Being a student-athlete at Averett University is more than going to class during the week and making big plays on game day. Averett’s coaches want their student-athletes to walk across the stage at graduation with a diploma in one hand and a ring on the other hand.

Averett women’s soccer USA South Academic All-Conference selections since 2012-13
Former Averett women’s soccer player Cathrine Onarheim (‘14) is one of several Averett players who have defined the term “studentathlete” at Averett. She became the first Averett women’s soccer player to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors in 2014. In each of her four seasons at Averett, Onarheim received USA South Academic All-Conference recognition while sporting a 4.0 grade point average. In order to earn Acadmic All-Conference recognition, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.00 GPA in each semester of the school year. Onarheim also twice earned Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State honors in the College Division. On the field, she was named to the 2013 USA South All-Conference First Team and the 2014 USA South All-Conference Second Team.

The Office of Student Success, located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, offers free academic support to Averett’s more than 300 student-athletes, as well as other members of the campus community. In accordance with Averett’s mission statement, we are here to help you achieve your “big dreams” in order for you to fulfill your “bold future.” Our counselors offer confidential, personable service in person. Our aim is to help with general learning skills and offer individualized tutoring for almost every course. We also provide assistance and accommodations for student-athletes with learning disabilities. The center offers group study nights for math, the sciences and sociology. In addition, we can help you prepare for standardized tests, such as the GRE or Praxis. Finally, we also proctor some exams and the director oversees CLEP exams.
TUTORING PROGRAMS Averett’s Office of Student Success offers individual assistance to students for any class or project. Individual tutoring sessions may be scheduled by appointments and the center also offers walk-in study group sessions at scheduled times each week.
STUDY HALL Averett’s Department of Athletics requires all freshmen to participate in study hall each week to ensure that all first-year students have an opportunity to begin their academic careers on the right foot. The study hall program also is made available to any student-athlete who may require additional academic support during their time at Averett.
LEARNING DISABILITY SERVICES The Office of Student Success works with special needs students who require classroom and testing
CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Averett University and the Department of Athletics encourage student-athletes to take part in the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success). Averett offers various workshops and activities throughout the academic school year to promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program assists student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills and encourages the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.
CAREER SERVICES Averett teaches success by providing students with career development support. Located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, the Gregory Career

accommodations to ensure needs are met. We can provide guidance as well if you think you may need testing for a disability, such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
Services Center serves students and alumni. We help student-athletes identify career interests and training needs and assist them with résumés, cover letters and portfolios. We offer career fair and recruitment opportunities and provide training in such skills as interviewing and etiquette. We offer access to our free job listings and help student-athletes search for jobs, internships and graduate school opportunities.
WRITING CENTER Averett’s Writing Center works one-on-one with student-athletes to help them make their writing more vibrant, clear and effective. We assist students in all stages of the process from generating ideas to proofreading the final draft. Our goal is to support your long-term development as a writer, giving you new skills to use in future projects.

Danville is a great place to play, have fun and get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. Maybe you want to relax by fishing in the Dan River or strolling down the scenic Riverwalk Trail. If biking is your forte, Danville has 7.5 miles of multiuse trail and 15 miles of dirt, mountain bike trails that will surely impress you. The Averett women’s soccer program boasts one conference championship and two conference players of the year, 56 all-conference selections and numerous other accolades.
WoMen’s SoCCER TRADITION & PHILOSOPHY
Averett University’s women’s soccer program is relatively young, but the Cougars have emerged as a force to be reckoned with in recent years. In 2012, Averett broke through to win its first conference championship in program history and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The program has also produced a number of individual honors such as a USA South Conference Players of the Year and several regional awards, in addition to countless all-conference selections. The Averett women’s soccer team has been built into a contender in the USA South Conference. First-year coach Sarah Chapman is ready to continue that trend as she takes over the reins of the program.

