Trudeau suggests China improve its image by tightening ties with Canada Justin Trudeau delivered a message to powerful business leaders in Beijing on Tuesday, shortly after his plane touched down: China needs a little more Canada. The prime minister tried to sell China on the idea that strengthening its connection to Canada would ease international concerns about the stunning rise of the economic superpower. Trudeau made the pitch during the first event of his week-long visit to China, where he aims to improve Canada's gloomy growth prospects by deepening business ties with the rapidly growing Asian country. "Around the world there is anxiety around trade, there is anxiety around China," Trudeau told a question-andanswer session at the China Entrepreneur Club. Trudeau argued it's because Canada is more open to trade than many countries right now and because of its "deep friendship" with China that goes back genera-

tions. Canada, Trudeau added, can help China when it comes to governance and rule-of-law issues as well as global fears about the "tremendous appetite" of Chinese entrepreneurs and companies as they seek out foreign investments and

partnerships. "This isn't always well received by populations and governments around the world," he said. "China should be — and is — confident and successful enough to know that it should be able to ask for advice and take

suggestions about how to be better for its citizens, better to build a greater future." He only mentioned human rights once during an event that lasted longer than an hour. Since last year's election win, Trudeau's Liberal government has taken a somewhat cautious approach to China amid public concerns in Canada over the country's human-rights record. But this trip could move things forward. The event was moderated by Jack Ma, founder of the Alibaba e-commerce giant. He said Canada is in a "position to help China position itself in a very positive way on the world stage." In his closing remarks, Ma predicted the Canadian-Chinese bond would grow stronger. "We should be open to the world and open to the future," Ma said. Trudeau travelled to China for his first official visit with wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau and seven-year-old daughter Ella-Grace.

Canadians charged in Australia after $23-million cocaine haul found in cruise ship cabins THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SYDNEY, Australia -- Three Canadian cruise ship passengers were charged with drug smuggling Monday after police in Australia allegedly found 95 kilograms of cocaine in their cabin luggage. The haul valued at 31 million Australian dollars (US$23 million) was the largest seizure in Australia of narcotics carried by passengers of a cruise ship or airliner, Australian Border Force commander Tim Fitzgerald said. Andre Tamine, 63, Isabelle Lagace, 28, and Melina Roberce, 22, were arrested Sunday after the MS Sea Princess, operated by California-based Princess Cruises, berthed in Sydney. The three did not enter pleas when they were charged in the Sydney Central Local Court with importing a commercial quantity of cocaine.

They face potential life sentences if convicted. The trio will remain in custody until their next court appearance on Oct. 26. The three Canadians had boarded the ship at the British port city of Southampton. Police are investigating whether they boarded with the drugs or sourced them from one of several South American ports the ship visited on its way to Australia. On Sunday, Australian Border Force officers boarded the ship when it berthed in Sydney Harbour and, with the help of detector dogs, searched a number

of passenger cabins. Fitzgerald alleged 35 kilograms of cocaine were found in suitcases in a cabin the women shared and 60 kilograms of the drug were found in the man's luggage in a separate cabin. He thanked the U.S. Department of Homelands Security and the Canada Border Services Agency for helping identify the three as "high-risk passengers" among the 1,800 on board. Clive Murray, assistant commissioner of strategic border command with the Australian Border Force, said the incident was an example of international co-operation in the fight against international drug syndicates. "These syndicates should be on notice that the Australian Border Force is aware of all of the different ways they attempt to smuggle drugs into our country and we are working with a range of international agencies to stop them," he said.

Etobicoke doctor charged with defrauding OHIP An Ontario doctor who was recently ordered to pay the CBC more than $1.6 million in legal costs after losing a libel lawsuit against the public broadcaster has now been charged with defrauding the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. The OPP has issued an arrest warrant for Dr. Ranjit Kumar Chandra, 78, of Etobicoke. He’s charged with fraud over $5,000 and is believed to be out of the country. The Health Fraud Investigation Unit at the OPP is continuing to investigate as they are unable to provide an exact amount in the fraud loss to OHIP at the time. Police confirmed he is the same Ranjit Chandra involved in the CBC lawsuit. According to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), Chandra is an active doctor with no prior discipline history who practised at four clinics in the Greater Toronto Area. A college spokeswoman confirmed that he is now the subject of an

ongoing investigation. William Boktor is the director of the Chinguacousy and Sandalwood Medical Centre in Brampton, where he said Chandra practiced as an allergist once a week for the past four years. About a month ago, he said he was contacted by the CPSO and told that Chandra was suspected of billing fraud. “Of course, I sent him an official email and told him he will not be able to practise with us,” Boktor said, describing how investigators from the College and the OPP have visited his clinic to ask about Chandra. Boktor added that he believes Chandra is in India, as he frequently travelled there to visit family. A man that answered the phone at Chandra’s Etobicoke condo on Wednesday also said that the doctor is in India. Chandra, a former professor at Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador, was the subject of a

