B.C. air ambulances barred from landing at 7 hospitals Air ambulance services to seven hospitals on the South Coast and Vancouver Island have been suspended and likely won't be restored for about two more days, according to the company that provides the service. The air ambulances have not landed since last Friday after Transport Canada informed Helijet, the carrier contracted to provide air ambulance services to several B.C hospitals, that it's not complying with federal landing regulations at some hospital landing pads. As a result, Helijet withdrew its services from several hospitals including Vancouver General Hospital, Royal Columbian Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Nanaimo General and B.C. Children's Hospital. Rick Hill, Helijet's vice president, commercial and business programs, described the problem as an "administrative" issue that it is addressing. And it has applied to Transport Canada for a temporary exemption that

will allow it to continue to land at socalled H-1 helipads, which have the most restrictive rules. That exemption won't solve the issue, Hill said, but it will give Helijet time to sort out the matter with Transport Canada and the manufacturer. The air ambulances are made in the U.S. by Sikorsky. Hill said he expects to get the exemption in about 48 hours. But in the meantime, seven B.C. hos-

pitals don't have air ambulance services. "This is not an optimal situation," said Jodi Jensen, chief operating officer for B.C. Emergency Health Services, "Our preference obviously is, when you have a seriously ill or injured patients, that you want to be able to transport them to the receiving facilities as quickly as possible." Gayle Duteil, president of the B.C. Nurses Union, also expressed concern about the suspension of air ambulance

services at some B.C. hospitals. The air ambulances are "a very major part of our patient transport system," Duteil said, adding, "but we also need to ensure that the patients and the staff are safe." Transport Canada did not respond to an interview request. But a spokesperson said in an email that the issue is about the safety of air ambulance landing sites. Sau Sau Liu said Transport Canada could not comment on Helijet's exemption application. Jensen said with air ambulance services out at some hospitals, patients are flown to a nearby airport, then driven by ambulance to hospital. Paramedics trained to treat critically ill people are with the patients the whole time. The landing issue for the Helijet air ambulances was first noted last spring by a routine Transport Canada inspection, Hill said. By Jane Armstrong, CBC News

Bank robbery Ministry reviews case of girl, 15, who suffered heat exhaustion in car suspect wanted he Ministry of Children and Family Development is reviewing the case of a 15-year-old girl with disabilities who suffered heat exhaustion after she was left in the back of a hot car for as long as an hour, police say. The incident happened Sunday at a parking lot at the Abbotsford Air Show. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian Macdonald said a passerby noticed the teen who appeared to be suffering from heat exhaustion. The woman flagged down a nearby officer who was on a bicycle. The officer was poised to break open the window to rescue the teen when the girl's parents arrived and opened the car. Macdonald said.. He said an ambulance was called

and the teen was treated for dehydration and heat exhaustion. Window opened just a crack, say police Investigators say one window was open about five centimetres in 27 C heat. "That was the temperature outside the vehicle," Macdonald said. "You can only imagine the temperature inside the

vehicle would have been amplified." Abbotsford police say they see a spike in similar cases when temperatures soar. They also see an increase in the number of drownings and incidents involving children falling out of windows of multistorey buildings. On Saturday, a toddler was taken to hospital after falling through the window of a threestorey building in Abbotsford. "We ask that people going into this weekend be super conscious of the fact that if they're near water in hot conditions, in a vehicle or if they're trying to vent their homes, be mindful of those categories," said Macdonald. -By Farrah Merali, CBC News

Phone scammer poses as police officer calling about immigration issues The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is warning the public about a phone scam in which the caller poses as a police officer and claims there are immigration issues with the family receiving the call. Const. Ian MacDonald said police received four complaints about the calls on Monday. The fraudster, who appears to be targeting the South Asian community, used calller ID “spoofing” to display the APD phone number (604-859-5225). In one of the incidents, he identified himself as “Steve Miller” and said that when the family had immigrated several years ago, they failed to fill out the proper paperwork. He suggested they would be deported if they didn’t co-operate. The caller then asked for the names and

birth dates of family members. In all four cases, those receiving the calls became suspicious and hung up on the fraudster. Investigators believe the man was trying to gather personal information to obtain money through credit cards or wire transfers from the victims.

MacDonald said the fraud uses a commonly employed theme where an individual is in trouble with the authorities and the remedy is to provide information and money to resolve the issue. “We ask that the public become familiar with this theme and to make direct contact with the police or government agencies to determine the legitimacy of the communication,” he said. MacDonald said individuals should never provide credit card information, initiate a wire transfer or purchase gift cards to resolve an issue that any anonymous caller provides. Anyone with information about the most recent fraudulent calls should contact the APD at 604-859-5225 or text 222973 (abbypd).

SURREY — A photo of an alleged robbery suspect was distributed by Surrey RCMP on Friday. They're asking for the public’s assistance to identify the man, whose image was captured by surveillance cameras. On Wednesday (Aug. 10) at around 3:50 p.m., police received a report of a bank robbery near the intersection of 120th Street and Nordel Way. The suspect produced a weapon and threatened staff before fleeing the scene, police say. Nobody was hurt during the incident. Surrey RCMP's robbery unit obtained the surveillance photo seen above. The suspect is described as a South Asian male in his early 20s, with a thin build. He was wearing a black and red jacket with white stripes and "West Coast Selects FC" on the upper left chest. “Institutional robberies are not victimless crimes,” said Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann. “It can be a very traumatic incident for anyone involved. Protecting the employees and customers is a priority for police, and by identifying this suspect we can improve safety for all.” Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.

