Competition heating up for wheat grower awards Interest in the annual United Wheat Growers competition continues to go from strength to strength with over 100 entries received in this year’s event, and more anticipated for the 2017 competition. Topping 103 entries, the 2016 competition sponsored by ATS Seed proved the strongest yet. United Wheat Growers Director Brian Leadley is optimistic that growth will continue as growers from further afield show an interest in the national event. “While it has typically been growers in the Mid Canterbury/Ashburton area who had entered in the past, we have seen that spread further afield this year to include farmers further north and from South Canterbury.” While expecting most entrants will be from the country’s main wheat growing area, he says farmers from the North Island are also welcome to enter an event open to all New Zealand wheat growers. Brian says the competition is taken seriously by the wheat growers who enter, all who bring their own skills and talent to bear across the four main categories of Feed, Biscuit, Milling-Gristing and Premium Milling wheat.
“We also have the Protein Trophy, sponsored by Tegel, which recognises the ability of a grower to deliver the maximum protein yield per hectare. It is a benchmark that is becoming quite important for the feed sector and this indicates that to growers.” Last year’s Feed Wheat section winner was David Birkett of Leeston, who claimed the title for the second year in a row. He has one eye on conditions early in this season before committing to the competition, but says it is a worthwhile event to showcase the best of what wheat growers can do. “I think a little competition in any sector is always healthy in pushing things along,” he says. His yield this year is still to be confirmed, but he anticipates about 16 tonnes a hectare, one of the best he has had in 10 years. David achieved that with “Oakley”, an older wheat variety. He says with the slide in dairy demand for feed grain, the sector is now more exposed to overseas market prices, and it is making growers more conscious of costs and alternative grain income. “That is why we are seeing a rise in plantings for other types like milling wheat which has also had a big lift in quality over the last few years.” ATS Seed Sales Manager Craig Rodgers says ATS was keen to continue sponsoring a competition
