Hello! and welcome to our latest What’s On Guide for the New Theatre Oxford. As the new Theatre Director, it gives me great pleasure to introduce this upcoming season of entertainment. I hope you’ll find plenty to entertain you, your family and friends within these pages. Looking through the Guide you’ll also discover interviews with cast members, fun facts, great quizzes and more. On behalf of all the team here, we look forward to welcoming you very soon. Lee Henderson, Theatre Director

Hello From... Lauren Atkins

Customer Experience Manager

Welcome

Highlights in the upcoming programme include The Band, Ant Middleton, The Novello Orchestra, Dylan Moran and Nativity! The Musical. Whether you are a regular or first time visitor, we have a host of great productions for you to enjoy; from award-winning musicals and first class live music, to the very best in opera and comedy.

How did you get the theatre bug? Back in primary school when I performed in Babes In The Wood. I acted through school and college, before going to Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. I owe a lot to my school drama teacher – she is one of my heroes and gave me my love of the theatre. What is the best thing about your job? I love the interaction with audiences. I get to see the results of our hard work when I see their reactions as they are leaving the theatre. One of my favourite times here was during Mamma Mia! when everyone left the auditorium with smiles on their faces, singing ABBA songs. What upcoming shows are you most looking forward to? We have some fantastic productions coming up. The Band will be great because of the songs and Blood Brothers is a show that is close to my heart. I’m especially looking forward to Joanna Lumley. She is an absolute icon and I’m a fan of hers.

ENJOY MORE FOR LESS WITH PRICE PROMISE Our Price Promise tickets are on sale now giving you access to the very best of UK theatre and live entertainment from as little as £13. Price Promise tickets are available wherever you see the PP symbol. Tickets are limited and sold on a first come, first served basis.

La traviata Verdi

6 | ATGTICKETS.COM

Rossini’s Cinderella

The kind-hearted Angelina (Cinderella) is forced to scrub the floors by her wicked stepfather, while her ugly sisters prepare to go to the ball. As she dreams of a better life she is visited by a mysterious old beggar man. He tells her she will go to the ball, and will also be rewarded for her kind heart. Will she live happily ever after?

The conflict of duty and thwarted love has made La traviata a favourite with opera audiences across the world. This classic production with sumptuous mid 19th century costumes features some of Verdi’s most evocative music.

WNO transports you into a candy-coloured world of fairy tale full of wit, larger than life characters and vibrant costumes. Tomáš Hanus conducts Rossini’s sparkling score, as we watch La Cenerentola transform from rags to riches through the power of music.

Prokofiev

David Pountney’s new production, conducted by WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus, will be as ambitious and epic in scale as the novel itself. The huge set, video projections and stunning costumes portray the grandeur of Russian society in the 1800s.

La Cenerentola

Alfredo, has fallen head over heels in love with the courtesan Violetta, but his father Germont disapproves. Penniless and fearing she will soon die, Violetta agrees to leave Alfredo believing it is in his best interest. It is only when Germont hears that she is on her deathbed that he realises the error of his ways, and confesses all to Alfredo. But is it too late?

War and Peace Based on Leo Tolstoy’s novel, War and Peace follows the tribulations of Russian society as Napoleon edges closer to the country’s borders. The spirited Natasha and her betrothed Andrei find their love is challenged, while Pierre, an idealistic nobleman, wants to change society for the better. Their fates intertwine during the 1812 invasion when Russian lives would change forever.

EDITORIAL

Written by Tim Firth, who also collaborated with Gary Barlow on The Girls, under the auspices of theatrical aces David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers. Gary, Howard, Mark and Robbie are also producers for the show. When a musical has a band and a group of devoted fans at its heart, asking the ladies of the cast if they have a point of reference briefly creates minor chaos. Before you can say ‘Jackie Magazine centrefold’, the names of popstar crushes are being revealed, accompanied by shrieks of disbelief and gales of laughter.

On ‘The Band’ wagon Vicky Edwards has a cuppa and a chat with the ladies of Take That’s new musical The Band

‘I loved the Kemp boys, especially Martin because at gigs he sat on the edge of the stage and dangled his legs over the side, so if you were down the front you could touch him,’ volunteers Rachel Lumberg, who plays Rachel. ‘It was Duran Duran for me,’ chimes in Emily Joyce (Heather in the show). For Jayne McKenna (who plays Zoe), the relatively recent loss of her idol sees her close to tears: ‘I saw David Bowie four or five times and I loved him’. For baby of the bunch Alison Fitzjohn (who plays Claire), her crush is perfectly in tune with the show. ‘For me it was all about Take That,’ she swoons. But while The Band’s soundtrack is Take That’s songs, the show itself is not actually about Gary, Howard, Jason, Mark and Robbie. Instead it tells the story of a group of 16-year-old friends

A U G U S T – N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8

for whom in 1992, ‘the band’ is everything. 25 years on, the now 40-something women reunite as they try once more to fulfil their dream of meeting their heroes. ‘Tim has written a fantastic story, which married together with the music of Take That is the perfect combination. The boys from Let it Shine [the TV talent show that cast the group Five to Five as ‘the band’] are brilliant and bring such an amazing element to it. It’s also cross-generational; you’ve got the kids who would have watched Let it Shine, Take That fans and then the mums and dads of Take That fans. It’s totally relatable and I think it’s going to be a joy to watch – a real trip down memory lane’ says Alison. Telling me that the creative team that works with Take That on their big arena shows will also work on The Band, Jayne continues, ‘Their shows are spectacular. If that’s not a reason to come then I don’t know what is.’ Emily says ‘It is so well written and audiences will, I think, go away feeling like they have been on a huge emotional rollercoaster of a journey – and Take That can’t half write a good tune!’ Promising to send you home having experienced a heady mix of laughter, tears and sheer spectacle, all set to the soundtrack of Take That hits, I reckon we’ll all want to jump on this fabulous bandwagon. ©Vicky Edwards. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it ‘BRINGS THE AUDIENCE CHEERING TO ITS FEET AND ROARING ITS APPROVAL’ – The Daily Mail. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY

Sleep no more...

Richard Alston brings to Oxford his brand new Brahms Hungarian Dances to Brahms’s hugely popular music, swooning along with abandon. ‘ALSTON AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME’ –

Debra Craine, The Times

ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN PERFORMED BY GARY MULLEN AND THE WORKS

The ruined aftermath of a bloody civil war. Ruthlessly fighting to survive, the Macbeths are thrust towards the crown by forces of elemental darkness.

In 2000, Gary Mullen won ITV’s Stars In Their Eyes Live Grand Final, with the largest number of votes ever received in the show’s history. Gary began touring on his own and in 2002 formed The Works paying tribute to rock legends Queen.

From the National Theatre, producers of War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, this new production propels Shakespeare’s classic tragedy into a post-apocalyptic world of anarchy and uncertainty. Following a sold-out run in London, this epic production comes to Oxford in January.
