letter from the Happy Holidays!

creative editor

Can you believe another year has gone by? I cannot believe that Christmas is less than a month away. It’s crazy how time flies. As the year comes to an end, I have done some major reflecting—the decisions I have made and the ones I will soon be making. As my mom has referred to it: my ‘Quarter Life Crisis.’ Since graduating college, it has seemed that nothing is ever concrete. You’re never really sure where life is going to take you or what’s around the corner. I have spent the last three years of my life trying to figure out what I want to do, where I want to be, and who I want to be. I still haven’t figured it all out. BUT...you wanna know the great part? YOU DON’T HAVE TO. I have spent the last three years trying to answer these questions because I thought I had to. I thought I had to have it all figured out. But you don’t! You can take as much time as you need to figure these things out. And my recommendation is to take that time! My biggest struggle in attempting to figure anything out, is confidence in myself. We all struggle with it: our work, our body image, ourselves, everything. It’s an every day battle for me to have confidence in myself and in my decisions. So in light of continuing my growing process and figuring out who I am, I have (for once) made a new years resolution: in the upcoming year, I want to focus on building confidence in myself and who I am. One of the greatest things about working on this magazine are the women that I have the pleasure of working with; they never cease to amaze me! The confidence that they possess, the class with which they hold themselves, and the honesty and realness of their writing is simply fabulous. I aspire to continue to grow by learning from these women and their contagious attitudes. It has been such a pleasure to be inspired by them and work collectively for such a great venture. I hope the holidays bring you lots of great joy and cheer and that the new year brings happiness and confidence! Make your resolution count! See you next year! Ciao,

Johnna Hetrick

I’ve only ever had one long lasting love affair. It has grown, it has changed and it has adapted through every stage of my life. It’s a true love that will last forever. It’s a love affair with music. I fall deeper in love with music with every new song I hear. And naturally, I love to share my passion with those around me. I am excited to share a small sample of what I listen to, although I must say, it was tough to narrow down. You can find this play list (and many more) on Spotify. I found Sweater Weather through a blog a few months ago and have been in love with this band ever since. Think Maroon 5 meets Radiohead and you get the Neighbourhood. Their sound is unique and each song is different; some haunting, some love struck, some rock. Lead singer, Jesse Rutherford, has a fantastic stage presence in concert that can entertain even though listening for the first time. WINTER 2012

HOLIDAY FOOD DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A FOUR LETTERED WORD! Let’s face it: the holidays are about family, fun & parties but when it really comes down to it —it’s really all about the FOOD! Many of my nutrition clients are surprised when I encourage them to enjoy the special treats of the season since it’s often just one time a year they have them. But let me make a distinction here—I’m talking about Aunt Lizzy’s seasonal pumpkin roll or Grandma’s Christmas morning cinnamon buns not chips and dip and Christmas colored Hershey kisses. Make your calories count! Here are a few of my favorite tips to AVOID gaining weight over the holidays:

of poor quality fats, simple carbohydrates and sugar. They go down easy but create a blood sugar surge (can you say Fat Storage Mode?) followed by a blood sugar dive a short time later and that’s when you find yourself back at the food table. Survey your options—load up on the veggies and anything with protein like cocktail meatballs or chicken satay. Believe it or not—you are better off sampling the crab dip than the sugar cookies—just make sure you are eating it by itself or on a veggie as opposed to a cracker.

GUILT FREE

Holiday Appetizers

Turkey Cocktail Meatballs & Cranberry Jalapeno Jelly Ingredients: • 1 lb of Lean ground turkey (this works better than turkey breast) • ¼ Cup cooked Quinoa or ¼ cup oatmeal • 1 Egg • ⅛ Cup soy sauce • 2 Teaspoons Wildtree’s Garlic Galore • 1 Teaspoon Wildtree’s Ranchers Rub • ½ Jar Wildtree’s Cranberry Jalapeno Jelly In a bowl mix everything but the Cranberry Jalapeno Jelly. Form into cocktail sized meatballs. Place on baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. After they are fully cooked—place in crockpot and cover with the jelly—about half the jar. Allow to simmer in crockpot for at least an hour before serving. These are very stable for long open houses and holiday parties. This recipe as is makes 34 cocktail sized meatballs. TIP: Make sure you get what you want first…They don’t last long!!

