Welcome to Hoban’s 39th Annual Extravaganza Gala, A Knight on the Town! We are excited to welcome you to campus for what promises to be an evening to remember. Extravaganza celebrates all that is good about Hoban–most notably our greatest asset, our people. Thank you for joining us as we continue to lead in the Holy Cross tradition.

Since 1953, Hoban has prepared students to meet the unique challenges of the world around them. Our mission as a Catholic, Holy Cross school is to educate the hearts and minds of students, so they develop the competence to see and the courage to act. In my estimation, this is the noblest of causes.

Part of our mission as a Catholic school is to keep tuition affordable so that the Hoban experience remains accessible for all. We appreciate our families’ financial sacrifice to provide their children with a Hoban education. Still, tuition revenue alone does not cover the costs associated with educating more than 860 students. Extravaganza gives Hoban the “extra” leverage we need to provide our Knights with vital financial and material resources, meaningful spiritual engagement opportunities, world-class academic programming, robust cocurricular activities and a top-tier facility. To accomplish all of this, your support remains vital.

The Ralph L. & Florence A. Bernard Foundation continues its tradition of providing a matching gift to help raise scholarship monies. This year’s challenge is to match $100,000! At the end of the night, we ask you to raise your paddle to help exceed the $200,000 goal for student scholarships and financial assistance.

The Ralph L. & Florence A. Bernard Foundation and other benefactors support the Extravaganza Challenge Scholarship Match

Since 2004, the Bernard Family and the Ralph L. & Florence A. Bernard Foundation have annually shared their friendship and generosity with an Extravaganza Challenge Scholarship Match. This challenge originated with Mr. Ralph L. Bernard Sr. who passed away in 2009 at the age of 94. His children, Ralph Bernard Jr. ’62 and Mrs. Regina Dain, grandchildren Adam Bernard and Angie Craig, and the Foundation have continued this legacy of supporting Catholic education in the Akron area. The Bernard Family, with the support of generous Extravaganza guests, has raised $2,101,448 for student financial assistance over the past 19 years.

This year, the 20th anniversary of the Bernard Family’s Extravaganza Scholarship Match, the Bernard Family has generously agreed to MATCH DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR ANY AMOUNT UP TO $100,000. We sincerely appreciate their philanthropic commitment to Archbishop Hoban High School and Catholic education. Please consider making a gift today. THE MAYNARD FAMILY FOUNDATION

Philip H. Maynard ’60 was the founder of The Maynard Family Foundation, a private, charitable foundation formed in 1993 dedicated to helping create and sustain a vibrant and healthy community in the Greater Akron area, where residents have equal opportunities to live, work and be enriched.

Phil was a dedicated supporter of Archbishop Hoban High School, having served on the Board of Directors for more than three decades in multiple capacities, including chair. He was a philanthropic leader among the Hoban community and led efforts during the “Hoban 2000” capital campaign, which constructed the iconic golden dome, Alumni Gymnasium and Nolan Concourse, and in the 2013 “This Is Hoban” campaign, which included the construction of the Maynard Family Center for Spiritual Formation, the Holy Cross Chapel and Moreau Ministry Hall, the Didado Family Health and Fitness Center and the expansion of the Hoban Endowment Fund for student scholarships.

Despite his passing in 2021, Phil’s legacy of generosity and stewardship lives on in The Maynard Family Foundation under the guidance of his daughters Amy (Maynard ’89) Griffith and Emily (Maynard ’91) Eckart, their spouses and their children.

The Fedorovich‘s are long-time supporters of Hoban. Rick is a member of the Hoban Board of Directors, serving the school in a variety of capacities, including board chair and capital campaign chair. Supporting education is a passion for both Lisa and Rick—they are also benefactors of Lisa’s alma mater, Hathaway Brown School, where she chairs the advancement committee.

The Fedorovich’s philanthropy is diverse, inlcuding the arts and health services. Richard has served on Akron General and Cleveland Clinic’s board of trustees and committees. Lisa is a trustee of the Musical Arts Association (The Cleveland Orchestra), where she is vice-chair of the Education Committee, and performs in The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, where she chairs the chorus’s Operating Committee. She is also a trustee of The Esselstyn Foundation (promoting health through nutrition) and the Ohio Board of Hope for Henry Foundation (to improve the inpatient hospital experience for seriously ill children).

For the past 39 years there has been a dedicated, creative and tireless group of volunteers at Hoban. The Extravaganza Decorating Committee is a special group of friends who start in the fall, meet at least once a week, work from home and seem to always be carrying craft supplies in their vehicles. Every year a theme is chosen and the decorating committee makes it come to life for our one night of enjoyment. Lifelong friendships have been made over cutting, pasting and constructing.

This year, Cara Beard and Michelle Mann headed up an outstanding group of volunteers. And to take this to the next level, a private chef will prepare breakfast and spectacular three-course dinners daily, highlighting traditional Tuscan flavors. Relax in the private swimming pool and spacious garden or fire up the stone pizza oven in the barbecue area for an al fresco lunch. Your villa’s spectacular location provides amazing views as well as easy access to Cortona where you can explore the town’s historic monuments, fascinating shops, and tempting restaurants.

And to make this trip absolutely remarkable, your adventure includes a wine-making workshop in a traditional winery. Here you will taste single variety wines from the vats and barrels located in their cellar. Under the guidance of the cellar master, each person in your group will mix base wines to create a brandnew blend, and then vote to choose the best one to bottle. You will also personalize your own labels to go on your bottles of the selected new wine – for a total of 60 bottles of wine (6 bottles for each). The winery will age the bottles for one month before you ship them back to the States. After this incredible workshop, all of you will enjoy a traditional Tuscan lunch in the charming dining room while tasting wines from the winery.
