It’s about getting the career you want, right?

Speaking a foreign language will probably not get you hired of its own accord, however, it might give you enough of a different outlook on the world so that it becomes easier to get promoted. In my own experience I have found it easier to understand a perspective other

than my own once I learned a foreign language. I feel that speaking with others - especially those of a different culture allows the mind to expand. The foreign languages that are in demand in the marketplace are Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish. There are enough people that speak these languages as their native tongue. That said, being able to

speak another language usually goes along with a some level of cultural immersion. It is that cultural immersion that can give you “a leg up on the promotion ladder.” People that speak more than one language tend to take a broader view of the world and this attribute makes an individual a more valuable employee because s/he is

Prior to his retirement in 2012, Hal worked for Roy Talman and Associates in Chicago, first as an executive recruiter and then as Director of Business Development. Hal has been a guest lecturer on the subject of resumes, interviewing and developing effective hiring methodology. He has spoken at Booth, the Graduate Business School at he University of Chicago, at DePaul University, at Columbia College and at MIT Forums.
