Bill Cosby facing first sex assault Earthquake jolts B.C., charge after dozens of women lights up social media alleged he drugged them THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ELKINS PARK, Pa. — Bill Cosby was charged Wednesday with drugging and sexually assaulting an Ontario woman at his home 12 years ago — the first criminal charges brought against the comedian out of the torrent of allegations that destroyed his good-guy image as America’s Dad. The case sets the stage for perhaps the biggest Hollywood celebrity trial of the mobile-all-the-time era and could send the 78-year-old Cosby to prison in the twilight of his life. The woman at the centre of the case is Andrea Constand, a Toronto massage therapist who was a Temple University employee in Pennsylvania at the time of the alleged assault. She told police that Cosby drugged her and violated her by putting his hands down her pants at his mansion in suburban Philadelphia in 2004, but no charges were initially laid. Cosby had no comment on his way in and out of court as he was arraigned on a charge of aggravated indecent assault, punishable by five to 10 years behind bars and a $25,000 fine. He did not have to enter a plea and was allowed to remain free on $1 million bail for another hearing Jan. 14. Guided by his lawyers, he walked slowly into the courtroom, using a cane

and wearing a grey tweed hoodie sweater. He seemed to have trouble seeing the paperwork and finding the place to sign, and his lawyers helped him hold the pen. But he seemed at ease, laughing and chatting with his attorneys. When the judge said, “Good luck, Mr. Cosby,” he shouted: “Thank you!” Prosecutors accused Cosby of plying Constand with pills and wine, then penetrating her with his fingers without her consent, while she was drifting in

and out of consciousness, unable to resist or cry out. She was “frozen, paralysed, unable to move,” said Montgomery County District Attorney-elect Kevin Steele. In court documents, prosecutors said the drugs were the cold medicine Benadryl or some other, unidentified substance. Prosecutors also said there are probably other women who were similarly drugged and violated by Cosby. Steele urged them to come forward.

By Jeff Nagel - BC Local News Many B.C. residents were jolted awake late Tuesday night by a small earthquake that briefly rattled homes across much of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. The magnitude 4.3 quake at 11:39 p.m. was centred about eight kilometres east of Sidney, between Victoria and Vancouver, according to Earthquakes Canada. The shaker lasted for just several seconds but stirred fears that it could just be the start of a much more serious quake, or might be followed by significant aftershocks. Neither scenario materialized. Nor was any tsunami warning issued. Social media was deluged with individual reports of what the quake felt like, with some saying they first thought a vehicle slammed into their home. Natural Resources Canada said it had received no reports of significant damage and none would be expected. Many people felt their beds shake, heard dressers or windows rattle, and many small objects in homes were tipped over. SFU geologist Brent Ward, who chairs the university's earth sciences

department, said it was a crustal earthquake about 50 to 60 kilometres beneath the surface. Crustal quakes are much more common and closer to populated areas than massive 8.0-plus subduction zone quakes – often dubbed the Big One – that strike every few hundred years well off the west coast and would cause farreaching damage. "Of a bigger concern are these crustal earthquakes because we get them in a much higher frequency," Ward said. He said larger crustal quakes than last night's – in the 6 to 7 range – hit every 50 or 60 years in B.C. and the next one could be severe if it's closer to the surface and near large numbers of people. "If it was only 10 kilometres deep the shaking would have been a lot more intense," Ward said. A 7.2 crustal quake near Courtenay in 1946 caused extensive landslides, soil liquefaction and damage to brick buildings.Ward noted B.C.'s population at risk is much larger now. "You can imagine if we got a 7.2 earthquake underneath a populated part of Vancouver Island, there would be significant damage and there would definitely be fatalities." When B.C. released its new earthquake response plan earlier this year it did not model its worst-case scenario on a megathrust subduction zone quake, but rather shallow crustal earthquakes directly under our big cities. The result: an estimated 10,000 dead in Metro Vancouver, 128,000 seriously injured and 30 per cent of buildings receiving extensive damage in the event of a 7.3 magnitude crustal quake directly beneath Vancouver. A similar scenario of a 7.0 quake beneath Victoria yielded an estimate of up to 1,500 dead and 19,000 injured. People in different communities and neighbourhoods will feel the shaking of an earthquake differently because of the underlying material. Ward said he didn't even wake up because there's bedrock not far below his house in Coquitlam, while his niece in Langley on loose sediment soil felt intense shaking. "Places like Richmond, Delta and Langley – areas where there's thick sediments – those are going to feel the earthquake a lot more because the shaking is more intense."

