Man charged with sexual assault, attempted murder after girl escaped from trunk of car

THE LEADER-POST REGINA — A meeting agreed to on social media to buy a cellphone has landed one man in custody charged with attempted murder and sexual assault. Kohl Alexander Elder, 19, has been charged him with attempted murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, overcoming resistance, sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, uttering threats, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, failing to comply with a probation order and possession of a controlled substance (marijuana). According to the Regina Police Service, officers were called to the General Hospital at around 1:09 a.m. Wednesday for a reported sexual assault. There, they were told a 17-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted. Police say the girl first made contact with the man through social media accounts. The girl said she wanted

India’s daughter Geeta to be brought back soon, says MEA New Delhi, Oct. 15 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said bringing Geeta back is not dependent on whether or not her parents are discovered, adding that she is the daughter of India and it is the nation’s duty to bring her back. Stating that Geeta’s Indian nationality has already been verified and very soon she will be brought to India, MEA official spokesperson Vikas Swarup said the procedure of bringing her back to India was almost complete. “We will be bringing her back to

to buy a cellphone and the man offered to sell his. The two met in person Tuesday night around 9 p.m. to make the deal at a parking lot in the Glencairn neighbourhood. The man got into the girl’s car. Then, it is alleged, he threatened her with a knife and forced her to give up her vehicle. He then allegedly drove her outside the city and sexually assaulted her. Around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the victim was placed into the trunk of the car. The suspect then drove back into the city, where she escaped while it was stopped at a red light. Elder appeared in Regina Provincial Court Thursday morning. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Tuesday for a show cause hearing.

And, if DNA testing verifies that they are indeed her parents, she will be handed over to them, if not, we have identified two institutions one in Delhi another in Indore which are meant for people with certain disabilities and we believe Geeta will find a very good and welcoming home there,” he added. After the news of Geeta’s presence went on air, many families approached the MEA, claiming that she was possibly their daughter. “External Affairs Minister Sushama Swaraj had written to Chief Ministers of various states from where these families belonged to conduct their own investigations to see if their version matched with what we knew about Geeta’s condition,” he said. “Based on that we sent three sets of photographs to Geeta in Karachi, and Geeta has now identified one set of photographs as possibly being those of her parents. At the same time, we realised that photograph is a photograph and conclusive proof of parentage can only be made known through DNA testing,” he added.

Sikhs intensify protest against desecration of Guru Granth Sahib

Health advocates hate him! Man who says he lost 60 pounds on McDonald’s diet now touring on fast-food giant’s dime Lisa Baertlein, Reuters LOS ANGELES — Former Iowa science teacher John Cisna, who says he lost 60 pounds on a six-month regimen of McDonald’s food and daily walks, has sparked outrage among public health advocates for taking his story to U.S. schools on the fastfood chain’s dime. The criticism comes as Steve Easterbrook, McDonald’s Corp’s chief executive, fights to remake the 60-year-old chain into what he calls a “modern, progressive burger company.” Part of that challenge is winning over youngsters who have seen documentaries such as “Super Size Me” and “Fast Food Nation,” and as a result view McDonald’s food as a contributor to obesity,

diabetes and other serious diseases. Cisna has tried to counter that impression, first with a book last year called My McDonald’s Diet: How I lost 37 pounds in 90 days and became a viral media an sensation, detailing experiment he said was created with his students. The goal was to stay within strict calorie limits while eating items from the hamburger chain’s menu. McDonald’s hired Cisna as a “brand ambassador” earlier this year and provides him a stipend for time and travel related to his speaking engagements, spokeswoman Lisa McComb said. She would not disclose the size of the payments, but said Cisna came up with his experiment

