New Mission, Vision Statements Shape Our Direction Arkansas Tech University engaged in a thorough and highly collaborative strategic planning process during the 2015-16 academic year. Input from faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members was critical in developing an actionable plan that would engage and benefit all stakeholder groups. The first outcome of the process was a written plan that will guide the university over the course of the next five years. It was approved by the Arkansas Tech University Board of Trustees on May 19, 2016. You may read the full strategic plan at www.atu.edu/strategicplanning. As a next step in the continuous process of self-evaluation and improvement, the university went to our trustees in August 2016 and asked them to draft a new mission statement and a new vision statement for Arkansas Tech University. Once the statements were drafted, members of the university community were provided with an opportunity to give feedback. On Oct. 19, 2016, the Arkansas Tech University Board of Trustees reviewed and approved the following new mission and vision statements: Mission Statement Arkansas Tech University is dedicated to student success, access, and excellence as a responsive campus community providing opportunities for progressive intellectual development and civic engagement. Embracing and expanding upon its technological traditions, Tech inspires and empowers members of

the community to achieve their goals while striving for the betterment of Arkansas, the nation, and the world. Vision Statement Arkansas Tech University: where students succeed, innovation thrives, and communities flourish. With our strategic plan, mission statement and vision statement in place, Arkansas Tech University has defined how we will continue our more than century-long tradition of providing for the educational needs of our constituents. We have also identified ways in which we must evolve in order to meet those needs. HOMECOMING 2016 Homecoming Saturday 2016 at Arkansas Tech University featured two swarms of humanity that left those in green and gold with smiles on their faces. The first took place as soon as the name Emily Shain echoed over the public address system at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field. A senior from Paragould, Shain was head drum major for the Arkansas Tech marching band, known far and wide as “Arkansas’ Band of Distinction,” during the 2016 football season. She was also elected to the 2016 Homecoming court, and when she was announced as Homecoming queen during a halftime ceremony, her fellow band members abandoned their positions on the field to join their leader for a group hug that clearly demonstrated what Shain meant to them. Less than two hours later, the Wonder Boys football team was clinging to a six-point lead in the final minute of its Homecoming match-up with Northwestern Oklahoma State University. This time the swarm was led by a pair of Arkansas Tech senior defensive linemen — Demetris Ford and Bruce Livingston. Ford sacked NWOSU quarterback Reid Miller, forcing a fumble that Livingston recovered to ensure a 41-35 victory for Arkansas Tech. The Wonder Boys went on to complete their 2016 schedule with a 6-5 overall record, giving them back-to-back winning seasons. |

HOMECOMING GOLF CLASSIC 2016 The team of Alyssia Barton, Mary Gunter and Abby Davis fired a 15-under par round of 57 to win the championship flight in the 2016 Arkansas Tech University Homecoming Golf Classic at Chamberlyne Country Club in Danville on Friday, Oct. 28. The winning team started on No. 18 and began its round with three consecutive birdies. Following a stretch of five straight pars, the Barton/ Gunter/Davis team played its final 10 holes in 12-under par. Included in the strong finish were eight birdies and eagles on No. 9 and No. 14. Brad Spikes/Nelson Ennis/Dan Lovelady finished second in the championship flight with a round of 59. Tommy Hindsman/Woody Jones/Billy Newton shot 58 to capture first place in the senior flight. Barton won the most accurate drive prize for her tee shot on No. 1. Bob Ratchford won the closest to the pin competition on No. 5. A total of 32 three-person teams participated in the 2016 Homecoming Golf Classic. The annual event provides funds for the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association Scholarship. |

Five Honored by African American Alumni Chapter The Arkansas Tech University African American Alumni Chapter honored five individuals during the 2016 Col. George T. Hudgens Evening of Excellence at Lake Point Conference Center on Saturday, Oct. 29. Malik Oliver received the Outstanding Black Young Alumnus award. An Arkansas Tech junior from Russellville, Oliver is majoring in hospitality administration with an emphasis in event management and tourism. He serves as president of United Voices of Praise and historian for the Nu Alpha chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Dr. Patricia Parker earned the Outstanding Black Alumna award. Williamson was the first African American to serve on the Russellville City Council and to serve as mayor, a position he held from 2006-10. Wright was a four-year letterman for the Arkansas Tech football program and a 2010 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business