Gun violence continues to be a priority for Surrey RCMP SURREY — While Surrey was hit with another drive-by shooting Sunday, the city’s top cop highlighted the efforts made in 2015 to combat a violent gang conflict. RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Fordy said in his year-end message that murder rates, property crime and fatal collisions are all down in 2015. “Unfortunately, the city was plagued with a number of shootings related to the drug trade this year, driving our violent crime rate,” Fordy said. “Our investigative teams, supported by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, have made significant headway in disrupting this drug activity and the related violence.” Fordy said almost 800 arrests were made related to the conflict and 290 charges have been laid. One of the successes was the arrest on Dec. 17 of Shakiel Basra, who’s alleged to be involved in the violence and had been on the run for three months. And the first person charged in

connection with the conflict, Arman Dhatt, pleaded guilty in Surrey Provincial Court Dec. 18 to a series of drug and firearms charges. The 19-year-old was sentenced to four years minus credit for pre-trial time served, for a net sentence of just under three years. But the shootings have continued through December. About 1 a.m. Sunday, a house in the 9100-block of 138 A Street was struck by several bullets as its residents slept. No one has been arrested and the investigation continues. On Dec. 9 about 2:30 a.m., shots were fired at a house in the 7800-block of 132nd Street, breaking windows. No one was hurt. On Dec. 8, a black Audi 07 was seen leaving the scene of a shooting near the 12700-block 37B Avenue in Newton about 11:40 a.m. Mounties said the shooting was targeted and was linked to the continuing conflict. No one has been charged. Between March

“The ongoing unchecked shooting spree is a huge concern for Surrey citizens,” Ralston said. “Research from other cities shows better and more effective police response, both short and long term, is possible.” Fordy said Surrey RCMP has added 75 new officers to its ranks since last May when the federal government approved 100 additional officers for Surrey. “In addition, 31 municipal employees were added to support our operation,” Fordy said. “The growth of our detachment has allowed us to enhance our service delivery, particularly with respect to our uniformed first responders in general duty and youth policing.” Fordy said the RCMP is working with Surrey residents and partner agencies on a number of outreach programs to improve public safety. “While enforcement is a key part of policing, public safety does not improve simply by making arrests,” Fordy said. and Dec. 27, there were 56 shootings. The violence led to public concern and calls to action by politicians. And the gunplay was a focus for local candidates in October’s federal election, with all three major parties promising more police officers for Surrey. Surrey-Whalley NDP MLA Bruce Ralston said Monday that not enough is being done to combat the gun violence.

Suburban Edmonton shooting 'very serious random act of violence' Edmonton police say a shooting in a south Edmonton suburb that left a woman in critical condition was a “very serious random act of violence.” The shooting took place at a home in the area of Graham Wynd and 199th Street, in the Glastonbury area of south Edmonton, just before 5 a.m. Dec. 27. A 49-year-old woman was sleeping inside the home when a shot was fired from outside. Police say there were other people in the home at the time, including a child. The

woman was described by police as being in critical, but stable condition. A statement released by police Monday said investigators believe the shot was fired from 199th Street into the home. Police want to talk to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity or vehicles in the area of 199th Street and 62nd Avenue between 3:00 and 5 a.m. Sunday.

Four-year sentence for teenage Delta drug dealer Arman Dhatt A Delta teen peripherally linked to conflict between rival drug dealers in Surrey and Delta this year has been sentenced to four years in jail for a string of drug and firearm offences. Arman Dhatt, 19, pleaded guilty in October to seven charges, including drug trafficking and possessing a restricted firearm. He was sentenced in Surrey Provincial Court on Friday (Dec. 18) morning. Crown and defence entered a joint submission recommending a four-year sentence. With credit for time served in pretrial custody since his arrest in April, Dhatt has just under three years remaining of his prison sentence. The court heard that Surrey RCMP received a tip in March from a person who provided the phone number for a dial-a-dope line used by drug dealers. The informant also suggested those operating the drug line might be connected to a rash of shootings that had taken place in Surrey and Delta in previous months. Undercover officers called the line, making 12 drug purchases in March and April. Dhatt, who was 18 at the time, met with the officers for several of the transactions, exchanging heroin and crack cocaine for cash. On April 10, police executed a search warrant at Dhatt's home near 78 Avenue and 118 Street in Delta. Officers found Dhatt sleeping in his room and when they attempted to apprehend him, he resisted arrest. Under his bedroom mattress, they found a semi-automatic rifle and loaded handgun, as well as bundles of cash and

