Calatrava drafts bridge design for Milwaukee The Business Journal - by Shannon Stevens Date: Sunday, July 25, 1999, 11:00pm CDT Artists like to work in threes. And Santiago Calatrava is no exception. Calatrava has drafted a preliminary design for a pedestrian bridge that would cross the Milwaukee River south of North Avenue, sources close to Calatrava said. Calatrava, known throughout the world for designing fantastical bridges, is the Spanish architect and artist behind the $50 million Milwaukee Art Museum expansion and the planned Milwaukee School of Engineering gymnasium and classroom building. Taking inspiration from the carbon fiber supports on the Burke Brise Soleil, the wings of his museum expansion, Calatrava's initial bridge design calls for a carbon fiber structure. It would be the only bridge in the world constructed of such material. Sources familiar with the design, who asked not to be named, stressed that the design is in a "very preliminary stage" and could only go ahead if the River Revitalization Group is able to raise enough money in private donations to cover the cost of the design and construction. No cost estimate could be obtained. Part of the trick in raising the funds will be the supporting development on either side of the bridge. While sources contacted about the bridge wouldn't elaborate on their plans for the area, several projects nearby could spur philanthropists and others to open their checkbooks to make the bridge construction and other development happen. The Northern Lights building, on the west side of Water Street where Water turns into Brady Street, has been purchased by Charlie Trainer's TMB Development, which plans to upgrade the office building and attract retailers to the ground floor. Just behind that structure is a building that Peter Ogden of Ogden & Co. Inc. has purchased, with plans to renovate for Ogden offices. Across the river from the Northern Lights building is the area dubbed Beerline B, a property scheduled by the city for redevelopment, including public park areas and high-end housing. Importantly, TMB has teamed up with the city of Milwaukee, thanks largely to the efforts of Ald. Michael D'Amato, to help pay for a $200,000 riverwalk project that would serve the neighborhood, running from the Northern Lights property all the way to the North Avenue Dam.

The city will contribute as much as $150,000 in grants to the project which, if Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist has his way, will eventually be connected to rest of the riverwalk. The mayor wants the public walkway to run from the Summerfest grounds all the way to North Avenue. Working closely with the Brady Street Association, the developers and the city have decided to include as part of the riverwalk extension a public boat docking area, dubbed the Brady Street Landing. A walkway would connect the landing to Brady Street to encourage tourists to shop and walk. The larger goal is to have Brady Street connected to Lake Michigan on one end and the Milwaukee River on the other. Those involved with Calatrava and the revitalization of the river and lakefront hope to find enough donors by the end of the summer to move forward with their bridge-building plans, a plan that would put Milwaukee in the same company as Zurich, Switzerland; Valencia, Spain; and Paris, as cities in which Calatrava has been commissioned to design structures.
