ANNUAL REPORT 2012

Board of Directors Andrew J. Nussbaum CHAIRMAN

Remembering the Past and Building the Brightest Future 2012 has been an incredible year for Asphalt Green — one might call it our Olympic year, thanks to Lia Neal’s victory in the London Games!

Anne Donovan Bodnar VICE-CHAIR

Our successes are a reflection of our past: it’s a good time to remember some key historical milestones. Asphalt Green’s story is one of courage, hard work, and generosity.

Thomas Newman TREASURER

In the late eighties, George and Annette Cross Murphy were significant benefactors, establishing Asphalt Green as a nonprofit to help New Yorkers of all means, ages, and abilities enjoy the health benefits of fitness and recreation. The City’s former Asphalt Plant was opened as Asphalt Green — home to land sports of all kinds, as well as our incredibly popular Summer Day Camp. A regulation soccer field was soon laid, preserving 3.5 acres of open space where none had existed.

Then, in the early nineties, Albert Zesiger worked tirelessly to build Manhattan’s only indoor 50-meter Olympic-standard swimming pool. The AquaCenter opened in 1993, establishing Asphalt Green as a leader in aquatic sports. Knowing inner-city kids lacked access to swimming, we also committed to teaching tens of thousands of public school kids to swim for free through Waterproofing. The tragedy of September 11, 2001 took the lives of two beloved Masters swimmers. Their teammates and families channeled their grief into something selfless by creating the Swim for the Future Scholarship Fund. Over the years, with the generosity of many New Yorkers, Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) has become the most diverse swim team in the country. This summer, Asphalt Green sent five swimmers to the US Olympic Trials: three of them Swim for the Future scholarship recipients. Lia Neal made the women’s 4 × 100 freestyle relay team. She was the only African-American member of the US women’s swim team, and the second African-American woman in USA swimming’s history. Lia won a Bronze medal, also breaking the 17 and under American record. In my ten years as Board Chair, I have never been more energized and proud to lead Asphalt Green. Though we’re facing a major challenge to fight the City’s plan to open a garbage dump next to our campus, we will keep our promise to New York City. That promise is to build champions of all kinds, from fitness members who get in their daily workouts, to kids overcoming fears and learning to swim in Waterproofing, to elite athletes like Lia Neal. Thank you for being part of our journey. Please continue to support Asphalt Green. Together, we can make sure that the futures of Asphalt Green and New York City are bright, bold, and winning. With best wishes for a Happy, Healthy & Fit 2013,

Founders Annette C. Murphy George E. Murphy, MD 1

What it Takes to Be a Champion At Asphalt Green, we believe everyone can be a champion. Whether you’re a Fitness Center member, a swim or soccer parent, a Triathlon Club competitor, Masters swimmer, or a generous donor to our free Community Programs, you embody “sports and fitness for a lifetime.” That makes you spirited, special, and strong. For New Yorkers who can’t afford Asphalt Green’s fee-based programs, we offer free Community Programs and scholarships. More than 26,000 public school kids are exercising because of Asphalt Green. The kids we serve, our recess coaches and swim instructors who teach with encouragement and care, and the schools who partner with us: they are all champions too. They are embracing exercise, sport, and teamwork as essential parts of the school day. This year, we’re on our way to doubling our Recess Enhancement Program, which provides a safe, fun, and vigorous recess to more than 22,000 kids in 50 public schools from Chinatown to the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. Waterproofing has nearly doubled as well, thanks to a partnership in the South Bronx. Our Community Sports Leagues have 600 middle school kids playing league-based soccer, flag football, and basketball. The importance of our scholarship programs was highlighted in the most inspiring way at the London 2012 Olympics when Lia Neal — our grandest champion yet — won a Bronze medal. Being a champion takes dedication, courage, and incredibly hard work, especially through setbacks. When Hurricane Sandy devastated our city, and all parks and schools were closed for a week, Asphalt Green’s staff and neighbors responded by rolling up their sleeves. We cleaned up our field and campus, and we were open for business within 48 hours. In the days that followed, we had hundreds of kids and families playing here. Just four days after the storm, we welcomed 870 New Yorkers to one of our free events — Asphalt Screams — for a belated, fitness-filled Halloween. A week later, we were asked by the City to give a group of foster children (whose temporary housing was still without heat and hot water) a place to shower and eat. These kids desperately needed some fun, so we did what we do best: we threw them a pool party and taught them recess games. I hope you enjoy reading our 2012 Annual Report. Thank you for standing with us. In doing so, you champion Asphalt Green’s pursuit of excellence and contribute to a healthier, fitter New York City. With gratitude,