Free junk drop off in Surrey Surrey has launched a free drop off site for large household waste, in an effort to cut huge clean up costs in this city. Last year, Surrey taxpayers spent almost $1 million in cleaning up after illegal dumpers, almost double what it cost a decade before. Surrey has launched several programs to stop the financial bleed, including enforcement, but costs keep climbing. "A major contributing factor leading to illegal dumping is the high cost of disposal fees at regional transfer stations, combined with the lack of convenience relating to the location of these facilities," Surrey's General Manager of Engineering wrote in a report to council. In July, Surrey started "Pop-up Junk Drop" events at the city's works yard, at 6651 148 St. The coming events will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the city's works yard on Aug. 27, Sept. 17 and Oct. 1.

Regina officer's appeal on assault conviction The Supreme Court of Canada dismissed a Regina police officer's appeal to overturn an assault conviction from 2014. Const. Robert Kenneth Power was found guilty of assault causing bodily harm following an incident involving Edward Stonechild in May 2012. In 2012, Const. Power was captured on a security camera downtown where the officer push-kicked Stonechild just outside a Regina detox centre, knocking him back and causing his head to bounce off a cement wall. Power was dismissed from the Regina Police Service following the conviction, however the dismissal was reviewed and it was determined that Power should keep his job but go through a probationary period and additional training. Meanwhile the court case was reviewed by a Queen's Bench judge who overturned the conviction but then the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal restored the conviction. That led Const. Power to seek an appeal from the SCC, which on Thursday, the SCC said they refused to hear the appeal, so the conviction stands. -By CBC News

Bomb attacks kill seven, wound 224 in southeast Turkey

Documents from the Hillary Clinton email investigation might be made public A “substantial amount” of material that the FBI delivered to Congress about the Hillary Clinton email investigation — including a summary of agents’ interview with top aide Huma Abedin — appears to be unclassified, which means it could possibly be released to the public. Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Charles E. Grassley is calling for Senate officials to separate the classified from the unclassified documents in order to turn over as much information to the public as possible. Grassley (R-Iowa) said Wednesday that many of the FBI documents appear to be unclassified or are specifically marked as such. He requested that the director of the Office of Senate Security identify and separate the unclassified material so that it might ultimately be released. “If it isn’t classified, it ought to be public,” Grassley said in an interview. It is unclear how soon that might happen. Grassley said it might take a significant amount of time to separate classified from unclassified material. Among the materials the FBI turned over to lawmakers on Tuesday were a 32-page summary of its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state; interview summaries — known as “302s” — with Clinton, Abedin and others; and copies of classified emails that were recovered

05

from the server, according to federal law enforcement officials and Grassley. Right now, the materials are only able to be reviewed by members of Congress in what’s known as a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF), and the FBI issued a statement saying they were being provided with the expectation such material would “not be disseminated or disclosed without FBI concurrence.” The public release of many of the documents in the FBI’s probe into Clinton’s use of a private email server would be significant, offering prospective voters an even more thorough look into the criminal investigation that has long dogged the Democratic presidential nominee. While FBI Director James B. Comey has said publicly his investigators concluded neither Clinton nor her aides should face criminal charges because of the server, he has also called her conduct “extremely careless” and suggested those who acted as she did might face severe professional consequences. -BY The Washington Post

Two bomb attacks blamed on Kurdish militants killed seven members of the security forces and wounded 224 people in southeast Turkey on Thursday, officials and security sources said, in a renewed escalation of violence across the region. A car bomb ripped through a police station in the city of Elazig at 9:20 a.m. (0620 GMT) as officers arrived for work. Three police officers were killed and 217 people were wounded, 85 of them police officers, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said. Offices in the police station were left in ruins and filled with smoke after the bomb exploded in front of the complex, destroying part of the facade, CNN Turk footage showed. Less than four hours later, a roadside bomb believed to have been planted by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants tore through a military vehicle in the Hizan district of Bitlis province, security sources said. They said the blast killed three soldiers and a member of the state-

sponsored village guard militia and wounded another seven soldiers. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the bombings, but Yildirim said there was no doubt they were carried out by the PKK, deemed a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. "The (PKK) terror group has lost its chain of command. Its elements inside (Turkey) are carrying out suicide attacks randomly wherever they get the opportunity," Yildirim told reporters in Elazig. "We have raised the state of alarm to a higher level," he said at the scene of the attack, where a crowd chanted "Damn the PKK!" The PKK has carried out dozens of attacks on police and military posts since 2015 in the largely Kurdish southeast in its fight for greater autonomy for Turkey's 15 million Kurds. Elazig, a conservative province that votes in large numbers for the ruling AK Party, had been spared violence until now. -BY Ihlas News Agency/Reuters

Guest Editorial National Trucking Week 2016: Heavy Trucks & their Drivers Deserve a "Brake" By Louise Yako, President & CEO

technology after firsthand experience with an Indiana truck on a 35-mile downhill section of the original US 66 Highway in California, shot wheel brakes, and a near-collision with a freight train in 1931. He wasn’t even dealing with the sleek, aerodynamic profile of modern-day trucks. The problem with engine brakes for the public can be the annoyance factor. Noisier versions are the reason why many communities have noise by-laws prohibiting the use (or “unnecessary use) of engine brakes within residential areas. City driving rarely requires the use of brakes designed for steep downhill grades.