Hurst was the second African American graduate of Arkansas Tech. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history education in 1966 and went on to a career that included work as supervisor of psychological services for the Detroit Public Schools system in Michigan. Living a Life With No Regrets, No Limits TECH ALUMNUS CHASES DREAMS, FINDS CAREER WITH DISNEY Defining Steve Fryer requires multiple terms. Arkansas Tech University and Harvard University graduate. Sportsman. Aerobics and game show champion. Son, father and grandfather. Executive director of global guest services for consumer products at the Walt Disney Company. Of all the terms that may be applied to Fryer, perhaps the two that most succinctly and accurately get to the core of who he is are these: Southern and storyteller. “I think helping each other is something that is really part of the Southern heritage,” said Fryer. “Southern hospitality is a real thing, and I carry it with me all my life. I believe we are raised that way. I know I was. As Southerners travel the world, we spread our spirit, our love for life and our love for our fellow man. That’s one of the things that I carry with me from growing up in Russellville, being an Arkansan and graduating from Arkansas Tech.” The college campus in Russellville was the playground of Fryer’s youth. He grew up a block-and-a-half from Arkansas Tech, learned to play tennis on the court adjacent to Caraway Hall, shot baskets in the Stroupe Gymnasium and spent time playing football and running around the track at Buerkle Field. “It was idyllic,” said Fryer. “It was safe, and it was peaceful.” Growing up on North Boston Place also meant that many of Fryer’s neighbors were members of the Arkansas Tech faculty. None made a greater impact on young Steve Fryer than Dr. Lillian Massie, who taught English at Tech from 1933-68 and was inducted into the Arkansas Tech Hall of Distinction in 1987. “To this day, I trace my love for literature to Dr. Massie because as a small child I would go to her house and she would share these stories with me,” said Fryer. “She really encouraged me.” There was never any question as to where Fryer would attend college following his graduation from Russellville High School. There was, however, considerable doubt as to his major field of study until one fateful meeting of Joyce Dempsey’s freshman English class. Fryer had just completed and submitted his first essay of the semester when Dempsey asked him to stay after class one day. She asked him if he had declared a major, and when he replied that he was undeclared and thinking about English, Dempsey employed some persuasive mentoring.

“She put me in a headlock and off we went to the English department offices,” said Fryer. “From that moment on, I was an English major. She told me this was the kind of background that would be so valuable for me in whatever I did, and she was right. It was that personal touch that the professors here offered that meant so much to me.” Fryer earned four letters in tennis and was active in Greek life, student government and choir during his time as an undergraduate student at Tech. He was named the most outstanding senior male student at Arkansas Tech in 1978. Upon completion of his baccalaureate degree, Fryer returned to Russellville High School and taught English for four years while also coaching the tennis team. He recalls that he loved teaching and his students, but he felt a need to grow and expand beyond his comfort zone. “Comfortable is an important word in my life,” said Fryer. “When I get comfortable, I know it’s time to make a change. I don’t think we should ever get comfortable. When you are uncomfortable, that’s when you’re growing. If you are comfortable, you’re stagnant…and if you’re stagnant, then it’s time to die.” Soon after, Fryer found himself in the living room of another lifelong mentor from Arkansas Tech, Alfred J. Crabaugh. Known as the father of the modern intellectual tradition at Arkansas Tech, Crabaugh served on the faculty and in the administration at Tech from 1929-69. A 1968 inductee into the Arkansas Tech Hall of Distinction, Crabaugh was the only person in the history of the institution to hold the title academic dean. “I sat down with Dean Crabaugh, and I told him I had this really crazy idea I’d like to talk to him about,” said Fryer. “I told him I loved teaching, but I was ready for some challenges and to push myself. I was thinking about applying to Harvard Law School. “Dean Crabaugh did not miss a beat,” continued Fryer. “He looked me straight in the eyes and told me, ‘Okay, now tell me about your crazy idea.’ He said he didn’t think that was crazy at all, that he was excited about it, that he and (his wife) Marge would do anything they could to help and so would everyone else at Tech.” Following considerable assistance from members of the Arkansas Tech faculty and staff in the forms of letters or recommendation and other documentation, Fryer was accepted to Harvard Law School. Fryer and his young family arrived in Boston a month before the start of the fall term to begin acclimating themselves to the area. During a trip on the subway to attend a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park, Fryer overheard a recent Harvard graduate lamenting the fact that he was about to begin his post-graduate studies somewhere other than Harvard Law School.