Talent, Perseverance, and Dedication

Celebrating Hard Work, Not Just Success

Albert and Barrie Zesiger have been major champions of Asphalt Green. The AquaCenter would not exist if it hadn’t been for their tenacity and generosity. When Barrie and Al were asked what it takes to be a champion, their answer was: innate talent, perseverance, and a huge amount of dedication.

Building Olympic swimmers takes far more than dedication in the water. Head Coach of Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA), Rachel Stratton-Mills works with her athletes on every level. “Our ultimate goal is swimmers on the Olympic podium, yes, but we also want each athlete to celebrate the hard work, not only the successes.”

Albert and Barrie Zesiger, Board Members and AquaCenter Founders

Al Zesiger’s vision for the AquaCenter — and the many years it took to build it — also required talent, perseverance, and dedication. Barrie said: “Al believed in this so deeply that he never lost hope, even on days when others would have thrown up their hands and said ‘not in my lifetime.’ He got this pool built because he just kept doing his laps — with the City, Asphalt Green’s staff, donors, and the Board.” Al had been a marathoner; exercise was an indispensable part of his life. When his running days had passed, he began searching for a place to swim in New York City. Barrie recalled: “Al quickly learned that the indoor public pools in Manhattan were very small, usually in a basement, or both small and in a basement. They weren’t accessible.” What started as a personal journey for Al soon became about other New Yorkers. Al envisioned a state-of-the-art 50-meter indoor pool with a fitness facility that would serve thousands of New Yorkers regardless of age, ability, and means; and he worked until his dream came true. In addition to incredible fee-based programming, Asphalt Green has taught more than 30,000 children to swim for free. And on the competitive side, in just 20 years, Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) has produced its first Olympian, Lia Neal. 5

Al and Barrie Zesiger have led Asphalt Green to be the organization it is today. Now, “sports and fitness for a lifetime” is a reality for so many New Yorkers.

Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA)

Her top teams work out six days a week in the pool and have four additional sessions of “dry land” training with expert fitness trainers in our gym. Lia Neal earned her Bronze Medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games through incredibly hard work, every day. Just as impressive as her splits, her character is something truly noteworthy. “Our swimmers are incredible athletes, and they are wonderful people. Time is a very tangible gauge of progress, so a swimmer can always improve their own best times. AGUA helps swimmers understand that personal bests also include how you handle challenges and failure — lessons that last far beyond the swim season,” said Stratton-Mills.

Recess Teaches Responsibility and Fair Play Principal Farid Reyes, P.S. 103 x, and the Recess Enhancement Program

Asphalt Green’s Recess Enhancement Program (REP) is in 50 public schools throughout the city from Chinatown to the Bronx, and from Brooklyn to Queens. For many kids, recess is spent either looking for trouble or trying to avoid it, when it should be providing 20 of the recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise. At P.S. 103 x in the Bronx, Principal Farid Reyes is one of REP’s biggest champions. The difference at his school is remarkable; kids learn critical thinking and analytical skills at recess that carry over into the classroom. “Students learn to follow directions, understand expectations, make decisions to maximize opportunities for their team, and to use the rules to benefit others.” According to a Hunter College study, REP nearly doubles the rate of vigorous physical activity for students, and incidents of verbal aggression occur four times less frequently in REP schoolyards. But Principal Reyes doesn’t need a study to know that REP is making a difference. “From my window, I can see how the kids are playing and working together. Through games, students learn to ask, ‘What is my responsibility to my classmate?’” Responsibility and cooperation are qualities of a true champion, and values that Principal Reyes brings to P.S. 103 x through REP. 7