2006 CBC documentary called The Secret Life of Dr. Chandra, which reported that he published fraudulent research in medical journals. He then sued the CBC and a number of individuals who worked on the show, but his claim was dismissed by an Ontario civil jury. The jury concluded that the broadcast was defamatory “given the natural and ordinary meaning of the words it contained,” wrote Superior Court Justice Graeme Mew in his ruling. However, “the jury accepted the defence of justification, finding that the words used in the broadcast were true” and dismissed the claim, Mew wrote. He ordered Chandra in November 2015 to pay the CBC and the employees he was suing $1.6 million, “payable forthwith.” By JACQUES GALLANT Staff Reporter ALEX BALLINGALLNews

Students stabbed during deadly brawl at Cornell University ITHACA, N.Y. -- An Ithaca College student fatally stabbed at Cornell University was attacked while trying to help a fellow student amid a series of fights after a weekend party, the slain man's sister said Monday. Anthony Nazaire, a 19-year-old sophomore majoring in business administration from New York City, and his friend were stabbed early Sunday as several hundred people were leaving a fraternity-sponsored party at the Cornell student union, authorities said. Police haven't said what touched off the melee. Kiara Nazaire said she had spoken with her brother's friend and was told Anthony was trying to get him away from a confrontation when their assailant struck. "He was defending his friend," she said, fighting back tears outside her family's apartment. "It wasn't to fight. He was pulling him away -- and the coward just attacked them." Nazaire said her brother had been visiting friends at Cornell and had developed an "upstate New York family" there. She said her family went to Ithaca on Sunday but returned early Monday with little information from investigators about the progress of their investigation. "I know the cops are going to do everything they have to do to make sure Anthony is at peace," she said. "We know justice is going to be served." Police have not named any suspects in the stabbing. The attack followed a Saturday night party organized by Omega Psi Phi, a national fraternity of black men, at Willard Straight Hall as part of a series of events under the umbrella of Cornell's Black Students United group. Other "Say It Loud 2016" events included orientation sessions for incoming black students, ice cream socials, a Labor Day weekend barbecue and a game night. Investigators said they were interviewing witnesses and believe based on surveillance footage that some captured the killing on video. Ithaca College President Tom Rochon said Anthony Nazaire graduated from Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School and was a member of the executive board of Brothers4Brothers, an Ithaca College student organization "dedicated to empowering men of colour on our campus." Kiara Nazaire said her brother wanted to be an entrepreneur. "He wanted to be a black man with a bank," she said. "He wanted to get his hands on anything he could turn to gold." Outside the student union Monday, Cornell senior Sonya Qamar said the killing was unsettling. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Former prime minister Stephen Harper resigns as MP

OTTAWA—Former prime minister Stephen Harper announced Friday his long-expected resignation from the Commons and his Calgary seat in the low-key fashion he adopted after losing his majority government last fall.

He said Harper had strong convictions about the role Canada should play in the world. Trudeau said that while they disagreed, “I certainly know that he as a former leader of a G7 country will have contributions to make and I wish him success.”

He posted a taped video statement to his social media accounts, Twitter and Facebook, reading out a letter also released on Commons letterhead that began with a formal and stilted: “Greetings, fellow Calgarians and fellow Canadians.” Harper, 57, gave no indication of his career plans, which include launching a global consulting business, saying only that he was grateful to voters, party members and Canadians for letting him serve “as I bid farewell to the Parliament of Canada and prepare

“His service as prime minister, and before that, as party leader, to country has never been questioned.” Trudeau told reporters at a news conference in Saguenay, Que. that he’ll remember, in the aftermath of the Parliament Hill attack on Oct. 22, 2014 that Harper and other party leaders hugged on the floor of the Commons, “physically” demonstrating a united front.

