Madelyn Cook: A Retrospective Now Open at the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures.

A new temporary exhibit, Madelyn Cook: A Retrospective, will be open from April 1, 2014 through June 1, 2014 at The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures. The exhibit will feature a dozen miniatures created by renowned miniature artist Madelyn Cook over the course of her career. From the early 1970s to the end of the 20th century, Madelyn Cook worked in the 1:12 scale (one inch represents one foot) and quarter-inch scale (one quarter of an inch represents one foot) creating furniture, accessories, roomboxes and fine-scale miniature dollhouses.

The inspirations behind the miniatures in this exhibit are as varied as fairytale literature, childhood Christmas memories and a Chinese garden from Shanghai’s Old Town. The one thing that they all have in common is Cook’s penchant for storytelling, exacting research and attention to detail. The extraordinary craftsmanship will be evident in the miniatures on display. However, this exhibit will also give the viewer a glimpse into the artist’s process through the display of personal notes, sketches and photographs. Throughout her career, Cook taught classes, spoke at engagements across the country and contributed to all of the major miniature magazines. Madelyn Cook and her late husband Jim hailed from California and made Tucson their home later in life. They were deeply involved with the Tucson Garden Railway Society since its inception in 1994. Mrs. Cook currently resides in Maine.

Of the twelve miniatures in this exhibit, six are on permanent display at The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures and three have never been exhibited. This exhibit is included with museum admission or free for museum members. About The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures Located in Tucson, Arizona, The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures is a nonprofit organization with the mission of sharing the artistic, historic, architectural and creative aspects of miniatures in an entertaining and interactive way. For more information about the museum, please visit www. theminitimemachine.org or call 520881-0606. Photos available upon request.

This 13”x17” rug from the salon in the 1:12 scale 18th Century Virginia Tidelands Mansion, Lagniappe, was handmade in the Igolotchkoy style with silk thread from France. Each square-inch took Cook over two hours to complete. Photo by Amy Haskell.

La Petit Lagniappe is a 19-room quarter scale mansion featuring over 210 pieces of period furniture. It’s entire footprint is only 22 inches square. Photo by Amy Haskell. The Chamber (Au Revoir) was the last piece Cook created. The challenge was to use up leftovers from previous projects while creating a cohesive design theme. This 1:12 scale roombox features Chinoiserie and Boullework faux finishes. Photo by Amy Haskell.

Joan Watson of ‘Elementary’ Much as New York women love their heels, they also face a hard truth: They will walk thousands of steps before the day is done. Racing up and down subway stairs, sprinting 17 blocks rather than wait for a crosstown bus, and standing on lines endlessly are all agonizing in 5-inch heels. New York women carry bags that hold a lot, including a change to heels for nighttime. They don’t fancy the bright colors our sisters in tropical climes do. Real New York women look exactly like Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) on CBS’ “Elementary,” Thursdays.

Some of the best hiking advice I have for you, I read in David Lazaroff’s ‘Sonoran Desert Museum, Book of Answers’. Here is the advice; instead of trying to get out and do every hike you possibly can, it’s better to try and get to know one place really well. I have to remember this as I have been crossing off hikes that are on a long waiting list to be in my ‘Take a Stroll with Niccole’ column. Arizona is a wonderful place to hike and there is no shortage of beautiful and majestic places to explore so I find myself overwhelmed by all the possibilities. I was reminded as well about the importance and usefulness

of getting to know one place well when I ventured out to Cienega Nature Preserve with people who had been hiking and surveying the environment there for over ten years. They knew every huge tree and bend in the wash, every large rock formation and where to find water and fish. They had tales of mountain lions and troupes of coati, and they knew the place so well they could recall water levels from years before when there was a constant flow. I believe you can learn much from watching a place and seeing it change over time and throughout the different seasons. Do you have a favorite place like that? I do! It’s

Tanque Verde Falls out at Redington Pass area. I have been there during every season and can tell you anything you would like to know about it. It is a place that is not too hard to get to or too far to drive, which has water year round and a lot of wildlife. Every time I bring a new visitor to the falls they are always impressed with the scenery and I love that I can bring my dogs or go if I don’t have much time. The Redington Pass area is also amazing for mountain biking, stargazing and night hiking. These are all important things to me and I am happy I have a natural place to call home. If you have a place like that and want to share it, like my Facebook page “Take a Stroll with Niccole” and tell your story. You can also email your story to me at

Takeastrollwithniccole@gmai.l.com and I will post it and consider featuring it in my column.