Seizing Opportunities

Excellence, Scholarships, and Competition

Rob Betts came to Asphalt Green from the United Kingdom, where he played for a professional soccer club. Rob is used to the demanding schedule and rigorous training required to play at such a high level, and he now brings that discipline to our competitive Green Wave soccer teams.

Natalie Planes, a former Olympic contender, has built our gymnastics program into a fierce competitor on the regional stage. Our Green Wave gymnastics teams compete at Levels 4 through 8 of the USAG Junior Olympic Program and at other sanctioned meets. The boys’ program is producing athletes like Willy, who’s been training since age 4. Now 10, Willy wins every local meet, and he placed third in his level at States last year.

Community Sports Leagues and Green Wave Soccer

Rob also oversees our free Community Sports Leagues (CSL) soccer program for middle school kids who cannot afford fee-based programs. “Our CSL players didn’t grow up playing soccer, so we help them develop skills and foster a passion for the sport.” Six students from Rob’s CSL teams earned scholarships to play on Green Wave teams. Young, deserving athletes get a start on teams with their classmates, learning discipline, teamwork, and skills. After playing a full season and learning the game, the most dedicated and enthusiastic players are given the chance to excel in Green Wave’s competitive environment. Green Wave champions an inclusive, supportive athletic community for kids, giving everyone a chance to enjoy soccer at its finest.

9

Natalie Planes and Green Wave Gymnastics

With support from our generous donors, Asphalt Green is giving young athletes a chance to become star gymnasts with Green Wave. Scholarships enable children like Janasia and Jaheim to develop their skills and compete at the highest levels. Siblings, they commute to Asphalt Green from Harlem to practice. Everyone can get a start in gymnastics at Asphalt Green. Each year, our gymnastics academy program serves almost 1,000 children of all ages and abilities.

Overcoming Adversity and Moving Forward

A Fighting Spirit

Neil Cook’s very first job out of college was as a swim instructor. After spending 30 years as a Wall Street computer systems analyst, he came to Asphalt Green. A Triathlon Coach, he’s also leading our new Adaptive Swim Program for Veterans.

Shannon Gilden was a dancer for many years. Ballet was “the love of my life,” she says. No one can dance ballet forever, though, and saying goodbye to it was incredibly difficult. But Shannon has fought even greater challenges; she is also a leukemia survivor. Now in remission, she feels healthier than ever, and she credits Asphalt Green swim instructor Dmitriy Bushuev with introducing her to a new love: swimming.

Adaptive Swim for Veterans

Every Saturday, physically-challenged veterans meet with Neil to learn, and in some cases re-learn, how to swim. “I don’t focus on the challenges because I don’t want to take them to a place where they are focused on difficulties. My job is to move them forward.” Adaptive Swim for Veterans champions those who have sacrificed for our freedom. “We’re helping people do things they did not think they could do. We’re broadening the quality of their lives and experiences by empowering them through swimming,” says Cook.

11

Shannon Gilden, Swim and Fitness Member

There was a period when Shannon lost sight of fitness completely. Her doctor suggested that she lose weight to take the stress off her joints, and recommended swimming for low-impact exercise. Shannon never learned to swim as a child, so she had no idea that, as an adult, she would have an intense fear of the water. “It took me 2 ½ years years to master freestyle and breaststroke. Neither Dmitriy nor I will ever forget the day when, in Lane 1, I let go of the wall,” she says. Shannon comes to Asphalt Green every day. “I’m getting stronger and happier with each swim,” she says, “and though it will never replace dancing, it gives me just as much joy.”

