MAKERHOOD

ACTIVATION 6 - OTARA MAKER’S DAY After the success of Mangere Maker’s Day, MakerHood chose to to re-activate the Makers event, but this in our backyard, OTARA!! The Te Puke O Tara Community Hall was once a central attraction and vibrant space for the Saturday flea markets, but over the years has slowed down with only a few persistent stall holders left. MakerHood saw this as a great opportunity to revamp the space and make it in to the lively place it once was. It was great to see the public get involved and participate, with a lot of youngsters not shy to get their hands dirty, the true Maker’s spirit.

TECH POD

UPCYCLE POD

PALLET POD

UPCYCLE POD THE ROOTS The Roots members mesepa and Losa once again brought great energy to the day. They held upcycling workshops that proved to be an attraction to families. These workshops showed how second hand and waste fabric can be upcycled in to hair pins, necklaces and ear-rings, a creative solution to our waste.

PALLET POD THE ROOTS This pod was activated by The Roots, Otara bred and led initiative. The Pallet Pod was a success in getting young people from the local community involved. It also sparked interest in a lot of people who wanted to make their own furniture with pallets. The outcome was two large pallet sofas, which were later donated to the Te Puke O Tara Community Hall.

TECH POD MESHED CO-OP | TSI The Tech Pod proved to be succesful with a younger audience once again! Jaco took people through tutorials of 3-d modelling on ‘TinkerCad’ and then 3-d printing their designs. Baruk and Joel took the local youngsters through online activities, including MineCraft, showing them technical computer skills and how to orient themselves around a computer.
