Trudeau announces $1.5 billion national coastal strategy at Vancouver stop (Vancouver Sun) Premier Christy Clark praised on Monday the Trudeau government’s commitment to fund $1.5 billion for coastal protection measures, and said she’s confident her province will get the lion’s share. But Clark, who since 2012 has drawn a line in the sand declaring that any heavy oil pipeline proposals must meet conditions that include a “worldleading” safety regime, said Ottawa hasn’t yet fully met her demand. She told reporters Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement Monday meets all B.C.’s current needs in protecting the coast from a devastating spill. “There’s still a lot of work to do should Kinder Morgan be approved,” she said of the $6.8-billion project

which, if it gets approval in coming weeks, would increase the number of large tankers entering Burrard Inlet from five to 34 a month.

Clark was responding to Trudeau’s financial commitment over five years to fund a national Oceans Protection Plan aimed at ensuring “environmental

Man arrested in 2015 Surrey hit and run A Surrey man has been arrested and charged in relation to a hit and run incident last year. On April 6, 2015, at about 5:45 p.m., a Surrey RCMP officer was conducting a traffic stop in the 12600block of 92 Avenue when he heard a noise, and saw a person lying on the ground, with a silver car driving away. The officer unsuccessfully attempted to stop the vehicle, while emergency personnel helped an 85 year old man with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Aman Sanghera, 27, has now been charged with failure to stop at an accident causing bodily harm and dangerous driving. He was arrested on Nov. 3, appeared in court, and has subsequently been released pending his

next court date. “Hard work by investigators and intersection cameras helped to lead investigators to Sanghera who is

alleged to have been the driver,” said RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann. By Kevin Diakiw Surrey North Delta Leader

sustainability” and “responsible commercial use.” Trudeau made the announcement after touring the Vancouver Harbour aboard the Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the Canadian Coast Guard ship named after the former Canadian prime minister who first coined the “sunny ways” slogan adopted by Trudeau. He told a gathering at the Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Discovery facility in Stanley Park that the “historic” announcement would finally make Canada a “world leader” in marine safety, meeting or exceeding standards found in Norway and Alaska. The announcement was made as the government prepares to announce its decision, expected by Dec. 19 at the latest, on whether to approve the $6.8billion Kinder Morgan oilsands pipeline expansion. Trudeau’s announcement didn’t explicitly include many of the specific requests that Victoria has recently put forward, including three new salvage rescue tugs costing up to $50 million apiece, a new $6 million coast guard station in Prince Rupert, and funding for a maritime training centre at the B.C. Institute of Technology. The announcement also doesn’t include any reference to Trudeau’s promise to bring in a crude oil tanker ban for B.C.’s north coast. However, the federal government has insisted that campaign vow will be kept. But Clark said Ottawa’s pledge to, for instance, improve the Canadian Coast Guard’s towing capacity represents important progress. She also speculated the national plan, which also includes the Arctic and Atlantic coasts, will devote the majority of the $1.5 billion to B.C. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson welcomed the announcement and called it “a step toward rectifying the previous federal government’s decade of cuts and neglect that have put our coast at risk of major disasters.” But the new safety and environmental protections did not soften his staunch opposition to Kinder Morgan’s proposed expansion. “Even with ‘world class’ oil tanker spill response in Vancouver’s waters, a major oil spill would be absolutely devastating to our environment and economy,” Robertson said in a statement to Postmedia. “The proactive way to prevent massive impact from an oil spill on B.C.’s south coast is to not approve (the project).” First Nations opposed to heavy oil pipelines took a similar position. “We welcome improvements to oil spill clean up but at best this may help with the current threats we face, it changes nothing in regards to our opposition to drastically increase tanker traffic carrying dangerous diluted bitumen,” said Charlene Aleck, spokesperson for the Tsleil Waututh Nation Sacred Trust Initiative.