You can’t work in the trucking industry for long without realizing the interconnectedness of the trucking world – goods with communities, roads with ports, airports, and railways, regulations across international and provincial borders and municipal boundaries, you name it. Another connection may not be immediately apparent: National Trucking Week and

Not all engine brakes are that noisy, however, especially on newer trucks (or trucks with new or higher end mufflers installed) and on trucks that are properly maintained. For example, the level of noise for a heavy truck with a better quality muffler is 80 to 83 decibels from 15 metres away, similar to a telephone dial tone.

A really loud exhaust system is

potentially cause for an inspection, since the muffler could be

“jake brakes. National Trucking Week celebrates the efficient and largely unobtrusive work men and women in the industry undertake daily to provide us all with essentials year round. Few businesses or communities would survive without them. Jake brakes, a nickname for engine brakes, are used on heavy trucks to slow the vehicle down using engine compression. Engine brakes are also extremely efficient but may not be so unobtrusive, especially when not properly muffled. The connection between the two isn’t about noise – festivals and fireworks and loud bangs from brakes – it’s about safety. Engine brakes work by switching the engine from producing power to absorbing power through air compression and release via the truck’s exhaust system. The sudden release of pressure is the source of the loud, characteristic “rat-a-tat sound when the brake is in use. Commercial vehicles also have wheel service brakes, but engine brakes are purpose-built to control the speed of a heavy vehicle on downhill grades, whereas service brakes are more useful for sudden emergency stops. Using engine brakes keeps the service brakes in reserve and in good shape for

defective or has been tampered with. The noise level for a truck without a muffler rises to 96 to 101 decibels, similar to a chainsaw. At this level, it makes sense to focus on individual trucks with problems rather than prohibiting the use of brakes. Which brings me back to National Trucking Week. Canada celebrates the trucking industry this year from September 4 to 10. Take a moment this week to think about all the trucks and their drivers travelling highways in BC and beyond, leaving on time, arriving on time, transporting groceries and all manner of goods safely to stores and distribution centres and, in the bigger picture, many of the resources that BC and Canada trade with the rest of the world. The vast majority of truck drivers do this safely and responsibly, including using their engine brakes for what they were designed to do. BCTA, a member-based, non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization, is the recognised voice of the provincial motor carrier industry, representing over 1,200 truck and motor coach fleets and over 250 suppliers to the industry. BCTA members operate over 13,000 vehicles, employ 26,000 people, and

when they are needed. To ensure safe operation on highways with long, steep

grades, truck drivers are required to check their brakes before proceeding downhill and will also shift gears to slow down their progress. Modern engine brakes are an important safety feature on commercial trucks, which can easily weigh from 40,700 kg and up when loaded, and some engine brakes are even capable of absorbing more power than the truck engine can produce.

Hefner's Neighbor Just Bought the Playboy Mansion for More Than $100 Million The Playboy Mansion is about to get a brand-new owner. E! News can confirm the Los Angeles landmark has found a buyer just a few months after it was put on the market for a whopping $200 million. "We can confirm that the Playboy Mansion is in escrow with Daren Metropoulos as the buyer," Playboy said in a statement to E! News. "Due to confidentiality restrictions, we are not able to comment on any specifics, including what contingencies need to be cleared to close the sale." While an official price tag hasn't been confirmed, multiple outlets confirm the final offer came in at more than $100 million. So, what does one get for such a hefty price tag? For starters, the new owner can call the property spanning five rolling acres in the Holmby Hills his own. At the same time, Hugh Hefner himself will remain in the mansion until he passes away. The 20,000 square foot residence is also described as an "ultraprivate retreat and the ultimate setting for large-scale entertaining." And with 29 rooms, a home theater, swimming pool and an additional four-bedroom guest house, there is plenty of space for guests and visitors.