“I didn’t get in because apparently they saved my spot for some moron from Mud Puddle, Mississippi,” said the young man on the subway. Fryer knew he was the subject of the Harvard graduate’s disdain. “If you are from Mud Puddle, Mississippi, be proud of it,” said Fryer. “You are just as prepared and just as capable as anyone else. Harvard changed my life. It was 450 people exactly like me, which on one hand was nice because I didn’t know there were other people like me. Sometimes I felt out of place. I fit in there, but I realized quickly I would have to work really hard to compete there.” Fryer’s raising as an athlete meant the competitive aspect of Harvard Law School was no problem, but as he prepared to earn his Juris Doctor it became clear to him that there were certain aspects of the law profession that did not match his personality. “It can be a ruthless, life or death kind of situation,” said Fryer. Between his second and third year of law school, Fryer served as a law clerk at Rose Law Firm in Little Rock. It was there that Hillary Clinton helped him find the direction for the next phase of his life. “She sat me down at the end of my clerkship and asked me what I really wanted to do,” said Fryer. “I told her that I thought I was supposed to come back to Arkansas and be a lawyer. She goes, ‘Why? You hate it.’ She was right. She was absolutely right. She explained to me that a Harvard law degree does not mean that you have to be a lawyer. So, she asked me if I’d ever been to southern California before. I said no, and she said we were going to find me a job in southern California because every career that exists in the

world exists there. She told me that something would cross my path, and when it did, go for it.” From there, everything began to fall into place for Fryer. He earned his degree from Harvard Law in 1986 and accepted a position in Los Angeles managing the legal affairs of the Transit Casualty Company receivership, the largest commercial insurance bankruptcy in history. In his free time, he became an aerobics instructor and a participant in aerobics competitions. Fryer earned the bronze medal in mixed pairs at the 1991 United States National Aerobics Championship. “What I learned running that aerobics studio was customer service,” said Fryer. “Customer service is one of the great differentiators in any type of retail.” A friend Fryer met through aerobics said he had the perfect personality to appear on a game show, so he auditioned for “Sale of the Century.” Within 72 hours, Fryer was on his way to becoming an eight-day champion on that show, a four-day champion on “Super Password Plus” and a five-day champion on “Dick Clark’s The Challengers.” Fryer’s success on those programs allowed him to make connections at Goodson-Todman Productions, and he was invited to play new game shows as they were under development and presented to network executives, particularly executives from ABC television. “I met a lot of ABC executives, and they were nice people,” said Fryer. “So now I had friends at ABC.” Soon, those friends were calling with an offer for Fryer to become a publicist for ABC. “If I hadn’t played those game shows, it never would have happened,” said Fryer. “That’s what you have to do. Find something that is interesting and then go see what it is all about. You have to do that, because in the end, it all comes together.” Fryer had only been at ABC for a short time when it was purchased by the Walt Disney Company. “I had always been a Disney fanatic,” said Fryer. “I loved the Walt Disney Company and everything about Disney, so I was very excited. But a few weeks later I heard my boss was being transferred from ABC television to Walt Disney television, and that he was going to get to take one publicist with him. He came to me and said I was the one who loved Disney and I was the one with the Disney personality.” Fryer’s first assignment at the Walt Disney Company was to work on the re-launch of the Wonderful World of Disney for ABC television. His responsibility was to create and disseminate the press kits for all the movies and programming associated with the series.

“I had grown up watching that show with my family on Sunday nights,” said Fryer. “I knew how important it was for families to have that kind of television, so I was all in.”