Harper bade farewell as leader to his party faithful at the Conservative convention in May in a rare public speech that echoed themes of his goodbye statement Friday. In July, Harper angered many Conservatives at his annual summer barbecue by endorsing Jason Kenney, his former cabinet colleague and Calgary political neighbour, while Kenney’s opponents sat in the audience, as the leader to do what he did for national conservatives: unite the rightwing parties in Alberta.

Toronto Police release causes of death in triple murder involving crossbow Toronto Police have released the causes of death of three people at a suburban home in Toronto last Thursday, at least one of which involved a crossbow. Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone told reporters Monday that a female victim was killed by strangulation, a man died by “crossbow bolt” and a third man was killed by a “single arrowhead stab wound to the neck.” The woman and one of the males were found dead in a garage at the residential property in Scarborough, while the third victim was found on a driveway, Carbone said.Police had responded to a 911 report of a stabbing, he said. Brett Ryan, 35, was arrested Friday and faces three charges of first-degree murder. Carbone said Ryan and another person were treated in hospital after Thursday’s incident. The other man has been released from hospital. Asked whether the other individual will face any charges, Carbone said police are still investigating. “If it’s appropriate to lay some charges in the case of that other individual then we will do so,” he added. Carbone appealed for witnesses who may have spoken to Ryan in the days before the murders. “Our role is to try and find out what set this off,” he said. The detective said an apartment on Queen’s Quay near Toronto’s waterfront was “associated” with Ryan. It was searched by the bomb squad Thursday and “items” were found but they “were not of

any danger to members of the public,” he added. In 2008, Ryan was accused of robbing more than a dozen banks in the Toronto area, and nicknamed the “Fake Beard Bandit.” In January 2009, he was convicted on charges related to the bank robberies and served three years and nine months behind bars. Carbone said he is not aware of any police dealings with Ryan since then. Since his release, Ryan may have been attending a local university, said the detective. Carbone said he’s looking to speak with anyone who communicated with Ryan, particularly on Aug. 25. He urged possible witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers or call him at 416-808-7400 -By CTVNews

Arrival of second influx of Syrians will be smoother: immigration groups VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Most immigrant support groups say this fall’s expected surge in Syrian refugee families will be far more manageable than the impromptu turmoil that characterized the first wave of arrivals, which began nearly 10 months ago. Chris Friesen with the Immigrant Services Society of BC says welcoming tens of thousands of people so quickly and with such little notice taught useful lessons and fostered valuable partnerships that will help smooth the process later this year. Friesen says those lessons include expanded children’s programming, Arrival of second influx of Syrians will be smoother: immigration groups more efficient housing support system and better measures to accommodate large families. Apple expected to show new iPhone at event next week

SAN FRANCISCO (NEWS 1130) – Apple is expected to show off a new iPhone next week when the company holds its fall product launch event in San Francisco. The tech giant announced the date for the Sept. 7 launch by sending out invitations to technology journalists and industry analysts on Monday. Apple didn’t provide any details, in keeping with its usual practice, but it traditionally announces one or two new iPhone models at its annual September event. Apple may also show new models or features for other products like the Apple Watch or Macbook computer. The Cupertino, California company sold more than 214 million iPhones over the last 12 months. But sales are down from a year ago, and analysts will be watching closely to see what changes Apple has made in the newest models.

says having months of preparation time, as opposed to just weeks, will also make a big difference. Immigration Canada has brought in 19,000 governmentassisted refugees so far this year. That means 6,000 more are slated to arrive by the end of December in order for the federal government to meet its target of welcoming 25,000 government-assisted Syrian refugees in 2016.

Vancouver to host world class sporting event VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Tourism in Vancouver gets another boost as the inaugural Americas Masters Games come to town. The 5,000 athletes are from more than 52 different countries and are over the age of 30, and the province says they will be contributing to the economy while they’re here. Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour, “This is a remarkable time for sport tourism in BC. The Americas Masters Games is one of a number of major sporting events attracting visitors from around the world to our province. Last year was a remarkable one for tourism and 2016 is shaping up to be another great year with over 2.3 million visitors in the first six months – a 12% increase over 2015. These increases create year-round jobs, not just in hosting cities but in every region of our province.”

Sudoku Solutions for last Issue Rob Newman with Sport BC says the history of the city’s hosting helps attract more events. “Because of hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics and the FIFA Women’s World Cup last year, people are starting to see Vancouver on the world stage,” he

explains. “There is certainly an appetite on behalf of the City of Vancouver and now this stakeholder group to attract international events to Vancouver, we definitely have the infrastructure.” This adds to the already record tourism numbers for Vancouver in 2016.

