New look for proven farmer co-op The country’s growing farmer co-operative has its roots firmly in Canterbury, but sights set upon being a nationally focused force in the rural service sector. Ruralco has become the new outward facing brand for long time Canterbury based farmer co-operative ATS, and its management intend to continue the founding co-operative’s reputation for putting farmer Shareholders and their families firmly at front and centre, for services and products. Group Chief Executive Rob Sharkie says the move to one brand from the original ATS-Ruralco alliance has made logical sense. The ATS Co-operative remains the parent company of Ruralco, with Ruralco now the public face. “The original Ruralco brand provided a vehicle for us to launch our Ruralco farmer charge card, in turn an evolution of our original ATS farmer charge card.” “The Ruralco Card enabled us to extend our network of suppliers who would accept the card to business and franchises throughout the country. It reinforced our position as a strong provincial farmer co-operative, but also gave us a national presence.” “Moving on to adopt Ruralco as our outward customer facing brand was a logical next step for us.”

With national reach and local presence through its three Ruralco Farm Supplies stores within Canterbury, Ruralco has managed to differentiate itself from the larger “big box” type farm service retailers. Rob Sharkie says while those operators may offer impressive scale, the level of service and personal contact leaves rural clients feeling more like they have been at a supermarket, than a centre they are Shareholders of.

Ruralco has built valuable strategic relationships with large national suppliers including Ballance Agrinutrients, Meridian Energy and Mobil Fuel. But it has also recruited people who are experts in those areas, capable of offering expert, independent advice in areas including electricity, seeds and crop care.
“Meantime though, we are able to offer economies of scale bigger service companies offer, thanks to the Ruralco Card business enabling us to grow beyond our traditional mid-Canterbury home turf.”
Ruralco Procurement Manager Jono Pavey has welcomed what he says was a logical “next step” for the brand, taking ATS’s regional strength and amplifying it with a more national reach.
Today the Ruralco Card is accepted by over 3,500 businesses nationally.

Meanwhile the three Ruralco Farm Supplies stores are carefully located as retail hubs in Methven, Rakaia and Ashburton for easy access for most Shareholders and Cardholders alike, offering exceptional value to farmers on products at the times of year when they need them the most. The Ashburton based Customer Service Centre offers a swift and efficient solution for orders and deliveries over the phone or via email. Keeping farmer Shareholders at the forefront of the co-operative’s values means the executive team have remained focused on those who use its services, listening to feedback and being able to respond quickly to their needs.

Farm Safety Manual and Training for Members Today’s farmers and land owners are required to actively manage all aspects of health and safety around the farm. The new Health & Safety at Work Act came into force 4th April 2016. To assist with this process ATS plans to provide members with access to a farm safety manual and relevant training. Upon completion of the training, members will be able to apply for a discount on their ACC levies. Training dates for 2017 are the 18th April, 23rd May & 20th June for $550 plus GST. Location for the course is in Ashburton but if there is a need we can arrange another training date in Timaru. Seating is limited so get in fast.
