'Make Canada great again' flyers with anti-Muslim, anti-gay imagery alarm McGill University community Flyers posted around McGill University featuring anti-Muslim and anti-homosexual imagery, along with a call to "make Canada great again," are raising concern among students and faculty. The posters, playing on Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan, feature a maple leaf in the background and crossed-out symbols that represent Islam, communism and homosexuality. The posters include the web addresses of white supremacy sites and are signed, "brought to you by your local deplorables," a reference to a comment Hillary Clinton made about Trump supporters during the campaign. Michelle Li, a fourth-year student and a member of the Queer McGill stu-

dent group, said her first Institute for the Study of reaction when she saw a Canada, who tweeted a poster was that "somephoto of one of the body is making a very, posters, told Daybreak very distasteful attempt he believes they are part at humour." of a larger shift in the "I think it's just conpolitical conversation. firming what we all sort "I think what Trump of know in the back of has done, in America in our heads, which is that particular, is give perthere are people who mission and licence to a don't agree that I want to lot of views that used to live my life like this," she be something that across The posters have been turning up in Montreal's Milton Park neightold CBC Montreal's the board were censored bourhood near McGill University Daybreak. and not condoned," he "It's scary that they feel comfort- said. able enough to be able to put it out "Because of the porousness of the there." borders and the internet and the media 'We need to pay attention' space we all live in, it's easily transAndrew Potter, head of the McGill ferrable here, and I think that's the key

Reno Man Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy to Provide Material Support to Terrorists The U.S. Attorney's Office says a Reno man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to conspiracy to provide material support and resources to terrorists. Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Mary B. McCord, U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden for the District of Nevada and Special Agent in Charge Aaron C. Rouse for the FBI’s Las Vegas Division announced that 42-yearold Balwinder Singh of Reno pleaded guilty on Tuesday to conspiracy to provide material support and resources to terrorists knowing and intending that such support would be used to commit terrorist attacks overseas. Singh, who uses the aliases Jhaji, Happy, Possi and Baljit Singh, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Larry R. Hicks to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. He has been detained since his arrest on December 17, 2013 and was charged on Dec. 18, 2013. “Singh attempted to provide material support and resources to terrorists to create violence and disruption abroad,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General McCord. “Identifying,

thwarting and holding accountable individuals who pursue international terrorism is a top priority of the Department of Justice.” According to court filed documents and admissions made in connection with the plea agreement, between September and December 17 of 2013, Singh conspired with others to support terrorist attacks in India as part of a movement to create an independent Sikh state in the Punjab region of India. Singh is a citizen of India and permanent U.S. resident. “Today’s plea is the result of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force working proactively to disrupt terrorist attacks,”

Black employees file discrimination suit against CNN, Turner BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK, N.Y. – Current and former black employees of Time Warner, owner of Turner networks including CNN, TNT and TBS, have filed a classaction racial discrimination suit against the company. The lawsuit filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Georgia says there has been a pattern of discrimination against blacks, particularly black males, in evaluations,

compensation and promotions, at CNN, its parent Turner and Time Warner. The lawsuit says African-Americans make up 30 to 35 per cent of employees in midlevel managerial and staffing positions at Turner and CNN but are underrepresented at higher pay grades and in senior positions. The plaintiffs are seeking lost wages and other damages. CNN and Turner spokeswoman Barbara Levin said the company had no comment.

said U.S. Attorney Bogden. “National security is a top priority for the U.S. Attorney’s Office and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to locate, identify, and prosecute those who conspire and attempt to provide material support to terrorists and terrorist activities.” Authorities say Singh communicated with co-conspirators by telephone to discuss plans and agreed to provide material support by facilitating a co-conspirator’s travel to and within South Asia and providing funding and materials necessary to carry out an overseas attack. They say in October 2013, Singh and co-conspirators agreed to have one co-conspirator travel to South Asia in the fall of 2013 where the co-conspirator would travel to India and commit a terror attack with a final target determined after the co-conspirator arrived in South Asia. In November 2013, Singh purchased two sets of night vision goggles where he provided the night vision goggles to a co-conspirator in December who was going to carry out the planned attack. On Dec. 9, 2013, U.S. law enforcement prevented the coconspirator from boarding a flight from the San Francisco to Bangkok, Thailand in order to carry out the terror attack with the night vision goggles provided to him by Singh, and the planned terror attack never occurred. After these events, Singh and his co-conspirators continued to discuss and plan the terror attack in India until Singh’s arrest. “This is a strong indicator of the law enforcement community’s commitment to combating terrorism and keeping our nation safe,” said Special Agent in Charge Rouse. Department of Justice contributed to this story.