E-commerce giant urges businesses to write PM over Canada Post dispute VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Ecommerce giant eBay urged Canadian businesses on Monday to write to the prime minister and demand a legislated end to the labour dispute at Canada Post as a threatened work disruption was once again put on hold. Launch of the letter-writing campaign came as contract negotiations between the Crown agency and its biggest union stretched into overtime. While government officials expressed optimism that a 24-hour extension of the talks would break a months-long impasse over pensions and wages, small and medium-sized businesses have heard it before, said eBay Canada managing director Andrea Stairs. “Negotiations are ongoing, but we don’t see a solution coming down the pipe,” Stairs said in a telephone interview. “So we really felt it was time for the prime minister to get involved.”

The letter, emailed to eBay sellers and addressed to Justin Trudeau’s Langevin Block office in Ottawa, encourages the prime minister to “explore legislative solutions to the current situation” at Canada Post and warns that businesses are being harmed by uncertainty about whether parcels will be delivered. “EBay sellers, like other small and medium businesses across Canada, have been dealing with this uncertainty for months,” the letter states. “We have been forced to adapt our businesses and make other shipping arrangements for our

goods.” Canada Post has been bargaining with its employees for over nine months, but both sides were far apart as of late last week on key issues including pension changes for new employees and pay scales for rural postal workers. Talks continued over the weekend with the aid of a special mediator and threatened job action by the union’s 51,000 members was halted under a 24hour extension aimed at reaching a lastminute agreement before midnight Monday night. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers had announced on the weekend it would begin job action on Monday by having its members refuse to work overtime on a rotating basis, starting in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. But the plan was halted when both sides agreed to a request for more time from the mediator, who was brought into the dispute Friday.

The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-by9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Some cells already contain numbers, known as givens. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Every row, every column and every 3-by-3 subgrid should contain digits 1 to 9 only.

Surrogacy Bill against commercial surrogacy which is a ‘money making racket’: BJP

| innovative | independent inclusive cl d

Mumbai [India], Aug. 27 (ANI): Swatting away criticism of the recently drafted Surrogacy Bill, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday asserted that the Centre had to introduce it as commercial surrogacy had become a ‘money making racket’ and was not benefitting genuine cases where people needed to be helped. “When it comes to the surrogacy bill, we must realise that our government differentiated between commercial surrogacy which had become a money making racket and genuine cases where people needed to be helped,” BJP leader Shaina NC told ANI here. Asserting that there is a provision within the law which suggests that if one cannot conceive a child, they may use surrogacy in terms of a relative to help them out, Shaina added that there are several other similar clauses put in place by the government to help people out. “I don’t think anyone in their right

senses will want to reject this bill,” Shaina said. However, the Congress came down heavily on the Centre, saying that the Bill resembled a ‘draft from the Stone Age’ and was brought out by "surrogate organisations" like the RSS and the VHP. "Why are they restricting surrogacy only to married couples? Surrogacy could be desired by widows, live-in partners and NRIs among others. They have delegated

the drafting of this surrogacy bill perhaps to the surrogate RSS and VHP. This is a surrogate delegation to surrogate agencies,” Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval for the introduction of Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016. The Bill aims at prohibiting commercial surrogacy and allowing ethical surrogacy to needy infertile couples. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had said that the bill was introduced as India emerged as a surrogacy hub for couples, and added that the government is aware of unethical practices. Criticising the practice of commercial surrogacy, Swaraj said, "What started as a need, has now turned into a hobby." The Bill will be introduced during the winter session of Parliament. (ANI)

Sucha Singh Chhotepur sacked as AAP’s Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur was on Friday sacked as the Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab convener following allegations of seeking bribe for allotting party tickets. The Political Affairs Committee (PAC), the highest decision-making body of the party, took the decision during a meeting at AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Delhi residence late Friday evening. It also constituted a two-member committee to probe the allegations. Chhotepur, however, has not been sacked from the party. AAP has not yet named a replacement for Chhotepur, saying in a statement that it would not appoint a state convener till the panel submits its inquiry report. MP Bhagwant Mann, a member of the PAC, told The Indian Express that the decision on Chhotepur was taken in a specially convened meeting regarding 10 emails that were received by the leadership on Friday saying Chhotepur had promised party tickets in lieu of money. The inquiry panel was asked to conduct a thorough probe into the sting operation after meeting the complainants and also give a “proper hearing” to Chhotepur. Pregnant woman forced to walk 6 kms to hospital in flood Chhatarpur (Madhya Pradesh) [India], 27 (ANI): In what could be a slap on the face of the civil society, a case of shocking apathy has come to fore, wherein a pregnant woman in Madhya Pradesh was forced to walk six kilometres through a waterlogged area to reach the hospital to deliver her baby. The incident was reported from the state’s Chhatarpur district, when a family called for a government ambulance, but the hospital said it would take half an hour. The mother-to-be, named Sandhya Yadav, a resident of Simaria village, had to endure hardship after state government's Janani Express (Ambulance) didn't reach in the said time. Sandhya told ANI that she gave birth as soon as she reached the hospital. She also said that this was not the first such incident in her village and that pregnant women have been transported in folding beds to the hospital.

Active involvement of parents can keep kids healthier Washington D.C., (ANI): A recent research has found that parents who are directly and actively engaged with their children ensure healthy living and are significantly more likely to see their kids match up to Canadian guidelines when it comes to physical activity, healthy eating and screen time. Heather Manson, chief of health promotion, chronic disease and injury prevention at PHO, reveals, “In Canada, more than 30 per cent of children are overweight or obese. Given the important role parents play in the lives of their children, we were keen to determine what types of parental behaviours were more likely to be associated with healthy living

for their children. We learned that simple encouragement is not enough active parental support is essential.” Manson and fellow PHO researchers looked at the relationships between parental support for their children's physical activity, healthy eating and screen time behaviours and the likelihood that their child was meeting Canadian guidelines for healthy living. Parents who reported taking their children to places where they could be physically active (e.g., parks, playgrounds, sports programs) were twice as likely to report that their kids met physical activity guidelines. Another finding was that parents who took part in physical activity with

their children were 35 per cent more likely to report that their kids met physical activity guidelines compared to those who did not. Canadian guidelines suggest that kids between 5-17 years old take part

in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity per day. Parents who served raw fruits and vegetables as snacks between meals were almost five times more likely to report that their kids met fruit and vegetable guidelines. Parents who regularly eat meals with their family away from the TV were 67 per cent more likely to report that their kids consumed the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables compared to parents who did not. Canadian guidelines recommend 4-8 servings per day, depending on age and sex of child. Parents, who enforced rules about their kids' screen time were twice as likely to report that their kids met screen time guidelines. Interestingly, the researchers found that kids were less likely to meet screen time guidelines if families watch TV together or if there were several TVs in the house. Canadian guidelines recommend that kids 5-17 years of age limit recreational screen time to no more than two hours per day. (ANI)

Nepali Congress calls forKathmandu, interim local polls (ANI): The parliamentary party of the opposition Nepali Congress has urged the Pushpa Kumar Dahal-led government to hold interim local elections under the existing structure to sort out the confusion over the number of local units in the federal set-up. The Local Body Restructuring Commission (LBRC), formed to determine the number and boundaries of local units (village and municipal councils), has proposed 565 local units across the country. But according to a Kathmandu Post report, the Nepali Congress has found fault with the LBRC’s approach and believes that the proposed number of local bodies is “too less” and would not be effective in delivering services to the public. The Nepali Congress is of the view that holding local level elections is key to implementing the constitution, and failure to do so, could throw the statute implementation process into limbo. It said that it has decided to hold talks with other political parties on the issue. Under current structure, there are 3,157 village development committees and 217 municipalities. (ANI with inputs)

Recently, the veteran actor went out of his way to help a friend he has worked with in the past. Ajit Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan share a rapport not many know of. Ajit Sinha, who has in the past worked as an associate director in movies like Khiladi and Baazigar is making his directorial debut with Wah Taj, a movie dedicated towards a lot of unresolved social issues. The debut director in an uncanny conversation requested Mr. Bachchan to do a voice over for an integral part of the movie. A Flying Jatt Movie Review

A Jatt superhero who bumbles and fumbles? Who behaves like a little boy around his formidable ‘bebe’, and is all shy and tongue-tied around a hot babe? Who has, haha, a fear of heights? Sounds like a barrel of fun, no? The first half of A Flying Jatt is not afraid to be silly and is very enjoyable. Tiger Shroff plays a martial arts teacher in a school where he strives lamely to catch his students’ eye, as well as a pretty colleague whom we know is interested in the environment because she clutches

a couple of books on the subject to her bosom. No one ever goes to class: it is that kind of film. The pollution, we soon learn, is Enemy No One, riding on the back of the greedy capitalist Malhotra (Kay Kay Menon, camping it up madly) and the evil monster-dipped-into-the-vat-ofchemicals Raka (Nathan Jones, boasting an old-fashioned Bollywood name for a modern-day ‘gora’ villain). When the Flying Jatt’s mum sends him off with the classic ‘jaa, duniya ko bacha’, we laugh out loud. Because, you know, that’s what superheroes do: once they are in costumeand-cape and armed with their super-powers, we know all will be well. Tiger Shroff is a thing of beauty when he flexes his splendid, impossibly toned muscles. He dances like a dream. And because he is still a work-in-progress actor to whom fumbling and bumbling and being awkward comes naturally, he is a good fit for his character, even if

it’s cobbled together from familiar caped crusaders: bits of Superman and Spiderman and our own home-grown Krrish. He gets able support from Singh as the proud Sikhni with superpowers of her own: no baddie ever invented can be a match for Bollywood moms. And from Gaurav Pandey as his brother-cumbest-pal. Fernandez has to jump up and down and squeal girlishly, when she is not dancing alongside the Jatt, or not being taken on an aerial survey, all of which she delivers on. The second half goes south. The film starts getting preachy and heavy. A bad guy who fattens on garbage and waste is a great stroke, but to keep

belabouring the point is pointless. Except for a couple of effective scenes, the enormous Jones is a bore. And without the funny bits which kept the pre-interval parts afloat, the faults start glaring. The song-and-dances, bunged in just to show off Tiger’s limber moves, are a drag: Bollywood superheroes can save the world only after the ‘naachgaana’ is over. This could have been such a rollicking film, especially for kids —it had all the ingredients, and an engaging start, fronted by a hero who is light on his feet. Too bad it ends up being a promo for Swachch Bharat. By Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express

'Happy Bhag Jayegi' - A light-hearted, feel-good film Movie Review: Writer-Director Mudassar Aziz's "Happy Bhag Jayegi" is a loosely inspired, Indian version of the Julia Roberts starrer, Hollywood film, "Runaway Bride". But unlike in the English film, the Punjabi bride Harpreet Kaur aka Happy (Diana Penty), in this romantic comedy, elopes to marry the person she loves. After being spotted romancing with her college sweetheart Gurpreet Singh aka Guddu (Ali Fazal), Happy is forced by her father, essayed by Kanwaljit Singh, to marry the local politician Daman Singh Bagga (Jimmy Shergill). But on her wedding day, the feisty Happy leaves Bagga stranded at the mandap, by jumping on to a truck, which is supposed to take her to Guddu. But instead of landing her, at her

destination, Happy gets transported to the residence of a reluctant politician Bilal Ahmed (Abhay Deol) in Lahore, Pakistan. What follows is a series of manipulative and contrived negotiations along with situational scuffles that propel this tale forward. But what makes the film intriguing apart from Happy's impulsive instinct to run away, is the fulfillment of her journey in a country that is at cross-purpose with India. This cross-border drama adds to the excitement. It is also the stimulating and realistic performances that makes this film a treat to watch. Diana Penty as the lively, determined and bubbly girl, who would do anything for love, is the surprise package. She is simply natural and impressive as she lives her character

to the tee. Ali Fazal as Happy's unsure love Guddu and the Pakistani actress Momal Shaikh, who plays Bilal Ahmed's love interest, are both notably striking. Abhay Deol slips into the role of an unenthusiastic son of an ambitious politician with ease. And his presence does not raise the bar of the film. After a long time, Jimmy Shergill delivers a performance of some substance. As Bagga, he is rugged and stimulating. Mudassar Aziz's writing is fascinating. His dialogues are packed with punch as he plays with words, in Hindi and Urdu. Also, the gags are taut, fresh and brilliantly inter-laid in the plot.

The graph of the narrative has its crests and trough but never is there a moment of equilibrium. Also his climax, though a riot, does not have the zing of a mad-caper. Nevertheless, the film has a strong message which is emphasised in the song with the lyrics, "Sau qwaab hai, ek zindagi.' It significantly, encapsulates the premise of the film, "Follow your heart." With moderate production values, the film is technically well-crafted. The visuals, back-ground score and music are of fine calibre and mesh well in the final flow. Overall, "Happy Bhag Jayegi" is a feel-good, light-hearted drama that does not need to be taken seriously.