Hot Blazin’ Buffalo Chicken Dip Ingredients: • 2 Tablespoons Wildtree’s Blazin’ Buffalo Chicken Dip Blend • 8 oz Vegan Cream Cheese or regular cream cheese • (1) 10 oz can Valley Fresh Organic or Natural canned chicken **You can also use 1 cup cooked chicken that’s been shredded. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Spoon into baking dish that’s been greased with natural grapeseed oil or coconut oil. Bake at 350º degrees for about 20-25 minutes. TIP: This is great served with celery sticks cut on angle or paleo crackers.

afresh look From here, you can shape the crackers in one of two ways: For a thin, crunchy cracker flatten the dough between two sheets of parchment paper (sold in the same aisle as plastic wrap and aluminum foil) then use a rolling pin to get the dough as thin as possible. Remove the top sheet of parchment paper and set the other (with the dough on top) on a cookie sheet. Use a knife or pizza wheel to cut cracker shapes after it’s baked – but do it while it’s still warm. I actually like to bake mine for about 7-8 minutes, remove, cut and then put back in oven to finish baking. Bake for 10-12 minutes —keeping an eye on them so they don’t get too brown. One batch made this way makes approximately 40 1” x 2” crackers.

Paleo Almond Crackers Ingredients: • 2 Cups (8 oz) Raw blanched almond slivers (I find these in large plastic containers in the produce dept. at Super Target in Cosners) • 1 ½ teaspoon Wildtree’s Dill Dip Blend • 1 Egg, whisked • 1 Tablespoon natural grapeseed oil Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a food processor mix nuts and dried dill until nuts reach desired consistency. For textured crackers, leave nuts in tiny pieces. For smooth crackers, blend until nuts reach a flour-like consistency. Note: I actually grind my nuts in a little coffee grinder and it works great. If grinding the nuts in a coffee grinder like I do – then simply dump ground nuts into a bowl and when all done—stir in Wildtree’s Dill Dip Blend. Just make sure you don’t over grind and make almond butter! Next add the dill, beaten egg and oil.

For a thicker cracker with a rounded shape, wrap the dough in a large piece of parchment paper and shape it into a log about 9 inches long and 1-2 inches tall. Use a knife to slice thin pieces of dough into crackers. If the dough is too soft, put it in the freezer for 10 minutes, then cut. **Want to know where to get the organic Wildtree products used in these recipes? Go to www.mywildtree.com/donnah and order online. • ¾ tsp. sea salt or ½ tsp. Wildtree’s Ranchers Rub (www.mywildtree.com/donnah) • ½ tsp Rubbed Sage • ½ tsp. Pepper or Wildtree’s California Pepper Blend (www.mywildtree.com/donnah) • ¼ tsp ginger • ½ tsp. Garlic powder or Wildtree’s Garlic Galore (www.mywildtree.com/donnah) DIRECTIONS Mix all ingredients in large bowl. Shape into eight 2 inch patties. In a nonstick skillet coated with grapeseed oil (I like using the Bacon or Hickory Grilling oil for this) cook patties over medium heat for 6-8 minutes on each side or until no longer pink. **These freeze really well!

CHANGING OF SEASONS Blossoms,

More Than

Colored Leaves & Snowflakes

I grew up in the Deep South, a place that had only two seasons—Hot and Hotter. You can imagine my excitement when I traveled up the east coast to experience four full seasons. My thoughts rang anew with every season: “I really can have four types of coats. My sweaters CAN be worn without sweltering beneath them. The leaves actually change colors and stay for weeks on end. The crisp spring air lingers for more than a (quite literal) hot minute.” I grew accustom to these seasons quite quickly and for nearly the last decade, I have gladly embraced each season transition in it’s entirety: traditions being formed, events that surround said time of year and the fresh ‘splash’ each season brings. This year, the seasons have become especially poignant, probably because I’m finding myself in the midst of a “season change” in my life. Up to this point, a ‘Season of Life’ is something that I’ve only recognized in hind-sight, acknowledging that I had been in a seasonal transition only after the new season had arrived. For the first time, I am recognizing that I am in the midst of a transition without the help of my rearview mirror. It is a rather surreal, out-of-body experience to realize that you are going through this season of change while in the midst of it. For me, it is surreal for several reasons. The first, being, that my seasons are out of sequence. Well, out of sequence for a Type A, by-the-book individual. It is Fall, the leaves are changing, and I am beginning a new chapter in my personal life. Wait, it’s not Spring. Don’t new beginnings only occur when the green grass blades are just cutting through the surface of dirt and the birds

