Prime Minister delivers formal Komagata Maru apology in House of Commons Ottawa-The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today delivered a formal statement of apology in the House of Commons for the Komagata Maru incident. On May 23, 1914, a steamship arrived in Vancouver carrying 376 passengers who had hopes for a new life in Canada. After a long journey from India, the majority of the passengers – who were of Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu origin – were denied entry into Canada due to the laws in existence at the time. Today, the Prime Minister delivered a formal apology in front of descendants of those directly affected by the incident. He emphasized that Canada’s rich diversity is a source of strength for our country and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the values – including multiculturalism – enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada said,“Today – while

knowing that no words can fully erase the pain and suffering experienced by the passengers – I offer a sincere apology on behalf of the government for the laws in force at the time that allowed Canada to be indifferent to the plight of the passengers of the Komagata Maru. Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada said, “The Komagata Maru incident is a stain on Canada’s past. But the history of our country is one in

which we constantly challenge ourselves, and each other, to extend our personal definitions of who is a Canadian. We have learned, and will continue to learn, from the mistakes of our past. We must make sure to never repeat them. Premier Christy Clark attends federal Komagata Maru apology British Columbia Premier Christy Clark issued the following statement as she attended today's apology concerning

the racist policies that denied the Komagata Maru entry into Canada on May 23, 1914: "The Komagata Maru is an important part of both Canada's and British Columbia’s history that we must never forget. In our great province and country, it is vital to remain steadfast in our goal to create an inclusive environment for all cultures that celebrates diversity and refuses to tolerate racism and hatred.

No charges against Pamela Wallin in Senate expense scandal Justin Trudeau OTTAWA – The RCMP closed another chapter in the long-running Senate expense saga Thursday by declaring they will not charge Sen. Pamela Wallin after an extensive criminal review of her travel claims. The force made the long-awaited announcement in a terse statement, nearly three years after they first started looking at the Saskatchewan senator and nearly a month after the sensational dismissal of 31 criminal charges against Sen. Mike Duffy. “The RCMP has completed its thorough investigation into Sen. Pamela Wallin’s Senate expenses,” said the statement from assistant commissioner Gilles Michaud. “Following consultation with Crown counsel, the RCMP has determined that no criminal charges will be laid against Sen. Wallin and will be concluding its investigational file.” The Mounties have had a file open on the Saskatchewan senator since 2013

after a critical audit of her spending ended with her repaying some $150,000 — including interest — for claims the Senate said were unjustified. Wallin, along with Duffy and Patrick Brazeau, was suspended without pay from the Senate in November 2013 over disallowed expenses. She long maintained her innocence and argued she was being singled out for being an activist senator who rubbed some of her colleagues the wrong way. Former prime minister Stephen

Harper appointed Wallin to the Senate in 2009, but Wallin left the Conservative caucus at the height of the expense scandal in 2013. Court documents filed as recently as January of last year spelled out Wallin’s travel patterns in detail as investigators went in search of information from the various corporate boards on which Wallin used to sit. Among the claims were 24 events Wallin attended in her capacity as a member of the boards of Porter Airlines and Gluskin Sheff. Wallin’s lawyer, Terrence O’Sullivan, said expense claims for those meetings were inadvertently submitted to the Senate, instead of to the companies, due an “administrative oversight.” Wallin explained all that to external auditors hired by the Senate to review her expenses and they concluded there had been no fraud, O’Sullivan said at the time. -BY THE CANADIAN PRESS

Man in court for allegedly sexually assaulting senior By Kevin Diakiw Surrey North Delta Leader A man charged with sexually assaulting a 70-year-old South Surrey woman last year appeared briefly in Surrey Provincial Court today (Thursday, May 19). On Aug. 12, 2015, a man broke into the home of a senior in the Grandview area of South Surrey. He produced a weapon and asked for cash and other items, police say. When the woman was unable to produce money, the intruder physically and sexually assaulted her, police allege. The man charged with the offence – Steven Thomas Morse – appeared in Surrey Provincial Court on Thursday morning to set a date for his next appearance.