RCMP fabricated response to access-to-info request 'unacceptable:' Goodale BY THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA – Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says it’s “unacceptable” that an RCMP employee fabricated a response to an access-to-information request. Goodale says the individual involved was “at a very junior level” and has been disciplined. The fabrication was revealed last week in a letter from RCMP Supt. David Vautour to Bruce Cheadle, a reporter for The Canadian Press who in May 2015 had requested information regarding the now-defunct long-gun registry. Cheadle did not receive a response to his access request until March 1, 2016, but that letter was backdated almost five months. Vautour said a note included with the tardy response claimed that the letter had originally been sent to Cheadle in October 2015, but was returned to the RCMP by Canada Post due to an incorrect postal code. He said the Mounties have since determined that the backdated letter and the explanatory note were fabricated to avoid a possible complaint about the delay in responding to the request. “Our office does not condone actions that are contrary to the RCMP core values of honesty, integrity and professionalism,” Vautour wrote Cheadle. “We want to advise you that we have addressed this matter through a formal disciplinary process and made the Office of the Information Commissioner aware of this matter.” Goodale noted that it was the RCMP itself that discovered the fabrication and informed both Cheadle and the access-toinformation watchdog. “This behaviour is not tolerated and discipline has been delivered,” Goodale said Wednesday. Ironically, Cheadle’s original access request involved the issue of backdated legislation which retroactively absolved the RCMP of any wrongdoing when it illegally destroyed long-gun registry records even as Legault was conducting an investigation into a complaint about access to those records. Stephen Harper’s previous Conservative government passed the Ending the Long-gun Registry Act in April 2012 and then pushed the Mounties to quickly destroy the data, despite assuring Legault that the records would be preserved until her investigation was completed, as legally required. When Legault subsequently informed the government that the RCMP had committed an alleged offence, the Conservatives rewrote the law, retroactively stripping Legault of her jurisdiction over the registry records, absolving the Mounties of any wrongdoing and shutting down an active investigation into the matter which had been started by the Ontario Provincial Police.

Bacon associate facing firearms charges after Abby arrest A well-known Fraser Valley gangster is facing new charges after being arrested by gang cops this week for allegedly carrying a loaded gun. Barinder (Shrek) Dhaliwal, a close associate of the Bacon brothers and the Red Scorpion gang, has been charged with one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm, one count of possession of a prohibited loaded firearm, one count of possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, and one count of possession contrary to an order. Dhaliwal has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Abbotsford court on December 8. On Nov. 29, officers with the

Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, saw people in a vehicle that they believed to be connected to the ongoing Townline Hill conflict in Abbotsford.

Dhaliwal, 34, was a close friend of Jonathan, Jamie and Jarrod Bacon.

Those in he vehicle were “engaged in behavior consistent with drug trafficking,” CFSEU S.Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said Friday.

Postmedia News saw Dhaliwal outside a funeral service for Jonathan after he was gunned down in Kelowna in August 2011.

The vehicle was pulled over, but then tried to take off, before officers saw it again, Houghton said.

And months later, a witness at Jarrod Bacon’s cocaine conspiracy trial claimed Dhaliwal was the financier backer of a major cocaine importation scheme.

gang, members of which have been convicted in the Surrey Six slayings of 2007.

“A man was seen running from the vehicle as it again sped away. Uniformed gang enforcement team members quickly located and arrested him. A police dog was used to conduct an article search of the area and that is when a loaded 9mm handgun was discovered. The vehicle was not relocated,” Houghton said.

But he was never charged in the case. Jarrod Bacon was convicted and is serving a 14-year sentence. Police then got a warrant to search Dhaliwal’s residence in the 19800-block of 83 Avenue in Langley.

Dozens of arrests have been made so far in connection with the Townline Hill – named for the area around Townline Road where two groups involved in the drug trade have been battling since 2014.

Houghton said officers found ammunition and a small pistol “suspected of being modified to shoot .22 caliber ammunition.”

There have been more than 40 acts of violence linked to the conflict, including three fatal shootings. Like Dhaliwal, some of those involved have links to the Red Scorpion

In 2012, Abbotsford Police set up a surveillance camera outside Dhaliwal’s family home after two shootings on the street.

Indian Sikh couple gunned down in Philippines, two suspects arrested A Sikh couple from India were gunned down on Thursday by two bikeborne assailants in the Philippines’ Camarines Sur province, a media report said. Bahagwant Singh Buttar, 45 and his wife Jaswinder Kaur, 36, residents of Sipocot town in the province, were killed by two gunmen who were riding a bike, Tempo newspaper reported. The gunmen killed them on the spot, police said. Two suspects, Marvin Magdaong and Rodolfo T Gumatay, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident by the police after a chase in SitioNabuntog in Bangas Caves. The motive behind the murder was not immediately known, police said. Two pistols and live ammunition have been recovered from their possession, police said, adding that a case has been registered. There have been many attacks on Indians in the Philippines in the past. The last incident reported in August, when a 26-year-old man, who belonged to Punjab’s Phagwara and lived in Santiago city, was shot dead just a couple of months before he was scheduled to get married. Foreign buyers make up 3% of Metro Vancouver real estate sales in October • By Jeff Nagel - BC Local News Foreign buyers bought three per cent of residential properties that changed hands in Metro Vancouver in October, the latest figures from the B.C. government show. That's higher than the 1.8-per-cent rate in September, but still lower than the 13.2-per-cent rate before the province imposed a 15-per-cent tax on residential property purchased in Metro Vancouver by non-Canadian citizens or residents in August. About 140 home sales, worth about $115 million, involved foreign nationals in October in the region, according to data released Tuesday. That's out of a total of about 4,700 home sales, valued at $3.6 billion. Elsewhere in B.C., foreign buyers made up about 2.9 per cent of all residential purchases, worth a combined $129 million. Foreign buyers accounted for 0.9 per cent of sales in Surrey in October, 2.5 per cent in Vancouver, 5.9 per cent in Burnaby and 6.7 per cent in Richmond. The finance ministry has been watching to see if the Metro-only tax encourages more foreign buying in other parts of the province. The latest numbers show foreign buyers made up 6.3 per cent of transactions in the Capital Regional District. Data for the Fraser Valley was not available.