ammunition. The serial number had been obliterated from the handgun. There were also large quantities of crack, powder cocaine, methamphetamine and steroids in the bedroom closet and bathroom. Scales and razors for weighing and dividing drugs were also present. In total, said Crown prosecutor Joshua Cramer, the street value of the drug stash was estimated at $121,920. Both Crown and defence emphasized that neither of the firearms found in Dhatt's possession tested positive as being connected with any of the shootings in Surrey and Delta this year that have injured at least 13 people and killed one man. Defence lawyer Matthew Nathanson said the string of shootings provided a "backdrop" only for

Dhatt's actives. The court heard that the dial-adope line remained active after Dhatt's arrest and police continued their investigation, resulting in the arrests of Rajvir Sunner and Pardip Brar in May. The latter was described in court Friday as the dope line "boss," though it was apparent from text messages that he reported to someone even higher up identified only as "K." Dhatt submitted a letter to the court, apologizing to his family and the community for his criminal behaviour. "I'm putting all this behind me and focusing on a positive future," he said through his lawyer, adding he sought to be a productive member of society. "I'm determined not to do this again." He listened from the prisoner's box

throughout the sentencing, his black hair spiked and wearing dark-rimmed glasses. Many members of his family were present in the gallery. The court heard that his family knew Dhatt was dealing drugs but had staged a series of unsuccessful interventions and were unable to stop him. Nathanson said his client's attitude has changed since his arrest eight months ago – observations echoed in letters of support submitted by Dhatt's family. His parents said their son has taken full responsibility for his actions and that he was looking forward to pursuing a career as a heavy duty mechanic after he's served his jail time. His cousins also noted he's been taking course in prison and was working toward his GED (high school graduation), and has reconnected with his Sikh faith. "This is someone who has a large support network around him," said Nathanson. In delivering Dhatt's sentence, Judge Paul Dohm called the drug trafficking business "pure evil," telling the teen "there's nothing good about it." Dohm urged him to follow through on his intentions to turn his life around and use his time in jail wisely so he could pursue a career upon his release. He also suggested Dhatt consider leaving Surrey to distance himself from his criminal connections. Dhatt, who has no prior adult criminal record, is also subject to lifetime ban on possessing firearms. -by Sheila Reynolds - Surrey North Delta Leader

Fresno police investigate beating of Sikh man as hate crime Fresno-A Sikh man was attacked Saturday morning west of Highway 99 in what Fresno police are investigating as a hate crime – the latest such attack on a Sikh resident in the Fresno area. Around 6:30 a.m., Amrik Singh Bal, 68, was waiting alone for a ride to work in the cold, 30-degree fog on Shields Avenue between Brawley and Blythe avenues. Bal wore a blue turban and has a white beard, said Ike Iqbal S. Grewal, member of the Sikh Council of Central California. Two white males stopped their car in front of Bal and started yelling obscenities at him, said Fresno police Sgt. Greg Noll. Fearing for his safety, Bal attempted to cross the street. It was then that the suspects backed up their car, hitting Bal with their back bumper, Noll said. Then the two got out of the car and attacked Bal – striking him in the face and upper body. During the assault, one of the suspects yelled “Why are you here?” Bal fell to the ground and hit his head. The suspects fled west on Shields Avenue, police said. Bal suffered moderate abrasions to his nose and right hand. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where it was determined that he had a broken collar bone. Grewal said the suspects only fled when

In May 2013, 82-year-old Piara Singh was attacked outside the Nanaksar Sikh Temple in south Fresno by a man who later allegedly made inflammatory comments about Muslims.