Ludhiana/Amritsar (Punjab), Oct. 15 (ANI): A shutdown was observed in various districts Punjab state on Thursday as Sikh organizations intensified protests against the alleged desecration of their holy book. On Monday, more than 100 pages were reportedly found scattered on a street that led to a local Sikh temple, which Sikh leaders claimed to be torn from a copy of the Holy Scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, allegedly stolen in June this year. Violence broke out in Punjab’s Kotkapura city on October 14 after Sikh protesters and police clashed, where reports of stone pelting by protestors and counter baton charge and open firing by the police came to fore. A complete shutdown was observed in the districts of Kotkapura, Bathinda, Faridkot, Barnala and Ferozepur on Thursday, said media. In Amritsar city, shops remained closed amid heavy deployment of police. “We are making every possible effort to ensure people are not being inconvenienced. Also, we are looking to it that shopkeepers who want to open their shops are not harassed or forced to shut their shops,” said Harwinder Singh, Amritsar’s Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (City-1). In Bhatinda, children were unable to reach their schools, as protestors also blocked highways and roads.

Could eating McDonald's every day, for every meal, cause someone to lose weight? A U.S. teacher did exactly that over a 90-day period during which he also took up walking

without help from McDonald’s. Thus far, Cisna has spoken mostly at the invitation of about 90 schools, predominantly colleges and high schools, said McComb. Among other things, his program includes a 20-minute documentary “540 Meals: Choices Make the Difference” and a teachers discussion guide, both of which were edited by McDonald’s, McComb said. “John’s story is not a weight loss plan, and we do not recommend that anyone eat every meal at one restaurant every day for an

extended period,” said McComb. “While the decision on how schools choose to educate and inform their students is up to them, we support John’s desire as a teacher to provide students with facts to make informed choices.” Cisna was not available for comment. Critics say the program is a new attempt by McDonald’s to hook youngsters on unhealthy food. For example, Cisna says in the video that careful planning allowed him to eat french fries nearly every day.

New drug for booze addiction comes closer to reality Washington D.C, (ANI): A team of researchers might be one step closer to finding an effective drug for alcohol dependence, bringing hope for the peope who are ready to recover from alcoholism. In two separate studies, researchers at Karolinska Institutet and the Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden show that the dopamine stabilizer OSU6162 can reduce the craving for alcohol in alcohol dependent people and normalises the level of dopamine in the brain reward system of rats that have consumed alcohol over a long period of time. However, thorough clinical studies are needed to determine if the OSU6162 also can help alcohol dependent people drink less alcohol. The results of the studies are promising, but there is still a long way to go before they have a marketable drug, says co-author Pia Steensland, adding that the socioeconomic costs of alcohol are huge, not to mention the human suffering. It is inspiring to continue working.

Roughly a million Swedes over 15 years of age drink so much alcohol that they risk damaging their health and it is estimated that some 300,000 of these people are dependent. Despite the pressing need, there are only a few approved drugs for the treatment of alcohol dependence, but their effects vary from person to person and the prescriptions rates are low. Consequently the hunt for new, more

efficacious drugs for alcohol dependence continues. Researchers think that OSU6162 can reduce the alcohol craving in dependent people by returning the downregulated levels of dopamine in their brain reward system to normal, says Steensland. The study is published in journal European Neuropsychopharmacology. (ANI)

Shahid felt intimidated sharing screen with father Pankaj Kapoor New Delhi, (ANI): Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who was recently spotted promoting his upcoming movie ‘Shaandaar’ along with Alia Bhatt, said that he felt quite intimidated sharing the screen space with his father and veteran actor Pankaj Kapoor. Expressing to media, the 34-yearold actor said, “I was very intimidated in the beginning to share screen space with him. But on the same hand, it was a big deal for me. I was excited that I would finally be getting a chance to act with

him. I hope at least five out of hundred people notice me when we are together on screen. However, it was really fun to work with him. Many times, I ended up staring at him.”

The ‘Haider’ star asserted that his father has a childlike innocence which never makes other realize that he is such a veteran actor. The father-son duo will be seen sharing the screen in Vikas Behl’s upcoming directorial ‘Shaandaar’. ‘Shaandaar’, a romantic-fairytale flick starring Shahid and Alia in lead roles, is Bollywood’s first movie to have destination-wedding as its plot. The movie is scheduled to hit the screens on 22 October this year.

