31,000 + New Yorkers through FREE COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Recess Enhancement Program WATERPROOFING COMMUNITY SPORTS LEAGUES SENIOR FITNESS PROGRAM asphalt green FACILITIES

Making an Impact Across New York City What your support makes possible Dear Friends, For more than 30 years Asphalt Green has provided free programs for children and seniors throughout New York City. Each year, we are humbled by the support of the Asphalt Green community, and this year is no exception. We are proud of what we have accomplished, and your support made it possible. Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to provide more than 31,000 New Yorkers free community programs on our campuses and in schools, community centers, playgrounds, and pools throughout the city. In the past year, we significantly expanded our reach and successfully encouraged more people to get moving and active, especially kids who come from neighborhoods with low physical activity levels and high risk of chronic health issues. Everyone should have access to the benefits of sports and fitness: learning how to swim, building confidence, encouraging teamwork, and improving strength, stability, and quality of life. We turn our vision into a reality by providing the following programs for free: • Recess Enhancement Program • Waterproofing • Community Sports Leagues • Scholarships • Senior Fitness program Thank you for helping us impact the lives of thousands of New Yorkers in more ways than we can possibly imagine. The stories of people who have been positively affected by our programs motivate us every day to continue our mission of sports and fitness for a lifetime. We hope their stories inspire you as well. Sincerely,

Andy Nussbaum

Why Sports and Fitness Matter Sports and fitness have measurable and intangible benefits

Our goal is to inspire a love of sports and fitness in people of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of economic status. Why? • Physical fitness improves quality of life, health, and academic achievement.1 • Children learn valuable life lessons from wins and losses in sports. • Team participation teaches children to respect and appreciate the differences in others. • Active play develops social skills and lifelong friendships. Our programs make an impact. They: • Ensure children develop healthy exercise habits and experience an active lifestyle through our fee-based classes and sports leagues and free Recess Enhancement Program. • Build a strong foundation for a lifetime of involvement in sports through our Waterproofing program and elementary-age sports instruction. • Provide a pathway for children to pursue competitive sports through our Community Sports Leagues and scholarship programs. • Offer free health and fitness opportunities in Senior Centers. • Provide an environment for adults to develop fitness through our pools, group and personal exercise classes, triathlon team, swim team, and other programs. Asphalt Green welcomes more than 1 million visitors to our facilities annually, plus we touch thousands more in the community. Our goal is to enrich the lives of all New Yorkers!

Conquering Fears One Lap at a Time Swim instruction provided to 2,500 children for free through Waterproofing Clara attends the Grand Concourse Academy Charter School and is repeating second grade. Clara’s self-confidence was damaged by negative influences both in and out of school, and she was beginning to doubt her ability to excel. When Clara began Waterproofing, her confidence soared. In a short time, Clara became known as the best swimmer in her class. She quickly achieved her goal of swimming across the pool and consistently beat the boys in races. Beyond teaching her to swim, Waterproofing improved Clara’s confidence, and she now believes that she can be successful in many endeavors. Kids like Clara are in Waterproofing every year from the South Bronx to Brooklyn. Once someone learns to swim, it is a lifelong fitness skill. Swimming can be done at all ages, despite many physical challenges or chronic illnesses, and is limited mainly by proximity to water. One of the main obstacles to becoming a swimmer is simply the opportunity to learn how. We worked with 43 public schools to Waterproof 2,500 children.

4

wa·ter·proof·ing (ˈwɔ tərˌpru fɪŋ, ˈwɒt ər-) n. Our free swim instruction program for 2,500 second graders across New York City teaches a survival skill while instilling a lifelong fitness habit.

5

re·cess en·hance′ment pro·gram (rē′sĕs′, rĭ-sĕs′ ɪnˈhænsmənt prō′grăm′, -grəm) n. We partner with New York City public elementary schools to provide 27,500 students physical activity programs during lunch and recess periods.

6

Keeping Play and Fitness in Schools Recess Enhancement Program transforms play into an organized, safe, and active time Remember when recess was a time you could really be a kid, go outside to play, and get a much-needed break from sitting and studying? Studies show that recess works — not only does it improve academic achievement, but an active recess is one of the main ways kids can get the recommended 60 minutes of exercise they need daily. In many New York City schools, children are unable to meet the recommended physical activity requirement. Unfortunately, recess has been eliminated or is inactive due to overcrowding, co-located schools, or limited spaces. PS 375M in East Harlem is no exception. Co-located with two other schools, they share common spaces like the cafeteria, auditorium, and gym. This year, their large Lexington Yard is under construction, forcing 200 students into a much smaller yard until spring 2015. Instead of letting recess become movie or quiet time, our Recess Enhancement Program (REP) combats these obstacles with strategic, creative, and unique activities that engage children to get them moving.