MY BRAIN

by rose wagner

On Food

It’s 10 p.m. You worked hard all day, finished some projects, kept to your diet, barely ate any carbs or sugar, and skipped all of the desserts at the work luncheon, even the mini red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing. You deserve a reward! So, you walk to the kitchen and reach for one mini dark chocolate bar, just one to sooth your sweet tooth… maybe two bars. No more than two, though. Maybe… a little scoop of peanut butter for on top of the chocolate.. just to make it extra special. Ok, two scoops. Wait, we also have chocolate chip cookies in the cupboard? Maybe just one or two of those.. or six. Leftover pizza in the fridge from last night? It was a rough day! I deserve it! A few chips… a few handfuls of skittles, and….

As a professional starver and binger, I have come up with some helpful tips for avoiding these extremes:

I like to call it the ‘starve/binge’ diet, one that I have been practicing for a good while now. There is no such thing as moderation in the ‘starve/binge’ diet, only extremes.

I have not mastered all of these tips just yet. Maintaining balance in my food choices will always be a struggle, as it is for millions of people, but it is one that I am learning more about on a daily basis.

• I am not a dog. Food should not be my reward. • One cookie now is better than six cookies, a chocolate bar, and an ice cream sandwich later. • While a salad seems like a great choice now, it will not keep me full for six hours, and I shouldn’t expect it to. • I will not go to bed with a growling stomach. Starving myself does not cancel out a binge… it only starts the vicious cycle again.

10:15 p.m. One thousand calories later, you • Guilt accomplishes nothing. What’s done is done. Tomorrow is a new day. While these are feeling ashamed, guilty, defeated, and are all clichés, they are true! confused. You go to sleep hating yourself, and wake up the next morning, determined to • Not sure if you’re really hungry? CHUG. CHUG. starve yourself and to exercise like an Olympian CHUG!…. water, that is. to make up for the awful night that you had. • Finally, stop counting the calories! Not all Sound familiar? calories are created equal.

But, why do we do this? Why can we not find a happy medium? Why can’t we let ourselves While your inner starver and binger are battling have treats every now and then in order to it out in your brain, life is happening around you. avoid these damaging binges? Calm down, take a deep breath, and enjoy the events, beauty, and people in your life. They are more important than those cheese fries. 22

travel On a Budget Seeing The World—On A Budget This past spring, besides graduating college (go Dukes!), I received the opportunity every twenty-something hopes for— traveling abroad. I had been dreaming about going to Europe since the ripe age of 12 after reading about the decadent history it had to offer—thousands of years filled with castles and crown jewels and handsome princes. Flash forward ten years; not much had changed. Now 22, my dream was coming true. London was calling my name! To perfect my trip even further, I was heading to the land of fish and chips with my best friend Jessica, her sister Amanda and my sister Kylie. (Some background on our foursome: Jessica and I are the same age and have been best friends since pre-k and our sisters are the same age and haves essentially duplicated our friendship.) Although excited about our impending trip, I had heard horror stories of friends spending thousands of dollars on their European adventures and I could definitely not afford that with my budget. Yet I still wanted to be able to experience London as much as I could. With 5 days and 4 nights of exploring, I wanted to cram in as much of what the city had to offer as possible—and come back to the States without my wallet hating me. Here’s a snapshot of how I made it happen: Plan, Plan, Plan The last thing you want to do is find yourself wandering around overseas with no set itinerary. Money wont last forever, so a plan is key. Before 26

by alyson banks

leaving, the four of us met and went step by step through what we all wanted to do. We scoured the Internet looking for sights that we had always wanted to visit and experience and listed them on a scale of most important to least devastating if we missed it. From that list, the control freak in me color-coordinated each day based on proximity of places to see. For example, if we were going to see Big Ben and also wanted to see the Tower of London, we made sure to put these under the same day of because they were right next to each other. That prevented us from wasting valuable sightseeing time trekking miles and miles by taxi or even by foot. Getting There

