MAM project named 'Best of 2001' The Business Journal Date: Thursday, December 20, 2001, 5:21pm CST The Milwaukee Art Museum's Calatrava-designed addition has been named the "Overall Project of the Year" by Midwest Construction magazine's "Best of 2001" feature in December. Midwest Construction will honor 22 projects, all selected by a jury of industry leaders, as the best in the region. The $100 million Milwaukee Art Museum project was submitted by C.G. Schmidt Construction Co., Milwaukee, which served as the managing contractor. Designed by international architect Santiago Calatrava, the Milwaukee Art Museum is a new 125,000-square-foot cast-in-place addition to the existing structure. Made almost entirely of concrete and glass, the structure was designed and constructed to serve as a high profile and widely recognized symbol for the city of Milwaukee. The dramatic design includes louvered wings enclosing the reception hall, a restaurant with a 180-degree lake view and double masts anchoring the building and its cabled pedestrian footbridge. C.G. Schmidt's most recent projects also include the Milwaukee County Zoo, Milwaukee Public Museum, Red Arrow Park, Waukesha Memorial Hospital, West Allis Memorial Hospital and YMCA of Greater Metro Milwaukee.