The large-framed man with short, brown, wavy hair and a goatee rocked from side to side as he stood in the prisoner's box and listened to the brief proceedings. None of the details of the

appearance can be reported as they are subject to a publication ban. Morse, a Langley resident, has been in custody since Sept. 4 and is scheduled to appear again in Surrey Provincial Court on Thursday, June 9 at 9:30 a.m

apologizes again

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has apologized again for his physical encounter with opposition MPs on the floor of the House of Commons. Trudeau rose in the House to apologize to all MPs, the Speaker and also NDP MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau, with whom he collided while trying to hurry the Conservative whip to his seat. “I apologize for crossing the floor in an attempt to have [Gordon Brown] take his seat. That intervention was not appropriate. It was not my role. It should not have happened. In particular, I should not have made physical contact with the member. And I apologize to the member and to all parliamentarians for my inappropriate contact.” Trudeau says it wasn’t his role to try to expedite the vote that was scheduled to take place. “In my haste, I did not pay attention to my surroundings. As a result, I made physical contact with the member for Berthier – Maskinongé, something I regret profoundly, for which I apologize unreservedly and which should absolutely not have happened.” “I made a mistake. I regret it. I’m looking to make amends,” the prime minister added. An all-party committee will investigate accusations that he “manhandled” the Conservative whip yesterday and elbowed Brosseau in the House of Commons. -BY THE CANADIAN PRESS

Fort McMurray wildfire moves across border into Saskatchewan EDMONTON – Officials say the threat of the Fort McMurray wildfire has diminished as the flames move into Saskatchewan. Alberta senior wildlife manager Chad Morrison says fire crews have been successful holding the fire back from oilsands facilities and work camps. The massive fire, which has grown to 5,000 square kilometres, has crossed the Saskatchewan boundary into other forested areas. Morrison says the blaze has burned the same amount of forest as all fires consumed in Alberta last year. He says a trace amount of rain fell in the region this morning and more moisture, along with cooler temperatures, are forecast in the coming days.

Fine for passing school bus more than doubles British Columbia is more than doubling the penalty for drivers who fail to stop for school buses that have their lights flashing – increasing fines from $167 to $368. “We [are] responding to a wide array of voices from local governments, school-board trustees, parents, bus drivers and others who were quite concerned about the increasing prevalence of motorists ignoring the flashing lights on school buses,” Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Monday at a news conference. Drivers in the province will continue to be subject to a three-demeritpoint penalty, as well. A second offence will also lead to a $300 increase in insurance premiums. After a third

offence, the increase to insurance premiums amounts to $640, plus the fine. While there have been no fatalities in the past five years, the Insurance Corp. of B.C. says 14 children were injured between 2009 and 2014 as a result of drivers ignoring a school bus’s flashing lights. Police have issued 1,100 tickets to drivers during the same time period. Cindy Dettling, a bus driver from Fort St. John who has been pushing for an increase in fees, said some bus stops are particularly bad for drivers who ignore flashing lights. Bus

drivers across the province have recorded more than half a dozen infractions at certain stops and posted the videos to social media, she said. “There’s more than one infraction of this law every single day in our district,” Ms. Dettling said. “Every school district in the province is experiencing the same

problem.” Before this week, British Columbia had the second-lowest fees in the country, only surpassed by Newfoundland and Labrador, whose own fees will increase substantially in two months. That will leave New Brunswick at the bottom, with tickets as low as $240. British Columbia’s fines remain lower than in some provinces. In Alberta, passing a school bus with its lights on earns a ticket of $402. Fees are higher still in Ontario, where penalties can range from $400 to $1,000 on a first offence and up to $4,000 for subsequent offences. In Ontario and Alberta, each offence is worth six demerit points against the driver’s licence. B.C. drivers face three points for a ticket. - The Globe and Mail

Murder trial begins in 2014 death of Jagtar Gill The murder trial of an Ottawa man and a co-worker accused in the 2014 death of Barrhaven mother Jagtar Gill is expected to begin Wednesday. Bhupinderpal Gill — Jagtar Gill's husband—and Gurpreet Ronald both face first-degree murder charges. On Jan. 29, 2014, Jagtar Gill had stayed home recovering from a hernia operation while her husband and oldest daughter went out to shop for an anniversary present to celebrate their 17 years of marriage. When father and daughter returned to the Barrhaven home on 174 Brambling Way, the teenager was first to find her mother, according to police. Investigators say Jagtar Gill had

been beaten, her throat and wrists slashed. Several months later, in April 2014, police arrested Bhupinderpal Gill and Ronald, a neighbour and co-worker at OC Transpo. The two have remained in custody since their arrest. Superior Court Justice Julianne Parfett told potential jurors Tuesday to expect seven weeks of testimony from some 41 witnesses in the trial. As jury selection entered its second day Tuesday, the co-accused sat a bench apart in the witness boxes, both already looking haggard, rarely casting eyes on the other. On Wednesday the 12 jurors are expected to begin hearing testimony. -By Amanda Pfeffer, CBC News