Fryer came home to Arkansas Tech in October. It was his first visit to campus in 30 years, and while he marveled at the growth and new facilities, he was equally impressed by aspects of the university that had not changed.

His success in that endeavor led to a three-month assignment to work on publicity for a new project called Disney Online. “As I was getting close to the end of my three months, a woman, one of my all-time mentors, Margaret Cook, came up to me and told me she’d been watching me,” said Fryer. “She said that Disney was starting something called e-commerce that would allow us to sell Disney products online. She told me I was going to lead guest services for e-commerce. I said I was flattered, but I had no idea what e-commerce was, so I’m probably not the right choice.”

“What’s really exciting to see is that what made Tech special in the 1970s still makes it special today,” said Fryer. “The student-toteacher ratio is still 20-to-1, and you don’t find that in many places. I think that is what is really key here at Tech. It was key for me. I knew my professors, and they knew me. I wasn’t a number to them. I was Steve. I was that crazy kid who asked all those questions. Getting to have that close, pedagogical relationship with your professors that you receive with that kind of ratio is so important.”

Cook gave Fryer the job anyway, and he soon realized that she was right. “After the first week it was like a sweater that I had always loved because it just fit,” said Fryer. He has remained in guest services ever since, and for more than a decade he has led guest services for Disney consumer products. “I take care of the Disney guests, in particular with Disney consumer products,” said Fryer. “We do a little bit with the parks in terms of dining reservations for Walt Disney World, but it’s particularly Disney Stores, disneystore.com or Disney products you purchase at a non-Disney retailer, be that JCPenney, Walmart, Target or wherever. While he was on campus, Fryer spoke to an overflow crowd in the Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center as part of the Norman Lecture Series. The title of his lecture was “Your Life Journey: No Limits, No Regrets.” “They can do anything they want to, and Arkansas Tech is preparing them to do anything they want to,” said Fryer when asked what he hoped Tech students took away from his remarks. “As you get on in your life and you look back, your regrets will always be about those things that you didn’t take the time to try. “If something grabs your attention, it does it for a reason,” continued Fryer. “It’s touching something inside of you. Explore it. I explored aerobics, I explored game shows, I explored Harvard…everything that caught my attention, I went for it. Go for it. Think big. Dream big. Because if you don’t dream big, big doesn’t happen.” |

More than 116,000 AT&T employees have utilized the You Achieve system since it went live. The associated website has received more than 90 million hits. Garrett points to his academic advisor, Miranda Senn, and his instructors, including Annette Stuckey, as key factors in allowing him to successfully complete the BPS program. “I really thank Ms. Stuckey a lot for helping me with my capstone project,” said Garrett. “I knew how to run projects, but she really gave me a structure. As big as this program was, being able to break it down into those steps is what made it successful.” With his degree in hand and a brighter future in front of him,

Garrett has a simple message for individuals thinking about going back to school to complete their degree. “I challenge you to enroll in one class,” said Garrett. “That is the hardest part in going back to school. Once you register, then you are in and you want to try two classes. Never give up. Register for one class. This online program is a life changer.” |

Alumna Comes Full Circle, Gives Back to Arkansas Tech As Adena Strickland White arrived at Arkansas Tech University’s Baswell Techionery to serve as guest speaker for a meeting of public relations students on Oct. 17, she couldn’t help but think back to when she was on the other side of the table. “I always enjoyed having speakers come to the classroom and talk to us,” said White, a 2007 graduate of Tech. “Some of the people I am in (Public Relations Society of America) with now, I can remember them coming to campus. It makes a difference when you hear from someone in the workforce, so it’s neat seeing myself as that person now, especially at the school I attended. It

makes me proud to see the students coming up and where the (Public Relations Student Society of America) organization is going.” White, director of communications for the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce, was invited to speak to the Tech chapter of PRSSA by one of her Tech mentors, Dr. Hanna Norton. Another female role model first introduced White to the idea of public relations as a career option. Growing up in Center Ridge, Ark., White admired the character Carrie Brady Roberts Reed from the soap opera “Days of Our Lives” and the work she did as director of public affairs at University Hospital.