"This is the right time to seek a buyer for this incredible property who understands the role the Mansion has played for our brand and enables us to continue to reinvest in the transformation of our business," Playboy Enterprises CEO Scott Flanders said in a statement to E! News when the house was first put on the market. "The Playboy Mansion has been a creative center for Hef as his residence and workplace for the past 40 years, as it will continue to be if the property is

sold." And for those wondering who this lucky owner could be, Daren is principal at the private equity firm Metropoulos & Co., which just so happens to own Twinkies-maker Hostess Brand. "The heritage of this property transcends its celebrity, and to have the opportunity to serve as its steward would be a true privilege," Daren shared with The Wall Street Journal. First husband of British-Pakistani woman confesses of murdering her

Jhelum (Pakistan), (ANI): The first husband of a BritishPakistani woman who was strangled to death last month on Saturday confessed of killing her. Mohammad Shakeel confessed to the police of killing Samia Shahid by strangling her to death with her own dupatta, reports the Express Tribune. Reports suggest that a local court in Jhelum rejected Shakeel’s bail application while directing the police to arrest and present him before the court. 28-year old Samia, from Bradford, was killed while visiting her family in northern Punjab last month. Samia’s second husband, Mukhtar Syed Kazam, said he believed his wife was killed

because her family disapproved of their marriage. He also alleged that Samia was tricked into travelling to Pakistan over claims that her father was ill. Kazam, in his police complaint said his wife Samia was murdered during a visit to her family on July 20. He described his wife’s death as an “honour killing”, a practice which has escalated in the country where a relative is murdered for bringing what is deemed dishonour to the family. Earlier, the victim’s father denied the charge and claimed his daughter died of natural causes. Last week, at an emotional press conference, Kazam presented a copy of a post-mortem report which said that his wife had marks on her neck, suggesting she had been strangled. The Police said the forensic report confirmed Samia’s dead as an unnatural one. (ANI

Pro-exercise people experience better benefits from exercise: Study London, (ANI): A recent study reveals that people, who are enthusiastic about working out and believe that exercise is good for them derive more benefits from it than those with lower expectations. In a survey study, researchers in Germany established that people convinced of the health benefits of cycling enjoyed the exercise more and were more relaxed than cynics, reports The Independent. As part of research, the psychologists asked 76 people aged from 18-32 to exercise on a stationary bicycle for 30 minutes. Their expectations regarding the outcome of the exercise had been taken beforehand and post session they were asked to fill a questionnaire about their experience and state of mood. They also noted the participants’ brain activity with an electroencephalogram (EEG). The findings showed that those who were convinced with the benefits of cycling before starting had a better physical and mental experience and found that their anxiety level was also reduced. The EEG also vouched that participants, who had higher expectations appeared to be more relaxed. Some of them were shown a video praising the positive effects of cycling ahead of the session. These participants experienced similar benefits to those who already intuitively believed in the health benefits of exercise. Hendrik Mothes, the lead researcher, said: “The results demonstrate that our belief in how much we will benefit from physical activity has a considerable effect on our well-being in the manner of a selffulfilling prophecy.” (ANI)

Decrease in smoking related to stroke? Washington D.C., (ANI): Looks like Finland’s national tobacco policies have radically reduced the incidences of subarachnoid haemorrhage, the most fatal form of stroke. Previously, it was thought that in Finland approximately a thousand people suffer subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) every year - most of them adults of working age. Up to half of those afflicted die within a year. Subarachnoid haemorrhage is typically caused by a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, which leads to a sudden increase in the intracranial pressure. Smoking is a key risk factor for SAH. A University of Helsinki study

looked at changes in the incidences of subarachnoid haemorrhage over a period of 15 years (1998-2012) and these were contrasted with changes in the prevalence of smoking. The results indicated that the number of people afflicted with SAH was nearly half of the previously assumed figure and that the number was in rapid decline, a trend which was particularly apparent in younger generations. Within fifteen years, the prevalence of SAH had decreased by 45 percent among women and 38 percent among men under 50 years of age. During the same period, the prevalence of SAH decreased by 16 percent among women and 26 percent

among men over 50. Smoking among Finns aged 15-64 decreased by 30 percent during the monitoring period. "It is extraordinary for the incidence of any cardiovascular disease to decrease so rapidly at the population level in such a short time,"

said researcher Jaakko Kaprio from the University of Helsinki. "Even though we cannot demonstrate a direct causation in nation-wide studies, it is highly likely that the national tobacco policies in Finland have contributed to the decline in the incidence of this type of severe brain haemorrhage,” he added. Cerebral aneurysms are present in up to more than 10 percent of people over the age of 70, but most of them never rupture. For decades, the researchers have been searching for factors, which could be used to identify persons at high risk of aneurysm ruptures and who should consequently be treated. "Previous studies have indicated that smoking is one of the most important susceptibility factors for rupturing aneurysms, so in that sense the now established connection between a decrease in smoking and a decrease in SAH is not surprising," said another researcher Miikka Korja. This study has been published in Neurology. (ANI)

Tyrese Gibson backs Vin Diesel

WashingtonD.C, (ANI): Grammynominated singer Tyrese Gibson is leaving no stone unturned to back Vin Diesel in the alleged feud with Dwayne Johnson. The support came shortly after ‘The Rock’ called out some of his male co-stars as “chicken (shit)” and “candy-ass” on the sets of ‘Fast 8’. The target of his rant was reportedly Diesel, reports the People magazine. The 37-year-old ‘Furious 7’ star posted an elaborate message along with two pictures of himself along with Diesel. “Spreading love always..... without saying I've had too many moments to counts, too many heart too hearts, we've celebrated in too many countries, too many exchanges, too many play dates with our angels. Our brotherhood and every moment has inspired me to be a better man and father,” he wrote. “So much strength to pull from..... I'm so (fucking) proud to call you my family and my brother,” he added. The second photo had both of them on the red carpet, with Diesel wrapping his arm around Gibson. Gibson has been with the franchise since its first sequel and has worked with Diesel in four of the films. (ANI)

