Class Notes Sue Cumnock Williams (HEPE ’68) is retired from the University of California at Davis faculty. She spent nearly four decades with the institution as a coach, physical education instructor and physical education program director. Sue coached more than 80 All-Americans in 29 seasons as the women’s cross country coach and 14 seasons as the men’s cross country coach at UC Davis. She was named NCAA women’s cross country coach of the decade for the 1980s and she received the James H. Meyer Distinguished Achievement Award from the UC Davis Academic Federation in 2003.

1970s Travis Beard (MUED ’70 & M.Ed. MUS ’77) will be enshrined in the Phi Beta Mu Arkansas Omicron Chapter Hall of Fame in recognition of his career in music education in 2012. Travis taught music and directed bands in the Russellville School District from 1974-2009. Dr. Kay Woodiel (HEPE ’73) was promoted to full professor at Eastern Michigan University in the School of Health Promotion and Human Performance.

Michael Bullard (MUED ’75) was named 2011-12 Vance County (N.C.) principal of the year by a panel consisting of current and retired educators in the area and a member of the Vance County Board of Education. Michael has served as principal of the Vance County Early College High School since its establishment four years ago.

1990s Laura Ahlert Davis (BUAD ’90) has started a new career as an agent with ERA Henley Real Estate in Conway. She and her husband, Walt Davis (FISH/ WLDLF ’90), have three sons: Ty (18), Ethan (16) and Evan (13). Walt is vice president of operations for Hank’s Furniture. They live in Greenbrier. Daniel Spencer (HEPE ’90) graduated with honors from Arkansas State University in July with a Master of Education degree in educational leadership in administration. Daniel is head football coach for Cabot Junior High School North. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two children: Leyton (9) and Kaitlyn Aubrey (5). Mary Alice Hughes (HEPE ’91) has become co-owner of Insurance Advantage in Jacksonville. Mary Alice has 17 years of experience in the insurance industry. Her agency specializes in Medicare products, long-term care, health insurance, life insurance and tax-deferred annuities. Sam Belcher (ENGR ’92) was named senior vice president of operations for the Constellation Energy Nuclear Group (CENG) fleet based in Baltimore, Md. Sam previously served as vice president for CENG at its Nine Mile Point facility in Scriba, N.Y. Terri Rowe Burnette (BIOL ’97) joined St. Edward Mercy in Fort Smith as a business development specialist. Terri has worked in the healthcare industry for the past 14 years.

1980s Col. Michael D. Merritt (BIOL ’84) graduated from the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., this year. Michael serves as post commander at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. Jeananne Cooper Hawking (JOUR ’85) was chosen to serve as a director on the 2011-12 Sales and Marketing Executives International Board. Jeananne is director of sales for the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock. Vicki Schneider (JOUR ’88) was named North Logan County Chamber of Commerce educator of the year during the chamber’s banquet in February. Vicki has taught English and journalism at Paris High School for 23 years. She also covers sports and school events for the Paris Express newspaper and she is owner of Schneider Photography in Paris.

Douglas Sanders (HEPE ’98) was hired as assistant principal for grades K-8 and dean of students for grades 9-12 in the Danville School District. Angela English Hunsucker (CRWR/ENGL ’99) and her husband, Todd, own the Waldron Area Chamber of Commerce business of the year — Alliance Propane and Petro. They have one daughter: Justi (3). Adam Robison (SPH ‘99 & M.Ed. EDU LDRSHP ‘07) was named director of the Arkansas Tech Professional Development Institute.

2000s Dave Pinson (HIST/POL SCI ’02 & M.S. ’04) was hired by Trinity Multifamily as its regional director for Northwest Arkansas and Oklahoma. He oversees dayto-day operations, supervises community directors and directs marketing efforts.
