The IP Exchange: Ideas to Impact

Page 1

What does The IP Exchange do? The IP Exchange (IPX) works with university inventors to advance intellectual property (IP) to market: patents, copyrights (e.g., software), trademarks, biological materials and know-how. IPX attracts industry partners interested in Auburn innovation and negotiates related licenses and other intellectual property agreements. Additionally, IPX assists faculty members along the path to forming startup companies that move research to market, making science-based solutions available to the citizens of our state, region and beyond.

Why pursue patents and IP?

ipx.auburn.edu

• Protecting and licensing IP often enables adoption of technology. For inventions that require significant investment and business risk, traditional publication and dissemination may not be sufficient for technology realization. • Invention reporting is typically required for federally or industrially sponsored projects. Failure to report can have negative consequences.

What about academic publications? • Patents can work in concert with publications. • For best options, contact IPX before the first public disclosure

IPX helps interactions with industry: The following agreements run through IPX:

• • • •

Non-disclosure/confidentiality agreements (NDAs) Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) IP licensing agreements Teaming Agreements, collaboration agreements and MOUs

IPX has expanding resources: LAUNCH Innovation Grants Program:
