A new Superintendent of Real Estate will take over regulation of the B.C. industry, Premier Christy Clark said Wednesday. Clark and Finance Minister Mike de Jong said a the current industry-led Real Estate Council of B.C. will be replaced by a board with a majority of "public interest, non-industry members," and fines for real estate misconduct are to be increased. Clark said the maximum fine for individuals will go to $250,000, and twice that for real estate brokerages. The government is adopting all the recommendations of an independent advisory group, including banning realtors from representing both buyer and seller in a transaction.

"The real estate sector has had 10 years to get it right on selfregulation and they haven't," Clark said. Clark said there will be more changes announced in the next few weeks to help people get into the real estate market in urban areas where house prices are spiralling. In his latest budget, de Jong increased the property purchase tax exemption level from $475,000 to $750,000 for new homes only, and increased the tax rate from two to three per cent on the value of homes in excess of $2 million. Clark was non-committal on a

proposal by the City of Vancouver to impose a tax on vacant homes. She said the province is studying whether it has a role to play in such a tax, and repeated the federal housing minister's position that all levels of government are needed to deal with housing affordability.

By THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA –Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says Canada will lead one of NATO’s four new battle groups being established on the alliance’s eastern flank as part of its stepped up deterrent against Russia. Sajjan tells The Canadian Press that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce the exact size of that contribution at next week’s NATO leaders’ summit in Warsaw, Poland. He says the move is designed to show Canadian solidarity with NATO against Russia, which has annexed the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine and backed proRussian separatist forces in that country’s eastern region. Sajjan says the hope is still to be able to re-establish a dialogue between

the 28-country alliance and Russia in an attempt to dial down what is widely seen as the worst conflict between the Kremlin and the West since the end of the Cold War. U.S. President Barack Obama urged Canada on Wednesday to make a greater contribution to NATO during his speech to Parliament in Ottawa. Obama said NATO is more secure when every member country, including Canada, contributes its “full share to the alliance.

Three Amigos Summit: What Trudeau, Obama and Pena Nieto agreed on -By Janyce McGregor, CBC NewsThe talks hadn't even started between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. President Barack Obama and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto when statements began circulating about what they'd agree on. Among the laundry list of shared priorities and work in progress, here's what caught our eye. Climate change Obama was barely off the plane when the White House announced a joint environmental action plan. (Canada's release soon followed.) As CBC News reported earlier this week, the three countries want 50 per cent of their electricity to come from clean power generation by 2025. The plan includes support for cross-border transmission lines, including infrastructure for renewable energy. There's also a plan to tackle shortlived pollutants, including cutting methane emissions from the oil and gas sector between 40 and 45 per cent by 2025, reducing black carbon (soot) emissions and finding alternatives to

hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The trio is also collaborating on green transportation strategies and conservation measures to protect species at risk, like the monarch butterfly. Trilateral trade With protesters gathered in downtown Ottawa to denounce the 12country Trans-Pacific Partnership, would the official communiqués enthusiastically embrace this trade agreement? Not really. There's one line about the Pacific Rim deal the three North American partners must ratify by early 2018: "We will continue to work diligently to complete our respective domestic processes." In the meantime, the Amigos

continue to adjust their existing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to changing economic circumstances. They've revised the rules of origin for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, rubber, metals, industrial/electrical machinery, precision instruments and natural gas. Briefing reporters on the plane to Ottawa, White House spokesman Josh Earnest reacted to Donald Trump's call to repeal NAFTA by promoting the TPP, a deal once hoped to be Obama's trade legacy: "We've already succeeded in renegotiating NAFTA. That's exactly what the TPP does," he said. Border issues The North American trusted traveller program continues to roll out. By the end of 2016, Canadian and American citizens who are part of the NEXUS system, which streamlines border crossing for low-risk, frequent travellers, will be eligible to apply for a Viajero Confiable program to expedite screening at Mexican airports. In return, Mexicans will be able to apply for NEXUS processing.

Sikh man's turban helps save life of struggling swimmer near Kamloops The Canadian Press KAMLOOPS — A Sikh man in Kamloops is being called a hero after he used his turban to help save a woman from the frigid North Thompson River in the province’s southern Interior. Avtar Hothi and his son Paul were working at their family farm in Heffley Creek, just north of Kamloops, on Saturday evening when they heard cries for help. They rushed to the riverbank to see a young woman struggling to stay afloat in the strong current. Paul Hothi says they urged her to try to get closer to the grassy riverbank, but with nothing nearby for her to grab, they feared one of

them would have to risk a jump into the water. Hothi says that’s when his father pulled off his turban which, when

unwrapped, is a nearly three-metre length of cloth. The woman was able to clutch one end when it was tossed to her, and she was quickly pulled from the water. “We weren’t prepared for it or expecting anything like this and his quick thinking,” said the younger Hothi. “We used his turban as a rope because it would have been a lot harder just to pull someone up off shore.” He also said someone brought a blanket and the frightened woman was calmed down and returned safely to relatives in a nearby home. Sikh men consider it improper to show their hair in public, but Hothi noted those rules don’t apply if it’s a case of life and death.

