RAISING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS 2010

The Army women’s basketball team falls in line with the rest of West Point’s varsity teams when it comes to visibility in the community. The Black Knights take great pride in reaching out to local youth groups and serving as role models for children in the Hudson Valley and beyond.

Over the past three years, the Army women’s basketball team has spent time at the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson camp as well as Black Knights Alley, a family fun zone prior to every home Army football game. The team was on hand to shoot baskets, along with signing autographs and camouflage face painting. The staff and players conduct free youth and coaches clinics regularly as well. Please check www.goARMYsports.com for schedules. Many of the players are active within the Special Olympics and Wounded Warriors programs throughout the year. Army, which also takes part in recognizing National Girls and Women in Sports Day on an annual basis, remains an active participant in the WBCA’s Play 4Kay, formerly known as Pink Zone, to raise breast cancer awareness, while also celebrating National Girls and Women In Sports Day annually. To date, Pink Zone/Play 4Kay has raised more than $7,000,000 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund®. The 2013 Play 4Kay will be held across the country, Feb. 8-18.

Army’s cadet-athletes have a uniqueness about them, which makes them ideal role models for today’s youth. The women’s basketball team is second-to-none when it comes to community outreach and that trend will certainly continue throughout the 2012-13 season.