The alleged assailant, Gilbert Garcia Jr., later pleaded no contest to a hate crime and was sentenced to 13 years in state prison. Noll said police have started a haterelated criminal investigation into the attack on Bal. A detective is working the case in an attempt to identify the suspects involved, Noll said. “The Fresno police will be conferring with additional resources to include the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI in an attempt to solve this case.” Anyone with information on this The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-bycase is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Twitter adding tools to deal with abuse Washington, Dec.30 (ANI): Microblogging site Twitter is reportedly in the process of adding more tools and hiring more people to enforce its anti-abuse policies. As a first step, the company has rearranged some paragraphs in its terms of service, and celebrated the move in a new blog post. The Verge quoted Megan Cristina, Director (Trust and Safety), as saying that henceforth Twitter will not tolerate behavior intended to harass, intimidate, or use fear to silence another user's voice. Cristina further revealed that Twitter will continue to take action on accounts that cross the line into abuse. Twitter has added a significant new

section that bans what it terms as "hateful conduct" that targets users on the basis of their race, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, disability, or disease. It has also included a rule that bans creating multiple accounts for the primary purpose of inciting harm toward others based on those categories. At the same time, the old harassment rules likely prevented this sort of behavior as well. Cristina said the company is

Say hello to ‘social’ robot Nadine Washington, D.C., Dec. 30 (ANI): Meet Nadine, a robot developed by scientists at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore). Nadine is powered by intelligent software similar to Apple's Siri or Microsoft's Cortana. Nadine can be a personal assistant in offices and homes in future. And, she can be used as a social companion for both the young and the elderly. A humanoid like Nadine, who looks almost like a human being, with soft skin and flowing brunette hair, is just one of the interfaces where technology can be applied. It can also be made

virtual and appear on television or computer screen, and become a lowcost virtual social companion. Professor Thalmann, the director of the Institute for Media Innovation who supervised the development of Nadine, said these social robots are among NTU's many exciting new media innovations that companies can leverage for commercialisation. He added that

Samsung experimental gadgets to be showcased at CES in Las Vegas Washington, (ANI): Come January 2016, and South Korean technology major Samsung will show off for the first time ever a trio of devices from its Creative Lab or C-Lab program at the CES, the consumer electronics and consumer technology tradeshow that takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to The Verge, the devices include WELT, a "smart belt" that tracks users' waist size and activity, TipTalk, a product that lets people listen to sound from smart watches by simply "touching their finger to their ear" and Rink,a motion controller for virtual reality devices. C-Lab is part of Samsung's efforts to foster creativity in its famously monolithic corporate structure. A Bloomberg News report said Samsung’s C-Lab allows employees to take at least a year off from their normal jobs to pursue experimental projects. (ANI)

robotics has advanced significantly over the past few decades and are being used in the manufacturing and logistics sectors. As countries worldwide face challenges of an aging population, social robots can be one solution to address a shrinking workforce, become personal companions for children and the elderly at home, and even serve as a platform for healthcare services in the future. Thalmann also pointed out that this robot will somewhat be like a real companion that is always with you and conscious of what is happening. So in the future, these socially intelligent robots could be like C-3PO, the iconic golden droid from Star Wars, with knowledge of both language and etiquette. With technological improvements in silicon chips, sensors and computation, physical social robots such as Nadine are poised to become more visible in both offices and homes in the future. (ANI)

New ion-exchange membrane can convert chemical reaction energy to electrical current Newyory, (ANI): A new study has developed ion-exchange synthetic membranes based on amphiphilic compounds that are able to convert the energy of chemical reactions into electrical current. The research undertaken by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology oncluded that fuel cells consist of separate galvanic cells and their closest relatives are batteries (primary cells) and accumulators (secondary cells). Batteries convert the energy of the reaction between an oxidizing agent and a reducing agent, and stop working when these agents are used up. Scientists were able to predict the formation of these discs with pores and cylinders based on information on the structure of the benzenesulfonates being investigated, their geometry and physical and chemical properties. In a number of technological applications, fuel cells stand a good chance of replacing internal combustion engines at least. Before this happens however, special infrastructure will need to be put in place (the hydrogen needs to be stored somewhere, it will require special filling stations, pipes designed for high pressures, fuel tanks) and a number of improvements will need to be made to fuel cells themselves.