B.C. man who withdrew immigration sponsorship of pregnant wife loses bid to keep son in Canada BY BETHANY LINDSAY, VANCOUVER SUN A B.C. man who withdrew immigration sponsorship from his pregnant wife immediately after they separated has lost his bid to keep their son in Canada when she is deported. The Victoria veterinarian, whose identity and those of his family are protected in court documents, had agreed to sponsor his wife as a permanent resident soon after she moved to Canada from Pakistan in the spring of 2013. But the marriage soon disintegrated amid allegations that the husband had been physically and emotionally abusive, and they separated in March 2014, according to a recent B.C. Supreme Court decision. By that time, the wife was four months pregnant. “Dr. H.S. withdrew his (sponsorship) support almost the same day the couple separated,” Justice George Macintosh wrote, noting that it isn’t clear if that was necessary. “He was duty bound to do so in the case of divorce, and he says in an affidavit that he was advised by a lawyer to do so in the case of separation.” The husband did not inform his wife about the change in her prospects for remaining in Canada, and she received a departure order from immigration officials on April 28, 2014. She tried making a refugee claim to stay in

Canada, alleging that she was in danger from a former fiancé back in Pakistan, but that was rejected. She is set to be deported in the first few weeks of this month. The couple’s son is now 13 months old and has spent most of his short life in the care of his mother, although a court order allows the father up to 20 hours a week in six visits. In anticipation of her deportation, the mother applied to the court for an order allowing her to take the boy with her to Pakistan, and the judge agreed that it would be in the child’s best interests to be with his mother. “Mrs. R.S. is clearly A.'s primary parent and primary caregiver, and always

has been. She still nurses him five or six times a day,” Macintosh wrote. “The geographic location for a 13 month old infant is less important than which parent the infant is with.” The father argued in court that his former spouse should have done more to try staying in Canada, a claim that earned a sharp rebuke from the judge. “Perhaps instead of contacting Canadian Immigration to revoke the sponsorship application, virtually the same day he separated from his pregnant wife, Dr. H.S. should have worked with her and with Canadian Immigration toward keeping her in the country in order to keep his son here. He perhaps regrets now the chain of events his revocation caused,” Macintosh said. He also pointed out that it would be much easier for the father, a Canadian citizen born in Pakistan, to visit his son overseas than it would be for the mother to return to Canada after her deportation. The judge’s decision included an order stated that the father should have “reasonable access” to his son in Pakistan.

The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-by9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Some cells already contain numbers, known as givens. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Every row, every column and every 3-by-3 subgrid should contain digits 1 to 9 only.

Tendulkar pays rich tribute to retiring Zaheer Khan New Delhi, (ANI): Legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has paid rich tributes to retiring Zaheer Khan, describing the left-arm pacer as the one who used to ‘out-think’ batsmen most of the times. "One of the coolest pace bowlers I know. He was a bowler who could 'out think' the batsman most of the times. Always up for a challenge. I am sure he will do well as he begins a new chapter in his life. Wishing @ImZaheer all success in his retired life,” cricketing icon Tendulkar wrote on Twitter. Leading the bandwagon of current cricketers, limited-overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Test skipper Virat Kohli also heaped praise on the 37-year-old pacer for his contribution to the Indian cricket.

“Well done ZAK on a fantastic career.without U it wd hve been very difficult to achieve what the ICT did.most clever fast bowler I know. Life

has just started now,U still can and definitely will contribute a lot to Indian Cricket.wish U all the success,” Dhoni tweeted.