Once White connected that idea with reality, she knew it was the right career path. “I didn’t know exactly what P.R. was, but once I got to Tech I figured out that it was heavy in writing and other skills that I was good at,” said White. “I liked the idea of changing people’s attitudes toward something, especially a good cause.” White is a former member of the Arkansas Tech Young Alumni Advisory Board and a current member of the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors. Her husband, Greenbrier School District teacher Matt White, has also served on the alumni board.

“I like the growth that Tech has had in recent years, and it feels like the campus is always changing,” said White. “It’s becoming more well-known. I feel proud that we have the first female president of a public, four-year university in Arkansas. Tech is becoming more diverse. When I see them focusing on diversity, it changes the way people view Tech.” | VOL. 52, NO. 3 Alumni News

Sutton Donation Makes Piano Refurbishment Possible Arkansas Tech University alumna Janice Hinkle Sutton is modest when it comes to her musical talents on piano. “I’m not an accomplished player, but I love piano,” said Sutton. It’s a love that started with her first lessons at the age of five, continued through her days as an Arkansas Tech student and has persisted through more than four decades playing piano at First Baptist Church in Mountain View. Sutton has further demonstrated that love by contributing toward the restoration of a 1902 Steinway and Sons C model piano that has a long and colorful history on the Arkansas Tech University campus. The piano was first purchased by the institution in 1940, and one year later it was placed in the lobby of Caraway Residence Hall. There, it was witness to and part of countless gatherings of the Tech community over multiple generations.

After more than seven decades of service, the piano was in need of expert attention. Sutton’s gift made that possible, and now the refurbished instrument has been relocated to Witherspoon Hall so that Arkansas Tech music faculty and students can enjoy it as part of their studies. “I knew this would take a piano lover to do it,” said Sutton, who sang in Dr. John Wainright’s choir at Tech and graduated with a degree in home economics and business. “It’s just beautiful.” Dr. Tim Smith, associate professor of music, had the pleasure of playing the piano for Sutton when she came to see the restored instrument on Oct. 17. “Having grown up on a $75 piano, and then going to school and playing the typical practice pianos, it is a treat to be able to come into studio and play a piano like this,” said Smith. “I suspect it will have a big impact on students.” |

Bartlett Keynote Speaker at College to Career Conference David Bartlett, Arkansas Tech University alumnus and retired leader in the Arkansas banking industry, was the keynote speaker at the 2016 College to Career Conference hosted by the Arkansas Tech College of Business on Thursday, Nov. 10. Bartlett graduated from Arkansas Tech in 1977 with an accounting degree and began his banking career in 1979 in Texas. Over the course of a dozen years working in banks at Dallas, Plano, Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Bartlett often found himself working alongside graduates from some of the largest universities in Texas. “I quickly realized that I had gained the same knowledge that they did and that I could compete with them,” said Bartlett during his remarks at the College to Career Conference. A native of Fort Smith who was raised in Russellville, Bartlett returned to his home state in 1991 as president and chief executive officer of Worthen National Bank in Hot Springs. Six years later, he and a group of local investors founded Alliance Bank of Hot Springs.

When Alliance Bank merged with Simmons First National Corporation in 2003, Bartlett became chairman of Simmons First Bank of Hot Springs. He was later promoted to president and chief operating officer of Simmons First National Corporation in 2006 and chief banking officer for the organization in 2013. Bartlett retired from Simmons First National Corporation on Jan. 15, 2016. During his remarks at the College to Career Conference, Bartlett spoke to faculty and students from the Arkansas Tech College of Business about career opportunities in banking and associated

