Women’s basketball players earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors since 2012-13 under head coach Liz Hickey

Averett women’s basketball sophomore Samm Chandler is one of several Averett players who defines the term “student-athlete” at Averett. Chandler, an all-conference performer who was named the Virginia Sports Information Directors State Rookie of the Year in 2014-15, has received USA South Academic All-Conference recognition in each of her first two years at Averett. In order to earn Acadmic All-Conference recognition, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.00 GPA in each semester of the school year.

The Office of Student Success, located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, offers free academic support to Averett’s more than 300 student-athletes, as well as other members of the campus community. In accordance with Averett’s mission statement, we are here to help you achieve your “big dreams” in order for you to fulfill your “bold future.” Our counselors offer confidential, personable service in person. Our aim is to help with general learning skills and offer individualized tutoring for almost every course. We also provide assistance and accommodations for student-athletes with learning disabilities. The center offers group study nights for math, the sciences and sociology. In addition, we can help you prepare for standardized tests, such as the GRE or Praxis. Finally, we also proctor some exams and the director oversees CLEP exams.

TUTORING PROGRAMS Averett’s Office of Student Success offers individual assistance to students for any class or project. Individual tutoring sessions may be scheduled by appointments and the center also offers walk-in study group sessions at scheduled times each week.

STUDY HALL Averett’s Department of Athletics requires all freshmen to participate in study hall each week to ensure that all first-year students have an opportunity to begin their academic careers on the right foot. The study hall program also is made available to any student-athlete who may require additional academic support during their time at Averett.

LEARNING DISABILITY SERVICES The Office of Student Success works with special needs students who require classroom and testing

CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Averett University and the Department of Athletics encourage student-athletes to take part in the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success). Averett offers various workshops and activities throughout the academic school year to promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program assists student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills and encourages the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.

Services Center serves students and alumni. We help student-athletes identify career interests and training needs and assist them with résumés, cover letters and portfolios. We offer career fair and recruitment opportunities and provide training in such skills as interviewing and etiquette. We offer access to our free job listings and help student-athletes search for jobs, internships and graduate school opportunities.

WRITING CENTER Averett’s Writing Center works one-on-one with student-athletes to help them make their writing more vibrant, clear and effective. We assist students in all stages of the process from generating ideas to proofreading the final draft. Our goal is to support your long-term development as a writer, giving you new skills to use in future projects.

The Averett women’s basketball program has developed consistency and has become an up-and-coming force in the USA South Conference. The Cougars boast five 11-win seasons in the last seven years.

WOMen's BASKETBALL TRADITION & PHILOSOPHY Averett University’s women’s basketball program dates back several decades and have featured numerous star players, but the Cougars have come into their own as a successful team in recent years. Prior to 2000, Averett won double-digit games just twice. The Cougars have reached that mark in eight of the last 11 seasons. The women’s basketball program prides itself on players with character who are committed to team goals. Averett women’s basketball players will be dedicated and hard working.They will be consistently devoted to getting better as people and as student-athletes.

AVERETT ATHLETICS OVERVIEW

Averett Women’s Basketball Coach Liz Hickey and her staff emphasize developing a whole person, not just a basketball player. During a student-athlete’s four years at Averett, the coaches aim to teach their players skills that will help them be successful for the next 40 years of their life. Three areas are important to the coaching staff when recruiting. They want their players to be successful academically, athletically and socially at Averett.

SCHEDULE STRENGTH The Averett women’s basketball team participates in 25 regular season contests. In addition to the tough conference schedule as a member of the USA South Conference, the coaching staff looks to schedule strong nonconference opponents. Each year Averett’s women’s basketball program competes in competitive tournaments to prepare for conference games. This season, Averett will play two games at Marymount University’s Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament, as well as face off against some of the top non-conference teams in the area.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING PROGRAM The major goals of the Athletic Training and Strength and Conditioning departments at Averett are to reduce injuries and improve performance during competition and training. Averett provides a unique situation where we perform

Baseball Averett’s baseball team, which began play in 1997, has been an annual contender in one of the toughest DIII conferences in the country. The Cougars won the 2003 USA South championship and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. The program has produced several All-Americans and pro draft picks. Men’s Basketball The Averett men’s basketball program has six conference championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and several All-Americans to boast.

a Functional Movement screen on the athletes which determines their specific weaknesses. Based on these weaknesses a more individualized strength and performance program can be created. The Functional Movement Systems (www. functionalmovement.com) was co-created by Lee Burton, Averett’s former Program Director of Athletic Training, who currently serves as a consultant to Averett Athletics. Burton and cocreator Gray Cook are internationally known consultants in their field and their Functional Movement screening system is used by numerous NFL, NHL and MLB teams for rehabilitating injured players, as well as for strength and conditioning.

