LIGHTING IN COMMERCIAL SPACE Lighting project for an experience center in Sweeden Project Work, Politecnico di Milano Team: Moraiti A. | Ziouta N. | Sushmeet S.
The project is placed in Stockholm, Sweeden. It is an experience center of a company with a route that starts from the entrance and the video projection area, moving to the main display area, the meeting room, the shop and in the end the lounge area.
The main intention is to create different scenes in each space in order to attract the interest of the visitor and make him want to move on to the next space. So, at the entrance and the video projection area we create contrasts and we give directionality through light but also focus on the product display. At the main display area we give direct light through tracklights to the podiums and indirect light with linear lighting for the corridors. Moving to the meeting room, the atmosphere is more bright with general light for the concentration and direct light for the product display. As for the shop area, we have the integration of natural light, so we use dimmable and tunable white luminaires for the products with the presence of sensors. In the end of the path is the lounge area where we create an ambient atmosphere with general light and direct lighting fot the tables through our custom made fixtures.

LIGHTING IN CULTURAL HERITAGE Lighting design for the Abbey Of Santa Maria in Cerrate, Italy Project Work, Politecnico di Milano Team: Moraiti A. | Ziouta N. | Sushmeet S.
The project is about the lighting design of the multifunctional room of the Abbey. We examine 3 different scenarios - activities that can take place in this room and as a result 3 different lighting scenes.
The first scenario is about temporary exhibitions and video projections inside the room. Lighting is focused only on the exhibition and there is no general, ambient lighting in the room in order not to cause glare in the video projection area.
The second scenario is about weddings and parties with long tables and a stage. In this case lighting has two roles, the first is to highlight the architecture and give ambient light to the room and the second is to have direct light at the task areas such as the tables and the stage.
As for the third scenario, here the layout is for presentations and cultural meetings. Direct lighting is needed for the stage and ambient lighting for the audience but in different dimming values than the second scenario.

LIGHT | SPACE | SPIRIT Light as means of communication between human spirit and space Research Thesis, NTUA, Greece Team: Moraiti A. | Syrianou I.
The research project deals with natural light, which is capable of forming the atmosphere of every space, and the way that light affects human notion as well as his emotional and spiritual state. The main goal is to explore how natural light interacts with space and influences human psychology and spirituality. Light influences people’s emotions and thoughts, leads them to inner searches and transmits meanings to them, through the use of symbolisms and metaphors.
Project quote: “Space is oblivion without light. A building speaks through the silence of perception orchestrated by light,” Steven Holl Juhani Pallasmaa, in his theoretical work, pointed out the problem of modern architecture’s indifference to the development of a deeper communication between human and space. He emphasized the absence of fertile interaction between body, thinking and space.
15
3 16
He argued that the ability of the architectural space to interact with the human psyche and innerness is based on experience and not on its morphology. With the import of the atmosphere in the space, human’s attention is shifted from the image to the experience. The sense of experience was defined as any moment that is intensely experienced by human, is perceived through the senses and leaves its imprint on his memory. It is a deep, personal experience that is connected with the activation of all the sensory organs, but also with the existential perceptions, psychological states and the way of people thinking. Based on what people perceive and understand, a spontaneous reaction is triggered and it is transformed into physical action, thoughts and feelings. An architect, while drawing with light, shapes the perception and seeks to co-move the body. Nevertheless, it does not force people, but he pushes them and predisposes them. This reaction is triggered in a high percentage by the visual stimuli that are revealed to them, through the existence and subsistence of light. Light and darkness have a great effect on people, far beyond what is felt. They affect the conscious, but also the subconscious-emotional level. They can activate the user’s senses, they triggering each time unique emotional and spiritual states and thus make people experience the space. The architect, depending on the way he handles the light, can create spaces with a mysterious, threatening, warm, charming atmosphere. The coexistence of light and darkness is a necessary condition for the space to be perceived and then pleasantly experienced. A necessary condition for the people to be able to experience the space, is the sense of security. It is important not to confuse them, so as they are not distracted from the perception and understanding of the space and the determination of their position in it. Feeling lost prevents “habitation”. Light, depending on the way it is found in space, facilitates or complicates orientation. Darkness, in space, is identified with the feeling of chaos. People don’t know where to move and they are disoriented. At the same time, however, they are given an unexpected freedom of movements. Something similar happens with the bright diffused light that blinds. When light comes from above, it attracts and gives the feeling of apotheosis and creates, in accordance with the absolute darkness, a sense of freedom in people. In these extreme emotions, the only thing that can bring peace to the architectural space is the balance between the two. The balance between light and darkness is achieved with the appropriate manipulations of the dim light and the shadows that are created. When the conditions of light in a space change, the atmosphere of the space changes and therefore the way a person perceives it. The dim light in a space can evoke memories to the user and create a feeling of relaxation. In case a space is totally dark and it is illuminated only with a lamp or a candle, instead of the excessive lighting of the sun or electric light, this space changes and the objects inside it gain seriousness, calmness but at the same time depth and magnificence. The more light there is in a space, the farther we are from the dim light and the easier it is to lose the meanings and messages with which the space is loaded. Everything looks dazzling and the user has a feeling of anxiety.

RESIDENCE IN ATHENS Private Residence Renovation in Athens, Greece Team: A&M Architects
The project refers to a private residence renovation located on the northern suburbs of Athens. The house consists of three levels, basement, ground floor and first floor, with a large courtyard with swimming pool.
On the basement we create a playroom with a gym corner and a small music studio. As for the ground floor, there is the living zone with the dining room, the kitchen, the reading corner and the living room with instant access to the swimming pool. Going upstairs on the first floor there are two bedrooms with their own bathroom each one and the master bedroom with the master bathroom and a built-in closet.
Εarthy color tones, stone tiles and wooden structures with the addition of black metal details are the dominant elements for the interior design.

BUTCHER STORE Retail store in Athens, Greece Team: A&M Architects
This retail project is about the renovation and extension of a butcher store. The main intention is to create an experience for the customer visiting the store. Moreover, the customer can find in this store not only meat products but also anything that could be placed on a dining table, from grocery, deli, cheese and charcuterie products to a large variety of wines and cooking stuff.
So, on the ground floor we create a circular path in the center of which there is a double height glass tower. Following the path, starting from the right corner of the store, the customer can choose the products he wants to buy and he ends up to the left corner where there are 2 kitchen islands. In this spot, an executive chef will give some cooking seminars to customers and they will be able to taste some of the products that they have already bought. The glass tower is actually a fridge where there are some special species of meat.
On the mezzanine, there is an executive kitchen with a cooking lab, a conference space and a meeting room.

APOSPERIA SUITES House Complex in Karpathos, Greece Team: A&M Architects
Aposperia is located in Karpathos. The villas are strategically placed on site to allow for balanced views and spaces between the buildings and the natural landscape. The main intention was to break the various spaces to smaller volumes, respecting the local architecture scale. The architecture follows the topography of the landscape through a series of levels that define the outdoor areas.
Every villa has its own pool with direct access from the living room and a private courtyard. The large openings merge the indoor and outdoor spaces, while guests enjoy living in nature. The volumes are carefully dressed with dark and whitewashed surfaces to peacefully blend with the natural landscape, creating the less possible interruption. Raw metal details as the solid blades to the openings give contemporary hues to the overall design while protect the indoor spaces from the natural conditions.
All villas follow the same interior look & feel with black metal details, white and grey stone surfaces and rustic wooden structures.