One dead in firing on Sant Dhadrianwala near Ludhiana, some more injured One person died Tuesday after some unidentified persons opened fire on the cavalcade of prominent Sikh preacher Ranjit Singh Khalsa Dhadrianwale of Patiala’s Parmeshar Dwar Gurmat Parchar Mission. The incident happened around 8.15 pm on Ludhiana’s Barewal road when the attackers, believed to be 3040 in number, stopped his cavalcade to serve ‘chabeel’ (drinking water). The miscreants had set up a tent on the road to serve ‘chabeel’ to the people, which the police claimed was part of a planned conspiracy. Dhadrianwale was on his way to village Issewal to attend a religious programme. The preacher, who was travelling in a Land Cruiser, had asked his driver to stop the vehicle when the accused attacked his cavalcade. Another Sikh preacher, Bhupinder Singh Dhakki Sahib Wale, was grievously injured in the attack. He later succumbed to injuries at the city’s Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Almost 20 rounds were fired during the attack. The police said that Dhadrianwale’s driver continued driving despite the vehicle’s tyres being punctured by the attackers. “He very courageously kept driving the vehicle even after one tyre came off, which has now been recovered from the spot. The accused followed them in a Bolero and continued to fire till

Dhadrianwale reached the safe hideout and informed us,” Ludhiana Police Commissioner JS Aulakh told The Indian Express. “The accused had put up a tent on the road and were aware of saint’s movement beforehand. They stopped cavalcade to serve them water and it is a deep-rooted conspiracy. We have started the investigation and all CCTV cameras in vicinity are being scanned. Doctors have confirmed the death of Bhupinder Singh, one of the preachers who was accompanying him,” added Aulakh. “I was the target, not Bhupinder,” Dhadrianwale, who was recording his statement at PAU police station till the filing of this report, told police. Aulakh confirmed that Dhadrianwale was safe and would be kept under their security till the danger was averted. “We are

recording his statement. He has claimed that close to 30-40 miscreants opened fire on them and 15-20 rounds were fired. Dhadrianwale has also claimed that he was the prime target of this attack and not Bhupinder Singh, who has been killed. FIR for murder, attempt to murder and under sections of the Arms Act is being registered at the PAU police station,” said Aulakh. He added that ‘till now nothing has come out which hints towards role of militants’. “Most probably it is case of personal rivalry, but we are probing all angles,” he said. Last year, Dhadrianwale had led a protest by Sikh preachers against the incidents of alleged desecration of Guru Granth Sahib. He had, however, stayed away from the radicals-backed Sarbat Khalsa. -The Indian Express

Two men accused of immigration fraud The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that two men, acting as immigration consultants, were summoned to appear in court. Rajinder Singh and Resham Singh are facing three (3) charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and two (2) charges under the Criminal Code. Rajinder Singh was arrested and appeared this morning at the Montréal court house, and Resham Singh received a summons to appear on June 9, 2016, at the Montréal court house. Rajinder Singh and Resham Singh are accused of counselling persons to misrepresent information in their immigration applications and refugee protection claims, as well as forging and using counterfeit documents. They are also accused of having acted as immigration representatives in return for compensation, when in fact they were not authorized. “The CBSA conducts investigations and prosecutes immigration offenders with the full force of the law. Immigration frauds are criminal acts. Do not be a victim of fraud. Dishonest consultants can take advantage of people who want to come to Canada, and they represent a serious threat to the integrity of Canada’s immigration system. This is why the CBSA acts to prosecute those responsible in the courts.”

