HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior guard Anna Simmers scored a game-high 22 points and sophomore guard Jen Hazlett recorded a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) as the Army women’s basketball team scored its third Patriot League win, 61-54, at Colgate on Wednesday night at Cotterell Court. Army (9-10, 3-1 Patriot League) won for the third time in four games and notched their third conference victory. Colgate (4-15, 1-3) lost its second game in a row. The Black Knights turned a 29-27 halftime lead into a 43-33 cushion, the Black Knights’ largest lead of the game, eight minutes into the second half. Army scored its final field goal of the game with 6:15 to play in the contest, but scored its final six points from the free throw line to seal the victory. “I was really pleased with our effort in the second half,” said head coach Dave Magarity. “Colgate has some of the best guard play in the Patriot League, and this was a quality win for us.” Army shot 33 percent (21-of-63) for the game and hit six three-point baskets to Colgate’s three. The Raiders shot 18-of-61 (30 percent) from the field. Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Jhazmine Lynch led Colgate with 15 points. Although Simmers and Hazlett did the bulk of the scoring, six other players also found the rim. Junior guards Liz Benedict and Molly Yardley chipped in with eight and six points, respectively. Army out-rebounded Colgate 45-44. The Black Knights got out to a strong start, scoring the first six points of the game. The Raiders rallied and notched 11 of the next 16 points to level, 11-11, the score for the first of four ties on the night. Simmers drained back-to-back three-point baskets during an 11-5 Army run as the Black Knights went ahead 22-16 with 6:03 to play in the first half. Army led by as many as seven points twice over the final minutes of the first half, but the Raiders recorded the final five points of the stanza and made it a 29-27 Black Knight lead at the half. The teams traded baskets to start the second half and each held a lead over the first three minutes. A pair of free throws from freshman forward Olivia Schretzman with 17:38 to play broke a 31-31 tie and gave the Black Knights the lead for good. Schretzman’s second free throw ignited a 12-2 Army run over the next five minutes to take its largest lead of the night, 43-33, with 12:24 on the clock. While the Black Knights continued to hold on to the lead, Colgate stayed on their heels until the final minutes. Colgate’s Tricia Oakes’ layup with 10:20 to go pulled the Raiders within 43-40, but Hazlett went on to score Army’s next eight points in order to maintain the lead. Colgate showed no quit down the stretch, inching within 55-53 with 1:41 to play. While Army did not score a field goal over the final six minutes, the Black Knights used six good free throws over the final two minutes to secure the victory. Game Notes: Army’s starting lineup remained the same for the third game in a row and featured Meagan Doucette, Liz Benedict, Jen Hazlett, Anna Simmers and Olivia Schretzman ... Army committed 11 turnovers to Colgate’s 16 miscues ... the Black Knights doubled-up Colgate, 8-4, in the steal column ... freshman guard Krishawn Tillett entered logged minutes for the second game in a row ... both teams totaled nine assists.

WEST POINT, N.Y. - American senior Lisa Strack buried two free throws with 0.9 seconds on the clock as the Eagles engineered 40-39 comeback win over Army in Patriot League women’s basketball action at Christl Arena. The league-leading Eagles remained undefeated in conference play, while the Black Knights fell to 3-2. Junior guard Anna Simmers scored Army’s final six points of the game and finished with a game-high 15 points. Simmers’ final layup with 3:18 to play would be the Black Knights’ final bucket of the afternoon. Army benefited from a pair of timely defensive stops, but could not add any insurance points on the offensive end down the stretch. Army (9-11, 3-2 Patriot League) held American (13-6, 5-0) without a field goal over the final 5:57, but Strack’s free throws proved to be the difference. Simmers and sophomore guard Jen Hazlett both missed shots over the final 47 seconds, allowing American to sprint the length of the court with 10 seconds on the clock in search of the game-winner. After a scramble in the post, officials whistled Army for a foul and sent Strack to the charity stripe for two shots. The Patriot League’s third-leading free throw shooter coming into the game, Strack hit both shots around an Army timeout. The Black Knights had 0.9 seconds left to work with, while both teams burned timeouts before the inbounds. Sophomore forward Jessica Waggoner threw the ball the length of the court, but the cherry picker did not find an open Army player as the buzzer sounded. Army lost its second Patriot League game in the final seconds, as the Black Knights fell to Navy, 58-56, on the road Jan. 14. The story of Army’s season thus far, head coach Dave Magarity’s club has played in 10 games decided by three points or less and is 3-7 in those contests. Simmers and Strack (12 points) were the only players to reach double-figures in scoring for either team. Junior point guard Liz Benedict tallied seven points, while Waggoner totaled six. Simmers and freshman forward Olivia Schretzman added seven rebounds apiece to lead Army. Both teams finished with 33 boards. Army shot 39 percent (17-of-44) from the field, while holding the Eagles to 30 percent (17-of-56). One of the Patriot League’s top three-point shooting teams, American finished 2-of-16 from long range. American scored the first four points of the game before senior co-captain Meagan Doucette’s baseline three-pointer got the Black Knights on the board at 18:26. Schretzman followed with a layup at 18:01, giving Army its first lead of the game, 5-4. Game Notes: Army’s starting lineup remained the same for the fourth game in a row and featured Meagan Doucette, Liz Benedict, Jen Hazlett, Anna Simmers and Olivia Schretzman ... Simmers stretched her double-digit scoring streak to seven games ... she is averaging 19.6 points per game against Patriot League opponents ... Army is 6-4 at home this season ... former All-Patriot League performers Erin Anthony (West Point ‘11) and Liz Leer (American ‘11) reunited as both players have remained a part of their programs’ coaching staffs ... Anthony is serving as Army’s athletic intern until the end of the month.

