humbly call The Canned Beer Apocalypse, states it very simply,” The myth is that high-quality craft beer has to be in a brown bottle.” When in reality, bottles were only used as a matter of economy. Canning lines were too big and too expensive; and minimum can orders were prohibitive. That is the main reason why bottles were the initial choice of craft brewers. To further put that perception to rest, look no further than the New York Times.

Several years ago they conducted a blind taste test of 25 top selling pale ales, Dale’s Pale Ale won the competition and was named as the Best Pale Ale in America. It was also the only entrant in a can. Since the last time we looked at craft in a can, the canned beer world has absolutely exploded. Locally, SanTan brewing has hit the scene harder than

any new brewery ever has. They have four core brands, Devil’s Ale, Hefeweizen, Epicenter Amber and Hopshock IPA. Their package beer is available exclusively in cans, and they have become one of the fastest growing breweries around. Their recent release of their seasonal beers in cans makes them the first Arizona brewery producing a regular seasonal can lineup. Another local brewery that has embraced the power of cans is Grand Canyon. Their Black Iron IPA is available only in cans, while they offer their two top selling beers, Sunset Amber and American Pilsner in either bottle or cans. The latter was recently introduced in cans along with a wheat beer. All four roll up into the Trail Mix pack, a twelve pack featuring three each of all four canned beers. SanTan also offers a variety pack. Given the current success of sampler packs, these should be popular just about everywhere.

Nationally, canned beer is also growing. San Francisco based 21st Amendment Brewing has become Continued On Page 53...

MILL AVE.

Ever since the folks at Oskar Blues in Lyons Colorado put the first craft beer in to a can, back in 2002, interest in canned craft beer has increased rapidly. Just ten years later, over 100 United States breweries have embraced canning their beers. Some, like Big Sky and New Belgium can beers that are already popular in bottles; while others, like Oskar Blues offer their entire line only in cans. Some canned beers are so popular that it creates an incredible demand. When Durango favorite Ska Brewing launched their Modus Hoperandi in both cans and bottles they quickly decided to drop the bottled product due to high demand for the cans and insufficient production to accommodate both packages.

known as a leader in cans, as was evident at the Americ-CAN Festival held last May in Chandler. Hell or High Watermelon Wheat and Brew Free or Die IPA are their big sellers, but if you ever have a chance, try Hop Crisis or Monk’s Blood. Minnesota’s Surly brewing is known for making big beers in cans with entries such as Furious, a big American style IPA and CynicAle, a Belgian Saison style beer. They also have some of the finest looking cans out there. You can also find great looking cans from Indianapolis youngster Sun King. Open only a couple of years, these folks already make some fantastic beer and are achieving national recognition for their flavorful beers. Anderson Valley, Abita and Breckenridge are all beers available in Arizona that have, introduced cans.

Websites are even springing up around the canned beer revolution. CraftCans. com lists 388 beers made by 135 breweries located in 40 different states that are canning at least one beer. These beers represent 65 different styles. The most popular beer style in cans is IPA, but if you look hard enough you can find Pumpkin Ales, Barleywines, Cascadian Dark Ales and even a Russian Imperial Stout in cans. This year on May 17th, as part of American Craft Beer Week, the Third Annual Ameri-CAN festival will take place at the Scottsdale Civic Center. This celebration of canned craft is hosted by SanTan Brewing but will include about fifty breweries, including some never before seen in Arizona. This includes nationally acclaimed breweries 21st Amendment, Sixpoint, Revolution and Halfacre. We also hear rumors of a couple of surprises that may be in store for those attending. Get details on this festival at www. cannedcraftbeerfest.com Canned beers are fresher, maintain their quality better, are easier to take with you for outdoor activities and help the environment. There is absolutely no reason not to try some craft in a can. Fortunately, as you have no doubt seen, it is easy to do so. Places like Papago, Whole Foods, Tops, Sun Devil, World of Beer, and many more all have a great selection. If you are looking to enjoy caned craft beer with a meal, Mellow Mushroom has an incredible selection at both their Happy Valley and Tempe locations.