Program to attack Surrey's ‘strip’ -By Kevin Diakiw - Surrey North Delta Surrey is launching a fresh attack on the city's notorious "strip" in Whalley. A dozen RCMP officers and 4 bylaw officers will descend on the area around 135A Street and 106 Avenue to address public safety and ongoing health concerns along the strip. The officers, along with other first responders, including firefighters, will address emergency housing needs and education through outreach. “As is the case with all municipalities in the region, Surrey is facing increased challenges related to homelessness, mental health issues and Fentanyl use,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “With the City Centre Response Plan, we are taking tangible, concrete action on addressing the public safety issues that area businesses and residents are faced with on a regular basis,

while addressing the public health challenges that affect the vulnerable who are easily preyed upon and exploited.” The Surrey Outreach team is hoped to provide an integrated approach to addressing the significant public safety, public health, and quality of life issues in the area in and around 135A Street. The focus will be on protecting and assisting the vulnerable people who frequent this area as well as ensuring that others can safely live and operate their businesses in the area. “First responders have had to attend the 135A area on an increasingly frequent basis resulting in an ineffective solution which

Residential property assessments shoot up by 30-50 per cent for Lower Mainland By Katya Slepian - BC Local News Surrey-Residential home owners across the Lower Mainland could see up to a 50 per cent spike in property assessments, according to numbers released by B.C. Assessment. "Increases of 30 to 50 per cent will be typical for single-family homes in Vancouver, North Shore, Squamish, Burnaby, Tri-Cities, Richmond and Surrey," said assessor Jason Grant, noting that assessments don't directly translate to property taxes. Typical multifamily residential increases will be in the 15 to 30

per cent range. Commercial and industrial properties throughout the Greater Vancouver area will see significant but smaller increases in the 10 to 30 per cent range, with properties being purchased for eventual redevelopment often exceeding these ranges.

sees us connecting with these people briefly as a result of the call for service and then leaving,” said Chief Supt. Dwayne McDonald. “The Surrey Outreach Team seeks to change the way we approach the issues in this area with enhanced policing and a dedicated team that is here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” By providing a 24/7, visible, coordinated presence of police, bylaws and social services to help those in need in the area, the goal is to target those preying on the vulnerable, increase public safety and assist other agencies. With winter here, a key priority is to ensure that the community and service providers are aware of the Emergency Housing beds and spaces available in Surrey. The City’s recently approved Winter Shelter will create 40 new beds, while our extreme weather response program will provide an additional 95 spaces for those in need during the cold winter months. The third prong of the plan calls for continual engagement and consultation with community stakeholders to review and evaluate what is working and what can be improved on. Additional information can be found in the attached backgrounder.

We need to modernize Canada Health Act Is Dr. Brian Day right? Is there a need for increased private health care in Canada, and can it be implemented without destroying the public system? His court challenge is underway. The main issue is whether Canadians should be permitted to pay privately (directly or through insurance) for “medically necessary services already covered by their provincial health plan. Unlike Americans, Canadians can travel freely across their country covered by a universal, single-payer system that minimizes administrative costs and covers everyone – regardless of previous illnesses or changes in medications. Federal Health Minister Dr. Jane Philpott admits that “innovation is required, rather than simply increased funding to the provinces. Yet governments have put themselves in a straitjacket by paying homage to certain parts of the Canada Health Act, while ignoring others. As Ben Eisen of the Fraser Institute has emphasized, provinces have been forbidden to experiment with user-fees, copayments, etc. that would encourage individuals to use health care services more responsibly. As a result, we fail to enjoy efficiencies of Australia and many European countries. Up until last year, Ottawa clawed back nearly $10 million from Alberta, Manitoba and especially British Columbia for extra-billing. Recently Dr. Philpott threatened to penalize Quebec, as its MDs had been charging a total of $50-90 million per year for pap smears, stitches, injections, etc. Quebec then announced that it would outlaw extra-billing by January 2017. However, Quebec still refuses to comply with Section 11 of the CHA. Therefore, it does not pay host province rates to physicians on behalf of Quebec residents seeking care in other provinces. In May 1989, then Liberal Health Critic David Dingwall asked, “Why is the federal government letting Quebec get away with this violation, when it was so inflexible on the issue of extrabilling? Sadly, when he became Health Minister, he failed to act. Few Canadian physicians will now accept a Quebec medicare card, yet all federal health ministers have ignored the problem. Private MRI clinics are operating in B.C., Alberta, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan. Despite denials by politicians, a “two-tier system has always existed. Federal prisoners, members of the military and RCMP, politicians and professional athletes usually obtain more