“To a great fast bowler & an even greater person, I wish you luck in all future endeavours @ImZaheer bhai. You have inspired many like me,” Kohli wrote on Twitter. The former Indian spearhead had claimed 311 wickets at an average of 32.94 in 92 Tests and 282 at 29.43 in 200 one-day internationals. He played a crucial role in India’s 2011 World Cup winning campaign, taking 21 wickets to become the tournament's joint leading wicket-taker with Pakistan's Shahid Afridi. Although Zaheer will be available for next year’s edition of the Indian Premier League, he has announced that he would call curtains on his career after the conclusion of the Twenty20 competition. Award returning not publicity stunt: D. Raja New Delhi, (ANI): Reacting on Finance minister Arun Jaitley’s ‘ideologically intolerant’ remark on writers, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja on Thursday said writers are not doing all this for publicity. “Writers are not doing all this for fun or for the sake of some publicity; it is not a manufactured crisis. It is a crisis which India is passing through. Never before, we have witnessed such intolerance in this country. So, it is not a crisis manufactured, the reaction is not a manufactured one, for the sake of opposition or for the sake of undermining Modi’s government, or for the sake of publicity. They are very much hurt and their reflection must be

understood in a proper perspective, Raja told ANI. “In social realm, it is like counter revolution that is sweeping across the country. Everywhere you find communal conflicts, witnessing social conflicts and behind all of this it is a fact

that there are fundamental elements particularly to who have allegiance to RSS and Sangh Parivar, he added. He further added that the government should understand that the deepening crisis is getting worse, and can lead to many difficulties for the country. Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday lashed out at the writers who returned their Sahitya Akademi awards, saying they are the ones who are ideologically intolerant. Dozens of writers have returned their awards in the last few weeks in a protest against the growing intolerance under the Prime Minister Modi led NDA Government. (ANI)

Volkswagen 2016 model emissions tool different from ‘defeat’ software London, (ANI): Volkswagen has confirmed that the disputed ‘auxiliary emissions control device’ operates differently from the ‘defeat’ software included in the company’s 2009 to 2015 models. According to The Guardian, the new software was first revealed to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California regulators on September 29. This prompted the company last week to withdraw applications for approval to sell the 2016 model cars in the United States.

US regulators said that further questions arose after they saw the

company’s disclosure of additional suspect engineering of 2016 diesel models that would potentially help exhaust systems run cleaner during government tests. A criminal investigation is ongoing against Volkswagen for violating the Clean Air Act for its earlier emissions cheat, as well as a raft of state investigations and classaction lawsuits filed on behalf of customers. Volkswagen also faces fines of billions of dollars.

It is said that the Sony bosses were so much impressed by ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ actress that the script, originally written by Anthony and Joe Russoe, of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier fame,' has been slightly re jigged so that she can take on the CIA agent role. Theron next major venture will be in the 'The Huntsman' next year, a spin-off to 2012’s ‘Snow White and The Huntsman.' It is said that the forthcoming thriller is currently in the development, without any release date.

Kylie was jealous of Kendall's modeling career

Just like any other siblings, models Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner also experienced a rivalry while growing up. The latter says her younger sister used to be jealous of her modeling career. "She's a Leo so she loves attention, and at certain points when we were younger, it bothered her that I was getting attention in terms of my modeling," Kendall told Cosmopolitan magazine, reports aceshowbiz.com. "I think that's a natural youngersister thing - to be jealous. I was jealous of her at times too," she added. Nevertheless, now that they are growing up and have their own budding careers in showbiz, they become very supportive of each other. "Now she loves what I do and supports me. She's very into fashion and always texts me when I'm doing a big show like 'That is the sickest thing ever! How were the clothes?' It's as much a part of her as it is mine," Kendall said. Sofia Vergara's engagement ring is ‘perfection’ Actress Sofia Vergara thinks her engagement ring is “perfection’’ and says fiance Joe Manganiello picked it out all by himself. The ‘Modern Family’ actress, who is set to marry ‘Magic Mike XXL’ star Joe Manganiello, 38, in Miami next month after getting engaged last December, had no idea he was going to propose at the time and says he selected the sevencarat oval diamond all by himself, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Asked about the impressive piece of jewellery, the 43-year-old star said: "It is perfection. He picked it for me, and I wouldn't change anything. He knows that I like big."