One of four men accused in woman's killing pleads guilty to conspiracy

One of four men accused of being involved in the 2009 killing of an Abbotsford woman has pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit murder. Sukhpal Johal appeared in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Wednesday morning to enter the plea. He was initially charged with conspiracy and being an accessory to murder after the fact. Details about the case that were discussed during the hearing cannot be reported because they are subject to a publication ban. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 18. According to information previously released by police, shortly after 7:30 p.m. on April 27, 2009, members of the Abbotsford police were called to the 34000-block Townshipline Road in response to a hitand-run. Kulwinder Kaur Gill and her husband, Iqbal Singh Gill, had been walking on the side of the road — something they often did in the evening — when she was hit by a pickup that was travelling west. Kulwinder Gill was thrown into a ditch by the impact, and first-responders were unable to revive her. Although it was initially believed to be a hit-and-run, police soon suspected a homicide had taken place. Arrests were made and charges laid almost four years later. Iqbal Gill and Gurpreet Singh Atwal are charged with first-degree murder. Atwal is scheduled to go to trial before a jury in September. Gill’s trial is set to take place in 2017. The case against a fourth coaccused, Jaspreet Singh Sohi, concluded on Oct. 28, 2015. Sohi pleaded guilty to a charge of being an accessory to murder after the fact and received a sentence of time served plus one day in jail. A charge of first-degree murder was stayed. -BY JENNIFER SALTMAN

Canada Post, union far apart as deadline looms union has yet to formally respond. Meanwhile, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers says its own request to delay a work stoppage with a two-week "cooling off period" has been declined. The union has released a list of 24 demands in its negotiations with Canada Post, but the main sticking point is pensions for future employees. "The number one issue for us is the pension," Canada Post spokesperson Jon Hamilton told CTV News Channel. "We face a $6-billion pension solvency deficit." Canada Post has offered to leave the existing employees' defined benefit pension plans untouched, while introducing a defined contribution pension plan for new hires. ( THE CANADIAN PRESS) Canada Post and the union representing its workers remain far apart in negotiations for a new contract, with a work stoppage looming on July 2. Thursday marks the last day that Canadians can expect to receive mail in a timely manner, with a statutory holiday on Friday and a possible work stoppage coming on Saturday. Canada Post has already warned businesses and members of the public to make alternate arrangements for necessary correspondence by mail, ahead of the deadline. The last day to send mail and ensure it is delivered on-time was Wednesday. Canada Post says its latest offer to the union was tabled on Saturday, but the

"We can't keep adding new employees to the defined benefit pension plan, but we can secure the pension plan for those people that are in it." The union has suggested that Canada Post is trying to create a twotiered system among its employees. The union also points out that Canada Post has been turning a profit for years, and made $44 million in the first quarter of the year. "We don't see any justification for the cuts they're putting forward," Mike Palecek, a spokesperson for the union, told CTV News Channel on Thursday. "Canada Post is fully capable of paying its employees now, and there's no reason they shouldn’t be able to do the same for future employees." Palecek says the union does not want a strike, but Canada Post seems prepared for a work stoppage. "We're quite concerned that Canada Post is trying to provoke a labour dispute," he

With pain etched on their faces, the family of Jocelyn George gathered in Port Alberni, B.C. for the funeral of the 18-year-old mother of two. The one question looming over them: how did she end up dead after an overnight stay in the cells of the Port Alberni RCMP detachment? Outside of the funeral on Wednesday, her cousin Lee Lucas said there is an immediate need to hear from investigators about what happened to George while she was in police custody last Thursday night. "We know she was brought in and they said she was okay, and she was found in the morning. Our main concern is to find out what happened in the Jocelyn George time between with Christopher Cenname and their now four-monthwhen she was old daughter. (Provided by Christopher Cenname arrested and when the ambulance picked her up," Lucas said. George was taken to the West Coast General Hospital on the Friday morning after she was found "in need of medical attention" in her cell, according to the BC Coroners Service, but did not release the cause of death yet. 'This is happening far too much' Lucas said he believes RCMP were well aware of the alcohol and drug problems his cousin had been dealing with. The family is asking for an investigation into the way people with addictions are dealt with by police. "If things can change from this, if cop protocols can change from this when they bring someone in who has issues like this..." said her cousin Lee Lucas. "You have got to look at how they are brought in and why they are not checked out," said Lucas. "Sometimes things have to change because this is happening far too much especially for our people in this province." George was a member of the Ahousaht and Hesquiaht First Nations. -By Richard Zussman, CBC News

Metro Vancouver mayors reject replacement of Massey Tunnel with 10-lane bridge The mayors of Metro Vancouver have rejected the provincial government's plans to replace the George Massey tunnel with a 10-lane bridge. It's the first time the mayors, who make up the Metro Vancouver Board, have spoken out collectively against the $3.5-billion crossing. The decision came as the board released a report assessing the impact of the bridge on the region's traffic congestion and the environment. "History has demonstrated the world over, you can't reduce congestion by simply building more roads," said board chair Greg Moore in a written statement. "This project represents an expansion of car-oriented infrastructure and diverts crucial funds from transportation projects that support the regional growth strategy." The board said that while it understands the need to reduce traffic congestion along the busy Highway 99, it questions how the $3.5-billion bridge would resolve those issues. Moore said the board would prefer to see a smaller bridge with more lanes dedicated to public transportation. He also expressed concerns about charging drivers to cross the bridge, which would leave commuters without a toll-free route. The report highlights the following issues:

Insufficient consideration of alternatives to a ten-lane bridge. Lack of integration into the regional growth strategy and transportation network.

Ecological disruption to the Fraser River estuary, an important habitat for salmon and birds. Impacts on Metro Vancouver infrastructure, including water mains and sewer lines.

Ontario to make driver's licence gender neutral OTTAWA – Ontario is introducing gender-neutral driver's licences and health cards. Beginning in early 2017, drivers will be able to select X, instead of an M for male or F for female, for their licences. This month the province started issuing health cards that no longer display information about a person's sex on the front of the card. Those who want a new health card without the sex identifier before their regular renewal date can obtain one immediately through ServiceOntario at no cost. The Liberal government said it is making the changes "to ensure the fair, ethical and equitable treatment of people with trans and non-binary gender identity." Ontario will also launch public consultations this summer to develop policies on how the government collects, uses and displays sex and gender information on government forms and products. -By The Canadian Press

Recreational and ecological disruption on Deas Island Regional Park. Downloading of major expenditures onto local governments for road improvements. Negative effects on transit ridership and affordability. to Insufficient consideration climate change and air quality. "We are genuinely concerned about the possible impacts of bridge construction, roadway improvements, tunnel removal and possible future dredging which could impact between $500 million to $1 billion in regional infrastructure and assets," said Metro Vancouver utilities committee chair Darrell Mussatto. The board said it was also concerned about a lack of public consultation on the project. It said it will send a letter to the province about the report and its analysis, highlighting its concerns. The province announced plans last December to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel with what would be the largest toll bridge in the province. Transportation Minister Todd Stone argued the bridge would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing unnecessary idling and would save commuters up to 30 minutes a day of travel time. The three-kilometre bridge will connect Richmond and Delta across the Fraser River. Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and would take about five years. -CBC News

Islamic State suspected after suicide bombers kill 42 at Istanbul airport ISTANBUL: Turkey pointed the finger at Islamic State on Wednesday for a triple suicide bombing and gun attack that killed 42 people at Istanbul's main airport, and President Tayyip Erdogan called it a turning point in the global fight against terrorism. In the deadliest of a series of suicide bombings this year in Turkey, the attackers struck the busy airport, a symbol of Istanbul's role as the Muslim world's most open and cosmopolitan city, a crossroads between Europe and Asia. Three bombers opened fire to create panic outside the airport on Tuesday night, before two of them got inside and blew themselves up. Two hundred and thirty-nine people were wounded, officials said, giving a full account of the bloodshed. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the attackers shot at random to overcome security checks at the international terminal of Ataturk airport. One blew himself up in the departures hall, a second in arrivals, and the third outside. Authorities said on Wednesday 41 were killed. The figure is now believed to be 42 after Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu reported an injured woman had died. "Our thoughts on those responsible for the attack lean towards Islamic State,"

Yildirim told a news conference in the capital Ankara, adding that investigations should be completed in the coming days and the identities of the bombers revealed. John Brennan, head of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, also said the attack bore the hallmarks of Islamic State "depravity." A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, said U.S. intelligence agencies do not have sufficient evidence to conclude definitively that Islamic State was responsible for the attack. But the official added that Turkish authorities taking the lead in the investigation may have evidence the United States has not seen. Turkey is part of a U.S.-led military

coalition against Islamic State and home to around 3 million refugees from the five-year civil war in neighbouring Syria. Islamic State has established a selfdeclared caliphate on swathes of both Syria and Iraq and declared war on all non-Muslims and all Muslims who do not accept its ultra-hardline vision of Sunni Islam. It has claimed responsibility for similar bombing and gun attacks in Belgium and France in the past year. Erdogan, whose government has taken steps this week to improve relations with Israel and Russia in part to strengthen its hand in fighting against militants, said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global battle against terrorism, which he said had "no regard for faith or values". U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the attack in separate phone calls with Erdogan, his office said. Obama, at a North American summit in Ottawa, Canada, said the United States has offered all assistance available to Turkey and pledged to work with Ankara to fight terrorism. "We're still learning all the facts, but we know this is part of our broader shared fight against terrorist networks," he told a news conference. -Reuters UK

BC's top doctor named to federal marijuana task force OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – The Federal Government has now officially launched its task force to study the legalization and regulation of marijuana use, and it is putting a former Chretienera cabinet minister at the helm. BC’s top doctor will also play a key role in developing new federal laws that will legalize marijuana. Provincial Medical Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall has been named to the panel that will cross the country looking for input on the proposed legislation. Other local members of the group include former Vancouver City Councillor George Chow and University of Victoria Criminologist Susan Boyd.

The task force is going to be chaired by former cabinet minister Anne McLellan, who has served in all the relevant portfolios including health, justice and public safety. She says before her group prepares recommendations for the government it

will hold wide ranging consultations with provincial and municipal governments. “Equally important will be our engagement with youth and with experts in relevant fields such as healthcare, substance abuse, criminal justice and economics.” The task force has set up online consultations for regular Canadians and plans to release a report by this November. The government is reminding people that until the law changes, marijuana is still an illegal drug except for medicinal users. Ottawa has promised to introduce legislation to legalize pot by the spring of 2017.

The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Every row, every column and every 3-by-3 subgrid should contain digits 1 to 9 only.

Trump levels clear warning shot as NAFTA leaders gather in Canada BY THE CANADIAN PRESS WASHINGTON – Donald Trump has delivered his most explicit threat to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement just as the continent’s three leaders gather to discuss closer ties. If elected president, the presumptive Republican nominee says he would inform Mexico and Canada of his desire to immediately renegotiate a more favourable deal. If they refused to make significant concessions, he said he’d submit notice under the agreement — he explicitly cited Article 2205 — of the US government’s intention to withdraw from

a deal he considers a disaster. “They’re so used to having their own way,” Trump says of America’s neighbours. ”Not with Trump. They won’t have their own way … NAFTA was the worst trade deal in the history — it’s, like, the history — of this country.” The warning came in an antiglobalization speech that solidified Trump’s position as the most protectionist Republican presidential candidate in generations. He listed a series of complaints about American trade policy as he read a pre-written address titled, “Declaring American Economic Independence.”

Scotland for “immediate discussions” with Brussels to protect its EU seat

| innovative | independent inclusive cl d

Washington, (ANI): Scotland's First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party Nicola Sturgeo has said Scotland will seek “immediate discussions” with Brussels to “protect Scotland’s place in the EU” in the wake of the Brexit vote. After an emergency Cabinet meeting she said "Cabinet agreed that we will seek to enter into immediate discussions with the EU institutions and other EU member states to explore all possible options to protect Scotland’s place in the EU." Further, " Over the next few days, I

will establish an advisory panel comprising a range of experts who can advise me and the Scottish government on a number of important matters – legal, financial and diplomatic," the Guardian quoted Sturgeon as saying. She mentioned that the Scottish government wants to re-emphasise that Scotland is an attractive place to do business and will reach out to the business community and added that she also wants to reassure citizens of EU states living in Scotland in the wake of the Brexit vote. As part of this, she will invite consul generals of all the EU states

to a summit at Bute house. Steps will now be taken to ensure that the necessary legislation will be put in place for a second Scottish independence referendum, Scotland’s first minister has said. However, she doesn’t guarantee that the second referendum will take place. The Brexit poll has created a situation of political dilemma for Scotland as all 32 voting areas of the region voted to stay in the European Union, but they were outnumbered by the "Leave" vote in England and Wales. Wednesday’s Three Amigos summit in Ottawa, where the continent’s leaders will discuss closer co-operation in several areas to protect against the headwinds of economic nationalism now blowing on different continents. For Trump, that growing resistance to global integration is cause to celebrate. He saluted Britain’s vote to leave the European Union. He even used a turn of phrase similar to one from anti-EU leader Nigel Farage, who taunted European colleagues Tuesday for mocking his Brexit vision: “You’re not laughing now, are you?” In a similar sneer at the forces of global integration, Trump said he’d spent years complaining about trade with China: “Nobody listened. But they’re listening now.” Trump’s two main complaints were about events that occurred during the presidency of Bill Clinton, the spouse of his likely general-election opponent: NAFTA in 1993, and China entering the World Trade Organization in 1999. He proposed seven remedies. One is to withdraw from the 12country Trans-Pacific Partnership plan. Another is to label China a currency manipulator and impose punitive tariffs on its products. Redoing or rescinding NAFTA is another. In his speech, Trump never mentioned Canada specifically. Even after the speech, his campaign issued talking points complaining about the trade practices of Mexico — but not Canada. Yet one trade lawyer in Toronto said the policies he espouses have clear implications for the northern neighbour; three-quarters of Canadian exports go to the U.S. ”He is clearly the most protectionist presidential candidate, probably, since the 1920s,” Mark Warner says. “Presidential powers are limited but a president with this kind of a trade agenda could easily make life difficult for trading partners by pushing presidential executive powers to the limit. The worst case for Canada is that he might push (Hillary) Clinton to be more protectionist in border states if the contest narrows.” Nearly two dozen consecutive polls show him losing the popular vote to Clinton. His comeback hopes appear to hinge on the anti-trade, anti-elite, antiforeign sentiment of the likes that propelled Farage’s forces to a stunning win. Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to redraw the electoral map. As a case in point, he delivered his trade speech Tuesday in Pennsylvania — a state that hasn’t voted Republican in decades. He’d need that state and other northern, former industrial powerhouses like Michigan and Ohio, if he loses states with growing Latino populations like Florida, Virginia and Colorado. Even if he’s elected, Warner said, a protectionist president would find himself in a complex fight.

Probiotics may prevent breast cancer: Study Washington, D.C., (ANI): A new study has found probiotics may prove to be a critical factor in preventing breast cancer. Dr Gregor Reid, the professor of microbiology, immunology and surgery at the Western University in Ontario, Canada, said the bacteria having the potential to abet breast cancer are present in the breasts of cancer patients, while beneficial bacteria are more abundant in healthy breasts. American society for microbiology researchers has suggested these findings may ultimately lead to the use of probiotics to prevent cancer. In the study, Reid's PhD student Camilla Urbaniak obtained breast

tissues from 58 women, who were undergoing lumpectomies or mastectomies for either benign (13 women) or cancerous (45 women) tumors as well as from 23 healthy women, who had undergone breast reductions or enhancements. Researchers found that women with breast cancer had elevated levels of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, two bacteria known to induce double-stranded breaks in DNA in HeLa cells, which are cultured human cells. They say the breaks are

“Besides fighting cancer directly, it might be possible to increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria at the expense of harmful ones, through probiotics,” said Reid. He added antibiotics targeting bacteria that abet cancer might be another option for improving breast cancer management. The study is published in journal of Applied and Environmental Microbiology. (ANI) prone to errors, which can cause cancer to develop. Health-promoting bacteria Lactobacillus and Streptococcus (lactic acid bacteria) were more abundant in women with healthy breasts, both are anti-carcinogenic.

No hair-cut for Dalits in this Muzzafarnagar village

Muzzafarnagar (UP), ANI: We have read in our history books about the time when our country was plagued by untouchability, when communities considered as untouchables were not allowed to enter public spaces and were socially secluded. You would think have times changed and all communities are being given the same rights and freedoms enshrined in our constitution. Believe it or not, there is still a village that follows the ancient tradition of caste based discrimination. In Bhup Khedi village in Muzaffarnagar, Dalits are not allowed in the same salons where upper-class communities go for their haircuts. In fact, Thakurs of the village have announced a blanket ban, against Dalits from getting salon services from the shops they visit. Located 80 kms from New Delhi, the Bhup Khedi village in Muzaffarnagar still follows laws made by the Thakur’s which deny Dalits their rights. Barbers in the village have been pressurized by the upper-caste not to provide any salon services to Dalits and have been warned of consequences otherwise. The Dalits have decided to raise their voice against this injustice and bring an end to this age-old custom. They organised a panchayat to raise their voices against such laws. “Since childhood we are seeing that our elders cannot get a hair-cut from the barbers in our village neither can we. Whenever we go to any shop the barber either gives excuse of being too busy or says directly that Thakurs have asked us not to cut your hair,” said Harish Kumar, a member of the Dalit community. To get the usual task of getting a haircut, these dalits have to travel to nearby villages and get the job done. No barber in their village agrees to provide them services.

Anushka owes it to Khans

Working with Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman is on the bucket list of many Bollywood actresses and Anushka, who has shared screen with all the three Khans, says she is grateful to them for helping her reach a wider audience. Anushka entered the film industry in 2008 with 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' opposite Shah Rukh and in 2014 film 'pk' she was paired with Aamir. She will be now seen opposite Salman in wrestler drama 'Sultan'. "For me as an actor it is great to work with the Khans, who have every possible experience one can have in a film industry. They have been around for more than two decades. There is a lot one can observe and learn when you are working with them. Apart from that, I am very grateful that because of them my work is reaching to more people," Anushka told PTI. The 28-year-old actress says even though she has worked with top actors, choosing her co-stars is never on her mind as for her the director and script are her priority. "I have never tried to work with actors, for me the director and script is paramount. For me, it is always good

script and in doing that I have been fortunate that I got to work with wonderful actors not just the Khans like Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Sushant Singh Rajput, Imran Khan and others. It has been wonderful." In her latest film "Sultan", which has been directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Anushka will be seen playing a Haryanvi wrestler. The female casting of the film was hotly anticipated as names of many leading actresses cropped up ahead of the shoot before Anushka was finalised. However, the actress says she was not aware of any such stories or

speculations floating around the film, which is slated to released this Eid. "As a person and as an actor I try to take as little information about what is happening around me as possible. I was focused on what have to do. I don't read newspapers, I don't read anything that has come out. Only if something wrong has been written about me, my publicist sends me the article and so I can take action against them. Otherwise I don't read anything.

"So, I don't have any idea what was going on. I was only concerned with when my time started. When Adi (Aditya Chopra) called me he asked me if I wanted to do it. After hearing the script, I came on board. That is when my journey began and that is what matters to me." Anushka described her character Afra as a rooted person, who is very mature for her age. Since Anushka joined the film late, she had just six weeks to prepare for her role. "I was up for the challenge. I really liked my role. The only thing that I was worried was that I didn't have enough time to prepare for the role. For a film like this you would want three to four months of proper training. But I had less than six weeks to prepare." The actress, however, is happy that her hard work is paying off as the audience has liked the rushes of her character in the trailer and songs. "It was a very packed schedule for me. I don't know how this six months have passed but all in all I am very happy that people believe I am a wrestler. So, it was all worth it." The "NH 10" actress says with the role she is trying to break the perception that female wrestlers are always bulky. When she researched about the subject, she found out that most international female wrestlers have a lean built. "I knew that I

have a certain perception to break. I look a certain way and I have always been lean. During my research, I found that you don't have to be wide-framed. There are many who are toned. I realised that is what I have to work towards." Her chemistry with her co-star Salman has also garnered favourable response from fans and Anushka attributes it to their starkly different personalities. "The beauty of the casting is that it is so unconventional. It added a different dimension. Our approach is very different. There is a weirdly organic energy that comes between actors who are so different form one another." -By Santa Banta News Network

'TE3N' has riveting plot with strong performances Set in Kolkata, "TE3N" is an astutely mounted, suspense filled, investigative drama. It is the closure of a kidnapping case that occurred eight years ago. Ever since John Biswas (Amitabh Bachchan) loses his eight-year-old granddaughter Angela Roy in a tragic kidnapping incident, he has been depressed and guilt ridden, for he is blamed for a crime he has no hand in. He visits the Lal Bazar police station daily, to meet the officer Sarita Sarkar (Vidya Balan), seeking an update and thus hoping for a closure. With the case not making any headway, John also hounds the then investigative officer Martin Das (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who has now left the police force and become a priest. Once, while in the market, John stumbles upon a little girl wearing a cap, which Angela had worn when she was kidnapped. This sets John on the search trail once again and ignites his hope for justice. But it is only when another child, Ronnie, is kidnapped and a similar sequence of events that happened during Angela's case follow, that the investigating officer Sarita reopens old case files and seeks Martin's help and intervention.

MOVIE REVIEWS

How the trio investigates the case and solves the mystery, forms the crux of the tale. The riveting plot and brilliant performances are what keep you hooked. Amitabh, with his awkward gait and open mouth, makes a remarkable effort to keep John Biswas distinct and different from his "Piku" character, which too was of a Bengali septuagenarian. He is convincing and shines as the distraught grandfather.

Nawazuddin is effortlessly natural and gets into the character of Martin Das. Vidya, credited for a guest appearance, offers nothing exceptional. Sabyasachi Chakraborty as Manohar Sinha, Ronnie's grandfather, is perfunctory, despite his strong screen

presence. Prakash Belawadi as Manohar's colleague is wasted. Padmavati Rao in the wheel-chair, as John's wife Nancy, holds her own against Amitabh, in a miniscule role. Adapted from the 2013 released Korean film, "Montage", director Ribhu Dasgupta's direction is fraught with flaws especially in his script. The characters are underdeveloped and wafer thin, especially that of the kidnapper. His motivation is totally unconvincing. Similarly, Nawazuddin's character too seems flimsy. His getting involved in the case after becoming a priest is a tad too far-fetched. Also the screenplay, with the timelines overlapping, is a bit confusing. Visually, the setting is realistically natural and moody and is captured brilliantly by cinematographer Tushar Kanti Ray's lens. There are a few manually focussed frames, which may seem artistic, but in actuality, blemish the viewing experience. The background score by Clinton Cejero merges well with the visuals and adds pace to the narrative. Overall, this leniently-paced suspense film which starts off with a swelling promise seems to have been wrapped with hurried compromises that doesn't really leave a strong impact -except for the performances. -By Santa Banta News Network

'Udta Punjab': Soars high with performances Review Designed as a crime thriller and symbolically titled "Udta Punjab", the film delves into the growing drug menace in the state of Punjab. The narrative intertwines the lives of a popular youth icon, rockstar-cum-rap-singer Tommy Singh, migrant labourer Kumari Pinky, who unwittingly gets caught in the clutches of the drug mafia, doctorcum-activist Preet Sahni, Inspector Sartaj Singh and his younger brother Bali. The plot is pretentious, dramatised and far-fetched. The narration begins with drugs being flung across the border, in the dark of the night, into a field in Punjab. The packet accidentally lands in Kumari Pinky's hand, who tries to palm off the consignment to Bali's contact. Though ill-equipped with the ways of drug dealing, she negotiates in the hope of making a quick buck. Inexplicably, realisation dawns on Pinky, when she is en route to meet the drug dealer. She destroys the consignment before getting caught by the mafia and has to face the brunt of its wrath for her deed. Meanwhile, the police in their zest to show 'cop power' arrest Tommy Singh for using drugs and

corrupting the youth with his druginfused rap music. Also, Sartaj Singh realises that his brother has become an addict when he lands at Preet Sahni's clinic after getting over-dosed. The doctor motivates Sartaj to fight the drug menace, "system mein rehekar". The characters are well-defined, but their graphs are poorly etched, especially Tommy Singh. His journey though exposed realistically, is unconvincing. The drama that keeps you hooked only highlights the premise of the story. It sends out a strong message that every individual needs to fight the corrupt system at their individual level. But the dramatic moment hits the peak when Tommy,

while explaining to Pinky, screeches, "Maal khatam, party over, go home." What follows is an equally impressive reply from Pinky. The dialogues, replete with cuss words, are as vibrant as the performances. Shahid Kapoor, with his tattooed physique and funky hair style, portrays Tommy Singh to the T. He lives the character of an artiste constantly under the influence of drugs and he demonstrates it with his meteoric moods, which he displays with alarming, bonechilling precision. Similarly, with a deglamorized and feral look, Alia Bhatt captures your heart as Pinky. She is consistent

and brilliant in her performance. With a restrained performance, Punjabi cinema's heartthrob Diljit Dosanjh is impressive and makes an impact. He is intense as a concerned brother and charming as Preet's love interest. Prabhjyot Singh essays the role of Bali, a victim of circumstances to perfection. You inadvertently feel sorry for him, even when he turns into a criminal. Kareena Kapoor Khan, as Preet is competent, but offers nothing exceptional. So is Satish Kaushik, who plays Taayaji, Tommy's uncle and show promoter. The songs are situational. They add flavour to the film but do not propel the narrative. Mounted with moderate production values, the film is deliberated as a neo-realistic film. Rajeev Ravi's cinematography is remarkable with realistic frames. The sound, designed by Kunal Sharma, effectively layered by editor Meghna Sen, enhances the viewing experience. Overall, "Udta Punjab", with all the hype it created in the media for its "expression of creative freedom" is worth a watch, only for the performances and social message. -By Santa Banta News Network

5 surprising benefits of working from home (NC) More Canadians than ever are working from home according to the latest Statistics Canada report on the subject. The latest data shows nearly two million of us are working remotely at least once a week, and with new technologies and a better understanding of what makes a successful virtual workforce, that number is only going to grow in the future. While the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “working from home” might be an image of you lounging comfortably in your pyjamas all day while you work on your laptop, there are more benefits to telecommuting than this. “Being able to work independently is great. You don't have the organizational boundaries, and you can structure the day according to your pace,” says Dr. Lori LaCivita, Walden University's Industrial and Organizational Psychology graduate program director. public transportation and losing a few hours of every day. What you choose to do with those newfound extra hours is up to you — take up a new hobby, finish that never-ending project, catch up on your favourite show, or simply sleep in late. 2. Find work/life balance. Whether you have kids, are an indemand social butterfly or are going to school part-time to upgrade your skills, the increased flexibility that comes with working from home gives you more

potential to achieve a better balance between your personal and professional lives. 3. Save money. While it's easy to see the savings from not having to buy gas or public transit passes, working remotely has even more savings to contribute to your monthly budget. You won't have to spend much on a work wardrobe, and you'll save on expensive work lunches by eating more meals at home and may be able to cut back on your day care or babysitting expenses. 4. Increase your engagement and productivity. Research shows many people prefer to work from home — so much so that employees are increasingly willing to sacrifice perks, including a portion of their salary, to reap the benefits that telecommuting offers. Research shows that people who work remotely are also more productive and more likely to be engaged in their jobs. 5. Cut the drama. Forget office politics and that co-worker you can't stand; working from home means less time wasted on gossip. Just make sure you don't disconnect from others completely. “Just because you're working remotely, doesn't mean you shouldn't communicate,” says Dr. LaCivita. Collaboration is key to optimal performance. Find more tips on working from home for employees and managers at www.waldenu.edu/virtualteam.

The surprising person helping your child develop positive relationships guideline to help its members support positive interactions with children. “The college's new practice guideline highlights ways registered early childhood educators (RECEs) can better support positive interactions with children, through techniques like forming positive perspectives and nurturing responsive relationships, says Melanie Dixon, director of professional practice at the college. “Being responsive means working with children to reduce their stress and anticipate moments in their day that

(NC) Every parent wants the best for their child. This means giving them every tool to succeed in life, school and relationships. And while we usually think of teachers as helping kids in the school and booklearning departments, did you know that educators also play a key role in supporting children's internal capacity to self-regulate their behaviour and engage in positive interactions with other children and adults? Developing caring and nurturing relationships that support children's learning is one of the core competencies that early childhood educators bring to early learning programs in Ontario. The College of Early Childhood Educators, which regulates Ontario's early childhood educators, recently released a

Why your kids' educators need to stay current (NC) As research continues to reveal new insights into the minds and learning behaviours of babies and children, parents want peace of mind knowing this new information is applied by the people who work with and teach their kids. And now educators working with Ontario's youngest children will be required to engage in ongoing learning in order to maintain their certificate to practise. In September 2016, the College of Early Childhood Educators is introducing a mandatory continuous professional learning program for the over 48,000 registered early childhood educators (RECEs) in the province. According to the college, the new program's framework will help RECEs identify areas

of their practice where opportunities exist to enhance skills and set learning goals. The framework will allow them to consider a wide variety of learning options, such as post-secondary programs, case study analysis, job shadowing and webinars. “With all the remarkable advances in the science of brain development and

how this new knowledge affects our understanding of learning and development in babies and children, RECEs need to stay on top of the emerging trends in our profession, says Melanie Dixon, director of professional practice at the college. In Ontario, post-secondary education in this field typically includes a combination of theoretical and hands-on experience. Once a student in early childhood education finishes their program, they have to register with the college and maintain their membership through an annual renewal process. As the regulatory body for the profession, the college is legally authorized to set the qualifications and requirements for early childhood educators.

might lead to challenging behaviour. The college requires RECEs to remain knowledgeable about current evidence-based research and to transfer that knowledge into practice, and the new guideline directs them to research on brain development and self-regulation. It also teaches new ways of dealing with any challenging behaviours requiring more attention. “We used to use the term 'behaviour management' to describe how educators would address challenging behaviours, but now we know that just trying to manage and direct a child's behaviour isn't effective and isn't enough, Dixon reveals. “Another important part of creating positive interactions is the role RECEs play in helping children develop the skills to self-regulate, and the guideline talks about helping them become aware of their emotions, and how to offer them strategies for coping, Dixon adds. We can look forward to further improvements in the care our children receive from early childhood educators this September, when the College implements a mandatory ongoing learning program for RECEs to upgrade their skills. 5 tips for talking to your kids about vaccinations

(NC) Parents are responsible for their children's well-being and there are few ways to better protect a child's health than through immunization. Vaccinating your child is one of the

simplest ways to keep them safe from preventable deadly diseases. But as easy as it is to schedule a doctor's appointment and get those life-saving shots, talking to your kids about

vaccination can be tough. Here are some parent-tested tips to help you both get through it — remember, the more they know, the smoother the doctor's visit will be.

4 tips for summer road trips with your pet (NC) Long road trips are often a highlight of the summer for Canadians, but they always involve lots of planning and preparation to make sure you don't end up at the lake without a bathing suit. Don't forget to include your beloved furry friend in your plans, by making sure to pack their necessities and favourite goodies. Before hitting the road, keep your pet happy and healthy with these tips for a pet-friendly trip. 1. Make sure they're comfortable. Confining your dog or cat to a small space for an extended period of time can make them anxious, so it's important to provide them with familiar comforts. It's also best to ease them into longer car trips, and wise to ensure that your road trip isn't the animal's first time in a vehicle. If your pet is going to be riding in their crate,

include their favourite toys to help keep them entertained. 2. Have their medical documents with you. Many pet owners leave for a vacation with their dog or cat and don't think to bring their pet's medical information with them. If your pet gets sick while you're travelling, having their medical history available provides vital information that may help the vet decide on the best treatment.