Want to take small but substantial parts for comeback: Akshay Akshaye Khanna, dishoom, Akshaye Khanna dishoom, Akshaye Khanna movies Akshaye Khanna has returned to the big screen after four years with a role in Dishoom. Actor Akshaye Khanna, who has returned to the big screen after four years with a role in Dishoom, says he is looking at doing small parts in a few films for now. He says he chose to feature in Dishoom, which stars John Abraham, Varun Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandes, as he really liked the script and as it was an interesting concept. `The role really excited me and we had a great cast. Since I had taken such a long break, the first three to four films... I wanted to do substantial roles but smaller parts just to get back into the rhythm,` Akshaye told IANS here. Directed by Rohit Dhawan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Eros International Media Ltd, Dishoom released on Friday. Akshaye, son of veteran actor Vinod Khanna, said he was also approached for a role in Season 2 of 24. `Anil Kapoor wanted me to do a small part,

However, he is impressed the way Anil has managed to make 24 despite the budget constraints in India. `Initially, he (Anil) told me he has got the rights of 24, but I was a little skeptical, because if you see the American show... It's so big and their production value is so huge. `I know our TV budgets in India cannot support and afford that kind of production value. Besides, the writing is so good there. So, I wondered if we can really adapt it without compromising on the quality. `But when I saw the first season of 24, I was really impressed because I know the kind of budgets they are working on. Kangana looking forward to Ritesh Batra's film By Santa Banta News Network Actress Kangana Ranaut will reportedly do Ritesh Batra's film next year. She is said to have "loved the script" narrated by "The Lunchbox" fame director. According to a source close to the actress, Kangana will do Batra's film in March after she wraps up her mega project "Jhansi Ki Rani". "She loved the script that Ritesh narrated to her and is really looking forward to it," added the source. There are also reports that she will

be seen with actor Irrfan Khan in the film though the actor recently said that he has had no discussion with Batra or Kangana about joining hands with them for a film. When asked whether she will do the film if Irrfan also joins the cast of the project, the source said she is "really excited about the script and she doesn't get into casting decisions". "She would rather leave them to her directors," said the source. The two actors were last seen in Anurag Basu's 2007 film "Life in a... Metro".

Ranveer Singh: How Befikre actor is changing rules of stardom Once upon a time in 'Bollywood' you could find a direct connection between people and the films they were praying to succeed or fail. And, then Ranveer Singh happened. Unlike stars of yore that would surreptitiously pop champagne when the competition failed at the box office or look through fellow stars in public, Ranveer Singh openly promotes the films that he isn't a part of, or stars that he might not be known to be friends with. A few weeks ago he featured in a video showing his love for Salman Khan's Sultan (2016) by dancing in a cinema hall in Paris while watching the

film. Now, Singh professes his love for Akshay Kumar's upcoming Rustom (2016) in a videowhere he is dressed like Kumar's character from the film and calls himself 'Chuppa Rustom' and even breaks into a jig to the older actor's hit 'Zehar hai ki play hai tera chumma' fromSabse Bada Khiladi (1995) playing in the background. With such videos and news of him prancing around in a silver jacket that repels paparazzi's flashes in the night, Ranveer is a welcome departure from not only how one looked at a star - but also how a star is expected to behave. Unlike many young stars, Ranveer Singh doesn't appear to take stardom

too seriously. That doesn't mean he's not interested in it or doesn't work hard to attain it but the difference lies in what he is doing with his popularity. Apart from his histrionics that even with a relatively small filmography hardly leave any doubt about his talent, antics such as photo bombing, posting videos,

Look what Akki has to say about Rustom? Actor Akshay Kumar says that the subject of his upcoming film 'Rustom' will be loved by women and also save marriages and stop divorces. "It is a different subject, it is based on real-life stories and it is the first time somebody is playing a Parsi Navy officer, neither has anybody played a Parsi main lead or an officer's role," actor said. When asked what one thing he would like to take back from the film, he said, "I am going to take my uniform. And I am not only going to take back, on the contrary, this film is going to give, it is going to save a lot of marriages and is going to stop people from taking divorce, you invest so much into a relationship, so this film is going to tell you what goes into it." The film is based on the theme of

infidelity and extra-marital relationships, when Akshay Kumar's character finds his wife cheating on him and then apparently kills her lover, leading to a court case, public sympathy and media trial on proving his guilt or innocence in the matter. The film is based on the 1959 case of a naval officer