regulatory agencies as well as trends in the banking industry. Bartlett pointed to three factors that contributed greatly to his career: surrounding himself with good people (family and business associates), full utilization of his educational opportunities and a willingness to sacrifice personal time for work. In addition to Bartlett, 16 Arkansas Tech alumni gave their time earlier in the day at the College to Career Conference to serve as panelists during sessions specific to the major fields of accounting, business data analytics, economics and finance and management and marketing. Arkansas Tech University Partners with LULAC to Create Opportunities for Hispanic American Students Dr. Robin E. Bowen, president of Arkansas Tech University, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) that seeks to create more educational opportunities for Hispanic Americans. The terms of the MOU state that Arkansas Tech will match funding in the form of a tuition waiver (50 percent Arkansas Tech and 50 percent LULAC) to award up to five academic scholarships per year, not to exceed tuition and fees at the university, to eligible Latino students or students involved in Latino community affairs and service. FRIENDS WE’LL MISS Janice Gardner Anderson (’40) died on Oct. 15, 2016. Janice lived in Thief River Falls, Minn. She was 96. George M. Bradford (’40) died on March 20, 2016. George served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He retired from Exxon Oil Company following 34 years in distribution. George lived in Fort Smith. He was 96. Carl Franklin Baswell (ENGR ‘42) died on Nov. 20, 2016. Carl served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the service in 1969 at the rank of Colonel. Carl’s civilian career included work as director of international operations for KLEE KG, a German international construction and service firm, from 1974-92. He remained an active engineering and business consultant for many years beyond his retirement. Carl’s generous financial support of Arkansas Tech has included funds for scholarships and a gift during the Return to Glory campaign. Baswell Residence Hall was dedicated in his honor in 2007 and Baswell Techionery was dedicated in his honor in 2011. On May 16, 2009, he became the 100th individual inducted into the Arkansas Tech Hall of Distinction under the Distinguished Alumnus category. Carl lived in Heber Springs. He was 94. Joe G. Fraser (’42) died on Feb. 28, 2016. Joe served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked as a banker, furniture store manager and U.S. Postal Service employee. He served on the Clinton School District Board of Education for 14 years and the Clinton Water and Sewer Commission for eight years. Joe lived in Clinton. He was 92. Minta Del McDuff (’42) died on Aug. 25, 2016. She worked for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for several years. Minta lived in Hurst, Texas. She was 93. W.D. “Dub” Page (AGRI ’42) died on Aug. 28, 2016. Dub was a naval aviator in the Pacific during World War II. He was employed by the American Plywood Association for 33 years and was a pastor and youth pastor for churches in Cedar Lake, Ind., and Tacoma, Wash. Dub lived in Tacoma, Wash. He was 93. James Ardith Campbell (’47) died on Jan. 20, 2016. James lived in Harrison. He was 85. Virginia Ann Murray Hille (’48) died on April 21, 2016. She was retired from a career teaching middle school science in Texas and Colorado. Ann lived in Rock Hill, S.C. She was 87. Elizabeth Parker “Peanut” Mobley (AS ’48) died on July 31, 2016. She was selected to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges,” was president of the Women’s Federation and Parker Hall and served as a cheerleader during her time at Arkansas Tech. Jane lived in Little Rock. She was 88. Dorothy Jean Smith Tillman (AS ’48) died on Aug. 22, 2016. Dorothy worked for E.L. Dalton and Co. in Dallas, Texas, for more than 40 years and was a member of the company’s board at the time of her retirement. Dorothy lived in Richardson, Texas. She was 88. Ralph Eugene Blythe (’50) died on Oct. 1, 2016. He served in the Army National Guard and was a member of the Elm Springs City Council for 12 years. Ralph lived in Springdale. He was 86. Kenneth H. McCain (BUAD ’50) died on Aug. 7, 2016. After working for Swift and Company in Oklahoma, Goodyear Tire in Arkansas and as a real estate salesman, Kenneth founded McCain Construction Company in Fort Smith. Today, the family-owned business provides solutions for residential, commercial and industrial basement and foundation problems. Kenneth lived in Fort Smith. He was 88. Leslie “Gene” Eugene Hall (HPE ’51) died on Nov. 7, 2016. Gene played football at Arkansas Tech. He served in the Arkansas Army National Guard. He coached football and basketball at Mountain Home High School, Conway High School and Little Rock Central High School. After retiring from coaching in 1970, he worked as a team sales specialist at Spaulding Athletic Company in Little Rock. Gene lived in Little Rock. He was 87. Don Floyd (HPE ’53) died on Sept. 26, 2016. Don served in Korea as a member of the U.S. Army. He retired from the National Guard as a captain in 1963. His civilian career included 11 seasons in high school coaching and teaching at Charleston and Stuttgart, work as an assistant football coach, tennis coach, assistant athletic director and athletic director at Arkansas State University and leadership of Sen. Dale Bumpers’ Arkansas office from 1975-91. Don lived in Little Rock. He was 87. Dr. Robert Lowell Casey (MUED ’54 & FMR FACULTY) died on Sept. 19, 2016. He taught and directed bands in the schools at Danville, Hazen, DeQueen and Crossett as well as St. Charles, Mo., before joining the music faculty at Arkansas Tech in 1971. Robert became head of the Department of Music in 1980 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1998. He received the title professor emeritus of music from the Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees in 2002. Robert lived in Russellville. He was 83. Ronald Hudson Cochran (’54) died on Oct. 4, 2016. He served in the U.S. Army for more than 27 years and was a rancher for 33 years. Ronald lived in Milltown. He was 82.