3. Make frequent stops. Plan your stops ahead of time to ensure they happen in pet-friendly areas, but be flexible if you notice your pet is becoming agitated. 4. Bring a variety of food. When on the go, both wet and dry pet food have their own conveniences — dry food makes feeding pets easy and keeps clean-up to a minimum, and offering wet food with fresh water at rest stops helps keep your dog hydrated. According to a recent survey, more than half of Canadians are only feeding their pet wet food occasionally, or never at all — but this is especially important during the summer to keep your pet cool and comfortable. You can find more information and tips on mixed feeding at petmixedfeeding.ca.

1. Tell the truth. While you don't need to reveal every single detail about the process before heading to the doctor, you want your child to trust you so be honest with them about what to expect. If they ask if the shot will hurt, say it might, but only for a few seconds. 2. Don't avoid difficult questions. Stay calm and speak with a smile. Your confidence in the vaccination process will reassure your child that everything is going to be okay. 3. Get creative. There's a reason many doctors give children lollipops after their checkups — it's a reward for being cooperative and brave. You don't need to rely on sweets though. Instead, go for a healthier alternative that includes some bonding time with you and tell your child that after the shot is over you will read them their favourite book or take them to the playground. 4. Don't get frustrated with your child if they are resisting. Talk to them and your doctor to find solutions. Scheduling only one shot per visit is a great way to reduce their fears and make the experience more manageable. If your child has older siblings or cousins, have these wiser kids they look up to speak to them about how quick and easy getting a vaccination is. 5. Educate your child on the importance of vaccination. Don't forget to mention how lucky we are in Canada to have them. Explain that in many countries children get very ill because they don't have access to vaccinations. You can even hop online and show them some of the great work being done by organizations like UNICEF which, alongside Kiwanis and the Canadian government, is working to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, saving lives with simple vaccinations. Find out more about the importance of vaccinations and the work that UNICEF is doing alongside Kiwanis and the Government of Canada at www.unicef.ca/eliminate. Advertise in

48 hours in Dubai: What to see and do (NC) If you're visiting one of the world's hottest tourist destinations, you want to know the best insider tips to make the most of your time. Mourad Mekhdjian, service director for Air Canada, was on the airline's inaugural flight to Dubai and has explored the city from every angle. Follow his priceless expert advice to navigate the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, and get there in style with non-stop flights via Toronto on Air Canada's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. See everything with a bus tour: If you're on a tight schedule, Mekhdijan advises starting with a HopOn, Hop-off bus tour. This will give you an overview of major attractions and everything the city has to offer, including new Dubai, old Dubai, the waterfront, and Palm Islands — some of the largest

man-made islands in the world. Use the tour to decide which sights you want to spend more time checking out on foot. Splurge here, save there: A common tourist concern is that Dubai is an expensive city, but Mekhdjian says it's surprisingly affordable. As the world's tallest structure, Burj Khalifa is a mustsee, but Mekhdjian recommends saving by skipping the pricey elevator ride to the

top. Instead, get spectacular panoramic views of the city by splurging on a visit to Vault, an exclusive bar on the 71st and 72nd floors of the JW Marriot Marquis Dubai. The menu isn't exactly inexpensive, but you can save with daily late afternoon drink specials or come for ladies night on Tuesdays where women receive three complimentary drinks. Eat this, and that: Mekhdjian

says there are plenty of amazing, reasonably-priced restaurants all over the city. His top pick is Abd El Wahab, which boasts affordable fare and a wrap-around terrace that offers breathtaking views of a water show and the Burj Khalifa. Other favourites include the Reem El Bawadi and the Jumeirach Beach Residence area, which has plenty of beautiful interconnected restaurants. Go on a desert safari: This tour on camel lets you experience an “oasis of grandeur” and includes a bonfire, dinner and belly dancing. Mekhdjian especially appreciates this new perspective on the desert because it's the first thing he sees when flying into Dubai. Other tours are on 4 by 4 vehicles or quad bikes and let you ride the sand dunes. Good to know: Most locals have a good understanding of English, so communication barriers won't be a problem. It can go up to 50 C, so be sure to pack light clothing, a hat and sunscreen. Finally, if you get homesick, you can always visit one of the many Tim Hortons outlets that Mekhdjian says are everywhere.

Airport security screening tips for seniors

(NC) During the busy summer months airports can get crowded and the thought of going through security screening might be stressful. But with a little preparation and these tips from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), you'll have nothing left to do except sit back, relax and wait for takeoff. 1. Pack large liquid containers in checked baggage. When packing your carry-on bag, remember that only liquids, gels and aerosols of 100 mL or less in a one-litre clear, resealable plastic bag are accepted. Larger items like shampoo, toothpaste, creams, shaving cream, perfume and suntan lotion over 100 mL must be packed in your checked baggage. 2. Keep your medication with you. The 100 mL limit on liquids, gels and aerosols in your carry-on doesn't apply to medication — whether it's prescribed or over-the-counter. Just be ready to present them separately to the screening officers for inspection. 3. Arrive early and ask for help, if needed. The more time you have to go through security, the less stress you'll feel. If you have difficulty lifting or carrying your bags, advise airline staff when you check in. At the checkpoint, look for the family/special needs line if you need more time or assistance to move through security. Have your boarding pass ready to present to the screening officer and place your cell phone and other small electronic equipment, coins, keys and small metal items in your carry-on. Be sure to let screening officers know if you have any medical devices or metal implants.