timely care – often at private facilities. For those not in one of these special groups, it helps to be near an interprovincial border. For example, persons from Ottawa can simply drive across the river to Gatineau, Quebec, and have a private MRI scan in 48 hours for $745. This is quite legal as health is a “provincial matter. For those not living close to an interprovincial border in cities such as Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax, etc., the main option for timely care is to go to Seattle, Buffalo, Boston, etc. This provides employment to American doctors and nurses and profits to U.S. hospitals. Would it not make more sense to allow Canadians to spend their after-tax discretionary income on their own health in their own province? Waiting times for knee and hip replacements are usually many months. However, operating rooms are not functioning at full capacity due to frozen hospital global budgets. According to a 2013 survey, 15% of Canadian surgeons considered themselves under-employed and 64% cited poor access to operating rooms. Hence if orthopedic surgeons had access to additional “private operating room time, waiting times could be shortened for all Canadians. If hospitals were permitted to operate electively on Americans and other foreign patients, this would bring in extra revenue for hospitals. So that MDs did not abandon the public system, they could be required to work – perhaps 25 to 30 hours per week – in the public system in order to receive government reimbursement for malpractice insurance. Most physicians would still likely practice entirely within the public system. They deserve fair treatment. That is why Dr. Philpott should amend the CHA to make binding arbitration mandatory when provincial negations with doctors fail, as they have in Ontario. After 32 years, we need to amend and modernize the CHA. Where waiting times are excessive, certain diagnostic services and surgical procedures should allow for private access for all Canadians – not just a select few. This would maximally utilize expensive equipment and provide new employment for nurses, technicians, and surgeons. Ottawa should then enforce all sections of the CHA on all provinces and territories. Ottawa physician Dr. Charles Shaver is Chair of the Section on General Internal Medicine of the Ontario Medical Association. -CHARLES SHAVER (Vancouver Sun)

Harnarayan Singh makes English debut in NHL broadcast from Calgary Harnarayan Singh is set to make history once again Wednesday night. Already the first person to call the play-by-play of NHL games in Punjabi, the 31-year-old will become the first Sikh to broadcast in English when he joins the crew covering the Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs game at the Saddledome. "For myself growing up in southern Alberta, it was the icebreaker between my classmates and I, and that's what makes Canada so special, the diversity is celebrated and to have a person like myself be in the hockey family, it just speaks to the multiculturalism that is so great." Part of the Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi broadcast team since 2008 — covering games each Saturday night during the NHL season — Singh catapulted to fame during last year's Stanley Cup playoffs with an extended, boisterous call of an overtime goal by Pittsburgh Penguins centre Nick Bonino. "My colleagues and I, we like to bring in the characteristics of the [South Asian] community. It's a very vibrant, loud community, they love their music and their food as well, so we incorporate those characteristics in the call … that's

helped bridge cultural gaps. "I think back to when my parents immigrated to Canada in the mid-'60s and the hardships they faced," he said. "When you look at my own family heritage or my colleagues, what their families have had to go through to get to where we are now as a community, it's a night and day difference. Sometimes I refer back to the Canada Cups that were being played when [Wayne] Gretzky and [Mario] Lemieux were playing together, scoring those beautiful goals. The face of Canada has really changed from then to now, and now that we're for last Issue having these opportunities come our way, it's really reflective of the beauty of this country." Singh said he's been told the number of people from the South Asian community registering their kids in hockey is on the rise, a direct result of the success of Hockey Night in Canada Punjabi. "It's helping grow the sport," he said. "More people playing hockey, more people buying tickets, buying jerseys and The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-byparticipating in Canadian culture, so it's 9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. what that was about," he said. But don't expect similar operatic treatment for a Mark Giordano or Sean Monahan tally on Wednesday. "There are different elements in terms of Punjabi and English," said Singh. "And tonight, my role on the English side is going to be different than the playby-play. Proposed property tax increase in Vancouver to deal with opioid crisis VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With hundreds of people dying of overdoses in Vancouver and around the province, that city is considering a half per cent increase in property taxes to deal with the opioid crisis. More generally, people could see a 3.4 per cent increase to property tax and a 1.2 per cent increase in fees. NPA Councillor George Affleck feels a two per cent property tax increase would be more appropriate. “I think that it’s important that any government lives within its means and a tax increase of over five per cent to people in Vancouver is too high.” Fellow NPA Councillor Melissa De

Genova says she’ll hear out any discussion before making up her mind, but hopes if it is approved, other levels of government match that figure. “I would be asking them if the province

taxpayers in the City of Vancouver can afford and that’s not just homeowners — that cost gets passed along to renters,” adds De Genova. Vancouver’s fire chief is also asking for more resources at the department’s Downtown Eastside fire hall which has seen overdose calls increase 111 per cent when compared to last year.

Women grooming pubic hair are at higher risk of STD Washington D.C.People, especially women, who groom all pubic hair at least 11 times a year, are four times more likely to suffer from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) than those who never groomed, warns a new study. According to the findings, people, who trim their public hairs, have 80 percent higher chances of having sexually transmitted diseases.

inclusive | innovative | independent

A team of U.S. researchers found the link between grooming one’s privates and harbouring an STD is stronger in those who groom more frequently or more intensively. The study, published in the journal ‘Sexually Transmitted Infections’, sought to explore the everincreasing trend of pubic grooming, a phenomena fuelled by changing perceptions of body hair. “Pubic hair removal has become a common practice among men and women worldwide,” said study author Dr Benjamin Breyer from the University of California in San Francisco. "The media has driven adoption of new grooming patterns and

molluscum, gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, HIV, or pubic lice. But shockingly, the team found that those people who engaged in grooming of any kind had an 80 percent heightened risk of having a sexually transmitted disease, compared to those who never groomed. The intensity and frequency of grooming was also linked with a greater risk - with those in the 'high frequency' and 'extreme' categories associated with a 3.5 or 4-fold increase in likelihood of infection, especially those that arise with skinon-skin contact, like herpes.(ANI) modern society's definition of attractiveness, cleanliness and feelings of femininity or masculinity,” Breyer added. The scientists polled 14,409 people about their intimate grooming habits, the tools they used, as well as their sexual histories and STDs. The findings showed that almost 74 percent of the respondents said they had trimmed their pubic hair in the past, with more women (84

percent) than men (66 percent) engaging in the practice. The researchers found that those who groomed more often tended to be younger, more sexually active and had more annual and total lifetime sexual partners than those who groomed less often. A total of 943 respondents said they had contracted at least one of the STDs on the list - herpes, human papilloma virus (HPV), syphilis,