Johnnie Lee Gunnell (BUAD ’54) died on July 19, 2016. His career included work with CIT Credit Corporation, the U.S. Postal Service, DeWitt Shoe Corporation, Sportsman Liquor and the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Johnnie lived in DeWitt. He was 84. Ira “I.E.” Turner Jr. (’54) died on Oct. 21, 2016. I.E. played football at Arkansas Tech and went on to a 30-year career with the North Little Rock Fire Department. He was the department’s chief for 10 years. I.E. lived in North Little Rock. He was 83. Travis Martin Adams (HIST/POL SCI ’55) died on Sept. 4, 2016. Travis was elected to student council as a freshman, student body president as a sophomore and senior class president at Arkansas Tech. He was also a cheerleader, commander of the Military Honor Society, sports editor of the Agricola yearbook, statistician for all men’s athletic teams and president for both the History Club and Blue Key. He was an aerial photographic interpreter in the U.S. Army and worked as assistant director of the education commission for the Southern Baptist Convention before returning to Tech as assistant professor of history and assistant to Dean Alfred J. Crabaugh in 1966. Over the span of 31 years as a member of the Tech faculty and administration, he was assistant academic dean, associate academic dean, associate professor of history, vice president for student affairs and executive assistant to the president. He was inducted into the Arkansas Tech Hall of Distinction in 2000. Travis lived in Russellville. He was 82. Donna Lea Hendrix Blaylock (’56) died on July 9, 2016. She was executive secretary at Arkhola Sand and Gravel in Fort Smith for 33 years. Donna lived in Benton. She was 78. Charles “Buddy” Cagle (’61) died on Nov. 6, 2016. Buddy played football and baseball for the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys. He spent most of his professional career in abstracting and retired from the Pulaski County Treasurer’s Office. Buddy lived in Little Rock. He was 76. Charles John Rusgis Jr. (BUAD ’61) died on Aug. 16, 2016. Chuck played football at Arkansas Tech. He served in the Air National Guard and was a businessman. Chuck lived in Highland Village, Texas. He was 78. Robert J. Beaver (ENGL ’64) died on July 4, 2016. He was retired from a career as a dispatcher in the trucking industry. Robert lived in Palatka, Fla. He was 73. Joe Oliver Green (’64) died on July 20, 2016. He taught in the Valley Springs School District for 20 years and was a founding member of the Valley Springs Fire Department. Joe lived in Valley Springs. He was 74. David R. Bell (MATH ’65) died on Sept. 7, 2016. David owned and operated JC Turf Supplies in Hot Springs. He bred, raised, trained and raced thoroughbred horses. David lived in Hot Springs. He was 73. Foods. He later returned to his hometown of Russellville, where he owned and operated Cowan-Goodwin’s and Mid City Car Wash. Bob lived in Russellville. He was 74. Larry R. Branch (BUAD ’66) died on July 6, 2016. Larry played football at Arkansas Tech and was a member of the Wonder Boys’ 1964 Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championship team. Over the span of his 26-year career in the U.S. Army, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and earned such honors as the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster and National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star. Larry lived in Fairfax, Va. He was 71. Stephen C. Kent (ACCT ’67) died on July 19, 2016. Stephen served as mayor in Atkins for 15 years. He also worked as an accountant for Winrock Farms, owned a construction business, owned a home improvement store and was plant superintendent at the Atkins Pickle Plant until his retirement and its closure. Stephen lived in Atkins. He was 72. Gene Arnold Seay (MATH ’70) died on Aug. 21, 2016. He worked in accounting and information technology at UPS for 28 years. Gene lived in Sherwood. He was 68. Marshall James Thomson (’72) died on Oct. 6, 2016. He served in the U.S. Navy and held positions such as park ranger, lodge manager and superintendent during his career with Arkansas State Parks. Milton Bailey (GEOL ’81, PHYS SCI ’82 & M.Ed. ’88) died on Sept. 29, 2016. Milton served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps for a total of 22 years. His post-military career included work as a secondary and post-secondary teacher in the counties of Pope, Faulkner and Pulaski. Milton lived in Cabot. He was 77.