Expert advice on how to beat the flu (NC) The flu is a common ailment that can have very serious consequences. Every year roughly 12,200 people are hospitalized and 3,500 die from complications of the flu, according to Health Canada. Fortunately, there are a number of simple precautions you can take to help maintain good immune and overall health during flu season. For advice on how to make sure the flu doesn't get the best of you this winter, we spoke to Hans Epp, pharmacist and owner of a Shoppers Drug Mart, and MĂŠlanie LĂŠgarĂŠ, registered dietitian at Loblaws. How important is it to get vaccinated? How effective are flu vaccines? “Depending on how well the vaccine is matched to this year's common viruses, 70 to 90 per cent of flu cases can be averted through vaccination,â€? explains Epp. “These days, you can get vaccinated by an injection-certified pharmacist without an appointment at your local Shoppers Drug Mart — just walk-in.â€? In addition to getting vaccinated, what are some preventative measure people can take? “Getting between seven and eight hours of sleep each night, drinking plenty of fluids, eating healthy foods, and staying active will go a long way in staying healthy throughout the cold and flu season,â€? says Epp. “But perhaps the

within our power to stop the spread of influenza. At my pharmacy, I'm seeing a growing awareness of flu prevention techniques and I'm confident we can move the needle even further on flu prevention this year.

Do this one simple thing to protect waters

most effective means of avoiding the flu is as easy as practicing good hygiene and washing your hands regularly with soap and water.â€? What should we be eating during flu season? “Citrus fruits, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, garlic, and seafood should be staples on everyone's grocery list,â€? recommends LĂŠgarĂŠ. “These items contain vitamins and nutrients that are important to maintaining good health and immune function.â€? Are there specific vitamins people should be looking for? “Knowing which vitamins are found in which foods will help you make the

right food choices. For example, while it may be common knowledge that citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, many people may not be aware that nuts and seeds contain vitamin E, or that beans and legumes are rich in zinc,â€? says LĂŠgarĂŠ. “All these vitamins and minerals are essential for maintaining good health and immune function, which is especially important during flu season.â€? Any additional advice you'd like to share? “Although we all feel the effects of the flu, young children and the elderly are the most vulnerable,â€? says Epp. “I think we all share a duty to these vulnerable populations to do everything

(NC) Home to thousands of lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands, Canada claims a fifth of the world's freshwater and has the world's longest ocean coastline bordering the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Plentiful water comes with responsibilities though — because we value our water ecosystems and the wildlife that inhabit them, we must do our part to care for them. Taking part in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is one simple way to help. “Litter and debris have become a critical issue in all our water ecosystems, from lakes and rivers to every ocean coastline, explains Kate Le Souef, manager of the Shoreline Cleanup. “We see animals entangled in netting, strapping bands and six-pack rings; we know fish, birds and turtles mistake litter for food; we've discovered that harmful chemicals can leach into aquatic environments from trash. The need for action has never been more urgent.

Is there a “right time to sell a home?

4 tips to sell your home quickly and easily NC) Once a home is listed it can take days, weeks or even months for it to sell. During that time sellers play an important role by keeping the home ready for viewing by buyers at all times. There are several things a home owner can do to assist in the sale of their home, explains Ray Ferris, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. Use his top tips to make sure your home is ready for viewings with Realtors and potential buyers. 1. Be flexible. Arguably, a seller's biggest responsibility is to allow the showing of their home at any reasonable time, and to provide a key for access when they're not there. says Ferris. Although timing may not always be convenient for a seller, they need to be prepared to make the occasional concession to a buyer's schedule. 2. Try to be away from the house when it's shown. Before you leave the house each day, be sure it's clean and tidy, beds are made and dishes are done and put away. Put pets in

a place where they won't disturb your visitors. 3. Remain accessible so your Realtor can reach you easily. Be mindful that buyers may have different schedules than you. By ensuring you're easily reachable to your Realtor, they can quickly answer any questions potential buyers may have and notify you of any offers. 4. Keep your Realtor apprised of any changes relating to your home or its sale. Occasionally someone driving by a “for sale sign may knock on the owner's door to request a quick look. “Despite the temptation, do not let them into your home, warns Ferris. “Thank them for their interest, ask for their name and telephone number and explain that you'll pass this information along to your Realtor. Remember that you've hired your Realtor to pre-screen all prospects before they see your home. This is important for a number of reasons, not least of which is your personal security.