Lady Gaga denounces ‘celebrity and fame’

London [UK], (ANI): Lady Gaga reminded her London fans that kindness is more important than fame as she promoted her new album ‘Joanne’ on the roof of one of Britain’s biggest shopping centres. The 30-year-old singer, who has an estimated net worth of more than 250 million dollars, performed for an audience of competition winners at Westfield shopping centre in west London, where she denounced the evils of money and fame, The Guardian reports. “Money has been put on a pedestal, beauty has been put on a pedestal, celebrity has been put on a pedestal. I have travelled the world and seen the happiest people in the poorest parts of the world. Their values are intact,” she began. “In the richest homes I meet the saddest and most depressed people. With this album I wanted to remind the whole world and my fans that the most important things are love and kindness. Kindness is what will create harmony, not celebrity and not fame,” the ‘Million Reasons’ singer told the audience. ‘Joanne’ entered the UK downloads chart at number one after it was released in October.

Donald Trump is Time's person of the year Time magazine has named President-elect Donald Trump its person of the year. "It's a great honour. It means a lot," Trump said in a telephone interview on NBC's Today show. Time editor Nancy Gibbs said on the program that Democrat Hillary Clinton was the No. 2 finalist. Gibbs said the choice of Trump this year was "straightforward." "When have we ever seen a single individual who has so defied expectations, broken the rules, violated norms, beaten not one but two political parties on the way to winning an election that he entered with 100-to-1

odds against him?" Gibbs said. The Time cover reads, "Donald Trump: President of the Divided States of America" and the cover image features a photograph of the president-elect sitting in his private residence at Trump Tower. In the NBC interview, Trump took issue with the "Divided States of America" description: "I didn't divide 'em," he said. "We're going to put it back together and we're going to have a country that's very well-heeled." Gibbs said Time gives the title to the person who has had the greatest influence on events "for better or worse." Trump went from fiery underdog in the race for the GOP presidential

nomination to defeating Clinton in the Nov. 8 election. Trump won 306 electoral votes, easily enough to make him president when the electors meet on Dec. 19. Clinton won the popular vote. Hackers came 3rd Gibbs said Clinton "came closer than any woman ever has to winning the White House, and in the process revealed, I think, both the opportunities and the obstacles that women face in the public square." The No. 3 finalist for the person of the year was "The Hackers," which Gibbs said referred to "a new cyber security threat we saw this year of state-sponsored hackers looking to delegitimize an American election." She said this was "something new this year and something very disturbing." At a rally Tuesday night in Fayetteville, N.C., Trump promised to "heal our divisions and unify our country." He told the crowd: "When Americans are unified there is nothing we cannot do — nothing!" 'Dream big again' The Republican businessman largely stuck to the script — even stopped the crowd when it started to boo the media — and avoided some of the score-settling and scorched-earth rhetoric that defined his campaign and was present last week in Cincinnati. "I'm asking you to dream big again as Americans,: he said. "I'm asking you to believe in yourselves." Trump was expected to visit Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, according to a person familiar with the plans but not authorized to discuss them before they are announced.

Dear Zindagi conquers hearts across the globe With all the good reviews pouring in, seems like the Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan starrer 'Dear Zindagi', has not only conquered the domestic box office but also moved audiences on foreign shores. Breaking the traditional norms of movie making, the film is a pleasant surprise for both Indian and international audience. The film has been appreciated by cinema goers across borders for its unusual story, Gauri Shinde's distinctive vision and powerful performances by the lead actors. Not only has the film endeared movie lovers, it has also broadened the parameters thus creating a wide audience for itself. Dear Zindagi

Anushka Sharma - 'The 400 Crore Film Person' Bindass is the word that comes to mind when one thinks of Anushka Sharma - The reigning queen of Bollywood. This actress has carved her path in the industry with her intense acting, straight-forward media interaction and her style quotient. Anushka always manages to sweep us off our feet with her incredibly powerful performance and quality scripts. Having worked in huge blockbusters opposite the three Khans, Anushka still stood out in each movie

without being overshadowed and had an equally significant part to be played without just being a prop for the male superstars. She did it with SRK and repeated it with Aamir Khan in PK and completely stole the show in Sultan with Salman Khan. She's the only actress with over 400 Crore films and that is truly commendable. Anushka has had the

best year when it comes to Bollywood actors and is now working on her second home-production Phillauri and Imtiaz Ali's 'The Ring'. Anushka Sharma has made us believe in her characters, unbelievable choices and enviable energy and we hope she continues to do so in the years to come.-By Santa Banta News Network

has generated an instant connect and is being described as a perfect coming of age film that people can clearly relate themselves with. As rightly put by Meena Iyer in her Times Of India review, "Dear Zindagi holds up a mirror to Life" Pratim D Gupta also mentioned on Telegraph that, "Sometimes an awkward handshake, sometimes a big hug but never a fake air kiss. Dear Zindagi deserves love and support!" New York Times in their review also stated that " Ms Shinde's insightful movie, is a resounding victory." Recommended by cinema lovers across the globe, the film has been described as a breath of fresh air. The Gulf News review concluded "If you are looking for a heartwarming, sensitive film about troubled twenty-somethings, then make a date with Dear Zindagi." With positive reviews floating all over and a strong word-of-mouth, the magic of Dear Zindagi is expected to just further grow among the audience in the coming days.