Vergara is planning to treat their wedding day like a red carpet event and while she was initially very involved int he planning, she's leaving the final details up to her wedding planner. "The only thing I know for sure is it's going to happen, and it's going to be a big wedding because I have a big family. For me it's going to be like a red carpet appearance. I’m just going to show up,’’ she said. By Santa Banta News Network

Selena Gomez reveals she suffers from lupus Singer Selena Gomez has revealed that she is suffering from lupus skin disease, and has already undergone treatment for it. The 23-year-old opened up about battling the autoimmune disease nearly two years after initial reports emerged that she had been diagnosed, reports variety.com. ‘I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy,’ Gomez told Billboard. ‘That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke,’ she added. Gomez cancelled the Asian and Australian leg of her Stars Dance tour in late 2013 and early 2014. Not long after that, Gomez entered treatment at Dawn at The Meadows recovery facility for ‘emotional issues’ and ‘partying’, but not for substance abuse, her representative maintained, which many rumours suggested. During that time, Gomez also underwent chemotherapy, and said she resented the addiction rumours.

‘I wanted so badly to say, 'you guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're a**h***s'. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again,’ she said. She also talked about her body image issues when she was slammed

You've discussed this situation few times now. Talk it over again. Perhaps there are other reasons that the job is objectionable to him. Here's when you should tweet to get maximum retweets Washington D.C, (ANI): A new study has revealed the new algorithm to get you more retweets. Researchers at the University of Maryland have demonstrated that an algorithm that takes into account the past activity of each of your followers and makes predictions about future tweeting can lead to more "retweets" than other commonly used methods, such as posting at peak traffic times. The internet is full of advice about when to tweet to gain maximum exposure, but the new study subjects marketing folk wisdom to scientific scrutiny. Researcher William Rand, along with co-authors, examined the retweeting patterns of 15,000 Twitter followers during two different five week intervals, in 2011 and 2012, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Retweets are especially valuable to marketers because they help

to spread a brand's message beyond core followers. Most marketers are well aware there's a pattern to Twitter traffic. In the early morning, nothing much happens. Then people get into work and retweet intensely, as they do their morning surfing. The number of retweets drops as the day progresses, with a slight uptick at 5 p.m.

Then it picks up again later "when people get back to their computers after dinner, or are out at a bar or restaurant using their phones," as Rand puts it. Monday through Friday follow roughly that pattern, but Saturday and Sunday show markedly different behavior, with much smaller morning spikes and fewer declines during the day. A "seasonal" model of posting -- the

Talking about the delicious treat, the 49-year-old actor tweeted, “Sania Mirza your returns are impeccable but the Biryani you ‘serve’ is untouchable. Your smile won over the whole Dilwale

set. Thanks.” The ‘Chennai Express’ star was accompanied by Varun Dhawan, Kajol, Varun Sharma and Farah Khan for the Dilwale Ki Dawaat. Meanwhile Farah tweeted, “@iamsrk We like guests who bring their own food! "Dilwale ki Daawat "was such fun last nite @MirzaSania @Varun_dvn” (ANI)

folk-wisdom model -- would suggest posting whenever there are peaks in that recurring weekly pattern. (Which peaks you choose would depend how many tweets you expect to send.) The algorithm that the authors wrote, which took each individual's behavior into account, was the most successful at generating retweets. The paper serves as a demonstration that applying analytic methods to Twitter data can improve a brand's ability to spread its message. The study appears in Proceedings of Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining. (ANI)

No more nudes! Playboy to stop publishing naked photos from next year London, Oct. 14 (ANI): Playboy magazine will stop publishing images of fully nude women from March 2016. In an interview with a newspaper, CEO Scott Flanders said that Playboy founder Hugh Hefner had agreed with a proposal to stop publishing images of naked women from March 2016, The Guardian reports. The magazine would still feature a Playmate of the Month and provocative pictures of women, but they would be rated PG-13. Cory Jones, chief content officer of Playboy, said that the magazine would be more accessible and more intimate. The website has already been given a makeover and made safe to read at work, which will attract younger readers and increase the web traffic.

