How do I catch a person? Appropriate posture for catching will be demonstrated for you. First and foremost you should always handle someone gently. Remembering to protect your back by bending your knees as you lower them to the floor. Please be mindful of the feelings of heavier people. It is not appropriate to run and get a chair because of someone’s weight. You are still able to catch this person with the assistance of another worker and this to will be demonstrated for you. (Okay to ask if they desire to sit down) If you are ministering alone and someone heavier than you is receiving ministry; brace your body against that person and place one leg behind and prop them. This will keep them from falling. The appropriate way to catch a full figured person have two (2) Altar Workers stand directly behind them as close as they can with their hands clamped around the wrist. Try not to hold hands this is not secure sometimes the hands will easily come loose with the pressure of weight. By holding on to the wrist you have more strength. Attempt to keep them standing, this is sometimes possible by pressing your body against them and bracing them, but if this is not possible then with your hands clamped around the wrist and your other hand gripping the other side arms gently lower them to the floor bending your knees to protect your back. Practice with each other during this training class. Don’t allow the altar to become crammed as you are placing people on the floor; pivot them as to prevent them from laying on top of each other. Concerning the men catching women and women catching men, this will vary from church to church. Please be aware of this as you travel. As for me, I have no problem with it as long as it is properly done. Always make sure you refrain from touching people inappropriately. Your arms and hands should be clear of any forbidden areas. Even if you’re ministering, be mindful as to not touch areas forbidden; ask for assistance from the appropriate gender.