The History of Arkansas Tech Told in New Book by DeBlack A member of the Arkansas Tech University faculty has authored a history of the institution. Dr. Thomas A. DeBlack, professor of history, has completed a work entitled “A Century Forward: The Centennial History of Arkansas Tech University.” “A Century Forward” will be available for purchase at a cost of $45 per book (plus shipping and handling). The new book tells the story of Arkansas Tech University, beginning with the events that led to its creation as the Second District Agricultural School in 1909 and continuing through its evolution to become Arkansas Polytechnic College in 1925 and Arkansas Tech University in 1976. The ending point of the book coincides with the conclusion of the presidency of Dr. Robert C. Brown in 2014. A member of the Arkansas Tech faculty since 1995, DeBlack is a past president of the Arkansas Historical Association and the Arkansas Association of College History Teachers. DeBlack is also an award-winning author. In 2003, he received the first Butler-Remmel Arkansas History Literary Prize for his book “With Fire and Sword: Arkansas 1861-74.” He co-authored the college-level textbook “Arkansas: A Narrative History,” which was recognized by the Arkansas Library Association with its Arkansiana Prize in 2003. DeBlack’s areas of teaching and research emphasis are Arkansas history, the Old South, the New South and the Civil War and Reconstruction. |

When the new $15.1 million, four-story academic, student support and administrative facility opened in spring 2016, room was allocated on the first floor for yours truly to have an office that would allow me to properly greet campus tours and other visitors. If you’re living life from a Wonder Boy point of view like I am, the décor is perfect. I have a green bed, gold walls and my logo overhead. In addition to future students, the location also provides me with multiple daily opportunities to see faculty, staff and current students as they pass through Brown Hall going about their daily business. As campus ambassador, one of my favorite duties is the chance to brighten the day of the members of the Tech community with which I interact.

Now, there’s one thing you should know about my home. I work what could be described as a limited schedule…maybe two or three half-days per week in the office and then my evening and weekend appointments at Tech events. So, if you want to see me in my office, you’d be well served to call the Office of Admissions at (479) 968-0343 to see if I am in that day. While you’re on the phone or dropping by to see me, you can request more information about Arkansas Tech for a prospective student in your life. All of us who love this university, regardless of whether we have two or four legs, play a role in recruiting the next generation of the Tech family.

NAIA National Championship Basketball Teams Inducted into Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame Arkansas Tech University celebrated two of its greatest athletic achievements on Friday, Sept. 16, when coaches, players and support personnel from the Golden Suns back-to-back NAIA national championship basketball teams were inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony at John E. Golden Suns Named WGCA All-American Scholars The Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) has named Arkansas Tech University’s Caroline Fredensborg and Anna Frandsen All-American Scholars for the 2015-16 season. To be named to the WGCA All-American Scholar list, studentathletes are required to earn at least a 3.5 grade point average. Fredensborg was named to the 2016 All-Great American Conference first team and earned a top-40 finish at the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championships. A 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-American, Fredensborg was also the recipient of the Elite 90 Award, which is given to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average competing in one of the NCAA’s 90 national championships Frandsen earned GAC golfer of the year and GAC freshman of the year accolades in 2016. She was named to the All-GAC first team and earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the GAC Championships. |