Review: 'Jazbaa' - Stylishly thrilling Movie Review:

Cast: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Irrfan Khan, Shabana Azmi, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Atul Kulkarni, Jackie Shroff and Sara Arjun Director: Sanjay Gupta Rating: *** Anuradha Varma (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) is a successful criminal lawyer whose life turns topsy-turvy when her young daughter Sanaya (Sara Arjun) is kidnapped suddenly. As ransom, she is compelled to handle the case of a murderer and rapist Niyaaz (Chandan Roy Sanyal) and has to ensure he walks out free. Loaded with grey characters, "Jazbaa" is the transformation of a confident criminal lawyer into a helpless and frustrated mother, trying to rescue her daughter from her kidnappers. Aishwarya, seen on screen after a long hiatus, has a pivotal role, which she fits to perfection. Confident, erudite as a lawyer, she portrays the anguish of a

single mother searching for her daughter with equal ease and aplomb. Irrfan as Inspector Yohan, who is Anuradha's childhood friend, delivers one of his best performances. His character is multi-faceted: quirky, emotional, caring, efficient and corrupt. Cumulatively, these make his character interesting and endearing.

Convicted for the rape and murder of Siya, daughter of professor Garima Chowdhary (Shabana Azmi), Chandan Roy Sanyal as Niyaaz manages to look the part of a dodgy and brazen criminal, but tends to overdo his character in certain scenes. Veteran actor Shabana Azmi with her commanding presence on screen, essays her character of an anguished mother, who has lost her daughter, brilliantly. Her balanced portrayal, juxtaposed with emotional but controlled outbursts, is a treat to watch. Jackie Shroff as Mahesh Maklai, an ambitious and ruthless politician, is competent, but adds nothing new to this oft-seen character. Siddhanth Kapoor as Sam Maklai, son of Mahesh Maklai, fails to impress even though he tries to bring histrionics to the screen in the bit role he has. Atul Kulkarni, as the public prosecutor, merely mouths dialogues and

delivers those well, as expected of an actor of his calibre. But it's just another lawyer in a Hindi film. There is no nuance to his flat character. The taut and well written screenplay, although inspired by a Korean film, "Sebeun Deijeu", meaning "Seven Days", is cleverly layered, giving the film an intrigue factor throughout. Never once is there a dull moment and the film keeps you riveted to the screen. "Mohabbat hai, isliye to jaane diya. Zidd hoti, to meri bahon mein hoti" and "Race or case dono peecha nahin chodte." Many such dialogues in the film are dramatically poetic, sharp and hardhitting. Others with their sardonic tinge, elicit a chuckle or two in some scenes. The music is subtly and cleverly used and there are no unwarranted song sequences to break the uninterrupted viewing experience. "Jane tere sheher ka kya irada hai", sung by Vipin Aneja, is soulful and touches your heart. Cinematographer Sameer Arya's camera work is flawless and he adroitly captures the mood of the scene in a stylised manner. Bunty Nagi's editing is praiseworthy as he has seamlessly layered the film. "Jazbaa" is a well made, stylish action-drama, with good performances, strong screenplay and distinctive cinematography. However, the pictureperfect designing of the film is overegged, giving the film a glossy, albeit, synthetic and unreal look. With ample thrill and entertainment, this one is a good weekend watch. Best apps for frequent travellers (NC) Sometimes life takes you away