We searched for weeks to find a hotel that was affordable and safe. For us, that meant sacrificing a location a little farther out from the center of the city, but still offered free breakfast and snacks with clean beds and showers (also essential). Also make sure wherever you decide to stay has a secure place you can store your passports or ID’s. Most will have a safe in the room that you will be given a code for, but if not, lock them in your suitcase before going out for the day. Otherwise, you will have to bring them with you, which could be even more of a burden.

“I had been dreaming about going to Europe since the ripe age of 12 after reading about the decadent history it had to offer— thousands of years filled with castles and crown jewels and handsome princes.”

Although I lucked out and my airfare was free (thank you Merritt for donating your air miles to your needy travel-deprived cousin), there are plenty of web sites that offer reasonable flights perfect for budgetconscious travelers. A few of my favorites are Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, Kayak, Sidestep, and Priceline. Keep checking in on them religiously to find the best deals. Often if you sign up for email alerts, these organizations will send you promo codes as well which can provide excellent discounts. Hotel or Hostel?

As far as lodging goes, safety is the number one priority. While it’s awesome to be able to find a place to stay that won’t break the bank, you don’t want to put yourself in a situation where you can’t even sleep without having to worry about someone stealing your luggage (or you) in the middle of the night. And trust me, after a long day of walking, photogging (pretending to be a professional WINTER 2012

photographer) and getting your tourist on, you will want to be able to come back to your room and relax. With lodging, Google will become your best friend.

Although we found our hotel through good ol’ fashioned compare and contrast methods, there are also several web sites that allow you to essentially sleep on people’s houses for free. I have never used this method before, but I’ve had a few friends who said it’s reliable as long as you check out the person you will be staying with thoroughly beforehand. On web sites like CasaCasa.org, you become a member of an online community that is willing to host one other. You fill out a form with your hobbies and interests, photos of you and your home, and favorite destinations (yes, it’s almost like a dating web site) and then ask other members if they are willing to let you stay in their spare room. You have to agree to host at least one person during your year of membership. These web sites charge for membership but you can sometimes find promo or discount codes on Google. If you’re 27

brave, you could use CouchSurfing.org. Airbnb.com. This site essentially matches you up with someone who has extra room, or an extra sofa for you to crash on for a few nights. Just remember, research is crucial. Don’t stay somewhere you will regret later.

Dollars and Sense

Finding the best way to transfer your money from American dollars to Euros isn’t as easy as it seems. There are several ways it can be done, but how do you know which will allow you to get the best value for your buck? As much Bottom line: Always trust your instincts. If it as it stinks, the American dollar can only get seems sketchy, it probably is! you so far overseas. The exchange rate is less

You most likely will feel like someone punched you in the face when you’re attempting to function straight off of your flight.” than ideal for our side of the pond with 1 euro = 1.2934 US dollars. But rest assured, making up for the deficit can be done. It just means being all the more educated when going to exchange your money before beginning your travels. There are several means to do so. Most banks will do an exchange for you in the States so that you can already be prepared before even getting to the airport. All airports that offer international flights will have kiosks set up you can go to the day of your flight. However keep in mind, the rates might be a tad bit higher because they know that people wait last minute. Also, lines could be slightly overpriced, and if you’re anything like me, I like to be sure I have plenty of time for Starbucks and to stock up on snacks before boarding my flight (gross airplane food anyone?), so the last thing you want is to risk being late. Just be certain to call the airport you are flying out of ahead of time to see the rate they have and how long it usually takes to make the exchange. Another tip: most of these kiosks also offer buybacks for when you get back into the States so it makes for a quick and easy transfer right when you get off your flight. And most of them offer easy plastic cards that are essentially credit cards you can load your newfound euros onto and swipe wherever you go. However, I would recommend carrying cash Euros as well just in case you take a taxi or want to purchase something from a small boutique that might not take credit cards. Once you get back, the remaining balance from your card can be transferred the same way as cash. Navigating Around Town Fresh off your flight, it’s safe to say you will be exhausted. (International flight + uncomfortable airplane seats = not a lot of