K. M. Nanavati and the murder of his wife's lover. The film has received support from the industry with Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonam Kapoor and Karan Johar all making special videos on social media. Akshay said, "It's great when the industry supports you and I'm very thankful to Salman for starting this and also to Ranveer, Sonakshi, Karan Johar, Sonam." It is nice to see the whole fraternity coming together and doing this... It helps a lot, their fans also watch that they are saying that 'you should go and watch it'," he said. 'Rustom', also starring Ileana D'Cruz, Esha Gupta, Arjan Bajwa, Pavan Malhotra among others, releases on August 12. -By Santa Banta News Network

rooting for his competitors make him a treat both on as well off screen. Perhaps the only contemporary star to promote safe sex, Ranveer happily became a brand ambassador for Durex condoms and in the bargain, made stardom relevant. It is said that it was Ranveer who approached the brand to be associated with it and the fact that he opted for something like this over the standard practice of selling colas and such sets him in a different league. In fact, to a great extent, he reminds one of an early Shah Rukh Khan who in the 1990s made for interesting copy and didn't bow down to conventions - and even Pooja Bedi, who didn't shy away from promoting safe sex and sexual well-being by featuring in a condom advertisement way back in the early 1990s. Singh even goes out of his comfort zone when it comes to paying tributes to screen legends: He performed a 15minutetribute at an Awards function earlier this year for Amitabh Bachchan; and his fascination with Anil Kapoor is such awell-known fact that Aditya Chopra had to ask him to stop mimicking Kapoor during the shooting of Befikre. Ranveer makes it all look so easy and at times his sheer energy might tire the viewer, but nothing exhausts him and he actually makes stardom look like fun. Some might say that the things that Ranveer Singh does off-screen could very well be a smart ploy to keep himself in the news. His quirky dressing with harem pants, beanies, a Mickey Mouse print shirt with a bow tie and even a skirt (yes!) only strengthen the argument. But here's a counter argument - what if Ranveer Singh is one of those who are simply fun and not embarrassed by it? Assuming this writer is wrong and the naysayers right, and Ranveer's doing all this to appear 'important', the bigger thing is that his actions aren't causing any harm. His promoting a Yash Raj Films' release (video for Sultan, a dubmashfor Fan) could be his way of saluting his mentor, Aditya Chopra, or not. But him showing love for Akshay Kumar or telling Deepika Padukone that nothing makes him happier than her isn't something that reveals a mind that's angling for a role. By Santa Banta News Network

I want to play a villain: Saqib Saleem A state-level cricketer from Delhi, Saqib Saleem wanted to wear the blue jersey and play for his country. But destiny had something else in store for him. Having started as a model, it wasn't long before he found his calling in acting. He made his debut with the romcom Mujshe Fraandship Karoge followed by Mere Dad Ki Maruti. He won rave reviews for his role as a homosexual in Bombay Talkies and got critical acclaim for his performance in Hawa Hawaai. Lately, the actor has been in the news for his music video Tum Ho Toh Lagta Hai in which he shares a sizzling chemistry with Taapsee Pannu. But it's his role of cricketer Viraj Sharma modelled after Virat Kolhi in Dishoom that Saqib can't stop talking about. He is overjoyed with the response his character has elicited - after all it was his dream to be a cricketer! Here Saqib talks about the kind of roles he wants to do, acting with his sister Huma Qureshi and more.. Are you happy with the response you have got for your role in Dishoom?

Yes, it's been overwhelming. I had got excited about the role because I was playing a cricketer. Though I couldn't pursue cricket as a career I eat, breathe and live the sport. So when this film happened I thought this is my dream - to be somebody who I always wanted to be. When I read the script, Rohit (Dhawan, director) and I were discussing that we should model the character on somebody so that it becomes easier on us. So Viraj Sharma was modelled on Virat Kohli. It's not a biography on him. I have only tried to imbibe his aggressive intent on the field (he is a soldier on the ground) in the character. Did you meet Virat? Yes, I had gone to see an IPL match. I am a huge supporter of Royal Challengers, Bengaluru. After watching

one of their matches, I met Virat and told him that I am playing this character fashioned on him. He seemed interested and said he will watch. What prompted you to do the music video Tum Ho Toh Lagta Hai? I have always maintained that music videos and web series are opportunities for actors and technicians, who haven't been able to do films together, to collaborate and make something exciting. I have never worked with Taapsee before, so I thought let's try this. I got a call from the makers who told me that the song is composed by Amaal (Malik) and sung by Shaan. When I heard the song, I liked it, it was a nice melody. So, I did it, and people have liked the chemistry between

Taapsee and me. Now you are doing a film together? When we were shooting for the video, we used to speak about how we should do a film together and now we are doing it. It's a love story and we are shooting in London. Did you know Taapsee before you did the video? We had met at a couple of events. They were formal meetings. I didn't know anything about her. But she is from Delhi and so am I. I don't know whether it was that connect, but when we started shooting and got talking, we just couldn't stop. The director had to tell us calm down and concentrate! Taapsee is an easy person to work with. When you are working with somebody, especially on a love story, you have to know the person and connect. Otherwise it becomes difficult to emote. During the making, we realised we had a lot of things in common - the way we look at films as well as other things. She seemed to be on the same wavelength, which made it easy to shoot the video. Have you become good friends? Yes, she is a nice and sweet girl. But if you are hinting at anything else, that's not the case (laughs). What is happening with Dobara, the remake of pysho-thriller Oculus? Dobara is almost done. We have some songs pending to be shot. We are looking at a year-end release.