ATHLETIC TRAINING Averett’s Athletic Training staff is composed of three certified trainers who work closely with a student staff member majoring in athletic training.

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country The cross country programs have seen a steady improvement in recent years. The women’s team has a conference title to its credit. Football The Averett football team has claimed one conference championship, produced more than 100 all-conference performers and numerous professional players despite its young existence (program began play in 2000). Men’s Golf The men’s golf program at Averett boasts the 2003 Division III NCAA national championship and has made three NCAA appearances as a team. Men’s Soccer The men’s soccer program, which enjoyed several NCAA Tournament appearances early in its existence, has returned to the top of the conference in recent years. The Cougars have made seven straight conference tournament appearances. Women’s Soccer The women’s soccer team earned its first USA South Conference championship in 2012, winning a program-best 17 games and making its first NCAA Tournament appearance. Softball The softball program, winner of two conference regular season title and one tournament title, has been an up-and-coming team in the USA South. In 2015, Averett set numerous records, was nationally ranked, won the USA South regular season and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Regional. Men’s Tennis The men’s tennis program has a history of success, ranging from 11 conference titles to numerous All-Americans. Women’s Tennis The women’s tennis program has claimed six conference championships and produced several individual award-winners. Women’s Volleyball The Averett women’s volleyball team is one of the most successful programs in the region. The Cougars have won 15 conference titles, made four NCAA appearances and have totaled numerous individual conference awards, including five All-Americans.

Grant Center & ATHLETICS FACILITIES

The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation Center

The Grant Center arena houses the main hardwood court used by the Averett women’s basketball team. Bleachers that seat more than 1,500 fans surround the main court and may be retracted to expose an additional two courts that can be utilized for warm-ups or additional teams during tournament play. The arena also houses the basketball locker rooms, weight room and athletic training room. The Grant Center also hosts Averett’s graduation ceremonies, concerts and other sporting events such as the Harlem Globetrotters (as seen above).

NORTH CAMPUS FACILITIES The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation and Athletic Center and North Campus Athletics Facility were opened in the fall of 1998. It is a 55,863-square-foot facility that houses offices for all of Averett’s coaching and administrative staff members. Located in the Grant Center, the main athletics complex, are classrooms used by Averett’s physical education department, six home and six visitor locker areas, an athletic training room used for treatments of all athletes, and a fitness room accessible by all Averett students, faculty and staff. The grounds surrounding the Grant Center include five fields used by all of the outdoor sports for practice and play. Football and men’s and women’s soccer use Daly Field, which features state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lights, adjacent to the football field house and press box. The stadium seats more than 2,500 faithful Cougar fans and also boasts a twostory press box, which can accommodate up to 30 media representatives and game day personnel. The 7,830-square-foot football field house is the home to offices for all of the football coaching staff, as well as a separate locker room for the football players. There is also a weight room for strength training and as many as four film-study rooms can be utilized at one time by the football team for game preparation. In addition to Daly Field, Averett’s baseball team plays and practices on its own 2.75 acre Owen-Fulton Field. The field is a pitcher’s ballpark, with 410 feet between the plate and the center-field wall, and has stands for fans, batting cages, and its own press box. The Averett softball team practices and plays on the one-acre Cougar Field, which is adjacent to

miere athletic venues in Division III. Averett’s tennis facility is currently located on the school’s Main Campus. The venue features six outdoor tennis courts where both the men’s and women’s tennis teams compete and practice. The courts are also open to the Averett and Danville community.