Surrey mayor lauds bus service to Abbotsford airport By Tom Zytaruk - Surrey Now SURREY — Surrey may not have its own international airport but it soon will have a dedicated bus service that can take you to one. Abbotsford International Airport (YXX), that is. Travellers will as of Monday, Nov. 14 be able to enjoy a dedicated non-stop bus service between Surrey Central SkyTrain Station and the airport through NewLeaf Travel Company Inc., a discount travel operator offering domestic flights out of Abbotsford through B.C.-based Flair Airlines. Jim Young, President of NewLeaf, laid out the plan at a press conference Wednesday at the Surrey Board of Trade office in Guildford. "Why are we at a place where there is no airport?" he asked. "Well, we want to make it as easy as possible for people to get from here to there, with a very low fare, and so today we're pleased to

announce an innovative way to connect people in Surrey and Metro Vancouver to Halifax, Hamilton, Winnipeg and Edmonton, and soon to Calgary." A 47passenger coach bus, operated by Wilson Transport Company, will pick travellers up and drop them off at the bus stop at 102nd Avenue and University Drive, outside Simon Fraser University, and transport them non-stop trip along Highway 1. "Customers may book their tickets as part of the airfare, that's the innovative part," Young said. "You can actually select Surrey to Hamilton in your travel purchase

and the bus trip is included in the fare that you pay along with the air transportation." Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner praised this new "seamless" transportation service. "We don't have to park at the airport, we can just grab the bus. "This is a very innovative solution for making travel easy for the over half a million people that live in Surrey, and those that are in Metro Vancouver," Hepner said. "I would call this, today, 'turning a new leaf' in the transportation opportunities in our city." Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun called it a "great opportunity for Surrey." Young said NewLeaf — a privately held Canadian company based in Winnipeg — offers 11 flights a week out of Abbotford. The schedule is published on gonewleaf.ca Flair Airlines Ltd. is also a Canadian airline, with operations based in Kelowna, Calgary and Hamilton, and has been flying since 2003.

Canada's politicians must resist the low road taken in the U.S. There is a tendency from the north side of the 49th parallel to watch U.S. politics — especially its protracted presidential campaigns — for tactics, innovations and political ideas that might be effectively adopted here at home. Parties and politicians left, right and centre look to those Democratic and Republican political machines for winning techniques that could translate into an edge in fundraising, getting out the vote, or even inspiring the Canadian public to buy into a leader and campaign platform. But it would be a terrible mistake for any Canadian to look south on the eve of America’s 2016 vote and see strategies worth emulating, particularly in the repugnant brand of hate, conspiracy and false claims of a stacked deck being peddled by Donald Trump’s dystopian campaign. There is only one message in all the months of toxic, divisive campaigning worth taking to heart in Canadian politics and it is a phrase coined by U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama: “When they go low, we go high. What does that mean? Obama, who first used the phrase to great effect in a speech at July’s Democratic National Convention, meant it to symbolize a difference in tone and substance between the Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump campaigns. Adapting it for a Canadian audience means that as our American neighbours sink into destructive, extreme wedge politics that is a terrifying thing to watch, our politicians and backroom organizers need to reject those tactics and chose a better path. It means parking meaningless catchphrases replicating Trump’s baseball caps that read “Make American great again. Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt drifted into that territory at his party’s recent Red Deer convention, tossing in a “Let’s make Alberta great again as an

applause line. All the empty slogans in the world won’t do a thing to get unemployed Alberta energy workers back to work or take the necessary steps to improve this province’s environmental stewardship. Anyone on this side of the border parroting words of a petulant, would-be despot needs to take a good long look in the mirror. It means expecting candidates come to the table with policies that seek to unite and eschewing those who cling to division such as Conservative MP Kellie Leitch’s pitch to screen immigrants for “anti-Canadian values or MP Steven Blaney’s Conservative leadership campaign promise to introduce a bill banning face covers such as the niqab from citizenship ceremonies or the front lines of public service. Canadians spoke to those issues in the 2015 election and handed a majority to the party with the more positive, inclusive message. Building walls — real or metaphorical — is bad public policy, even in hard times. And it means insisting our politicians to treat each other with respect, no matter their ideological differences. Premier Rachel Notley and Wildrose leader Brian Jean have modeled what this looks like at their best moments, most recently celebrating the heroes of the Fort McMurray. It can be done. Canada will inevitably feel post-election policy ripples — or tidal waves if the candidate promising to rip up every free trade agreement ever signed pulls off another shocker and wins the White House. As their northern neighbour, we can only hope the democratic institutions that have served the U.S. for 240 years withstand the stress test that seems inevitable with Tuesday’s vote. No matter who wins, Canada must keep seeking the high road. Donald Trump wins U.S. election in astonishing victory Donald Trump has been elected the next president of the United States — a remarkable showing by the celebrity businessman and political novice who upended American politics with his bombastic rhetoric. Trump rode an astonishing wave of support from voters seeking sweeping change, capitalizing on their economic anxieties, taking advantage of racial tensions and overcoming a string of sexual assault allegations on his way to the White House. His triumph over Hillary Clinton will end eight years of Democratic dominance of the White House and threatens to undo major achievements of President Barack Obama. He has pledged to act quickly to repeal Obama's landmark health-care law, revoke the nuclear agreement with Iran and rewrite important trade deals with other countries, particularly Mexico and Canada.Following his win, and a victory speech in which he pledged, "I will not let you down," Trump said in a tweet Wednesday morning: "The forgotten man and woman will never be forgotten again. We will all come together as never before." Clinton did not make a public statement until late Wednesday morning, though she called Trump early Wednesday to concede and congratulate him. Trump deserves "an open mind and a chance to lead," Clinton told a crowd of tearful, cheering supporters around midday Wednesday. "I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans," she said. "I'm sorry that we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for this country." 'We're patriots first': Obama Obama reacted to Trump's victory by inviting him to meet at the White House on Thursday. The White House says Obama called Trump from his residence in the White

