Board of Directors

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Andrew J. Nussbaum CHAIRMAN

Dear Friends of Asphalt Green:

Stewart B. Clifford VICE-CHAIR

Thomas Newman

The fiscal environment we all experienced in 2009 is not one you plan for…yet it is difficult to imagine how Asphalt Green could have turned in a more impressive performance, whether one looks to our growing engagement with the City’s most vulnerable communities, our first class service to members and users, or our fiscal and organizational strength. Your Board of Directors has remained squarely focused on ensuring that we remain fiscally viable and responsible without compromising the high quality of our programs and facilities. While certainly challenging, 2009 provided us with opportunities to do even more with the donation dollars you kindly entrust us to use most effectively.

We see this focus reflected in the quality of the now-completed renovation of the Asphalt Green sports field and other outdoor facilities. We finished on time, on budget, and anyone jogging, playing, throwing, kicking, batting, jumping, summer day camping or otherwise testing out the new “real turf” feel of the field will appreciate both the structural quality and environmental friendliness of the end result. We successfully met the $2.9 million Field of Dreams capital campaign goal, thanks in large part to generous support from our community partners and long time members. The project created more available space for income-generating activities, while addressing the broader community’s need for greater access to open space in which to play and exercise.

Scott A. Rodeo, MD Patricia A. Saunders Albert L. Zesiger Barrie R. Zesiger

Honorary Board Robert R. Cross

Founders Annette C. Murphy George E. Murphy, MD

We also see the focus reflected in the successful establishment of a new Department of Community Programs and in the qualitative growth and expansion of Waterproofing, the Recess Enhancement Program and the Community Sports Leagues programs for kids from underserved New York City schools. We are especially proud of the growing number of scholarships now being awarded to low-income children and youth for Asphalt Green’s renowned summer day camp and competitive sports teams. All our programs are staffed by the best health and fitness professionals New York can offer – our own Asphalt Green team.

A Message from Executive Director Carol Tweedy When I was asked to join Asphalt Green as Executive Director in 1994 I wasn’t sure that my background in community services had prepared me to lead an institution dedicated to sports and fitness. But I quickly realized that my entire career had been about making people stronger in all kinds of ways so they could face life’s many challenges. And that is what Asphalt Green is all about. We help everyone, regardless of background, age or athletic ability, to find the inner power that can assist them in overcoming their limitations. As one child from East Harlem recently declared, “If I can learn to swim, I can do anything!” Now all of us who are concerned about the well being of our communities are facing a grave challenge. New York City is the epicenter of a national crisis of obesity and inactivity that if left unchecked will take a terrible toll on the lives of today’s children. Forty three percent of New York City school children in grades K-5 are overweight! Research now shows that a shocking 80% of children who were overweight at ages 10 through 15, will be obese adults at age 25 and will face serious health risks. 3

Asphalt Green Annual Report 2008-2009

Executive Director Carol Tweedy inspires local children to swim big at Asphalt Green’s 14th Annual Big SwimŽ free swim meet.

Unfortunately, fitness, sports and the development of social skills through physical activity are, as a rule, no longer part of the school day. Yet students who participate in organized sports and recreation generally earn higher grades and have a lower dropout rate than their inactive peers, and are more likely to attend college and get jobs with more responsibility and higher pay. It is for all these reasons that I am passionate about our mission to bring sports and fitness to the most vulnerable New Yorkers. We leverage our fee-based program expertise to provide community services that meet the need for physical activity for the most underserved school children. Both on campus and off, we partner with schools and other not-for-profit organizations to increase involvement in active play, team sports, swimming and physical education – programs that will help children on the path to a lifetime of wellness. At Asphalt Green we are determined to provide every youngster with an opportunity to discover his or her full potential and experience the exhilaration of becoming stronger and healthier through physical activity. It is a great privilege to lead this effort.

BRINGING MOVEMENT, SPORTS AND PLAY TO ALL NEW YORKERS COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Asphalt Green’s primary mission is to make fitness and athletics available for children, youth, families and seniors in low income, underserved communities so they can establish a more active, healthy lifestyle with which to fight obesity and other chronic diseases. Our unique approach to developing community-based programs is governed by our commitment to exceptional instruction. A growing body of new national research is providing evidence of the importance of this mission.

“ What happens in the classroom is essential to preparing children for success, but what happens outside of the classroom, and even on the playground, is just as important.” Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/September 2007

PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN: A Year of Qualitative Growth LET’S PLAY GAMES!

Now operating in elementary schools in Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens, the Recess Enhancement Program (known as REP) was designed nine years ago in response to the dire need for more physical activity for elementary school children, and to create a safe recess environment in which positive social skills can be learned and practiced. This year Asphalt Green successfully re-engineered its peer-to-peer model to impact an even greater number of students at each school, more frequently, and at a lower cost. At the same time many more children will have an opportunity to develop as recess leaders in the program.