AVERETT ATHLETICS OVERVIEW
The members of the Averett women’s soccer program take great pride in the success that they have achieved in recent years, and they attribute their success to the high value that the program places on three core principles. The first of these principles is Creativity. In soccer, just as in life, solutions to problems are not always obvious. The Averett women’s soccer program helps to realize and develop the creative skills innate in each of its members, making these solutions easier to find.
Baseball Averett’s baseball team, which began play in 1996, has been an annual contender in one of the toughest DIII conferences in the country. The Cougars won the 2003 USA South championship and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. The program has produced several All-Americans and pro draft picks. Men’s Basketball The Averett men’s basketball program won the 2014-15 USA South Conference regular season for its sixth championship. It had three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths from 20072009 and four total as a program. The program has also produced multiple All-Americans.
UNIQUENESS The second core principle on which the women’s soccer program places a great deal of value is uniqueness. Players on the women’s soccer team understand that every member has unique role to play, and true greatness is achieved when these unique roles are combined. Every member has different skills, perspectives, and experiences to contribute, and the team environment is one that encourages the sharing of these attributes. While it may be possible to become a complete player, it takes a roster full of contributions to become a complete team.
OWNERSHIP The final core principle that the women’s soccer team values is that of ownership. The members of the team understand that all successes and failures that they experience are
Women’s Basketball The Averett women’s basketball program has risen to the top half of the conference in recent years. The Cougars have five 11-win seasons in the last seven years. Men’s & Women’s Cross Country The cross country programs have seen a steady improvement in recent years. The women’s team has a conference title to its credit.
the result of their own actions, and the young ladies take immense pride in that fact. Hard work in practice, the classroom, and the community has led to wins, high grades, and an admirable reputation. When the members of the women’s soccer team combine their principles of creativity, uniqueness, and ownership, success has invariably been the byproduct.
Football The Averett football team has claimed one conference championship, produced more than 100 all-conference performers and numerous professional players despite its young existence (program began play in 2000). Men’s Golf The men’s golf program at Averett boasts the 2003 Division III NCAA national championship and has made three NCAA appearances as a team. Men’s Soccer The men’s soccer program, which enjoyed several NCAA Tournament appearances early in its existence, has returned to the top of the conference in recent years. The Cougars have made five conference semifinals appearances in the last six years. Softball The softball program, winner of two conference regular season title and one tournament title, has been an up-and-coming team in the USA South. In 2015, Averett set numerous records, was nationally ranked, won the USA South regular season and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Regional. Men’s Tennis The men’s tennis program has a history of success, ranging from 11 conference titles to numerous All-Americans. Women’s Tennis The women’s tennis program has claimed six conference championships and produced several individual award-winners. Women’s Volleyball The Averett women’s volleyball team is one of the most successful programs in the region. The Cougars have won 14 conference titles, made four NCAA appearances and have totaled numerous individual conference awards.

Daly Field
Daly Field, formerly known as the Cougar Den, is located on Averett’s North Campus and is the home field for the Averett soccer and football teams. Averett installed state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lights during the summer of 2014. The facility features a two-level press box, scoreboard and seats more than 2,500 faithful Cougar fans during games.

& ATHLETICS FACILITIES The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation Center
The Grant Center arena houses the main hardwood court used by the Averett volleyball team. Bleachers that seat more than 1,500 fans surround the main court and may be retracted to expose an additional two courts that can be utilized for warmups or additional teams during tournament play. The arena also houses the volleyball locker rooms, weight room and athletic training room. The Grant Center hosts Averett’s graduation ceremonies, concerts and other sporting events such as the Harlem Globetrotters (as seen at right).

NORTH CAMPUS FACILITIES The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation and Athletic Center and North Campus Athletics Facility were opened in the fall of 1998. It is a 55,863-square-foot facility that houses offices for all of Averett’s coaching and administrative staff members. Located in the Grant Center, the main athletics complex, are classrooms used by Averett’s physical education department, six home and six visitor locker areas, an athletic training room used for treatments of all athletes, and a fitness room accessible by all Averett students, faculty and staff. The grounds surrounding the Grant Center include five fields used by all of the outdoor sports for practice and play. Football and men’s and women’s soccer use Daly Field, which features state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lights, adjacent to the football field house and press box. The stadium seats more than 2,500 faithful Cougar fans and also boasts a twostory press box, which can accommodate up to 30 media representatives and game day personnel. The 7,830-square-foot football field house is the home to offices for all of the football coaching staff, as well as a separate locker room for the football players. There is also a weight room for strength training and as many as four film-study rooms can be utilized at one time by the football team for game preparation. In addition to Daly Field, Averett’s baseball team plays and practices on its own 2.75 acre Owen-Fulton Field. The field is a pitcher’s ballpark, with 410 feet between the plate and the center-field wall, and has stands for fans, batting cages, and its own press box. The Averett softball team practices and plays on the one-acre Cougar Field, which is adjacent to

Completing the North Campus facility are two practice fields on each side of Daly Field for the soccer and football teams. The North Campus Facility is one of the pre-
miere athletic venues in Division III. Averett’s tennis facility is currently located on the school’s Main Campus. The venue features six outdoor tennis courts where both the men’s and women’s tennis teams compete and practice. The courts are also open to the Averett and Danville community.