House to congratulate him. White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the Thursday meeting is to discuss the presidential transition. The president also made a public statement on the White House lawn soon after Clinton spoke Wednesaday "The day after, we have to remember that we're actually all on one team," he said. "This is an intramural scrimmage. We're not Democrats first, we're not Republicans first; we are Americans first. We're patriots first. We all want what's best for this country." Obama also called Clinton early Wednesday. The White House says Obama conveyed admiration for the "strong campaign she waged throughout the country." "I could not be prouder of her," Obama said in his public remarks Wednesday. "She has lived an extraordinary life of public service. … A lot of Americans look up to her. Her candidacy and nomination was historic and sends a message to our daughters all across the country that they can achieve at the highest levels of politics." Despite losing the state-by-state electoral battle that determines the presidency, Clinton narrowly led Trump in the nationwide popular vote, according to U.S. media tallies. It marks the second time in 16 years that a Democratic candidate lost

the presidency despite winning more votes than the victor. In 2000, Democrat Al Gore got more votes than Republican George W. Bush. Trump's key to victory Trump blasted through Democrats' longstanding firewall, carrying Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, states that hadn't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since the 1980s. He needed to win nearly all of the competitive battleground states, and he did just that, claiming Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and others. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged by more than 800 points overnight, but was slightly higher when stock markets opened than it was when it closed before the polls did the day before. The TSX, meanwhile, was up 20 points to 14,676 shortly after open. A New York real estate developer who lives in a sparkling Manhattan highrise, Trump forged a striking connection with white, working class Americans who feel left behind in a changing economy and diversifying country. He cast immigration, both from Latin America and the Middle East, as the root of the problems plaguing many Americans and tapped into fears of terrorism emanating at home and abroad. -By The Associated Press

The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-by9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Some cells already contain numbers, known as givens. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Every row, every column and every 3-by-3 subgrid should contain digits 1 to 9 only.

Govt.’s scrapping of Rs. 500, 1,000 notes \New Delhi [India], Nov. 9 (ANI): Giving a thumbs to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's move to de-monitize 500 and 1000 rupee notes in a crackdown against corruption and black money, Senior lawyer and former attorney general Soli Sorabjee on Wednesday dubbed it is a very ‘bold and innovative’ decision. Speaking to ANI, Sorabjee said it is a real attempt to flush out black money from the country. “Honest tax payers have nothing to worry or worry about. This will fight black money being circulated in our country, which will eventually end terrorism as well,” he said. He further said that there might be some inconvenience for next few days but in long run this will be beneficial for all.

“It is a good move. It will help minimise corruption, of course there can't be any perfect solution to

menace black money,” he added. Defending the Prime Minister from the opposition's charges that the common man was under severe pressure and inconvenience from this development, he said, “Don't see any substance in criticism by Congress people chiefly will support this new policy of Government.” Yesterday in a surprise televised address, Prime Minister Modi said that for humanitarian reasons, for the first 72 hours, which is till midnight