WORCESTER, Mass. - Army erased a double-digit deficit over the final six minutes of the game and held Holy Cross without a field goal over the final seven minutes only to fall short in a 62-59 battle for third place in Patriot League women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at the Hart Center. The Crusaders scored their final seven points of the game from the free throw line, including a crucial pair with 10.6 seconds to go to put the game out of the Black Knights’ reach. Sophomore guard Jen Hazlett paced Army with 18 points, including 14 in the second half to lead Army’s comeback charge. Junior guards Anna Simmers and Molly Yardley followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Army fell to 9-12 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Holy Cross (13-8, 4-2 Patriot League) sophomore guard Alex Smith led all players with 26 points, including five three-point baskets, as the Crusaders extended their win streak to four games. Smith’s single free throw with 5:24 to play in the contest put Holy Cross on top, 58-49. The Black Knights mounted their comeback from here, scoring 10 of the final 14 points of the game only to fall short of completing the mission. Army’s three Patriot League losses have come by a combined six points. Trailing 60-55 with just over a minute to play, Hazlett’s baseline three-pointer was right on the money and made it a one-possession game with exactly 1:00 on the clock. The Crusaders could not find the rim on their next trip down the floor and drained nearly the entire shot clock in the process. Army regained possession with 28 seconds left and got the ball in Hazlett’s hot hand behind the arc. The attempt was off the mark and led to Holy Cross’ Christine Ganser drilling two free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the victory. Army shot 37 percent (23-of-62) for the game and out-rebounded Holy Cross, 36-26. Army grabbed 18 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds on the night. Senior co-captain Meagan Doucette grabbed a career-high nine boards to lead all players. Eight of her caroms came off the offensive glass, as Army scored 13 second-chance points. Holy Cross scored the first five points of the game before the Black Knights got on the board. The Crusaders built a sizable 14-6 lead before the Army offense got in gear. The Black Knights scored the next nine points unanswered, a run that began with a Benedict triple from the left wing with 12:02 on the clock. Consecutive Olivia Schretzman buckets capped the 9-0 Army run and gave Army its first lead of the night, 16-15, with 9:39 to go in the first half. While the Crusaders heated back up on the offensive end, Army endured just over a five-minute (6:17-1:19) scoring drought. The dry spell helped Holy Cross to a 35-21 lead, its largest of the first half, with 1:43 on the clock. Army scored the final six points of the first half thanks to buckets from Schretzman, Hazlett and Simmers. The timely surge trimmed the deficit to single digits, 35-27, at the half. Momentum continued to swing in Army’s favor in the opening moments of the second half. The Black Knights pulled within six points twice in the first four minutes (37-31, 39-33), but the Crusaders wasted no time once again making it a doubledigit deficit and led 46-33 at a timeout with 13:17 to play in the game. Hazlett drilled back-to-back three-point buckets to Black Knights within striking distance. Hazlett’s second triple at the 13:08 mark pulled Army within 46-39, but the Crusaders responded with a 9-3 run over the next 5:39 to go back on top 55-42 with 7:29 left in the contest. That marked Holy Cross’ largest lead of the second half. Army continued to chip away at the deficit, but the free throw line allowed Holy Cross to keep its distance down the stretch. Hazlett nailed her third three-ball of the game from the left baseline (3:51), while Schretzman’s layup made it 58-55 Crusaders as Army executed its out-of-bounds play with 2:14 on the clock. Hazlett’s range came through again with a minute to go, but Holy Cross thwarted the comeback in the final seconds. Ganser’s free throws made it 62-57 in the Crusaders’ favor, while Doucette’s putback with a second on the clock provided the final score. Game Notes: Army’s starting lineup included Meagan Doucette, Liz Benedict, Jen Hazlett, Kait Goodall and Olivia Schretzman ... Holy Cross has won three of its last four meetings against Army ... the Black Knights lost their first Wednesday game of the season (previously 5-0).
