Our Mission

A great year with a great deal to celebrate.

Asphalt Green is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing sports and fitness programs to all New Yorkers. We give highquality instruction to people of all ages and backgrounds. Our belief is everyone — youth, adults, and seniors — should have access to programs that promote healthy lifestyles. who we served in 2014–2015:

Dear Friends, Each year, we strive to fulfill our mission of growing the number of active and healthy New Yorkers, and this past year was a winner! Now in our 40th year, thanks to the support of the Asphalt Green community and our generous donors, we’ve expanded in all areas: • Our free community programs, which include Community Sports Leagues, Recess Enhancement Program, Waterproofing, and Senior Fitness, grew from serving 7,500 people in 2010 to over 31,000 people this past year. • We celebrated the 20th anniversary of The Big Swim, our free swim meet for children ages 6 to 12, and raised a record-breaking $1 million that supports all of our free community programs.

3.6 million

visits to our facilities annually.

31,000

New Yorkers served through our free community programs.

104 public schools

• Both of our facilities saw upgrades and improvements. Our Upper East Side campus added an indoor turf field  equipped for indoor soccer and more! Improvements to our Battery Park City campus include a dedicated martial arts studio and larger indoor turf area. Both fitness centers have upgraded equipment and now offer world-renowned Les Mills™ group exercise classes.

Swim

A lifelong skill and a lifetime sport We believe swimming is an essential life skill. Our Waterproofing program provides free swim and water safety instruction to New York City public school students. Children from 45 schools learn water safety and how to swim through the program. Our two beautiful pools — 50-meters (Olympic size) at our Upper East Side campus and 25-yards at our Battery Park City campus — are home to our first-class swim programs. Infants, beginners, adults, and athletes training for the Olympics flock to our facilities to receive the best instruction.

Drowning is the second-leading cause of injury-related death in children ages 1 to 14; Waterproofing helps prevent this tragedy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: KRYSTAL LARA

Asphalt Green has brought amazing opportunities for not only this community, but also for all of New York City.

Krystal’s passion for swimming shines through in her work ethic. A threeyear member of the Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) Swim Team and Swim for the Future scholarship athlete, she trains six days per week, and her hard work is paying off. She qualified for the June 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-meter backstroke and earned a scholarship to swim at Northwestern University in the fall.

FITNESS 4 in 5 girls were observed participating in active recess with a REP coach present. Prior to implementing REP, only 1 in 5 girls were observed participating. multi-year independent study conducted by hunter college

Motivating New Yorkers of all ages to move more We are dedicated to helping individuals of all fitness levels reach their goals. Our team of fitness experts is committed to inspiring a love for physical fitness and teaching healthy habits to better everyday life. Recess Enhancement Program (REP) provides safe, active recess, instilling healthy habits at an early age. However, an active lifestyle can be adopted at any age, and our Senior Fitness program is committed to keeping our older population moving and strong! We partner with senior centers and open our doors to those who want to make a positive change in their lives.

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT: P.S. 180

Lana Fleming, principal of P.S. 180 in Harlem, implemented REP in her school this year. Since doing so, she’s seen many positive changes in her students including improved social and behavioral skills, increased participation from girls, and more motivation to learn. Lana believes REP has provided balance during a highly structured, academically intensive school day.

Our mission [at P.S. 180] is really about excellence—not only education but also enrichment. Asphalt Green programs help us in meeting and fulfilling that mission. lana fleming school principal 5

SPORTS

Embracing competition through athletics Our sports programs are structured to allow individuals of all levels to progress at their own pace to reach their potential. Classes teach basic skills, recreational leagues allow budding athletes to practice their skills, and competitive teams hone technique and mental toughness to face the best in the nation. Our free Community Sports Leagues give middle school children the opportunity to participate on an organized team. Children learn intangible life skills including teamwork, sportsmanship, responsibility, and healthy exercise habits.

Adolescents who play sports are eight times more likely to be active at age 24. perkins, d. (2004). childhood and adolescent sports participation as predictors of participation in sports and physical fitness activities during young adulthood. youth society, 35 (4), 495-520.

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: MARK*

This has opened up a whole new world of opportunity for Mark* but it all began at an Asphalt Green free community soccer clinic in the Bronx. kelvin martinez soccer coach

When Mark, 10, attended his first free soccer clinic run by Asphalt Green at Roberto Clemente State Park, he was hooked on the sport. The eightweek program was founded by Eugene Schneur, a soccer dad who saw the positive impact the sport had on his daughter. His company, Omni New York, LLC, teamed up with Asphalt Green to build the program and bring the soccer experience to kids, like Mark, who live in low-income housing in the Bronx. Mark’s natural talent shined through, and coaches encouraged him to try out for the Asphalt Green Soccer Club competitive team. He did so, earned a spot on the team, received a scholarship, and has a new community to call home. Mark’s mom credits soccer to his improvement in school and teaching him responsibility and structure. *name has been changed.

SCHOLARSHIPS Children gain body mass index (BMI) nearly twice as fast during the summer as during the school year The CDC recommends one hour of exercise per day for kids. von hippel, powell, downey, and rowland 2007

Sports and fitness opportunities for all New Yorkers We believe everyone should have the opportunity to discover their passion for sports and fitness. This year, we awarded over $300,000 in athletic and camp scholarships, providing 60 percent more camp scholarships and 34 percent more athletic scholarships than in 2014. Our scholarship athletes and campers integrate seamlessly into our programs and therefore are able to thrive on our competitive sports teams and at Summer Day Camp.

COINS FOR CAMPERS

Our smallest donors made a big impact during our annual Coins for Campers fundraiser. Children attending Summer Day Camp collected money to support our Summer Day Camp Scholarship, which gives kids from all economic backgrounds the opportunity to experience summer camp. The cause resonated particularly close to 7-year-old Sophia’s* heart; she was afforded the opportunity to attend camp with a scholarship. Sophia took action, sending a letter to her family and friends asking for donations. After campers emptied their piggy banks, they raised $21,839.15. *name has been changed.

Someone collected money so I could go to camp, so I collect money for other children to have a scholarship.