on 11th November, government hospitals will continue to accept five hundred and thousand rupee notes for payment. Pharmacies in government hospitals will also accept these notes for buying medicines with doctors' prescription. Also till midnight on 11th November, railway ticket booking counters, ticket counters of government buses and airline ticket counters at airports will accept the old notes for purchase of tickets. Also at Petrol, diesel and CNG gas stations authorised by public sector oil companies Consumer co-operative stores authorised by State or Central Government, Milk booths authorised by State governments, Crematoria and burial grounds. The RBI said, 2,000 rupees note, which is a first under the denomination, will be called as the 'Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series' and has a design of the low-cost mission to Mars, the Mangalayan, on the reverse. It said, the base colour of the note will be magenta. The RBI said, the new design in the 500 rupee denomination will be in a different colour, size, theme, design and location of security features, it said. The note, will be in a stone grey colour and the predominant theme will be Delhi's Red Fort. Class action lawsuit filed in Canada against Samsung over Note 7 phones The Canadian Press Note 7 phones, which were recalled last month following reports of overheating batteries that pose a fire hazard. The lawsuit against both the U.S. and Canadian divisions of Samsung was filed in Ontario Superior Court by London, Ont.-based McKenzie Lake Lawyers, LLP. The claim alleges Samsung was negligent because they knew or should have known that the devices could harm consumers. The allegations have not been proven in court. The lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of Canadian residents who bought the Note 7, seeks damages and

a declaration that the defendants' actions were false and misleading and contravened the Consumer Protection Act and the Competition Act. The South Korean electronics giant stopped making and selling the devices and advised owners to turn

them off and stop using them last month. Samsung Electronics Canada Inc. says customers who return the phone can either exchange it for a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge, or receive a full refund. The plaintiffs in the case are Hannah Shaheen of Burlington, Ont., and Daniel Fuller, a Michigan resident in the process of moving to Burlington. While returning from their honeymoon in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the couple says they were forced to destroy and discard their Note 7 phones because they had been

banned from air transportation. They allege that in the process of destroying the devices, one caught fire. Because they had been forced to destroy the phones, Shaheen and Fuller lost all the personal information, photos, videos and contacts that were on the devices. The couple says they have not received any compensation from the company or a replacement device. "We believe that through this action, the defendants will be required to account for their actions in bringing these devices to market," lawyer Matthew Baer said in a statement. "Canadians who owned these devices deserve to be properly compensated." Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ronaldo pens ‘long-term’ sponsorship deal with Nike

Madrid [Spain], (ANI): A day after penning a mega five-year extension contract with Real Madrid, star striker Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a new sponsorship deal with Nike, the American Sportswear giant. The two multimillion mega-deals are expected to cement the 31-yearold’s status as the world's highest-paid sportsman, ahead of Barcelona rival Lionel Messi. Ecstatic to extend his long-term sponsorship with Nike, Ronaldo admitted that he has an excellent relationship with the brand. "I have an excellent relationship with this brand, I have great friends here and we work as a family. This is my brand,” the Portuguese striker was quoted as saying by the Marca. Describing Ronaldo as ‘the most famous athlete in the world’, Nike considered the Real Madrid striker to be the biggest sports star of the 21st century in the same way basketball star Michael Jordan dominated the 20th century. “He transcends the world of football, as the most famous athlete in the world and the most popular on social networks,” Nike said. The Portuguese star has had a contract with Nike since 2003 and wears its Mercurial cleats. Ronaldo, the three-time World Player of the Year, has enjoyed his most successful year at a collective level, having inspired Real Madrid to the Champions League glory before winning Euro 2016 with Portugal against host France.(ANI)

Whoa! Sultan's fame goes international Having conquered the box office with an incredible 300 plus score this year, Sultan continues to rule Hindi cinema in 2016 with multiple feats. The blockbuster has been selected for the Indian Panorama section of the 47th International Film Festival of India, 2016. Co-starring Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma, Amit Sadh and Randeep Hooda, written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, produced by Aditya Chopra. Indian cinema's official window to the world of movies, IFFI hosts the most varied and qualitative collection of interesting films for the international film fraternity and press in the Indian panorama section. This is Sultan's second outing at an international film festival after Busan International Film Festival earlier this year. A powerful story set in the heartland of rural India; Sultan has a

unique touch of optimism and equal opportunity for the male and female protagonists, revising norms of narrating mainstream cinema in India.

Director Ali Abbas Zafar said, `Sultan is the story of introspection, of the 'fight within'. As director this aspect of the story excited me. I also found it thrilling