This human interest story emanating out of Orissa, is a saga of a prodigy - marathon runner, Budhia Singh (Mayur Patole) who was once considered "The Pride of Orissa" and "a hope for India's 2016 Olympic Medal, in marathon." The film depicts the trials and tribulations of; the young boy who, "at the age of five, ran marathons like a professional", and his overtly ambitious coach Biranchi Das (Manoj Bajpayee). The narration begins in May 2006. In a slum area of Bhubaneshwar, Judo instructor Biranchi takes centre-stage by thwarting a clash between the police and the slum dwellers. Later, by

happenstance, he rescues a 5 year old Budhia from the clutches of an abusive drunkard, who had purchased him from his poverty-stricken, widowed mother Sukanti (Tillotama Shome). He returns the child to the mother. But since Sukanti is unable to take care of the little one, she hands him back

to Biranchi, who takes him to his homecum-Judo-training school, where he hosts other homeless kids too. It is here that Biranchi stumbles upon Budhia's talent and grooms him to get the recognition he deserves. But how fate or random circumstances throw the rising star into the abyss of oblivion, forms the crux of the tale. This is not only a powerful story that engages the audience. It is well-told too. With simplicity and a realistic approach, Writer-Director Soumendra Padhi's script is balanced and taut with all the elements of a touching drama. The pacing of the narrative is on an even keel and every moment is wellcaptured, especially the chaotic situation in the climactic scene. It has an adrenaline effect that adds to the frustrations. Padhi manages to portray; human apathy, exploitation, greed and politics with equal measure. In fact it overturns a

can of worms, that exposes the disturbing state of affairs especially in this case. His characters are well-etched and the dialogues are crisp and rustic and they are brought to life with strong performances. Manoj Bajpayee nails his character of the determined and pushy Biranchi Das to perfection. You adore him when he is a compassionate well-wisher, loath him when he is blinded with his ambitious goal and pity him when he is emotionally drained. Mayur Patole is endearing as the insignificant underdog, Budhia. It is his innocence and unpretentious attitude that makes him shine. His monkeying and obtuse reaction is what elicits chuckles among the audience. Especially when he says, "Haga aur bhaga.", when asked by his teacher as to what he did, before he came to school. Tillotama Shome is a brilliant actress, but as Sukanti, in a limited screen time she hardly has any moments to display her histrionics. She is aptly supported by Gopal K Singh, as her love interest and a scheming opportunist. But the surprise package is Shruti Marathe as Biranchi's wife Gita. She holds her stead against Manoj with fair gusto. She smoothly conveys the poignant turmoil of a wife and mother. Mounted with moderate production values, the songs and background score elevate the viewing experience. Overall, the film with all minor misgivings, is a candid and honest tribute to a talent we have cast off. By Santa Banta News Network

The surprising reason you should read and run this fall

(NC) When the new school year routine sets in, don't let packed schedules filled with carpools and after school activities keep you and your family from enjoying independent reading time. Be sure to pick up a good book in September to help celebrate International Literacy Day. Proclaimed by UNESCO in 1965, International Literacy Day allows people all over the globe to reflect on the value

of education and the importance of literacy as a basic human right. This is also a time to remember that this right is not recognized everywhere. According to UNESCO, on average half of all female adults in Sub-Saharan Africa are unable to read and write. Although the gross enrollment for children in primary schools in Uganda, Rwanda and Sierra Leone has increased

greatly over the last decade, young women are still consistently denied access to post-secondary schooling. In Sierra Leone alone, only 53.8 per cent of females were literate between 2009 and 2013, a low figure especially when compared to the 71.6 per cent of literate males in the country. But one charity organization is stepping up to help mend the gender and economic disparities in education. Working with partners in Uganda, Rwanda and Sierra Leone, Beautiful World Canada provides scholarships to young women wishing to attend postsecondary education. By financing recipients' entire university or college studies, these scholarships allow young women to focus on schoolwork and graduate with a better chance of finding employment. The women can better themselves and improve their communities with their new knowledge and skills. As a non-profit charity, Beautiful

World relies on the generosity of donors to ensure the education of women. This year the organization will participate in the annual Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront race taking place on October 16. Participants have the option to run the marathon, half marathon or a 5km run/walk to support education. Find our more and sign up to run with the Beautiful World team by emailing krista@beautifulworldcanada.org.

Healthy seniors show their hearts some love (NC) Living the life you want as you get older is possible with new advancements in medications and treatments. These innovations help aging Canadians lead happy and healthy lives and create new memories with loved ones, but can also come with concerns. This is especially true for those taking oral anticoagulants (blood thinners) for atrial fibrillation (AFib). Approximately 350,000 Canadians have this irregular heartbeat disorder which can lead to severe and debilitating strokes. AFib is responsible for up to 15 per cent of all strokes and is more prevalent with age as the incidence

doubles with each decade of life after 55. Treating AFib with oral anticoagulants has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke, however this comes with a rare but increased risk of bleeding in an emergency. Fortunately one of the newer treatment options is now the first and only novel oral anticoagulant to have a specific antidote for use in emergency situations. The reversal agent stops the blood-thinning effects of this particular anticoagulant if there is an urgent need, such as emergency surgery.