Averett University Athletics is committed to giving back to both the campus and surrounding Danville community. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations and events. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities in the community. The Averett women’s soccer team prides itself on giving back to the local community. Members of the soccer team volunteer their time during the offseason to coach local youth soccer teams. Working together in small groups, the girls give the opportunity to play soccer to dozens of young athletes all around the county. Holding practice sessions during the week and spending Saturday mornings at Dan Daniel Park, the Averett women’s soccer players are an invaluable asset to the local community. The women’s soccer team also teamed up with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to host an event in cooperation with the Special Olympics. The one-day event saw dozens of young Olympians interacting and competing with the members of the women’s soccer team, and everybody left the event with ear-to-ear smiles. The women’s soccer team and, as a whole, Averett University, team up with the rest of the schools in the USA South Conference for an annual food drive during the fall. Averett collected canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered them to God’s Storehouse in Danville just before Thanksgiving. Averett University donates nearly 2,000 canned goods as a part of the USA South’s Cans Across the Conference each year. Across the conference, more tan 25,000 cans and other items are collected by the league’s schools annually. The event was created by the members of the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in order to help those in need around the holiday season. COUGARS IN THE COMMUNITY
ORGANIZATIONS AVERETT TEAMS UP WITH
Big Brothers Big Sisters: Numerous Averett student-athletes work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville to reach out to the city’s youth. Averett studentathletes mentor area kids and once a week they eat lunch at school with their “little.” Averett teams also invite the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization to group outings at games. Cancer Awareness: Each year, Averett teams and student-athletes promote cancer awareness. In addition to the volleyball program’s “Dig Pink” game, other Averett teams also get involved, such as football, which also wears pink wristbands and tape during select games in October. Habitat For Humanity: Averett student-athletes and coaches give back to the community throughout the school year. Many teams coordinate with the local

Habitat For Humanity efforts. Teams work on numerous Habitat houses in the Danville area. Pennies for a Purpose: In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed “Pennies for a Purpose” in 2008. This community service initiative has raised more than $21,000 for local organizations. Averett has donated its collections in the past for such things such as earthquake relief in Haiti. Youth Camps/Outreach: Averett student-athletes enjoy reaching out to kids in the Danville area. Several teams hold youth clinics throughout the school year and encourage kids to come and learn new skills and techniques. Other teams also act as positive role models through various activities such as talking to kids in area schools or working with local youth sports organizations.

SARAH CHAPMAN HEAD COACH Sarah Chapman was named as the Averett University women’s soccer head coach in June 2015. Chapman most recently served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Stony Brook University after enjoying a stellar playing career at the University of Florida. Chapman became the eighth coach of the Averett women’s soccer program since it began play in 1993. She takes over a program that has a recent history of success, including a USA South Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012, along with two USA South Player of the Year selections and one Capital One Academic All-American over the last four seasons. Chapman comes to Averett from Stony Brook, where she served as an assistant for one season. Prior to that, she was the U17 girls’ soccer assistant coach for two
years at the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Soccer Center of Excellence, one of the top soccer development academies in the country. She also gained valuable coaching experience working the University of Florida soccer camps from 2008-12, serving as assistant camp director in 2012. She also served as a student-assistant coach for the Gators and worked as the head coach of a U15 girls’ State Cup club in Florida. She has received her NSCAA National and Advanced National Diplomas in coaching. During her four-year playing career at Florida, the Gators won the Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship three times, won the SEC Tournament in 2010 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament all four seasons. Chapman was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week and was also voted SEC Freshman of the Week as a player.

Prior to her time at Florida, Chapman was a highly-touted prep star out of Silver Spring, Maryland, where she earned all-conference, all-state and Parade AllAmerican accolades at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. She was also a member of the Bethesda Extreme Soccer Club and Freestate Shooters, where she won Maryland State Tournament and State Cup titles. Chapman also competed for the Maryland State ODP team and Region I team, winning Regional Championships as well as a National Championship in 2006. In addition, she gained experience with the U.S. national team as a member of the U-16 and U-18 national team player pool, and she represented the U-16 national team in Holland for three matches during the spring of 2006. Chapman graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Florida in 2012.