“ Asphalt Green and the Recess Enhancement Program team have been very helpful at keeping recess active and organized while our playground is under construction. They have collaborated with our staff to create scheduled routines in different spaces that have helped us maintain the structure and activity levels every day. Asphalt Green is a team player and true part of our school community.” Principal Lisette Caesar PS 375M

Our dedicated coaches and administrators have worked closely with the school staff to ensure recess promotes active play, despite the limitations of being in an urban setting. At PS 375M and 60 other schools, REP coaches provide active play for 27,500 students.

7

com·mu·ni·ty sports leagues (kə-myo͞o′nĭ-tē spɔːts lēgz) n. We provide 750 middle school children from low-income neighborhoods access to organized sports like flag football, basketball, and soccer.

8

No “ I ” in Team Community Sports Leagues teach 750 middle school kids life skills on the field Eastside Community School’s teams travel to our Upper East Side campus from the Lower East Side for flag football. In their first season in our Community Sports Leagues (CSL), their team was the smallest in the league, filled with beginners and faced with a steep learning curve. They quickly proved that what they lacked in experience and size, they made up for with effort and teamwork, earning third place in the league. Justin, a wide receiver, is an eighth-grade captain for his team. In his first game, Justin scored five touchdowns and helped bring his team to their first victory. Justin understands the importance of teamwork, recognizing that each of the players and the coach were key in getting the team their first “W.” More than 750 middle school students from 16 New York City public schools and charter schools participate in our flag football, basketball, and soccer Community Sports Leagues. Kids get a complete competitive experience with jerseys, cleats, and games under the lights on our field on Saturday nights. In New York City, children from low-income neighborhoods have limited access to team sports and exercise. Through team sports, players learn important life skills such as sportsmanship, responsibility, and healthy exercise habits.

9

Access to Team Sports, Regardless of Economic Status Scholarship athletes make kids and teams stronger Krystal, 16, is working hard balancing her demanding workload at Stuyvesant High School and her Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) swim team practice schedule. A multi-year scholarship recipient, Krystal is a dedicated and disciplined athlete whose accomplishments have made her a prospect to watch in competitive swimming. “I am very thankful for this scholarship because it has given me the opportunity to swim with AGUA — one of the best swim teams on the East Coast. I love it here. It’s been a great opportunity for me and my family.” Krystal has a Swim for the Future Scholarship, created in memory of two Masters team members who died on 9/11. The scholarship has been given to young, talented swimmers like Krystal every year since 2001. Too often children with exceptional athletic ability are unable to nurture their skills because of the high cost of competitive sports teams. With scholarships, Asphalt Green opens our doors to these children on our AGUA swim team and Asphalt Green Wave soccer teams. Our scholarships also give children the opportunity to attend Summer Day Camp. Last year, scholarships were given to 220 children, providing valuable opportunities to learn and grow.

10

schol·ar·ships (skŏl′ər-shĭp′s) n. We offer more than $250,000 per year in scholarships for our sports, camps, and aquatics programs.

11

sen·ior fit·ness programs (sēn′yər fĭt′nĭs ˈprəʊɡræmz) n. We work in partnership with the NYC Department for the Aging and three senior organizations in East Harlem to provide fitness and aquatics classes to help seniors remain healthy and active in their communities. 12

Young at Heart and Working Out Senior Fitness program helps make life possible

Helene, 69, struggled daily due to a limited range of motion in her knee and left arm. The simple act of walking up stairs or sitting down in a chair was incredibly challenging. In September 2013, she signed up for Asphalt Green’s free 14-week Senior Fitness program for those at the Stanley Isaacs Neighborhood Center. The program offers free exercise classes to help improve balance, strength, endurance, and flexibility. Upon completion of the program, participants are eligible for a free membership at Asphalt Green — as long as they use it and complete a certain number of workouts per month. While Helene struggled at the start of class and almost dropped out, she did not quit and has since seen incredible results — her doctor also believes that she may no longer need knee surgery, and she is now considered pre-diabetic instead of diabetic! Asphalt Green has a vibrant community of senior citizens in our fitness programs. As both “boomers” and seniors alike look to remain active and agile, our free Senior Fitness program assists many New Yorkers for whom this is a difficult task because of financial hardships.