Irrfan Khan to romance 4 women in his next! A year ago when we first heard of Irrfan being cast opposite Deepika in Piku as the romantic lead we couldn't believe it was true. But then the film came out and we all were taken by surprise to see him play such a soft and romantic character! Irrfan proved that he wasn't just meant to play dark characters but could portray romantic, soft and fun characters equally well. Since then we all have waited to see him in a similar role again. And we guess now the wait is over! Irrfan will be seen in a romantic role again. Rumour has it that this time he'll

be romancing not one not two but 4 women. Yes, that's right! He has given a nod for Tanuja Chandra's next film. A source close to the actor says, " This film is about a road trip where Irrfan discovers love. The film has four female leads and will be shot across four states! heroines are yet to finalized. that love, a universal emotion plays a pivotal role in it. That it picks a homegrown Indian sport of wrestling, and leads it to the evolution to mixed martial arts (MMA), Sultan integrates the concept of 'mitti'- son of the soil- in it's soul. It's the running metaphor between life and sultan's character. To have basket full of emotion like love, happiness, pride, fall, resurrection, redemption and finally glory was difficult but what was more difficult was to keep the story simple. Simple stories are always the most difficult to tell. than my family. Because they sponsored my family, they think my family now owes them to do whatever they want. I have tried to explain to them it’s not possible, as one of my brother has a girlfriend he loves and he wants to marry her and the other one doesn’t want to marry in India. But they refuse to listen. They keep ranting if my brothers don’t want to marry the girls, then they should do the marriage in paper only so that the girls can come to Canada. Three times in the last year and half my husband has kicked me out of the house. He told me if my family doesn’t want to have relationship with his family by helping to sponsor their relatives from India then I should just go live with my family. Each time some family friends and relatives have helped to talk to them into taking me back. I have two small kids. And I don’t know what to do. Last

time he left me with my family for two months before his family agreed that I can come home. Again, it has started. Every day or other day he fights with me. Telling me how bad my family is. I fear one of these day he will again kick me out of the house. I don’t know what to do. Helpless in Surrey Dear Helpless in Surrey: What your husband and in-laws are asking your family to do is illegal. They could all go to jail for that. I hate to say this, but I will, as I am sure you already know this anyways. You have a loser for a husband. As long as you allow him and his family to abuse you this way, they will continue to do so. Tough as it is, it’s time to put a stop to this abuse. It’s not healthy for you or your young kids. You don’t say if he physically abuses you, but I can only assume he does. Clearly, tell your husband to stop this or you will make a report to the police and tell them what they have been doing to you and your family. Next time he asks you to leave, just pack your bag and go. Don’t come back. If your family can’t help you then ask your local women’s shelter for help. Try to record or write down everything that happens to you.

If your husband beats you or makes a threat on your life, make sure you let your doctor or someone in authority know. Any injury you receive due to abuse by your husband or your in-laws make sure to file a report with your doctor, so that it’s on file. It would also help your case to collect some evidence. Whatever you do, keep yourself and your kids safe. If you have a problem talking to the doctor or police then ask a relative or family friends to help you. See if you can record their demands on a tape recorder or on a camera. This will help you in the long run, should something happen. Don’t worry about the finances. If you need to live on your own you can apply for welfare assistance. Welfare department can help you with rent and grocery. Good Luck. And keep safe.

Review:

'Shivaay'

Ajay Devgn's Diwali bonanza for his fans, "Shivaay", touted to be a thriller, in reality, is an action-packed drama that begins and remains on a languid note for much too long, making the film a slog. It is a simple, straight-forward tale of a competent, "extra-ordinary" mountaineer, Shivaay, who is bogged down by "extraordinary circumstances". He is a lonely soul, who is glorified as a superhero and compared with the likes of Superman, Batman and Spider-Man, when he battles the thugs and the police upon his daughter Gaura getting kidnapped. At the core, Shivaay is a father-daughter bonding film. While this could have been a gripping tale, "Shivaay" has all the traits of an amateurishly written script, which include; poor characterisation, "tell and show" scenes and poorly penned dialogues that become unintentionally humourous. Case in point is; in a defying moment, when the wheelchair bound, Girish Karnad, says, "Kissi ko to khadaa rehna hoga", which literally means somebody has to stand up, which he does, and instantly plops! This unwarranted action, plied with the dialogue, makes the scene seem silly. Also, when the Indian Consulate in Bulgaria, asks his employee Anu as to why she is keen to help Shivaay, the tone in which she answers, "Comics ki

duniya ke bahar bahut kam superheroes milte hain", which means, outside the comic universe you hardly see any superheroes. You chuckle when she says this because, though cliched, this is probably the only finest spoken sentence, in an otherwise mediocre set of lines. With a tattooed torso and his naturally gifted intense looks, Ajay Devgn as the gravity defying Shivaay, offers nothing that we have not seen earlier. His charm and appeal has shades of characters he has exhibited earlier. His onscreen chemistry with Erica Kaar, the free-spirited Olga seems forced and that with Sayesha Saigal who essays Anu, is non-existent. Erica and Sayesha are natural and convincing with their histrionics. But it is Abigail Eames as Shivaay's daughter Gaura, who is charming. She impresses you when she emotes with her speech disability. Girish Karnad as Anu's father and Saurabh Shukla, in miniscule roles have nothing much to offer. The antagonists, with their quirky traits are fairly interesting, but they are lost in the maze. On the directorial front, Ajay Devgn, has concentrated more on the technical brilliance than the emotional quotient. His screenplay is packed with artistically composed frames, brilliantly layered CGIs and visual effects. The film