Sofia Minton joined the Averett women’s soccer coaching staff as an assistant in May 2014 following a four-year playing career with the Cougars. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Minton appeared in 75 games at Averett, making 39 starts while totaling two goals and six assists. She also was a member of Averett’s 2012 USA South Conference championship team. Off the field, Minton succeeded in the classroom by earning USA South Academic All-Conference honors multiple times. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Averett in December 2013 and currently is working toward her master’s degree.

Ashlyn Hardie joined the Averett University women’s soccer coaching staff as an assistant in July 2015. Hardie comes to Averett from Wingate University, where she gained useful experience as a coach, working with Wingate International Soccer Academy for four years in addition to assisting with the Charlotte Soccer Academy Goalkeeping Clinic. Prior to joining Averett’s coaching staff, Hardie gained valuable knowledge as a goalkeeper for the Wingate women’s soccer program, where she led the squad to three South Atlantic Conference Tournament championships along with a Southeastern Regional championship in 2014 while serving as the team’s captain. Hardie had a decorated playing career, picking up several awards throughout her time at Wingate including being named the MVP of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament in 2014 and earning a First Team SAC Tournament nod the same year. She was also a two-time selection to the All-SAC Team and earned two All-Southeast Region Goalkeeper awards as well. In 2014, she was also named the Disney National Player of the Week. In addition to these honors, Hardie’s senior season saw her not allow a goal in over 1,000 minutes and earned the Outstanding Woman of the School of Sports Sciences Award in 2015. A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Hardie graduated in 2015 from Wingate and holds a bachelor’s degree in sports management. She is currently pursuing her master’s of business administration from Averett.

Thomas Underwood was named Averett’s head athletic trainer in July 2014 after serving as assistant athletic trainer since September 2011. Prior to joining Averett’s training staff, Underwood worked at Guilford Orthopaedic Clinic in Greensboro, N.C. Thomas is a graduate of Averett University with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. While at Averett as a student, Thomas worked with football, baseball and men’s soccer teams. He also had the opportunity to intern with the Green Bay Packers the summer of 2008. Thomas currently resides in Danville with his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Colton and Collins.
Stefan Varner joined the Averett athletic training staff in the summer of 2014. Varner returned to Averett after playing four seasons with the football program. Varner is Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Level 1 certified and is a member of the National Athletic Training Association. Also, as an undergraduate student at Averett , Varner was a peer tutor in the field of science and physical education, a supplemental peer instructor for lectures and lab in the sports medicine classes and was inducted into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society, a part of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

Angela McNeely joined Averett University as its assistant athletic trainer in July 2014. A native of Danville, McNeely came to Averett with a wealth of experience in athletic training at the collegiate and high school level. In the spring of 2014, she served as an athletic training student with the Shenandoah University men’s basketball and baseball teams. Prior to that, McNeely was a student athletic trainer with the University of Richmond football team and several high schools in the Winchester, Va., area. McNeely received her master’s of science degree in athletic training from Shenandoah in May 2014. She completed her bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology and psychology from Shenandoah in 2012.

USA SOUTH CONFERENCE

One of the oldest Division III conferences in the nation, the USA South Conference was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College (now Methodist University), North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003, and the first USA South Athletic Conference championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time, the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports. The Conference sponsored athletic programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The Conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball,

softball, men’s and women’s tennis, golf and women’s lacrosse for a total of 14 sports. Presently, the Conference features 13 institutions, five in North Carolina, three in Georgia, three in Virginia, one in Alabama and one in Tennessee. Averett University, Covenant College, Ferrum College, Greensboro College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Mary Baldwin College, Maryville College, Meredith College, Piedmont College and William Peace University have joined Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan and make up today’s conference full-time membership. The USA South will welcome three new members in 2016-17 as Agnes Scott College, Salem College and Wesleyan College bring the total membership to 16 institutions.

WHAT IS THE COUGAR CLUB?
Created in 1989, the Cougar Club is a non-profit organization whose primary objective is to raise money to provide a positive experience for Averett student-athletes and fans. The activities of the Cougar Club are varied, but are all designed with the student-athlete in mind. FRANK CAMPBELL STADIUM Phase 2 of the stadium construction is scheduled to begin following the completion of the 2015 soccer season. The second phase will include a pressbox, permanent seating and an entrance to the complex.