WATERPROOFED!

More than 2,300 children from 12 East Harlem elementary schools participated in Asphalt Green’s 14-year old Waterproofing program this year, the highest number in the history of the program. Waterproofing teaches low income school children how to swim, be safe in and around the water and develop a life-long skill that provides physical exercise and promotes fitness. Nineteen instructors from Asphalt Green’s renowned fee-based swim school worked with the children each week in our world-class Olympic-size pool. As a result 78% of participating youth became comfortable in deep water, and they are now considered “waterproofed.”

KEEP MOVING!

Community Sports Leagues (CSL), which now brings 417 youth from nearby underserved communities to Asphalt Green for sports activities, has been the focus of an intense, year-long evaluation process. As a result we added a filled-to-capacity gymnastics class for girls and a boys-only teen basketball league; redesigned the soccer, developmental basketball and flag football programs for boys and girls; and took steps to involve more parents.

“ I’ve seen a big change in the children as a result of REP. They are more engaged at recess; there are fewer accidents, and fighting and bullying have dropped 60%.” Alice Saavedra, Parent Coordinator, PS 63

TRAINING FUTURE TRAINERS:

In partnership with The After-School Corporation (TASC), Asphalt Green operates an apprenticeship and school-to-work transition program for low income high school students. We train teens to work as coaches, instructors, and counselors for elementary age children, and then place the teens in paid internships at Asphalt Green.

POSITIVE COACHING MODEL: Best practices models

including the “Positive Coaching Alliance” philosophy are used in the training of all professional Asphalt Green coaches, teachers, volunteers and interns, and in the design of our curricula. Asphalt Green’s youth sports programs focus on healthy competition, character development and team building, as well as skill development and fitness.

MORE SCHOLARSHIPS!

Asphalt Green is committed to significantly increasing the size of our scholarship program for community programs, fee-based classes, workshops, competitive teams and summer day camp. This year 17 Waterproofing students who showed talent and a passion for swimming received scholarships to Asphalt Green’s renowned swim school. The Land Sports Department awarded 21 scholarships to the Green Wave Soccer program, and two for participation in the Green Wave Gymnastics program. We also awarded Swim for the Future scholarships to 15 competitive swimmers on our AGUA (Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics) youth swim team. And 34 deserving children received scholarships to attend Asphalt Green’s summer day camp this year.

FITNESS FOR YOUTH WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:

Through individual par tnerships with the East Harlem Asthma Foundation, Gillen-Brewer School, Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center and Metropolitan Hospital, children with asthma and developmental and mental health disabilities, as well as at-risk, obese adolescents, participate in specially-designed fitness classes and programs at Asphalt Green.

DEVELOPING SENIOR FITNESS Aging adults must deal with health conditions that range from lack of flexibility, weakness and fatigue, to costly chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, bone loss and falls that often lead to serious fractures. However, we know that aging need not necessarily be accompanied by a loss of significant physical function. The right kind of exercise program can have a profound impact on the health and fitness of even the frailest of seniors. Asphalt Green is one of the only New York City institutions with the expertise and resources to design informed fitness programs for older adults. This year we developed an evaluation “tool kit” – now being used by the Department for the Aging and the United Hospital Fund’s Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) – that serves as a basic guide to the five essential components of an effective senior fitness program:

• Cardiovascular/aerobic conditioning • Muscular strength and endurance • Range of motion • Balance and stability • Relaxation and stress reduction. 7

COMPETITIVE TEAMS: STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE In 2008-2009 our competitive sports teams for youth and adults demonstrated the power of teamwork and expert coaching and training. Congratulations to all the coaches and players for their hard work and outstanding performances! Our 600-member triathlon club had 145 finishers at the New York City Triathlon this year and took 2nd place in the New York City Tri Club Championships. Asphalt Green’s AGUA Masters adult swim team won four gold, four silver and three bronze medals at the 2009 USMS Long Course Nationals. Our medalists ranged in age from 35-80 years. Coming off a year in which seven of its swimmers competed in the Olympic trials, our AGUA youth swim team delivered an outstanding performance at the 2009 Junior National Championships, taking second overall in the women’s competition. The team set 16 AGUA team records and six Metro LSC records at the meet. Two swimmers – Sara Giberson (age 16) and Annie Zhu (14) – were named to the National Junior Team. The Asphalt Green Wave youth soccer program has grown to 20 teams with nearly 300 players. Three of the girls teams – U11 Green, U12 Green and U14 Green – finished first in their leagues in Spring, 2009. The U11 Green Wave boys team competed in the 2009 U.S. National Futsal Championships and made it to the State Cup semifinals.

World-Class, Whatever Your Speed… * Over 1 million visits and growing * 1,345 swimmers every day * 1,938 adults and children on competitive teams * 75 program partnerships with schools and non-profits * One-third of all programs and services are free to the community