Averett University Athletics is committed to giving back to both the campus and surrounding Danville community. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations and events. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities in the community. The Averett women’s basketball team has done a number of events to help serve the community. During the school year, Averett’s women’s basketball players went to God’s Storehouse in Danville to help sort and stock some of the approximately 32,000 boxes of food that are given to those in needs each year by the organization. The members of the women’s basketball team also teamed up with the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee during the fall to collect cans and non-perishables for donation to needy charities around the area. As a whole, Averett University teamed up with the rest of the schools in the USA South Conference for the annual food drive during the fall. Averett collected canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered them to God’s Storehouse in Danville just before Thanksgiving. Averett University donates nearly 2,000 canned goods as a part of the USA South’s Cans Across the Conference each year. Across the conference, more than 51,000 cans and other items are collected by the league’s schools annually. The event was created by the members of the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in order to help those in need around the holiday season. ORGANIZATIONS AVERETT TEAMS UP WITH

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Numerous Averett student-athletes work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville to reach out to the city’s youth. Averett studentathletes mentor area kids and once a week they eat lunch at school with their “little.” Averett teams also invite the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization to group outings at games. Cancer Awareness: Each year, Averett teams and student-athletes promote cancer awareness. In addition to the volleyball program’s “Dig Pink” game, other Averett teams also get involved, such as football, which also wears pink wristbands and tape during select games in October. Habitat For Humanity: Averett student-athletes and coaches give back to the community throughout the school year. Many teams coordinate with the local

Habitat For Humanity efforts. Teams work on numerous Habitat house in the Danville area. Pennies for a Purpose: In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed “Pennies for a Purpose” in 2008. This community service initiative has raised more than $19,000 for local organizations. Averett has donated its collections in the past for such things such as earthquake relief in Haiti. Youth Camps/Outreach: Averett student-athletes enjoy reaching out to kids in the Danville area. Several teams hold youth clinics throughout the school year and encourage kids to come and learn new skills and techniques. Other teams also act as positive role models through various activities such as talking to kids in area schools or working with local youth sports organizations.

HEAD COACH Liz Hickey has served as the Averett University women’s basketball head coach since April 2011. Hickey became the eighth head coach in program history, taking over the Averett women’s program after serving as an assistant coach for three seasons at the University of Rochester, where she helped guide the Yellow Jackets to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances — including a 2010 trip to the Division III Final Four. In 2014-15, with a roster featuring only one senior, Hickey coached her squad to its best conference record in her five seasons. Averett finished 9-10 in the USA South (11-15 overall) and was within one point of knocking off regular season champion Maryville College — ranked 15th in the nation — in the conference tournament. She produced one all-conference selection in 2014-15 and the 2014-15 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID)

State Rookie of the Year. In her first season at Averett in 201112, Hickey guided her team to an 11-15 record — the program’s fourth consecutive 11-win season — and produced three allconference players. In her second season, the Cougars finished 8-11 with a young lineup that produced one all-conference selection. In 2013-14, the Cougars went 7-18 with another young roster that featured only one senior and one junior. In addition to her coaching duties at

Averett, Hickey has served as the department’s senior woman administrator since June 2015. Prior to beginning her coaching career at Rochester in 2008, Hickey was a threetime Division III All-American at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. As a three-year captain, Hickey helped lead Mary Washington two three Capital Athletic Conference championships, four NCAA Tournament berths, three Sweet 16 appearances and one Final Four. Mary Washington had a combined 111-15 record during Hickey’s four seasons. A native of Virginia Beach, Hickey was a dominating post player who finished her career as the NCAA Division III career leader in blocked shots with 510 in 126 games. She was selected to the WBCA First Team All-American as a senior and an Honorable Mention All-American as a junior and sophomore. In addition, Hickey

She also earned three consecutive First Team All-Conference honors from the Capital Athletic Conference and was the CAC Player of the Year as a junior and senior. She was a First Team All-State selection as a junior and senior and a Second Team All-State honoree as a sophomore. Hickey is also the only student-athlete in any sport at Mary Washington to have her jersey number retired. Hickey also achieved success in the classroom. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Mary Washington, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was chosen as Mary Washington’s Academic Athlete of the Year. Hickey also received her master’s degree in Teaching and Curriculum from Rochester.

