Milwaukee ranks among top 10 U.S. arts cities The Business Journal Date: Tuesday, June 3, 2003, 11:56am CDT The Milwaukee Art Museum's Santiago Calatrava-designed addition is being credited for putting the city of Milwaukee among the top arts destinations in the country in a recent readers' poll by national arts lifestyle magazine "AmericanStyle." Milwaukee placed 10th on the 2003 Top 25 Arts Destination list in the magazine's June issue. It is the first time Milwaukee made the list. Cities in the Midwest made a strong showing on the annual list, which typically favors cities on the coasts. Chicago topped the 2003 list, rising from the fifth spot past year. Columbus, Ohio, debuted on the list at 12th, with Cleveland ranking 15th and Saugatuck, Mich., ranking 16th. New York City ranked second, followed by Washington, D.C.; Boston; San Francisco; Santa Fe, N.M.; Philadelphia; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Los Angeles. Aside from the Art Museum, Milwaukee was recognized for its 3rd Ward arts scene, including the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, and arts destinations like the Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion, the Charles Allis Art Museum, and the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum.