(NC) Once you've made the decision to sell your home, you probably want to complete the process as soon as possible, but you also want to sell for the highest price you can obtain. Cycles in the market driven by the overall economy can create a shortage of homes or a surplus of homes. “In a 'seller's market', where many buyers are competing for relatively few homes, speed and top price can go hand-inhand, explains Ray Ferris, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. “However, in a 'buyer's market', when buyers can take their time to choose among several properties, you may discover there is a trade-off between speed and price. Discuss your specific requirements with your Realtor, who can help you decide upon an asking price that will also help meet your timing requirements. Economic fluctuations can be national in scope or affect only certain pockets of the country. Changing interest rates also influence real estate market cycles. “Staying aware of the things that influence the cycles in real estate will help you decide when to place your house on the market and how to price it realistically, says Ferris. “If you don't have time to

follow the market, a Realtor can always give you up-to-date information and advice. Seasons and the weather can also affect buyer demand. For example, fewer buyers may be willing to tread through snow to look at homes for sale during winter months, but there may also be less competition between sellers with fewer houses on the market. Conversely, spring tends to be an active time for real estate sales. Homes and gardens start looking good again and buyers come out of hibernation. Buying in spring appeals to parents because they can move into their new home during summer and settle in before the next school year begins. “Homes are sold throughout the year, so think of the season as only one factor in determining when you'll put your house on the market, suggests Ferris.

3 things to look for in back-to-school tech 2. 4K Resolution and colour accuracy:

(NC) Whether you're a techie glued to your desktop at all hours of the day or simply need a device to edit documents and watch pixel perfect video, everyone needs respectable computer equipment. Chances are, the monitor you're using right now came bundled with the desktop PC you bought a couple of years ago. But did you know there are new models that can dramatically improve your productivity and viewing experience? Since you probably spend hours every day looking at your monitor, take advantage of back-to-school time and sales to research which features experts recommend looking for.

4K monitors offer four times the resolution of full HD, and are a must-have for creative students and design and photography professionals. These monitors have exceptional detail and are well-suited for tasks where shadow, gray-scale, and crisp colour fine points are essential. Additionally, the higher the resolution, the more information that can be displayed on the screen. A curved screen also delivers an immersive experience.

3. Size:

1. Multi-tasking: You can resize windows and use split screen, which divides the display into multiple sections for different tasks. Advanced options include state-of-the-art display features like four types of picture-

in picture multiple window displays, so you can easily work on several documents at a time or type notes while watching presentations or videos. Gamers will delight with game mode,

which offers optimal first person shooter and real-time strategy settings. Freesync also provides seamless movement between the graphic card's frame rate and the monitor's refresh rate.

PC monitors generally run anywhere from 17 to 34 inches. If you're looking to replace a dual-screen system, consider buying a wider single monitor, like the new 21:9 monitor from LG that features an ultra-wide screen so you can view more. It offers enough real estate to ensure that you can watch videos while viewing multi-page documents in tiled or side-by-side formats.

When to upgrade your tablet (NC) A tech favourite for those young and old alike, tablets are a lighter, bag-friendly option for playing apps, reading books and news, watching videos, and surfing the web. They're also great for students and others who are on the go and offer many of the same features you would find on a laptop while providing easy entertainment for your downtime. With new models and sales coming out for back-to-school, there are more reasons than ever for upgrading your tablet. Here are the specs you need to look for:

Screen resolution Full high definition screens offer true colours, sharp text, and vibrant images that enhance your experience.

LG's new G Pad III features an 8 screen that lessens eyestrain with its reader mode that filters blue light and reduces intensity. The customizable settings will let you easily work (or play) longer, letting you catch-up on any assignments or missed television shows.

Getting work done Most tablets come with preinstalled office apps, but they can also be downloaded so you can type up your documents on the go. Wireless Bluetooth keyboards and other accessories can be added for additional options, and a long-lasting battery will help you get it all done without being tethered to an outlet.

Storage

Multitasking

Look for a tablet that offers a full size USB port. This allows for easy data-sharing and backing-up of all your important documents. Most tablets also come with at least 16GB of built-in memory and have expandable storage options of up to 2 TB.

Some tablets let you use two apps at the same time in split-screen mode, allowing you to drag and drop content easily. In addition to split-screen, the GPad from LG offers the QPair Connection app for seamless connectivity and productivity with your phone.