Mother of two dies in Florida after increasingly popular ‘Brazilian butt lift’ cosmetic surgery goes awry BY BEN GUARINO, WASHINGTON POST When Heather Meadows travelled from her home state of West Virginia to Florida, she expected to return from the Sunshine State looking a little bit different. Well-rested, perhaps, though relaxation was not the reason for her visit. She was on a cosmetic pilgrimage for a surgical procedure that would use her own fat to plump up her buttocks — the increasingly popular “Brazilian butt lift.” But the mother of two never returned. On May 12, Meadows checked into Encore Plastic Surgery, a medical clinic in the city of Hialeah, in northern Miami-Dade county. Something went wrong at the clinic, and she was hurried to an emergency room. There, her organs failed, said the Miami-Dade medical examiner’s office, according to The Associated Press, after clots of fat blocked her arteries. Findings point toward an accidental death during a medical procedure. The 29-year-old woman died. “Findings point toward an accidental death during a medical procedure,” Hialeah police spokesman Carl Zogby told the Miami Herald. Butt augmentations like the one

Meadows had planned to receive are on the rise, according to data collected by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the largest organization of plastic surgeons in the United States. In 2015, there were 14,705 butt augmentations using fat grafts, up 28 per cent from 2014. Although cosmetic breast surgery is by far the most popular procedure — at more than 250,000 operations in 2015, the group reports — butt lifts are the fastest growing, at a rate higher than breast implants, tummy tucks or liposuction. You have to be a ‘bootyologist,’ a sculptor. Though the fat-graft butt lift is currently surging in popularity, the surgery itself is about two decades old. (How the procedure became known as the Brazilian butt lift is unclear;

Leonard Grossman, a New York Citybased cosmetic surgeon, claims that he was televised performing a butt lift on a Brazilian patient in 1996, and the name stuck.) By the early 2000s, Anthony Griffin, the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who starred on ABC’s Extreme Makeover, popularized the Brazilian butt lift, suggesting it would make a good 2005 New Year’s gift. To hear some plastic surgeons tell it, the current so-called booty boom can be traced to the rise of celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj. During a lift, a surgeon hoovers up fat deposits from the abdomen or thigh, via liposuction or a syringe, then washes the tissue and finally deposits it in the buttock. “You have to be a ‘bootyologist,’ a sculptor,” Griffin told the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2004. “You just can’t put fat back there.” The goal, as Griffin puts it on his website , is a butt described as “round, curvaceous, thong-worthy.” Doctors consider butt augmentation procedures, by and large, to be safe. In an early study of more than 500 patients, the major reported complications were cellulitis and bruising in less than one in 40 procedures. (Cosmetic surgeries, like all surgeries, carry some degree of risk for pain, bleeding or other complications.)

Man charged with manslaughter in Surrey after family member dies in hospital SURREY — A man accused of assaulting a family member is now charged with manslaughter after the 32-year-old victim died in hospital. The accused is Mandeep Bhatti, 29, said Staff Sergeant Jennifer Pound, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. She did not reveal the name of the victim, or his precise relationship to the accused. "We are not releasing the identity of the victim or the relationship between the two," she told the Now. The Surrey RCMP had responded

to a complaint of an assault May 2nd in a residence in the 6700-block of 152nd Street in Newton following an argument between two "family members" there, she said. The victim was taken to hospital suffering from a skull fracture requiring emergency surgery, was treated, and released seven days later, on May 9th. Three days later, Pound said, the victim "was readmitted to the hospital with a life-threatening brain bleed." He died in hospital on May 15.

The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-by9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Some cells already contain numbers, known as givens. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Every row, every column and every 3-by-3 subgrid should contain digits 1 to 9 only.

Work factors that predict sleep problems revealed

Washington D.C, (ANI): A recent research has revealed the specific psychological and social work factors that are associated with sleep problems. Results show that quantitative job demands, decision control, role conflict and support from a superior in the workplace were the most consistent predictors of troubled sleep, which was characterized by difficulty initiating sleep or disturbed sleep. Findings remained significant after adjustment for potential con-founders such as age, sex and occupation skill level. Lead author Jolien Vleeshouwers from the National Institute of Occupational Health in Oslo, Norway said, “Apart from raising a general awareness of the significance of these factors for health and well-being, the results should be directly applicable in practical efforts to target sleep problems among employees.”