Camp Inspires Teamwork and Friendship Summer Day Camp

Asphalt Green’s Summer Day Camp is designed to meet the unique age-appropriate physical, mental, behavioral, and social milestones of every camper. Through instruction in swim, sports, gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, arts and crafts, and more, campers at Asphalt Green learn new skills and acquire an appreciation for health and fitness that will remain with them beyond the summer months. It is no wonder children walk away saying Asphalt Green’s Summer Day Camp was “the best summer of my life!” Oriana Cerrud has a long history with Asphalt Green. As a child, she learned to swim and attended camp here. Now a high school junior, she spends her summer breaks working as a Summer Day Camp Junior Counselor. Oriana says that one of the most important things that Summer Day Camp provides is the opportunity for kids to learn new sports and make friends through games. “Summer Day Camp encourages teamwork and community,” says Oriana. In 2013, Asphalt Green will celebrate 25 years of Summer Day Camp.

Oriana Cerrud, fellow counselors, and the Teddy 6 group participated in the annual Coins for Campers scholarship drive. 13

Keeping Fit at Any Age Special Programs for Seniors

Seniors have special fitness needs to remain strong, agile, and active. Asphalt Green is proud to serve 300 New York City seniors for free every year. Our seniors prove fitness really can be for a lifetime. Twice a week, seniors from our long-standing partner, Union Settlement, look forward to participating in specially-designed classes focusing on agility, dynamic balance, strength, and flexibility. They also utilize our commercial machines with the help of our trainers. A majority of participating seniors consistently score at or above average for their age groups in fitness tests, demonstrating that regular training brings great results. In 2012, we also hosted Senior Summer at the Thomas Jefferson Park pool in East Harlem for eight weeks on the hottest summer mornings. Working with Asphalt Green fitness experts, seniors up to 87 years-old improved their fitness through water exercise — and had a great deal of fun. The joy of fitness was also present at Senior Field Day with the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center in September. Volunteers from Ernst & Young joined our coaches and got 50 seniors practicing Tai Chi, dancing, and playing volleyball on our field. 15

Giving Back and Going the Distance Kyoko Kobayashi, Masters Swimmer and Donor Kyoko Kobayashi, a Masters swimmer, quickly realized that Asphalt Green is more than a beautiful pool. Kyoko travels from Astoria, Queens, and often arrives early for her 7:30 p.m. practice. Catching up on her work  —  financial translating  —  in the pool stands, she noticed the AGUA teams practicing. When Kyoko learned about the Swim for the Future Scholarship Fund, she made a generous contribution. “I wanted to support this excellence by giving back. I believe in these kids. At Asphalt Green, and through swimming, they realize opportunities they would not have had.”

Gilles Chaladon, Masters Swimmer and Big Swim Volunteer Since 2004, Gilles has been training with Masters. In the spring, he gives his time to help Waterproofing students prepare for their first big race at Asphalt Green’s Big Swim. Waterproofing teaches second graders to swim during their school day. Children who have never been in a pool before become deep water competent in a single school year. For Gilles, it’s a way to be of service and help others learn to love the water.

Fleur Sohtz, Tri Club Member and Fundraiser Asphalt Green has been a huge part of Fleur’s life. As a high school athlete in Brooklyn, it was where she became New York City Champion in two key swimming events. It is also the place she returned for triathlon training after spending five years in London. In August of 2012, Fleur dedicated her key race  —  the Alcatraz Sharkfest  —  to fundraising for Waterproofing in the South Bronx. In just a few months, she raised more than $10,000 to teach public school kids to swim for free.

Also pictured are AGUA swimmers Michael Domagala, Latrell Evans, and David Diaz. Michael broke the 200 freestyle National Age Group Record (Boys 15–16), Latrell graduated from Waterproofing in 2006, and David volunteers with both AGUA and Waterproofing while he prepares for college.