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

‘Ernest & Celestine’ The story of an unlikely friendship between a bear (Forest Whitaker) and a young mouse (Mackenzie Foy). (PG - 80 minutes) Randy: Worthy of its Oscar nomination, the traditional animation is a welcome reprieve from CGI. The story is sweet natured and the characters likeab

Chris Evans reprises his role as a super-powered American soldier struggles to find his place in a modern world after being frozen in ice since WWII while battling a new threat from old history - the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier. (PG-13 - 136 minutes) Joseph: “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” plays out more like an espionage thriller, with Cap taking a backseat to S.H.I.E.L.D. - or at least serving as little more than a very small cog in a much larger wheel. Having said that, Steve Rogers remains the most dynamic member of the Avengers.

A self-diagnosed nymphomaniac recounts her erotic experiences to the man who saved her after a beating. (NR - 118 minutes) Herb: Can a film be sexy, tasteful and smart at the same time? Sure, but more often than not filmmakers miss this trifecta. Director Lars von Trier’s controversial film chronicles one woman’s journey from sexual awakening through all manner of depravity and is both explicit and oddly poetic at times. Not for the squeamish, this two-part film is designed to shock, but it is the intimate moments when everyone has their clothes on, that the film actually begins to work. Nymphomaniac Part 2 opens in two weeks to complete the story.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor Jamie Bamber (‘John Doe: Vigilante’) By Joseph J. Airdo

In “John Doe: Vigilante,” Jamie Bamber plays an ordinary man who fights violence the only way that he knows how - by killing one criminal at a time. Is he a hero or a villain? Are his actions justice or vengeance? You decide. “I was shocked when I read the script. It seemed, for a bit there, to be a call to arms for individuals to sort of stand up and say that they have had enough and take the law into their own hands to some degree. I think that it taps into quite a popular and broad feeling that maybe our courts are not being as efficient as they could.

“But it is a much more problematic film than that and, as it unravels, I think that it challenges everyone to really think about victims, about aggressors in society and how we solve those problems. It is also very much about how the media covers instances like this. “It is controversial and I think that it will get everybody to think but it is

also a very good thriller as well. There are a couple of great twists in there so hopefully it will entertain as well as challenge. I think that in the end it is a mature film - one that hopefully will not be too controversial - and I think that people will enjoy it. I think that there is a satisfaction in looking at these issues.” - Jamie Bamber

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Liam NeesoN’s Top 10 movies

“Taken” (2008): Not deemed an action star previously, Neeson changed that perception by playing an ex-spy combing Europe for his kidnapped daughter.

“Love Actually” (2003): Neeson fares wonderfully, mainly with a young co-star (Thomas Sangster), within a large ensemble cast as a man struggling to cope with losing the love of his life.

“Gangs of New York” (2002):

Neeson may not have a huge amount of time in Martin Scorsese’s drama, but he does what’s needed as the father of the story’s hero (Leonardo DiCaprio).

“Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” (1999): George Lucas was very specific about casting the first prequel, so there’s no question Neeson is ideal as Jedi legend Qui-Gon Jinn.

“Les Miserables” (1998): Neeson proves ideal casting as Jean Valjean, the desperate thief who endures a life of pursuit by the relentless Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush). “Michael Collins” (1996): Necessary gusto is supplied in full force by Neeson as one of the figureheads of the Irish Republican Army.

“Schindler’s List” (1993): Neeson is superb as a war profiteer, who literally bargains for the lives of Jews marked for Nazi execution, in director Steven Spielberg’s powerful and true drama. “Darkman” (1990): The required

theatricality is executed well by Neeson in playing a disfigured scientist who cloaks himself to avenge his assault.

“The Good Mother” (1988):

Neeson emotes well as a divorcee’s (Diane Keaton) new lover, unaware he might cost her custody of her daughter.

“Suspect” (1987): Neeson’s sheer

physical presence counts for a lot here, since he barely makes a sound as a hulking murder suspect.