sleep). When we touched down, the first thing we did after lugging our luggage through the airport terminal, down long corridors to the Underground station and finally out into the busy streets was flag down the nearest taxi (aka “cabbie”). However, we quickly learned that although this was certainly the least exhausting way to get around, it was also the most expensive. The ride from Heathrow to our hotel alone was 30 pounds! (In American money that was almost $40). So we realized that when in doubt, the best thing to rely on in the city was our own two feet. From then on, we used the Underground (or subway) system instead. It was much faster, cheaper and surprisingly much easier to navigate than we thought. (Everything is labeled way more than the metro system in D.C. to say the least.) Plus, using this method of transport allows you to rub elbows with the Brits while feeling like one of them. Also, they offer an ”oystercard” similar to the “SmarTrip card” the metro uses where you can load a certain amount of money and simply swipe it at the kiosks before entering the subway system. Another way to see the city and one that will let your feet rest for a few hours are the bus systems. The city buses could be a cheap option, but the buses I’m referring to are those big red double deckers featured in every generic tourist movie. They’re fairly affordable and offer a bird’s eye view of the sites in a rather timely manner. We were able to purchase two-day tickets for 35 pounds a person. The tour stopped at all of the major tourist locations around London like Big Ben, the Tower of London, Hyde Park, Covent Garden, Kensington Place, Parliament and more. So we would pick a stop near our hotel and hop on in the morning and just ride the bus until it got to a stop we wanted to hop off and explore further.

29

Cashing in on Cuisine European food is one of the best experiences in the world. (Eat, Pray, Love anyone?) So naturally, this is one area you don’t want to skimp on. However, balance is key. I would recommend trying to eat one meal a day “in” and the other “out”. For example, our hotel offered complimentary breakfast so that was free. For lunch, if we knew we were going to be out in a busy shopping area or had a certain place in mind we wanted to eat, we would use that meal as our “out” of the day. But for days we wanted to eat “in” for lunch, we went to a local supermarket next to our hotel and purchased a loaf of bread, jelly and peanut butter. While pb and j might not seem that appealing, there are ways to make it fun. Bringing sandwiches to the park and taking in the scenery next to the Thames River sounds a lot more appealing, right? So we packed a sandwich and some fruit or a snack item we acquired from our free breakfast and toted it along during the day until lunchtime. Then those days we would go out for dinner. Using this method we felt like we still got a taste of London’s cuisine while still leaving extra money we could spend on more exciting items…like clothes.

did not belong. And once we did attempt to pronounce such locations like “Covent Garden” (which in my defense is a lot more difficult to pronounce than you would think), we were done for. So just be aware that while you think you are blending in, you most likely are not. This potentially makes you a definite target for every other bad guy that could be lurking the streets. So just keep your ears and eyes open. No one wants another “Taken” situation occurring. Also, recognize ahead of time that you will most likely not be able to do everything on your list. Time goes by very quickly when you’re busy soaking up culture, so even if you plan your itinerary down to the minute, things probably won’t go entirely to schedule. That’s why rating the things you want to see or do in terms of importance is essential to getting the most of your trip. You’ll be able to leave your travel destination feeling satisfied with your international experience.

Lastly, time difference and jet lag is a very real thing. You most likely will feel like someone punched you in the face when you’re attempting to function straight off of your flight. But just keep going. Act like you’re full of energy, stock up on some Starbucks and make the most out of every minute. Also, eating Extra Gems meals on “their time” will help immensely. Although most of the biggies were covered Even if you’re not starving on the first day, your with my travel plans, there were a few things body will quickly adapt once you get into the I wish I had known before landing in London. swing of things. Why did you start taking photos? I remember when I was little and I would always notice the little things about people that made them special. I also LOVED stories. Stories about anything. I loved to listen to people. You can express all of these things through a picture. I love that you tell stories through your photography. SPLURGE VS.

