NEIGHBOUR‘S

MAKERHOOD
ACTIVATION 1 - NEIGHBOUR’S DAY The first MakerHood activation took place on Neighbour’s Day 2016, a day where New Zealanders strengthen relationships with their immediate neighbours and local communities. MakerHood chose to break ground within the Otara towncentre; a thriving community and home to The Roots Creative Collective. Towards the front end of the township is a newly development public space, but has yet to be receptive to any local projects; this in itself presented M-H a good opportunity to implement “Activation 1”.

BIKE REPAIR POD AUCKLAND TRANSPORT | TRIPLE Ts
The Bike Repair Pod was run by members of Auckland Transport. AT brought along equipment that allowed the users to repair their own bikes, as well as provided bikes. The pod was a success on the day, being a main attraction for local youth and organisations such as “Triple T’s” a locally based cycling group. Recycled bikes were given away as prizes for the youth who fixed them, as well as other members of the public.

UPCYCLE POD THE ROOTS
The Roots ran upcycling pods that taught members of the public to make jewellery out of recycled materials. The pod attracted people of all generations, providing spaces for them to sit and make, as well as a place to watch the events of the other pods. The pod proved to be a success with younger people, allowing them to make their own jewellery and in some cases, jewellery for other members of the family. A pod that encourages intimate engagement between mentors and the public. People of all ages enjoying workshops at the Upcycle Pod
ASSEMBLE POD THE ROOTS, AUT, UNITEC, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS The Assemble Pod was activated by The Roots’ engagement with local high school students. The engagement led to the construction of three installations. The installations were made of recyclable materials bamboo, pallets and milk crates. The collaboration saw Unitec, AUT, high and high school students work with professionals in creative industries. The pods provided storage space and boards for students to sketch out initial and development ideas. Thanks to The Roots and students for creating such an amazing atmosphere.
