During the course of this new season we will head north to Canada, south to Uruguay, and over the Pacific to Japan and China. We will then guide you across the Atlantic to France, Germany, Austria, and Spain, and finish right back home in the United States. As is our custom, the great Masterworks Series shares the stage with works new to our repertoire, including Mahler’s Seventh Symphony. There is even a short classical work by former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney! Please join your Austin Symphony Orchestra, marvelous soloists, and me for an exciting season of music making. Germany’s St. Thomas church in Leipzig is famous for its association with a number of well-known composers, among them, Felix Mendelssohn. The ASO will perform his Violin Concerto in E Minor, one of the composer’s most popular works. After meticulous revision of the solo part, the work finally premiered in Leipzig in 1845.

This is a peaceful space to reflect on Dr. King’s achievements as a civil rights leader and a tireless advocate for racial equality. Joseph Schwantner’s New Morning for the World honors his legacy.

“Eastern Winds”
Our journey continues to Asia. Works by Japanese composer Yasushi Akutagawa, and Chinese composers Chen Gang and He Zhanhao reflect not just their own respective countries’ influences but those from travels abroad. The soloist, Jiebing Chen, will perform on an erhu, a two‑stringed bowed instrument similar to the western fiddle.

Brahms X Radiohead: A Symphonic Fusion Experience is an epic symphonic synthesis of Radiohead’s album, OK Computer, and Brahms’ First Symphony, utilizing a full symphony orchestra and three solo vocalists. The concert offers a re‑imagined experience of each work through the lens of the other, and explores the explosive tension they have in common.

Brahms’ 19th-century orchestral sound palette is used throughout, but woven in, superimposed, and inserted, are the melodies and music of Radiohead. At times one hears the melodies and words of Radiohead suspended over Brahms’ original music; at times the orchestra is playing the music of Radiohead but filtered through the counterpoint and harmonies of Brahms. Every combination of synthesis is explored, as the music moves from one to the other so seamlessly that many times the audience is left wondering which is which, and how the combination is even possible.

“ASO Tuneful Tales” June–July, 2023 Austin Central Library “ASO Tuneful Tales” is an exciting summer program that features ASO ensembles performing music to well‑known children’s stories. Youngsters can visit the Instrument Zoo where they can see, touch, and play the instruments; talk to Symphony musicians; and hear them play their instruments. This is a free fun-filled summer family event.
Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park Sundays, June 4–August 27, 2023 Long Center’s Hartman Concert Park, 7:30 p.m. Presented by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park unites ardent enthusiasts and casual attendees alike, just as similar events did in town centers years ago. In its 21st summer season, these free ensemble concerts are at the Long Center’s Hartman Concert Park on Sundays at 7:30 p.m., from June through August.

Women’s Symphony League Founded in 1953, the Women’s Symphony League (WSL) of Austin provides service and financial support to the Austin Symphony Orchestra and its children’s educational programs. Symphony BATS The ASO’s young diverse professionals group, Symphony BATS (Be. At. The. Symphony.), is entering its 22nd season of dynamic performances, exclusive events, and great parties! Membership includes premier seating to four concerts in Dell Hall chosen by Maestro Peter Bay, and year-long occasions to join others for gatherings and volunteer opportunities. Arbor Series The Arbor Series, an auxiliary group that has an educational component while also providing financial support for the ASO, started in the 1970s. The Arbor Series gives its members the opportunity to meet, visit, and participate in a Q&A with Maestro Peter Bay and the guest artist(s), the Thursday prior to the upcoming Masterworks Series performance. Knights of the Symphony Established in 1966 by 70 Austin businessmen with the assistance of members of the Women’s Symphony League, the Knights of the Symphony was designed to be a fun-loving group. Despite its light‑hearted attitude, however, the organization has also contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Austin Symphony Orchestra during its more than 40-year history.