Workplace Integration

from the people you love. Whether you're travelling for work, studying abroad or

for Mature Immigrants

globe-trotting, keeping in touch with friends and family has never been easier thanks to modern technology. The travel experts at Comfort Inn hotels have picked their top free apps to help you keep in touch while travelling: Rebtel: Gone are the days of calling cards. Rebtel converts international calls to local calls to get you the most affordable rates available. The app and first call are free but you'll need to purchase credit for all other calls. WhatsApp: This popular app uses the internet to help you talk, text, send photos and videos, as well as leave audio and video messages. Plus the group feature lets you stay in touch with multiple people at once. Skype or Viber: These two apps have similar features including video calling and instant messaging, as well as affordable long distance calling options. While Viber is easier to use and consumes less data, Skype is more popular, making it easier to reach out to other users. Snapchat: Text, video chat and send photos and videos to other users

without taking up any of your phone's memory. Snaps sent will disappear in 10 seconds, but the “story feature allows you to share a series of snaps with all your friends for 24 hours. Swarm: When Foursquare decided to focus on location-based dining and entertainment recommendations and reviews, it moved its “Check-In and “Mayorship features over to a new app called Swarm. Swarm is a fun way to share your location with friends and family on Facebook and Twitter to let them know what you are enjoying on your trip.

Facebook: With nearly 1.5 billion users, Facebook remains the most reliable way to stay in touch with loved ones near and far. The Facebook Messenger app also has phone and video calling capabilities. Most importantly, Facebook's new location-activated “Safety Check prompts you to “check-in to let friends know you are okay during natural disasters and other crises. Whether

you're

for

something instant, new, or just a fun way to connect, there is an app for every traveller looking to stay in touch. Your friends and family will thank you.

“Winter is harsh on automobiles with deepfreeze temperatures, slippery conditions, plus stop-and-go gear changing,â€? says Colin Dilley at Prestone, a leading name in engine protection products. Here, Dilley gives us a few quick and easy winter maintenance tips: • Top up windshield fluids with a winter specific formula and replace blades if brittle. • Check tire pressure regularly and top up the air as recommended. • Check the treads on your tires and for the best vehicle control, replace them no later than 5/32" of remaining tread depth.

Finally, our Walk-In Tub with a Heated Seat!

• Top up the antifreeze/coolant with a formula guaranteed to protect against corrosion. Corrosion can cause engines to quickly overheat, even in the winter. Easy changes for healthier living (NC) Should we be eating butter? How much coffee is too much? At what time of day should we eat our last meal? It seems like new health findings and solutions emerge every day. But in fact, mom's traditional, no nonsense advice to cook healthy, fulsome meals from scratch was right all along. Rose Reisman, author of The Best of Rose Reisman, knows that small modifications can make a big difference to your health. “Little changes add up, whether it's making smarter choices in an effort to lose weight or if you're simply trying to improve your overall health and wellbeing,” she explains. “Parking further away from the entrance of your office, swapping water for soda, or committing to making meals at home using pantry favourites, all have long term benefits.” To increase the health factor in your diet, try:

for those mid-morning snacks. • Replacing your regular cooking oil with Mazola corn oil. Corn oil contains naturally-occurring plant sterols, which can benefit heart health. • Dressing up your salads with foods containing plant sterols. These include avocado, almonds and chickpeas. Getting the daily recommended 1,500 mg to 3,000 mg of plant sterols in your diet can be achieved through simple updates to your current meals. Experimenting with new ingredients and flavour combinations has never been so fun – and good for you. More delicious recipes by Rose Reisman are available at visit www.makegood.ca.

Lighten things up this holiday

NC) 'Tis the season for indulgence, so perhaps it's time to lighten things up with a fresh, festive salad featuring arugula, tomato and quinoa. Quinoa, most commonly available in red, white or black, is naturally gluten-free and packs a nutritious punch. It contains iron, B-vitamins, magnesium, potassium, protein and calcium among other essential vitamins and minerals. Give a fresh twist to your dressing by using a lighter oil, like corn oil, that doesn't overpower other flavours. Corn oil contains four times more plant sterols than olive oil and two times more than Canola oil. Plant sterols can play a role in reducing the risk of heart disease and are naturally present in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and corn oil.
