After completing a cancer research project during his freshman year, he has spent three years working on a hypertension project, the subject of his Honors College thesis. The U of A has allowed him to spend time overseas, furthering his deep love of helping other people. After his sophomore year, John worked on an interdisciplinary community development team in Dangriga, Belize. He chose to work on the medical team, which ran a rudimentary indigent clinic, giving basic medical assessments to those who believed they couldn’t access the healthcare system. He spent the summer after his junior year in Cordoba, Argentina, working with a medical mission team. Through his three-month experience in Argentina, he developed a new level of empathy with disadvantaged peoples. John will attend the University of Oklahoma Medical School in the fall. He hopes that with a medical degree and a potential master’s degree in public health, he can bring medical care to more at-risk individuals, both in the United States and abroad.

Weekend football trips to Razorback football games with his parents, both University of Arkansas graduates, inspired William French to choose their alma mater. Now four years later, he plans to take the skills he has acquired to pursue a career in the medical field. His extracurricular activities have taught this Honors College student how to not only be an effective member of a team but also how to be a leader, which are crucial characteristics of any medical professional. In addition, his leadership experiences have instilled the importance of effective and clear communications when running any type of organizations or event. Ultimately, the most important skill he developed from his extracurricular activities is the ability to work with all different types of people. In August 2013, he traveled to Zarzal, Honduras, as a member of the first medical brigade of the U of A Global Brigades chapter. During the trip, the team helped local and foreign physicians provide medical attention to the surrounding community and held educational presentations about basic hygiene. He says this first trip to a developing nation was a very eye-opening experience. In summer 2014, William continued his study abroad travels to Sweden. The subject matter of the course consisted of learning about and making comparisons of healthcare systems in the United States and Sweden.

York, Pennsylvania Parents: Gerald and Karen Kucherich Mentor: Janet Forbess • Team Captain, Swimming and Diving Team • Outreach Coordinator, Razorback Food Recovery • Vice President, Kinesiology Club • Feed Fayetteville Volunteer • Razorback Leadership Academy

• Chancellor’s List • Alpha Zeta Honor Fraternity • Two-Time USA Swimming Olympic Trials Participant • Honorable Mention, Scholar All-American

Julia Kucherich’s love for adventure propelled her from Pennsylvania to the University of Arkansas. She says moving halfway across the country to a place where she knew no one was the best decision she ever made. When choosing a college, Julia wanted to move away from home, get out of her comfort zone and be an accomplished student. She has achieved all three. She knew there was more to life and college than athletics and pursued active involvement in volunteer positions on campus and in the community. The experience that solidified her career aspiration was becoming a founding volunteer and outreach coordinator of Razorback Food Recovery. RFR encompasses both of her interests in serving the community and providing nutrition to the underserved, all while fighting food insecurity. Her involvement with RFR ignited a passion for community nutrition and led her to further explore career options in dietetics. Next year she hopes to complete a dietetic internship with the ultimate goal of becoming a practicing dietitian, working with food insecure populations. While her responsibilities as a student-athlete kept her from studying abroad, she has had the opportunity to travel extensively within the United States with fellow members of the swim team. Competing at the 2012 Olympic Trials while representing the U of A was an amazing honor, she said.

After a 10-year immigration process, Thanh’s family of five reunited with his grandmother in California with three suitcases, $40 and a new start. After attending high school in Fort Smith, he became a first-generation college student at the University of Arkansas. He plans to use his past and the skills he has learned in college to help underprivileged kids living in low-income communities. He recently accepted a two-year commitment to join Teach For America in San Francisco because he believes all students, regardless of background, deserve the kind of education traditionally found in top private schools and in cutting-edge charter schools. Through the university, he was able to not only join but become a leader of organizations like the Associated Student Government, the Volunteer Action Center, the Student Alumni Board and Greek Life. Because of his leadership within these organizations, he obtained legislative internships in Washington D.C. and a Teach for America internship in New York City.

Amy May West’s time at the University of Arkansas has included internships, two honors thesis, extracurricular activities and nearly 1,000 hours of community service. She says her U of A mentors and activities have developed her entrepreneurial spirit, which coupled with a passion for agriculture, have prepared her for an impactful career in agriculture. The Honors College student’s entrepreneurial spirit started during her sophomore year when she developed and planned an inaugural campus-wide event for all students. That event turned into the Chancellor’s Ball. The inaugural event was so successful that it was permanently placed under the Associated Student Government vice president’s tutelage. Two years later, Amy was elected ASG vice president and, once again, had the opportunity to plan the Chancellor’s Ball. The 2014 event grew in attendance by 300 percent, and a philanthropy was added to benefit the Full Circle Campus Food Pantry. While working on her individual thesis with philanthropic food aid organizations, she learned about the number of people worldwide who don’t have enough food to lead healthy lives. That experience inspired her to continue to make an impact as she has accepted a job with Lansing Trade Group, a commodity trading company focused on developing new agricultural markets.

B.S. in Nursing

Fort Smith, Arkansas Parents: John and Kay Williams Mentor: Dr. Nan Smith-Blair

• Vice President, Student Nurses Association • Academic Development Chair, Delta Delta Delta • Honors College Mentor • Honors College Fellow • Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholar

• Supplemental Instructor for Principles of Biology • Panhellenic Gamma Chi • Global Medical Brigades, Trip to Honduras • Studied abroad in Tanzania & Sweden

Honors College student Kelly Williams says her education at the University of Arkansas has enabled her to grow into her own person while discovering her own passions. She aspires to work as a nurse in a pediatric intensive care before obtaining a doctorate of nursing in pediatrics. She attributes her confidence in her abilities and her personal growth to her involvement in her education and extracurricular activities plus the incredible support from her faculty and peers. Kelly has been able to develop her own leadership style that will continue to influence her future professional endeavors through her involvement specifically in Delta Delta Delta sorority, the Supplemental Instruction Program and her job at the National Student Leadership Conference. Kelly is incredibly thankful for the international travel she has experienced while a student. She has studied abroad three times, including trips to Tanzania, Sweden and Honduras. She has climbed part of Mount Kilimanjaro, seen firsthand the “big 5” wildlife in the Serengeti and looked for fossils at Olduvai Gorge. In Sweden, she spent a month visiting healthcare facilities and listening to lectures. Then she traveled with Global Medical Brigades, a registered student organization, to Honduras to provide medical care to rural areas. During a three-day period, she sharpened her nursing assessment skills while helping triage more than 800 patients.