Does age of smartphone also mean loss of privacy? Washington D.C, (ANI): A new study has highlighted as to how smartphone technology is leading to diminished privacy. The Tel Aviv University study argues that "dynamic visibility," in which technological surveillance is combined with personal information volunteered by individuals online, has led to diminished overall privacy. "Technology is not only used topdown but also bottom-up, with individuals using their own technological devices to share and enhance their visibility in space," said co-author Dr. Tali Hatuka, adding “Whenever we use 'location-aware' devices, or tap on Waze or dating apps, like Tinder, or check-in on Facebook, we are really diminishing our own privacy.” "This combination of secret surveillance and voluntary sharing contributes to a sense of 'being exposed' in a public space that normalizes practices of sharing personal data by individuals," Dr. Hatuka continued. "The result is diminished overall privacy." A survey conducted in 2013 by Google and Ipsos MediaCT in dozens of countries found that the Israeli population had the world's highest smartphone saturation and some of the highest rates of mobile internet usage and mobile email usage. The new study found some differences among sharing preferences in different types of spaces, but these paled in comparison to the

overwhelming willingness of participants to share their locations with their social networks. The researchers developed an Android application called Smart-Spaces to collect information for the study. The app combines smartphone-based surveys with the online tracking of locations and phone application usage. The SmartSpaces application was installed for 20 days on the phones of TAU students, who answered context-based surveys in the course of their daily routines. Each participant was interviewed before and after the installation of Smart-Spaces. "More than 73 percent of the participants shared their locations as they answered the surveys," said Dr. Hatuka. "Moreover, there was a correlation

between the kind of space they were in, private home, library, street, square etc. and their willingness to provide information, with a higher willingness to share location and other information when the subject was in public spaces." The results were analysed according to different activities, locations and number of people present at the time. "While the sample is not representative of the general population, our results can be considered predictors for future phenomena," Dr. Hatuka observed. "Students are early adopters of smartphone technology, and their practices may predict those of the more general population." The study is published in Urban Studies. (ANI)

Washington D.C, Apr 19 (ANI): Also known as the love drug, ecstasy has been one of the most popular party drugs since the 1980s. For people, who are interested in knowing what happens in the brain when someone drops a bean, a new study is here to help us understand the chemicals at work. Researchers Dr Carl Roberts and Dr Andrew Jones from the University of Liverpool, along with Dr Cathy Montgomery from Liverpool John Moores University, conducted an analysis of seven independent studies

that used molecular imaging to examine the neuropsychological effect

of ecstasy on people that use the drug regularly.

The nerve pathway that is predominantly affected by ecstasy is called the serotonin pathway. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is synthesized, stored, and released by specific neurons in this pathway. It is involved in the regulation of several processes within the brain, including mood, emotions, aggression, sleep, appetite, anxiety, memory, and perceptions. They found that ecstasy users showed significant reductions in the way serotonin is transported in the brain. This can have a particular impact on regulating appropriate emotional reactions to situations. Roberts said that the team conducted the analysis on seven papers that fitted our inclusion criteria which provided us with data from 157 ecstasy users and 148 controls. 11 out of the 14 brain regions included in analysis showed serotonin transporter (SERT) reductions in ecstasy users compared to those who took other drugs.

Here's why Arjun is not threatened by competition in Bollywood

Arjun Kapoor says he is not competing with his contemporaries; lucky to have the luxury to pick and choose work. Arjun Kapoor does not feel threatened by competition in the industry as he says unlike others, he is fortunate to have the option to pick and choose his films and directors. The 30-year-old actor, who is into his fourth year in Bollywood, says rather than being bothered by others bagging better roles and films than him, he prefers to concentrate on his own career. "I am among the fortunate few who can be selective about their work and choose who they want to work with and what they want to do. I still have that option in hand which a lot of actors don't. So, why will I feel pressure seeing others' work? I concentrate on my work," says Arjun. The actor says he wants to sustain long enough to be able to play the main lead in films till the age of 46. "It is survival of the fittest not quickest. You can rise but you have to sustain. I have been rising very, very slow and I prefer it like that," he says. -By Santa Banta Network