Steal

It is no secret that I am a big fan of J.Crew, but sometimes their prices are just a little bit [a little meaning way too much] out of my price range! In the fall I was looking through their fall looks and I fell so in love with this silk print shift dress that they have. Seriously everything about it is perfect, minus the price tag that came with. I searched everywhere for weeks for a similar one but there were none that even resembled the dress I was lusting over. Then it happened, one day I was in Tyson’s Corner, Washington D.C., during my lunch break and as I was walking out to my car and passed Old Navy and saw this dress in the window. Although its not identical it was eye catching and I couldn’t pass it up... especially since it was only $29.94! I paired it with grey tights to bring out the grey, an oxblood felt hat and boots. It is a great warm winter day look that comfortable yet put together. 48

Color

Transitioning

I think the hardest part of winter is finding enough clothes that will carry over from season to season. Different materials look too summery or wintery and it’s hard to find an item that you can wear year round. Well this shift from The Loft is one of those dresses. When I purchased I justified how many different outfits I could make out of this 1 piece. I envisioned black pumps and a white button up, of course cardigans and this look- a brown turtle neck to “break” the rule of mixing black and brown together.

Being so close to D.C. I try to go into the city whenever I get a chance but unfortunately sometimes outdoor activities are ruined by the cold winter weather... so when it’s a sunnier day you have to take advantage of it! I purchased this maxi skirt with hesitancy. I liked it a lot but I didn’t know if it was too bohemian for my style. Good thing is, regardless of your “style” mixing in pieces that add something different to your wardrobe is a good thing. I love chambray and fur and so I paired the maxi skirt with those and added some boots and waala! And the best part, I got a ton of compliments which boosted my style confidence so now I’m wondering what other out of the ordinary pieces I want to purchase!

I love this time of year. I love the crisp, cool weather. I love the twinkling lights and smell of evergreen in the air. And I LOVE holiday parties.

SCENE: The Work Party A few rules for the Work Party: 1. Be appropriate—as in, there should NOT be a whole lot of skin showing. If your outfit would make your 90-year-old grandmother or your 3-year-old niece cringe, then it’s not going to fly at your work party (or your significant other’s work party). So yeah, just say no to lowcut shirts and super short skirts. 2. eel confident. There is nothing worse than walking into a party and totally feeling out of place or uncomfortable. Wear something that is COMFORTABLE, while also making you feel like a rockstar. 3. Be a little different. Most people, when planning for their work holiday party, will either wear A) a suit of some kind or B) a red dress. So I say, BE DIFFERENT! Who says you can’t wear a navy and purple patterned dress with some purple tights to a holiday party? No one! So put that dress on and be different!

You can, in fact, wear shoes that are a different color from your tights. Also, yes, you can wear open toed shoes with tights. Put a pop of color into your outfit with a fun red shoe. What says holiday party better than some red pumps?! 3. Again, layers. Throw a blazer on over that sequin piece for some structure and even a hint of class. So, those are just a few ideas. Unique gifts

by johnna hetrick

I’ve had more weddings than I can count on one hand this year. Each one has been so beautiful and unique, it has been an honor to be a part of each one as a guest, maid of honor, or bridesmaid.

Using their engagement photos (photos shown are courtesy of Katelyn James Photography who photographed Amy and Derek), labels were created for each occasion along with their wedding date.

Finding unique gifts to match the couple’s personality and lifestyle is always the hardest part, until a friend suggested custom wine labels. It was such a fantastic idea and so different. Plus, who doesn’t love wine?!

These make great gifts for all occasions: weddings, christmas, anniversaries, birthdays. Designs are available with your photos, monograms, custom designs, and more!

For one wedding in particular, we had each bridesmaid bring a bottle of wine, and we created labels for different firsts within the marriage: first tradition, first home, honeymoon, first baby, etc. The possibilities are endless. For the groom, we attached cigars as well. 64
