IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM HANDLING SESSIONS Inspired by key themes from the First World War, a travelling box will visit schools across the country linking to some of the key moments in War Horse. Imperial War Museum have curated sensational items from across all of the collections, which powerfully enhance and highlight experiences that would have happened to some of the characters in War Horse.

WAR HORSE LEARNING
To celebrate War Horse galloping its way back onto the Sunderland Empire stage, Creative Learning and Community Partnerships are working with National Theatre Learning in planning an extensive range of activities to coincide with and complement the learning and creative outreach potential of this significant production. We invite teachers to contact us to express an interest and discuss how your school can benefit from the inspiring education resources of War Horse. Here is our provisional offer of War Horse Learning.
WAR HORSE PUPPETRY WORKSHOP Designed to give students a hands-on understanding of how to create characters through puppetry and physicality; the workshops give a taste of the devising process through which the War Horse horses come to life. This workshop will be run by National Theatre practitioners who have worked as performers and puppeteers in the production. Cost: £180+VAT
These onstage pre-show events are specifically designed to unlock the extraordinary creative learning opportunities of War Horse. Students will have the unique experience of interacting with members of the War Horse Creative and Acting Company and the National Theatre’s Learning team to explore some of the background principles of puppetry, the rehearsal and technical processes that have brought this magical production to life, as well as a chance to ask questions of company members at the end.
WAR HORSE THEATRE TOURS Take a step back in time on a special heritage tour of our wonderful theatre. Focusing on the history of the theatre during the Great War, hear the stories of Sunderland’s involvement in the War and how the theatre was affected. Whilst giving you the opportunity to see inside our Edwardian theatre and learn about the venue’s rich history. This educational tour is the perfect way to complement your visit! Suitable for: All ages Tour Costs: £5 per person for groups of 10+ £3 per person for school groups of 20+ Please advise us of any access requirements before booking. Please note tour prices do not include a show ticket.

FAME SHOW WORKSHOP Join us for an immersive and invigorating workshop drawing on the themes of Fame! This show explores issues that confront many young people today including prejudice, identity, pride, literacy, sexuality, substance abuse and perseverance. Our engaging and interactive workshops can be tailored to suit the academic needs of your group. Contact us for information on how we can support work happening in school and the classroom.

PANTOMIME WORKSHOPS Fun and engaging with Fairy Tale themes, our panto workshops perfectly complement a visit to the show and are a great addition to classroom learning. SHADOW PUPPETRY WORKSHOPS Who is Peter Pan without his shadow? Using the story of Peter Pan as a stimulus, students work together to explore characterisation and develop techniques to create their own shadow puppets using a backlight and screen. This workshop is designed to develop collaborative and creative skills and is a great way to complement your pantomime visit! This workshop can be tailored to suit the educational needs of your group. Suitable for: KS1 – 5 (5 – 18) Cost: £160+VAT for groups of up to 25 students. HORRIBLE HISTORIES EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP A fun and engaging workshop opportunity inspired by the humour of author Terry Deary. Students will delve into the past and learn through a series of drama based exercises to establish a better understanding of the Terrible Tudors or the Awful Egyptians. This workshop can be tailored to learning back in the classroom.

KINKY BOOTS CONFIDENCE BUILDING
Inspired by the themes of individuality and resilience, follow in main character Charlie Price’s boot-steps and develop the confidence to be yourself. The workshop uses discussion and dramatic activities to apply the show’s themes to contemporary contexts, focusing on decision making whilst learning dramatic and teambuilding skills.