Is Sunny Leone still struggling in Bollywood? It's been five years since actress Sunny Leone made her Bollywood debut with 'Jism 2'. Since then she has been a part of several movies. However, despite spending so much of time in the industry, Sunny feels she is still struggling to adjust in Bollywood. Talking about her journey so far, the actress stated that the moment she entered showbiz she realised that Bollywood wasn't going to change for her as far as how business is done, how things are done on sets.

However, she didn't loose her heart and went on to strive for the best in this whole new world. "I love to be here and I learn something new in every single moment in Bollywood. So that's fun," Sunny said. "As far as struggles are concerned, there is always something happening every day", she added Currently, Sunny has collaborated with New York-based start-

up escapex to launch her own app and she is quite excited about it.

Speaking about the app, she said: "I have a large number of followers. If I didn't have fan following then I wouldn't be in Bollywood. So, this is one place where we all can hang out together." "An actor's career span isn't an extensive one unless you are Amitabh Bachchan or one of the Khans. "Therefore, for me, I want to build my brand so strong that I can do anything I want to even if this ends after my very next film," she said. By Santa Banta News Network

American television actor Blaire Underwood has praised her "Quantico" co-star and actress Priyanka Chopra and says it is fascinating to work with her. "I have had a number of conversations with Priyanka Chopra about being number one on the call sheet being the star of the show. She downplays that, but she is the main protagonist, we watch the show through her eyes and her perspective, so she is very much the star of the show and she carries it with a plum," Underwood said in a statement. "She is very gracious, she is very humble, she is always prepared, she is professional she is about her business," Underwood added. The actor says he told Priyanka that she is "emotionally full". "It's always fascinating to work with her, because she trusts her emotions and if you look in her eyes there is always an emotion in her eyes without trying to do too much," he said. Underwood, who is seen playing the role of CIA officer in the show, which airs on Star World, says "what makes this show really work is that you really get into the characters". "And she sets the tone in terms of the standard of the work we are doing, the depth of the work we're doing," he added.

Dear Helpless in Surrey: Your parents story is very sad but it’s very common here in British Columbia. I have heard so many stories like your family’s. Here in Canada the amount of abuse of seniors is increasing but most of the incidents are silently suffered by the seniors, the story rarely gets out. You need to help your parents, even if you can’t take them to live in your home. You need to help your parents understand that they don’t need to live this kind of life. First of all tell them not to give their pension to anyone. That’s for them and their living expenses. If their sons and daughter-in-laws don’t want them in the house then they can either rent one of the son’s basement and move in there and pay them the rent or get a basement suite some where else. If that doesn’t work then you can get them a basement suite near your home so that they are close by and you can help them with whatever they need. There are solutions, you just need to look for those solutions. In the meantime help your parents to understand how necessary it is that they not take this kind of abuse. Good Luck.

Inspire children to give back this season (NC) While many children in our communities could be excused for thinking that people everywhere in the world experience the holiday season in much the same way we do in Canada, adults know this isn't the case. As we grow up, we learn that not all children will have the economic advantage of experiencing the joy of a holiday gift. In fact, a recent survey found that many children can't even access basic human rights such as getting an education, let alone receive a present. The Small Voices, Big Dreams survey is an international poll of more than 6,000 children in 41 countries by ChildFund Alliance, a global network of international development organizations including the Christian Children's Fund of Canada. It found that 91 per cent of children in Afghanistan say they have been forced to miss school to help their families with work obligations. Understanding that there is so much need in the world, adults also realize it's important to teach our children that the holidays are actually more about giving than getting presents. This holiday, start your children off on a journey where they will want to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Christian Children's Fund of Canada recommends the following to

help parents teach their children about the joy of giving: 1. Volunteer at a local charity. Helping others is a rewarding and eye-opening experience. Before you know it, your kids will be seeking out opportunities to take action. 2. Fundraise. Help your children explore a cause they feel passionate about and come up with creative ways to support it. This will also inspire them to become leaders for social good. 3. Support other children

around the world. By donating items from Christian Children's Fund of Canada's gift catalogue, kids learn about the

importance of going beyond our borders to help those less fortunate. Learn more at www.ccfcanada.ca.

What toys would kids pick for themselves? (NC) Take the guesswork out of shopping for the little ones on your list this season. Walmart, Canada's largest toy retailer went straight to the real experts in its fifth annual Toy Testers event, asking kids what they really want to find under the tree for 2016. “This year, toys that inspire imagination and more creative play dominate the list, says Maria Garofalo, Walmart's chief toy officer. “More than 600 families with kids aging from newborn to 12-years-old were invited to test 135 unreleased toys. Some of the top kid approved toys are: For infants to two-

year-olds, the Fisher-Price Bright Beats Learnin' Lights Dance Mat rewards movements with light, sounds, songs, music, and phrases. It also helps teach ABCs, numbers, colours, shapes, and dance moves. Three to five-year-olds loved the classic Play-Doh Town ice cream truck, which enables kids to come up with their own ice cream cone designs featuring crazy toppings. For the six to eight-year-old crowd, the clear winners were the exclusive My Life As doll and the Lego Friends Amusement Park Roller Coaster. For seven to nine-year-olds, construction sets are the way to go. Look

for the Lego Spiderman: Doc Ock's Tentacle Trap and Lego Marvel Super Hero Airport Battle, or Mega Bloks Kubros buildable pop culture figures. For ages nine and up, Lego leads with the Star Wars: Assault on Hoth, XWing Resistance Fighter, and Classic TV Series Batcave. Rounding out the list is the fastest-firing Nerf N-Strike Elite Hyperfire Dart Blaster and the remotecontrolled fun of the Tyco Terra Climber radio control vehicle, Air Hogs Razor Racer Helicopter, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles XPV Remote Control Skateboarding Mikey.