is dazzling to view, but, with snappy edits and tight close-ups, his action sequences with jaw-dropping set pieces, seem more manufactured than real. The impact of his story telling is lost. Also, the trekking scene is very amateurishly canned. Mithoon's music seamlessly integrates into the narrative. The songs are used to propel the story forward and

the shlokas to lord Shiva are effectively used as the background score. With a runtime of two hours and fifty three minutes, don't be surprised to be hear yawns, from the audience, at regular intervals. Overall, the title, which resonates with magnetic appeal lacks conviction. -By Santa Banta News Network

Karan Johar's "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" celebrates love and heartbreak in all its hues. It is about the junoon of love and the 'sukoon' of friendship. A romance, an entertainer and a complete filmy film, this one boasts of laughter, racy dialogues, relationships, heartache and unrequited love. Ayan Sanger (Ranbir Kapoor) is pursuing his MBA in London, but is a singer at heart. Brought up without a mother, he feels alienated from his rich business tycoon father and obviously longs for love and acceptance. A chance meeting at a Soho pub with Alizeh Khan (Anushka Sharma), a bubbly, vivacious girl, who is nursing a heartbreak, and a deep bond and friendship ensues between the two. Laced with a generous dose of humour, the first half of the film is fun, light and frothy. Peppered with well written dialogues replete with Bollywood lingo, foot-tapping music with numbers like "Mere saiyyanji se aaj maine breakup kar liya", the film glides through smoothly. The pace in the second half drops distinctly, with a focus on heartbreak and one-sided love. The dialogues get verbose, poetic and at times, heavy duty. Ranbir Kapoor is Ayan Sanger from the first scene and slips into his character

effortlessly, as the boy who is deeply in love and craves for it to be requited. His childlike innocence, emotional outbursts, spontaneity and even pain, is real and endearing. He lip syncs the songs with fervour making them seem real. Anushka Sharma is the joie de vivre element of the film even though ironically she portrays a girl who has gone through the pain of a heartbreak.

She lights up the screen with her inherent energy and delivers a spirited performance. She is spontaneous and a sheer treat to watch in scenes where she relives her Bollywood dreams of singing songs in a chiffon saree and equally tugs at your heartstrings when unable to explain the depth of her feelings. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as a poetess Saba Taliyar Khan, separated from her husband, looks like a "painting" as described by Ayan in one scene in the film. "Woh ladki nahin, painting hai". Indeed, she looks beautiful but delivers a synthetic performance, extremely unreal and devoid of any emotion. Fawad Khan as DJ Ali is a disappointment as he has nothing much to offer by way of histrionics. Lisa Haydon is a treat to watch with her impeccable comic timing. Imran Abbas in a minuscule role makes his presence felt. There are a few unexpected cameos, which are bound to take you by surprise. The screenplay is divided into chapters that are interspersed with the interview of singer Ayan Sanger as the film is narrated from his point of view. The music is definitely one of the highlights of the film as are the stellar performances of Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. From the title song to "Channa meriya", each number is mellifluous and touches your heart. The film, as expected, with excellent production values and muted gloss, has a tinge of maturity to the tale and presentation. It undoubtedly has a Karan Johar flavour and is definitely a treat for his fans. By Santa Banta News Network

How do today's leading car designers get their inspiration? (NC) The bold proportions and sophisticated shapes at the heart of many contemporary vehicle designs take their cues from a range of diverse influences. Canada's highways have never before boasted such sleek, modern-looking vehicles that blur the lines between art, design, and technology — on the inside and out. While some designers cite abstract influences for their car body shape designs, many are looking to the fashion and interior furnishings industries for inspiration when creating a vehicle's interior finishes. “We are seeing a resurgence in vehicle designers taking inspiration in the way materials like leather are selected and implemented by fashion brands, explains Christopher Hilts, global director of design for Buick interiors. “This is especially true when it comes to a vehicle's interiors, instrument panel, and console, with brands seeking to replicate the attention