Will Fitoor make 'Body Sculpting' the new in thing? If one goes by Aditya's new avatar for 'Fitoor', one can surely start believing that, flaunting six- or eightpack abs for a film have become passe . Aditya Roy Kapur has taken a different route to showcase a welltoned physique in his next- 'Fitoor'. He has opted for body sculpting. "Aditya has always had an athletic physique, but for 'Fitoor', that stars Katrina Kaif - he decided to take up body sculpting to develop a completely different look from what has been seen of him before," says a source. Body sculpting or core conditioning is a non-aerobic, muscletoning regimen that usually focuses on one's core strength. "It is a technique that is used to shape the muscles in one's body to perfection without bulking it up in any way," adds the source. Aditya Roy Kapur completely surrendered to his director for the character and transformed himself as per Abhishek Kapoor's vision of him. Aditya shared, "What I love, as an actor, is the endeavour to adapt yourself to the character that you are playing. For this one, my director had a vision for me, and it meant I had to drop more weight to look a certain way. I guess if you change the way you look then you change the way you feel too. The process was gruelling, but it

taught me a lot about myself." Fitoor stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Katrina Kaif opposite each other for the very first time. In fact, the source further adds "They both are looking good in the film and share a sizzling chemistry, as seen in the aamsutra

David Beckham splurges on car

English football great David Beckham has reportedly spent 140,000 pounds to be an owner of a lavish car. The former soccer star, who has sons Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 13, Cruz, 10 and four-year-old daughter Harper, with wife Victoria Beckham, is reportedly hoping to add a F-TYPE Project 7 Jaguar to his motor collection, reports mirror.co.uk. "David loves his cars and these are something special. But it's not going to be used for family trips or for popping to the shops. It's an indulgence, something for a Sunday morning blast,` said a source. "The car is sold out so anyone wanting one has to go on a waiting list. A lot of people ordered them while they were still on the drawing board in development. But I don't think it will be a problem for David to get hold of one,` the source added. The 40-year-old already has a Cadillac Escalade, a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti as well as a Jeep, Audi, Bentley and Aston Martin. By Santa Banta News Network

Kanye, Kim Offered over $2 mn for baby pictures Pop star Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West have been offered $2.5 million for the first photographs of their baby son Saint. The couple welcomed little Saint into the world on December 5 and since his birth, they have been inundated with offers from publications keen to show him off for the first time. According to tmz.com, offers range from $2 million to $2.5 million and request the full family, including Saint's older sister North, two, to take part in a range of pictures, including candid group shots. However, insiders told the website the couple are "almost certain" they will reject all offers

for the pictures. When North was born, Kanye, 38, showed off a selection of pictures of her on his mother-in-law Kris Jenner's now-defunct talk show, fuelling speculation that Saint's public debut will come on Kim's sister Khloe Kardashian's new programme ‘Kocktails with Khloe’, which launches in the new year. The family have already been seen in public together since Saint's birth, but during the visit to take the infant to the doctor last week, Kim, 35, and her rapper husband ensured he was kept fully covered and away from view in his car seat. Aamir and Anushka are the hottest vegetarians Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and actress Anushka Sharma have been named the hottest vegetarians of 2015 by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The two winners beat a strong group of competitors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor, R. Madhavan and Dhanush. "It is very important what you eat, as that is what you are. So it's very important to make sure you're eating enough vegetables and drinking enough water, which I've always done," Anushka said in a statement. Visitors to PETAIndia.com had cast their votes to help the organisation to decide whom it would choose as the most alluring celebrities. Aamir's decision to eat vegan food was prompted by a video about eating healthy that his wife Kiran Rao showed

him. Vegans refrain from using any animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products. "At the end of it, I was convinced that vegans are way ahead of nonvegetarians and even vegetarians," Aamir said.

Sachin Bangera, PETA India manager (media and celebrity projects),feels that Aamir and Anushka are the perfect example of "fit vegetarians". "And they're inspiring millions of their fans to try plant-based foods", he added. -By Santa Banta News Network

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Bajirao Mastani", based on the novel "Rau" authored by N.S. Inamdar, is a fictionalised romance drama that encapsulates the 20 year reign of the Maratha warrior Bajirao and his relationship with his second wife Mastani. The film begins with Bajirao's appointment as Peshwa in the court of Chhattrapati Shahu in Satara. The narration thereafter leads you into his expeditions, his encounter with Mastani and their subsequent, intense romance. Mounted on a magnificent scale with well-etched characters, resplendent sets and period costumes, the director, intricately and flawlessly, transports you to the era of the Peshwas, circa 17201740. What makes the film stand out is Bhansali's direction. He astutely manages to guide his team to deliver the best. Be it in performances, music, visuals or action, his inimitable stamp is written over every frame of the film. Prakash Kapadia's screenplay is water-tight and engaging, keeping you riveted to the screen for over 2 hours. His dialogues are colloquial, yet, power-