Directed by Abhinay Deo, "Force 2" is a sequel of the 2011 released "Force", but unlike its prequel which was the remake of a South Indian film, this one is an original but staid, action-packed, bleak revenge story that is generic in nature. Films have one sure way of involving us that never fails, they give us a character who has been wronged and then invite us to share his frustrations as they try to talk some sense into the blockheads. That character in "Force 2" is Rudra Pratap Singh alias Shiv Sharma, who is out to destroy the Indian intelligence agency RAW. Stopping him in his endeavour are ACP Yashwardhan aka Yash and an Intelligence Officer, Kanwaljeet Kaur aka KK. The narrative begins with a few RAW agents getting eliminated in Shanghai but Anjan Das, the head of RAW, is not perturbed. It is when Mumbai Police Inspector Yashwardhan receives a coded message in form of a gift from his deceased friend, he realises that his friend was betrayed by someone from within the agency. To avenge his friend's death and to avoid other RAW agents from getting eliminated, Yash offers his services to RAW. Anjan Das reluctantly agrees to Yash being on the mission, but not before assigning an able and efficient KK, as the team leader. The lead takes the duo to Bucharest, where majority of the

"Force 2"

propels the narrative convincingly, but unfortunately, since we Indians like our antagonist to be larger than life, he disappoints and this is not his fault. Adil Husain as the politician, Narendra Jha as Anjan Das and Boman Irani as Rudra Pratap Singh's father, in miniscule roles are effectively perfunctory. Technically the film is mounted with excellent production values. The lone song snuggly fits into the narrative.

action sequences take place. John Abraham as Yashwardhan is all beefed-up. He shines sporadically with his muscle power and he offers his punches more convincingly than his dialogues. Sonakshi Sinha is natural as the agile KK. With no deviation in her character, her on-screen chemistry with Yash, as his colleague is perfect and is probably the best part of the film. Together, they make a perfect buddy duo who bond over the investigation.

Tahir Raj Bashin is the surprise package, of the film. Understated, and ordinary in his approach, he

The chases and the action sequences are well-choreographed and they tend to be stretched at times. The climactic sequence with visuals captured by hand-held cameras and layered with loud background score gummed together in snappy edits, is an eye sore. Overall, "Force 2" offers nothing that you have not seen before, yet entertains you. It is an ideal watch for John and Sonakshi fans. By Santa Banta News Network

(NC) 'Tis the season for lavishing your loved ones with good tidings and gifts — tidings may be free but gifts come at a cost. Keeping a cap on holiday bills may be easier than you think. Follow these simple tips to help you stay on track with your holiday budget: 1. Get on the nice list. Sign up for retailer emails. Many of your favourite brands share deals and discounts via email, especially during the holiday season. Sign up to get the inside scoop on promotions and first dibs on discounts. 2. Budget your spending and bag a deal. retailers offer online exclusive products and sales. Shop online during your lunch break or even from your mobile phone on your commute home to snap up holiday sales as they happen. Have a clear budget and keep it handy for quick reference to make sure you

don't blow it on an impulse buy. 3. Look for free shipping. Many of your go-to holiday

shopping destinations offer free shipping within Canada when you make purchases over a certain amount. If you plan on sending gifts to loved ones in a

4. Don't pay for return shipping. The turkey has been carved and the gifts unwrapped. Once the tissue paper has settled, there is time for you and your loved ones to reflect on your holiday gifts. If you purchased a sweater for your dad and it doesn't fit or the game you bought for your nephew wasn't exactly what he wanted, send the gift back. PayPal's newly launched Return Shipping on Us service will foot the bill for return shipping costs on eligible items, saving you up to $30 per claim. Register here: www.paypal.ca/returns. Don't let the holidays take control of your wallet. Become a bargain hunter, shop at your convenience, and hit the shops ahead of the crowds to take advantage of deals this season.