Thinking about your health as you age becomes even more important, but you need to make the effort to stay informed about any medical conditions and new treatment options. If you or a loved one has AFib ask your doctor about treatment options because life is unpredictable and you never know when an emergency might occur.

Make safety your number one priority, and ask your doctor for more information.

Get down to business with improved tax information How new tax benefit notices are making life easier (NC) With newly designed tax benefits correspondence from the Canada Revenue Agency, it's now easier than ever to find what you're looking for. Now, all the information you need is all on the first page. As part of an initiative to improve the way it serves and communicates with Canadians, the CRA made changes to the readability, design and accessibility of its correspondence in both paper and electronic formats. The new correspondence was also tested with real Canadians to make sure that the design was functional and that the message was clear. In July 2016, the CRA started sending its simplified notices for the Canada child benefit and the goods and sales tax/harmonized sales tax credit. Each piece of benefit correspondence provides specific information on your tax situation,

including your tax obligations and personalized benefit information. The most important information is clearly set out with the account summary displayed on the first page. The simplified text makes it easier to understand why you received the correspondence, and what action, if any, is required. The CRA's online services are also simplifying things, with a self-service portal that includes direct deposit options and assistance for people with hearing or visual impairments. There is even a MyBenefits CRA App. Whether you apply for, receive, or owe money related to your benefits notices, the important information is now easier to find and understand. Keep an eye out for more changes to your notices in the next few months. Learn more about changes to CRA correspondence at www.cra.gc.ca/noticesandletters.

(NC) Small businesses are essential to our growing economy — Statistics Canada data shows they employ nearly 70 per cent of the total private labour force, and are the largest type of business in the country, as 98 per cent of all businesses have less than 100 employees. In spite of how important small businesses are, they can be difficult to launch, run and maintain. Now the Canada Revenue Agency is making things a little easier with improvements to tax information for small and medium businesses. Starting in October 2016, businesses will begin receiving a new, simple, easy-to-read T2 goods and sales tax/harmonized sales tax Notice of Assessment or Reassessment. The redesigned notices will clearly state the most important information on the first page, and what action, if any, is required. The CRA's online services

are also simplifying things for small businesses with a self-service portal that includes direct deposit options and assistance for people with hearing or visual impairments. The changes are the result of a correspondence review and have been tested with real business owners to ensure that the new format is easy to follow and that the message is clear. Within the next three years, virtually all of the CRA's correspondence to individuals and businesses will be in this new format. A lot of time and effort go into managing a business. With easier, simpler and more accessible correspondence, small businesses will be able to spend less time trying to understand their tax obligations and more time helping Canada prosper. Do you know how much you're paying for your investments? (NC) Whether you're investing for your retirement, your kids' college fund or a fabulous vacation, you need your investments to work for you. That means knowing exactly how much you're paying for the management of your investments. You may think this is easy to figure out just by looking at your statement, but the reality isn't that simple. In the past, Canadian financial firms weren't required to disclose the details of their investment fees, which often made it difficult for investors to tell what their total costs were. Some experts believe this lack of transparency is one reason Canadians pay some of the highest mutual fund fees in the world. But change is coming soon with the Client Relationship Model — Phase 2. CRM2 is a series of investment reforms that are being phased in over three years by Canadian regulators to improve disclosure. “CRM2 responds to a need for much greater education and transparency in the industry,” says Silvio Stroescu, vice president of deposits and investments at Tangerine. “Too many Canadians still believe they're not paying fees for their investments. Going forward, Canadians will be more empowered with the kind of knowledge

they need to make smarter decisions with their investments, and this is something we have always advocated for at Tangerine.” For the first time ever, in July this year, your financial firm will have to provide two annual reports that detail: 1. What you're paying your dealer in dollar amounts. The Management Expense Ratio (MER) of an investment fund is made up of two main components: the management fee the fund company charges for the administrative and operating costs of

Advertise Your Business in Apna Roots (South Asian Connection) Call Today 604 599 5021 Email:staff@apnaroots.com

running the fund, and the trailing commission the fund company pays to your investment dealer. CRM2 requires your investment dealer to send you an annual report summarizing their

earnings such as trailing commission(s), in actual dollars, as well as any other earnings like deferred sales charges or referral fees. This report will also provide a summary of other account charges like annual administration and transaction fees – all of which will help you see how much you're paying for the services you're receiving. 2. Your financial firm will also have to disclose your personal rate of return. Previously, firms only had to disclose the rate of return for the fund overall but with CRM2 your statement will provide your personal investment returns for the previous year and since opening your account. Now you'll be able to tell if you're actually making money or not. Learn more about how CRM2 works to help you become a smarter, more empowered investor at www.tangerine.ca/forwardthinking/inve sting/what-is-crm-2

How your tax correspondence is getting easier (NC) Between commuting, kids, h o b b i e s , volunteering, work and having some semblance of a social life, it seems like there just aren't enough hours in a day. Fortunately, there are a few ways your life is actually becoming simpler — read on to take advantage of one of these small things that make a big difference. As a result of ongoing consultations and in an effort to improve the way it serves and communicates with Canadians, the Canada Revenue Agency made changes to the readability, format and accessibility of its correspondence in both paper and electronic formats.