to detail and authenticity craved by fashion-conscious consumers. While taking cues from current trends is important, for the majority of consumers, a car is a long-term purchase decision. So designers seek to

balance trends and innovation with timeless appeal. Today's vehicle designers work closely with engineering, marketing, and manufacturing departments when developing the concept, colour, and

shape. They continue working together all the way to a vehicle's public debut — a process that often takes around 36 to 48 months. “Colours on vehicle exteriors must be sophisticated and have longevity,â€? says Krysti Murphy, lead exterior colour development designer at Buick. “Developing the right colour tone involves extensive trend research, and I seek inspiration wherever I go — in nature, from interior design, furniture‌even in shades of nail polish!â€? Popular colours this year include greens and bold blues, while oranges and bright colours with a playful 1980s or 1990s vibe have also been trending. In the world of exteriors, designers are also pushing the envelope with increasingly futuristic designs featuring sliced-and-angled layer elements. They're also responding to calls for increased efficiency in materials and fuel.

Hit the slopes in style with this ski vacation checklist (NC) If you are planning a ski vacation at one of Canada's beautiful ski resorts, there are a few things to consider. This checklist will help you get prepared for a vacation on the mountains. 1. Make sure you are prepared for a full day of skiing. Skiing is great exercise but can also be hard on the body if you haven't been stretching or getting daily exercise. To prevent sore muscles, make sure you stretch before going down the mountains. It also doesn't hurt to get on an elliptical or treadmill to warm up those legs for a couple of minutes each

day. 2. Prepare for the elements. Gloves, toques, jackets, and snow pants are essential for keeping warm on the hill, but don't forget about other key items like thick socks, sweaters, and long underwear. 3. Safety is key. Be safe on the slopes with a helmet that fits properly and goggles that shield eyes from the wind and cold. 4. Bring tasty treats. There's

nothing better than sitting around a fire with your family and friends on a cold

day drinking hot chocolate and eating s'mores. 5. Board games, cards, and books are essential post-ski day. Pack games that will bring friends and family together after a long day of skiing. Books are great if you want a quiet evening at the chalet. 6. Don't forget essential equipment, like your board, skis, and boots. If your equipment from the last few seasons isn't up to snuff this year, Sport Chek has custom ski boot fittings, some of the top service shops for equipment tune-ups, and experts to help you pick out the best gear.

5 hacks for getting a better night's sleep Give the gift of sport this holiday season (NC) With the holiday season right around the corner, it's time to start thinking about the perfect gifts for your loved ones. Below are helpful tips on sharing the gift of sport with everyone on your list. For the hockey lover. Consider a jersey of their favourite player or team. Sport Chek offers cresting in-store so you can customize any jersey. Tickets to a game are a great addition, offering not just a material gift but an amazing experience. For the fashionista. Go snow chic for the fashionista. Try a stylish padded jacket, two-tone leggings, or carbon fibre skis to help them be on-trend with this season's slope style. For the basketball buff. Sneakerheads unite — basketball fans will love the latest pair of Curry's or LeBron's. Add that to an NBA jersey and you'll score yourself an invite to the next game. For the gamer. Waiting for football season to pick up again? Gamers will love the latest Madden NFL video game. The football player on your list can practice their skills virtually until the snow subsides. For the golfer. Beginners and experts alike will enjoy a set of aerodynamic golf balls and golfing accessories like visors, gloves, and tees. Thank goodness for those heated driving ranges.

(NC) Do you ever lie awake counting how many hours of shut eye you'll get if you fall asleep this second? Well you may be in the majority — a third of Canadians sleep less than six hours a night. But even if you feel okay without a ton of sleep, you may be missing out on the adequate rest your body needs. “Getting the right amount of sleep is extremely important and is just as valuable to your health as a balanced diet and daily exercise routine,â€? explains Dr. Colleen E. Carney, professor and director of Ryerson University's sleep and depression laboratory. Give your health a boost with these five tips for a great slumber: 1. Meditate: Many people complain that their minds are racing while they're trying to sleep, with some even starting the next day's “to do listâ€? as soon as their head hits the pillow. As clichĂŠ as it sounds, try turning on a relaxing playlist, sitting on a comfy carpet and meditating for 20 minutes before hitting the hay. 2. Technology: Experts caution against bringing devices to bed, as harmful blue light can keep you awake. Fortunately, many smartphones now have a night mode setting that reduces blue light emissions. For bedtime readers, the Kobo Aura One e-reader has frontlight technology that eliminates blue light, using an easy-on-the-eyes orange tinge

instead. Now the only thing keeping you up will be that page-turner you can't put down. 3. Invest: Ever notice that some of the most luxurious sleeps happen in a fancy hotel bed? Is it the eight pillows? the Egyptian cotton sheets? the suneliminating blinds? Investing in whatever it is that makes you have a good night's sleep is definitely worth the money. 4. Exercise:

According to the National Sleep moderate intensity Foundation, exercise such as yoga, running, or aerobics can shorten the time it takes for insomnia patients to fall asleep, while also lengthening their deep sleep cycle. 5. Fuel: Eat dinner earlier so your body isn't trying to actively digest while your brain is powering down. If you get hungry, have a light snack that'll fuel your body, not one that's a recipe for indigestion.

Telehomecare: Health care anywhere

(NC) A frail 70-year-old patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) carefully gets out of bed every morning and checks his vital signs, answers questions on a computer tablet about how he's feeling and sends off the results electronically to a registered nurse (RN). The patient is a resident at LOFT Bradford House, which is part of a supportive housing network that provides services to older adults and seniors with complex medical issues, including mental health and cognitive challenges. He has increasingly been taking charge of his own care with the help of Telehomecare, a remote home monitoring and self-management coaching initiative for patients with COPD and congestive heart failure. “Most people are very engaged and interested in learning more about their own health conditions and being able to manage what they can,” says Dr. Norma Carter, a family physician who provides care to LOFT residents. “For staff and

patients, Telehomecare is really getting patients to engage in self-care.” Telehomecare has recently been introduced in a number of new settings, in addition to being widely available in the home, including assisted living, supportive housing, and retirement homes. Patients are provided with easy-touse touchscreen technology and a blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter and weight

scale, as well as lots of training. They send their vitals daily during the weekdays for monitoring by specially trained RNs who review the results daily and contact patients if there's a change in their health that needs further investigation. As well, the nurses connect with patients every week by phone to help with the skills and confidence needed to manage symptoms, medications, and lifestyle behaviours at

home. Telehomecare is a program of the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) funded by the Government of Ontario and Canada Health Infoway. There's no cost to patients or healthcare providers. The program is delivered in 10 Local Health Integration Networks in Ontario via Community Care Access Centres and hospitals. Physicians can receive regular Telehomecare progress reports about their patients, something Dr. Carter says really helps to inform care. Plus, “patients know what to watch for and now we have more productive conversations. They understand why I'm asking questions about their breathing.” Dr. Carter says it's also more comfortable for patients to receive care at home, wherever that may be. Plus, data indicates that Telehomecare helps to reduce ER visits and hospital admissions by 50 per cent. To learn more about Telehomecare, please visit www.ontariotelehomecare.ca or call 1.855.991.8191.

5 tips to help you downsize (NC) Whether you're moving to a smaller new home or looking to make your current one feel larger, freeing up usable space is always a good idea. It's even more important during the holiday season to accommodate guests and gifts. But sometimes expert help is necessary to decide what to toss and what's worth keeping. Tara Fingold, a Toronto-based interior designer, has been helping clients get the most out of their homes for over 20 years. Here are her top five recommendations for getting rid of clutter when downsizing in order to maximize your space and streamline your life:

1. Repositioning : Placing furniture in a room according to its function makes sense, but sometimes it's best to get creative and pieces in reposition traditional untraditional ways. A living room chest of drawers could serve as a nightstand and provide you with additional storage in the bedroom. 2. Books: If all your treasured books are taking up too much space, use a few favourites as décor. Place large hardcover books on a coffee table and add a decorative item on top of the stack for a true designer look. Opt for a cleaner aesthetic by removing the jackets from

used books and line shelves both vertically and horizontally, leaving room

for decorative elements like vases and candles between stacks. Save tons of space by storing books that don't fit in digital format on a Kobo eReader. 3. Multifunctional pieces: When downsizing, remember that many of your existing furniture pieces can serve more than one purpose. For example, you can combine the dining room and home office functions with a singly multipurpose table and using half of your buffet to store dinnerware and the other half to conceal paperwork. 4. Built-ins: One of the best space-saving measures is to install floor to ceiling built-ins. It may be a big investment, but it'll provide you with lots of storage and increase the value of your home. Be sure to customize the unit according to your individual needs. 5. Purging: Only keep what you use on a regular basis and what you can store. Although we tend to collect pieces over time, it's best to only keep what you need. Real estate is very costly, so be mindful to maximize every square foot.