are captivating. Bajirao Mastani is Ranveer Singh's canvas. With his well-chiselled physique, bald pate with a single lock of hair, he slips into Bajirao's hide perfectly. His energy and intensity on screen is palpable. You empathise with him when he is honest with both his wives and you root for him when he rebels against his widowed mother Radhabai and the high priest. And most of all, your heart beats for him when he pines for Mastani. The last scene of the film is powerful and Ranveer's presence and competence, takes it a rung higher. Deepika Padukone as the defiant and confident warrior Mastani, madly in love with Bajirao, is effortlessly

convincing. Her performance resonates with the right attitude, both as a warrior and as Bajirao's love interest, making her stand out. Priyanka Chopra in her navaris -the nine yard saris, as the obviously hurt Kashibai -- Bajirao's first wife, though a bit dramatic, is herself, glossed-up and pretentious. But nevertheless, she essays her role ably. Tanvi Azmi as the obtrusive Radhabai is remarkable, with the right amount of drama and restraint in her performance. The others in supporting roles, too, are perfectly handpicked and deliver outstanding performances. Visually, the film is mesmerising. The computer generated images seamlessly interlace cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee's frames. With his wide angle shots, he not only captures the locales, but also the intricate details of the tale, to perfection. His atmospheric lighting lends authenticity to the period depicted in the film. He has also managed to portray the battle scenes brilliantly, making it look natural and real. Bhansali's music, with its theatrical background score and soulful songs, integrates well with the narration. The well-choreographed dance sequences are a treat to watch, though the song "Pinga" seems a bit forced and is reminiscent of his "Dola re Dola" in Devdas. The action sequences by Shyam Kaushal are easily one of the highlights of the film. Overall, "Bajirao Mastani" is a spectacular masterpiece which will stay with you much after you leave the cinema hall. -Santa Banta

Creative ways to enjoy family time (NC) Between busy work schedules and endless extracurricular activities, fitting in quality mealtimes can be challenging for many families. Cooking together is the perfect way to slow the pace. In addition to creating a bonding experience, family cooking also provides the benefit of developing essential life skills for your children. For the Goodman family, life is as busy as ever with Scott (father) and Penny (mother) both having full-time jobs, Jake (son) being an influential actor and Tess (daughter) being a competitive gymnast. Regardless of how hectic life can be, the Goodmans have created a mealtime routine that accommodates the entire family. “When we first started preparing family meals together, our goal was simply to help our children learn how to cook. It has evolved into so much more than that because it gives us the invaluable chance to enjoy each other's company and connect as a family, says Scott Goodman. The biggest things that discourage parents from cooking with their children are time constraints. A survey of Ontario parents found that 77 per cent believed that they did not have enough time to share their cooking skills with their children. But research has shown that it doesn't have to be time consuming. These three tips from the Registered Dietitians at Dairy Farmers of Canada

over mistakes or messes – consider it a learning experience for kids to experiment and understand food. 2. Start out simply. It's important to build your children's confidence. Make cooking fun by getting them to try an activity that interests them or a step from their favourite meal.

will help you start the year off right and get your kids cooking with you in the kitchen:

1. Let them know they're welcome. The next time you're preparing a meal, ask your children to help. Don't fret

3. Build their confidence. Kids need to know that you trust them in the kitchen. Once they've mastered simpler tasks, give them more complex jobs so they stay motivated to continue cooking. More information on cooking with kids, as well as easy nutritious recipes visit FamilyKitchen.ca

Essential steps for fitting a hockey helmet (NC) When worn properly, hockey helmets can help reduce the risk of serious head and brain injuries. Before your child takes to the ice this season, make sure their hockey helmet fits and meets the safety standards by following these tips. Quick tips: • Check equipment each season. Hockey helmets should fit snugly to prevent shifting and should be comfortable to wear. • Make sure the helmet sits low on the forehead (only one to two finger

widths above the eyebrows). • Centre the chinstrap buckle and ensure it gently makes contact under the chin. • Tighten the chinstrap. Only up to two of your fingers should fit under the chin. There are regulations for face protectors and hockey helmets sold in Canada. When buying a hockey helmet or visor, make sure it has the CSA mark, which is required by law to show that it meets the requirements. Hockey helmets must also show the

date the helmet was made. Helmets more than five years old should not be bought or sold as the parts and materials can break down with age. To report an incident, contact the manufacturer or retailer. You are also encouraged to contact Health Canada.