Five tips to throw the greenest holiday bash NC) The holiday season brings a houseful of food, gifts, and guests. This year, when making your to do list and checking it twice, be sure to include these quick tips from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation to make your party a green and affordable one. 1. DIY DĂŠcor: Spruce up your dĂŠcor with nature-

Dim the lights: Turn down the chandeliers and lamps and string a few LED holiday lights across the dining room to save energy

and create a soft glow reminiscent of your favourite fireside cafĂŠ. 5. Get out your fancy china: Clean up can be a daunting task, but consider using your reusable plates and cutlery and pass on wasteful plastic products. 5 tips to keep your family active this winter NC) While it's tempting to stay bundled up under blankets and in front of a screen during the colder seasons, it's important to make sure you and your family are still getting the daily minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity to keep minds and bodies healthy. Here are five tips to keep your brood active this winter. 1. Don't be afraid of snow. Winter has some great outdoor sports that are fun for everyone. Skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing are great activities that are family-focused and keep heart rates up. 2. Consider indoor play areas and gyms. Check out your local community centre to see if there are any indoor activities. Many centres have swimming pools, climbing walls, and open gym times to play a fun game of basketball, badminton, or dodgeball. 3. Lace up those skates. Outdoor skating rinks are exciting for young and old alike. Bring the hockey sticks and pucks and practice your skills on the ice. 4. Create a snow family. Fresh snow on the ground means it's the perfect time to start building those snow people. Rolling large balls of snow will keep bodies moving and the little ones will love being creative when decorating the face. 5. Take a winter hike. Canada is full of beautiful scenery that looks magical when its dusted with snow. Take the kids outside on a hike that lets them learn about our geography and keeps them active.

How to teach your teen driver the rules of the road

(NC) The time for your teen to get their license can be both exciting and scary. While there's no guide on raising teens, there are many great ways to prepare them for the responsibility of driving. Here are four questions to talk over with them before they hit the road. What will you do if you get a text or a phone call? If they say read it at a red light, take the keys away now. Phones should always be kept hidden away unless the car is parked in a safe area or you've arrived at your destination. While we're on the topic of distracted driving, remind your teen to keep the stereo at a reasonable level so that they can hear oncoming emergency vehicles or skidding cars. How will you react during splitsecond decisions? There are countless movies about fast and furious cars. But what teens don't take into account is that they're hard-wired to take more risks. When confronted with risky choices, teen brains exhibit more activity in the impulse area than an adult's, which on the road can lead to some dangerous decisions. Remind your teen to play it safe and take their time. What do you do if you get in an accident? While accidents can make you rattled, it's important to stay calm. Accidents happen — in fact, teen

drivers are 50 per cent more likely to be involved in a crash within the first month of their solo driving career. Get out of the car if it's safe to do so to assess the scene and gather information. It's important to get names, addresses, phone numbers, licence plates, and insurance provider information. How are you going to pay for car insurance? Make sure you discuss with your teen how they plan on paying their car insurance. This can become a big cost for teenagers, but luckily many

insurance providers such as belairdirect provide affordable rates for students. Give them a call to figure out what coverage is best suited to your specific needs. It takes a lot of patience and practice before one can master the pavement. Above all else, remind your teenager to drive like they own the car, not like they own the road (even if they don't technically own the car). For more driving and car safety tips, encourage your teen to visit belairdirect.com.

7 air travel tips for a trouble-free holiday (NC) Lost baggage, flight delays, bumped from your flight? Unfortunately, air travel can sometimes be stressful and unexpected things can happen. If you're planning on travelling during this busy season, follow these tips to help lower your stress: 1. Call ahead if you have special requests. If you are carrying sports equipment or musical instruments, have dietary restrictions or special needs, you want to call the airline at least 48 hours in advance to make sure they can accommodate your requests. 2. Make sure you have all your travel documents. It is your responsibility to have the proper documents to enter a foreign country and to return to Canada. Ensure you have the appropriate visas (if required) for the duration of your trip as soon as possible — ideally when you book your tickets. Ensure your passport remains valid for your trip. Expiration dates may vary. Contact your airline or your Consular

office ahead of time. 3. Double check your flight's status. Confirm your flight in advance by checking your flight's status at least a day before departure and again just before leaving for the airport. 4. Know your airline's baggage limits and fees. There are different limits for carry-on and checked

baggage and possibly extra fees. You want to know what these are to avoid delays or costs at the airport. 5. Pack smart. Always include your contact information and your destination contact information inside each piece of checked baggage. This helps identify baggage if any outside tag is damaged or lost. Always keep essential

and valuable items with you on board, such as your passport, identification and return tickets, medicines and medical devices, money, jewellery, electronic equipment, and essential overnight items. 6. Check in early. If available, check in online up to 24 hours in advance. This can help avoid problems with overbooking by the airline and you missing your flight. 7. Read the fine print. When you buy your ticket from the airline, it comes with terms and conditions. Make sure you know what to expect if your flight is delayed, your luggage is lost, or you experience any other problems by reading your airline's terms and conditions. Bonus tip: If you do experience a problem while flying, you can file a complaint with the Canadian Transportation Agency. Their job is to help resolve complaints between passengers and airlines. Find more information online at cta.gc.ca/air-travelcomplaints.

3. Don't forget self-care. Little ones look to the grown-ups around them for behavioural cues, so chances are good that if you're happy, they will be too. So breathe, get enough sleep, arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare, and enlist help when needed. 4. Plan for the worst. Kids, especially first-time flyers, are susceptible to nerves and possibly ear pain when flying. Check with their doctor to make sure you have any medication they may need, including anti-nausea and pain meds. Keeping a positive attitude and explaining what's happening in kid-friendly terms will go a long way to keeping any anxiety at bay. 5. Know where to turn for help. Keep important contact numbers on hand for easy reference. If you experience an air travel problem such as a flight delay or lost baggage, you can file a complaint with the Canadian Transportation Agency. Their job is to help resolve complaints between passengers and airlines. Submitting a complaint is easy to do online at cta.gc.ca/airtravel-complaints, by email at info@otc-cta.gc.ca, or by calling 1888-222-2592.