Morgan Crawford joined the Averett University women’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant in June 2015. Crawford gained valuable coaching experience through working as a volunteer assistant coach at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she served among a fourmember coaching staff during the 2014-15 season. In addition to her experience off the court, Crawford has experience as a player as well. She began her college career at the University of Mobile, where she played for two years before finishing her playing career at Huntingdon College. Crawford was a two-year point guard at Huntingdon, starting in 60 games. She holds records at Huntingdon for most steals in a game with 10 along with most assists in a game with nine. Her senior season saw Crawford lead both the Great South Athletic Conference and the team in assists, finishing with 151 for the season and was second in the conference in steals. She also started all 29 games as a senior, where she averaged 16.3 points per game with 5.1 rebounds per game. Crawford was also a member of Huntingdon’s 2012-13 Great South Athletic Conference championship team and helped the squad to its first NCAA tournament appearance in school history. Additionally, she was selected as player of the week four times and earned Great South Athletic All-Conference honors both years. Off the court, Crawford succeeded in the classroom by earning Great South Athletic Academic AllConference honors several times. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Crawford relocated to Mobile, Alabama, where she finished high school. She earned her bachelor’s of arts degree in sports management from Huntingdon in December 2013 and is currently working toward her master’s of business administration from Averett.

Abby Bailey joined the women’s basketball program as an assistant coach in the summer of 2015. Bailey, a native of Prince George, Virginia, played basketball at Averett all four years of her collegiate career as a forward. Prior to joining Averett’s coaching staff, Bailey worked as a ninth grade health and physical education teacher for Danville Public Schools. Bailey graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, and she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in education at Averett.

Thomas Underwood was named Averett’s head athletic trainer in July 2014 after serving as assistant athletic trainer since September 2011. Prior to joining Averett’s training staff, Underwood worked at Guilford Orthopaedic Clinic in Greensboro, N.C. Thomas is a graduate of Averett University with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. While at Averett as a student, Thomas worked with football, baseball and men’s soccer teams. He also had the opportunity to intern with the Green Bay Packers the summer of 2008. Thomas currently resides in Danville with his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Colton and Collins.

Stefan Varner joined the Averett athletic training staff in the summer of 2014. Varner returned to Averett after playing four seasons with the football program. Varner is Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Level 1 certified and is a member of the National Athletic Training Association. Also, as an undergraduate student at Averett , Varner was a peer tutor in the field of science and physical education, a supplemental peer instructor for lectures and lab in the sports medicine classes and was inducted into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society, a part of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

Angela McNeely joined Averett University as its assistant athletic trainer in July 2014. A native of Danville, McNeely came to Averett with a wealth of experience in athletic training at the collegiate and high school level. In the spring of 2014, she served as an athletic training student with the Shenandoah University men’s basketball and baseball teams. Prior to that, McNeely was a student athletic trainer with the University of Richmond football team and several high schools in the Winchester, Va., area. McNeely received her master’s of science degree in athletic training from Shenandoah in May 2014. She completed her bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology and psychology from Shenandoah in 2012.

Laura Branham joined the Averett athletic training staff in the summer of 2015. Branham came to Averett after graduating from Western Carolina University with a degree in athletic training in May 2015. During her collegiate career, she gained experience working as an athletic training student with Coastal Carolina University’s football team as well as the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams at The College of William & Mary. Prior to that, Branham also served as an athletic training student for multiple events, including the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference Wrestling Tournament, Bluegrass State Games and the Valley of the Lilies Half Marathon. Branham gained additional experience working with multiple high schools in the Asheville, North Carolina, area.

USA SOUTH CONFERENCE

One of the oldest Division III conferences in the nation, the USA South Conference was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College (now Methodist University), North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003, and the first USA South Athletic Conference championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time, the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports. The Conference sponsored athletic programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The Conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s

www.usasouth.net @usa_south cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, golf and women’s lacrosse for a total of 14 sports. Presently, the Conference features 13 institutions, five in North Carolina, three in Georgia, three in Virginia, one in Alabama and one in Tennessee. Averett University, Covenant College, Ferrum College, Greensboro College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Mary Baldwin College, Maryville College, Meredith College, Piedmont College and William Peace University have joined Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan and make up today’s conference full-time membership. The USA South will welcome three new members in 2016-17 as Agnes Scott College, Salem College and Wesleyan College bring the total membership to 16 institutions.