When exploring options for your child's career path it's important to consider all opportunities. Think about indemand careers that will set your child up for success. A great place to begin is the Ontario College of Trades' earnwhileyoulearn.ca website, which features videos from apprentices and certified skilled trades professionals talking about what made them pursue a rewarding career in the trades as well as a host of FAQs. “This website helps parents and their pre-teens explore the endless possibilities of where a career in the skilled trades can lead,â€? says David Tsubouchi, registrar of the College. While preparing six and seventh graders for high school may seem a bit premature, parents are now discovering that it's important and in some cases necessary. Students need to know what prerequisites are required for all potential careers prior to making any decisions. For example, Grade 12 English, math and physics or chemistry are all requirements to get into many apprenticeships. The Conference Board of Canada anticipates a labour shortage in the next 10 to 15 years. Women's Health: Push, Pull, Bend and Twist your way to a stronger body (NC) Why do most women avoid strength training? According to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, less half of female gym members use strength machines, and only 30 per cent use free weights or barbells for strength training. Strength training is one of the core pillars of physical activity and has many health benefits for women, yet it is widely ignored by many female exercisers. “One of the biggest reasons women avoid strength training is because of an old myth that it will make them look like a male bodybuilder,” says Michele Colwell, vice president of personal training with GoodLife Fitness. “Women don't naturally have enough testosterone for this to happen.” While physical appearance may differ, the guidelines and benefits of

strength training are generally the same for men and women. ParticipACTION's guidelines recommend that adults should take part in at least two days of strength training activities per week. What's more, the Ministry of Health Promotion indicates the benefits of strength training are increased bone density, prevention of osteoporosis, improved posture, and

increased lean muscle tissue which improves metabolism and reduces body fat. When it comes to creating a strength training routine, Colwell recommends women always include pushing, pulling, bending and twisting exercises in their routine. For example: Pushing exercises like chest press or push ups are great for building shoulder,

chest and back strength. Pulling manoeuvres, using a rowing machine or free weights, can create excellent posture and increase overall shoulder and back strength. Bending movements like the deadlift is one of the best overall functional strength exercises and will work your core and gluteus muscles. Twisting moves like a medicine ball twist develop oblique muscles on the side of your abs for a toned waistline. “While we all think that we are creatures of habit, our bodies crave a variety of movements,” says Colwell. “Remember to change up your routine every two to four weeks and never, ever, forget the strength training.” Push, pull, bend, twist and change it up regularly – a woman's guide to enjoying the countless benefits of strength

(NC) Here's a shocker: it's not the markets dragging down your portfolio, it's all those pesky hidden fees. A June 2015 report by Morningstar gave Canadian mutual funds a grade of D- on fees, meaning that Canadians pay the highest fees in the world. With 33 per cent of Canadian households investing in mutual funds, this adds up to a failing grade for 1/3 of Canadian investors. “Mutual funds are like a bad habit – a habit we need to break,” says John Youn, Executive Managing Director of Questrade Wealth Management. “High fees don't just impact your investment performance this year. Your returns are exponentially diminished year over year, meaning you could see a substantial long-term drag on your returns.” In the last year, an alternative to mutual funds has emerged. Online investment services match individual investors with a custom portfolio of lowcost ETFs (exchange-traded funds). ETFs are similar to mutual funds, except that they charge much lower fees. With online investment services, the portfolio of ETFs is actively managed for you by professionals. Investors get the benefit of dramatically reduced fees as well as a portfolio manager who continuously monitors and adjusts the investments, just as a wealth manager would do. To illustrate the impact of fees, Questrade Wealth Management recently began offering free portfolio assessments through its online investment service, Portfolio IQ. The service notes that an investor can save over 40 per cent in annual management fees versus a typical global balanced mutual fund (one typical investment category for mutual funds). “This is a wake-up call for Canadians, a grade of D- is not acceptable. It's time to stop overpaying for underperformance,” says Youn. To book a free portfolio assessment, visit Questrade.com/portfolio.