Aamir Khan gets closer to his target! Aamir Khan is just a few kilos away from his 25-kg weight loss target before he begins shooting for the next schedule of his wrestling drama in June He took six months to go from 68 kgs to 93 kgs for his role in Nitesh Tiwari's 'Dangal' and now he has been sweating it out to knock off all the excess flab. In January this year, Aamir Khan's target was to lose 25 kgs in 25 weeks with his weight loss programme being monitored in Arizona, US. On his birthday on March 14, the star took everyone by surprise in his visibly leaner avatar - he had shed close to 13 kgs in two-and-a-half months. And at the moment, he is just three kgs away from his target and has a month in hand before the next schedule of Dangal gets underway. Aamir plays the role of wrestling coach Mahavir Phogat, who trained three Commonwealth Games gold medalists. He has already shot for

portions where he will be seen as a 55year-old and is now prepping to play the younger version. A source close to the actor says, "Aamir has lost 22 kgs already and has a little over a month to put off the three

extra kilos. The next schedule of Dangal will kick off on June 15 in Punjab. He will shoot for portions where is required to portray a young Mahavir Phogat. Currently, Aamir is in the US and will be back next week."

Sharmila Tagore: Real man shares wife's household work load Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore feels a real man is one who shares household work load with his wife, and says such a move would promote participative relationship, bringing in happiness and peace at home. "It's in everybody's mind that this load sharing and this household chores need to be shared, do the laundry at home and help in household chores," Tagore told reporters at a promotional event here today. "Now we are all working women. Things are now changing and now we are ready and we want men to come forward and share the load. It's not going to make you less of a man. I have seen Saif (Ali Khan, her son)...when he became father (how he shared the load)," the National

Award-winning actress said. "To be a real man, I think you have to be supportive of each other and to be a real woman you have to be supportive of your man, and the man has to do the same thing, only then he would be a real man," Sharmila said. Sharmila's daughter and actress Soha Ali Khan said men can certainly do household chores. "If I can do it, men can certainly do it. It's interesting now to talk about equality in the home and

Roots

involving men in household chores such that women don't have to over extend themselves doing both her job and coming home and doing all the household chores," Soha said. "So, that kind of sharing the load is something that I have seen in my family growing up. Amma (Sharmila) was a working wife and a mother. I have seen my father (late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi) being very supportive of that and laundry was always my father's department," she added. -By Santa Banta Network

remarry. She says if I remarry she will not allow me in my house. My parents have told her once I marry she will still live with us as before and that they want me to remarry so that me and my kids will have some security. But my motherin-law refuses to budge. I don’t know what to do. Helpless in Surrey Dear Helpless in Surrey: Decision to marry or not is solely your decision. If you are O.K. with it and if your children do not have an issue with it then you don’t need to worry. Your mother-in-law should be happy to have a daughter-in-law who cares enough to look after her even after her son is no longer alive. If she had any sense at all she would have given you the same status as a daughter and would do whatever she can to secure your future. You need to ask her if it was you instead of your husband would she refuse to allow him to remarry?

If no then what’s the problem. If she still wants to be stubborn then tell her it’s your house she’s living in. If she has an issue with it, she can move out. If she should change her mind then treat her like you would your own mother giving her full respect. Life is too short, you know this better than anyone else. Go ahead marry if you want to. But before that spend some time getting to know that person. Let him interact with your children. And let the children get to know him. If he’s agreeable and if your kids don’t have a problem with it then go live your life. Good Luck.

(NC) A strong education plays a crucial role in fostering ambition and providing the opportunity for success. Not only does it nurture the ability to develop self-confidence and realize one's potential, but for both communities and nations, educated citizens provide a basis for sustainable societal and economic

progress. The sad truth is that not everyone around the world has access to widespread education. For girls in Rwanda and Uganda, the idea of completing secondary school is inconceivable. This is true for 70 percent of Rwandan girls, and 81 per cent of

Ugandan girls, whose lack of education perpetuates the cycle of poverty in these countries, not to mention the spread of HIV, early pregnancy, child mortality, overpopulation, malnutrition, corruption and the other obstacles that keep a population powerless and repressed. To these young women, the idea attending university and having a career is not even close to the realm of reality. Meet Marie Jeanne and Martha. Marie Jeanne and her six siblings were raised by their single mother. Martha comes from a family of five. It was only through financial assistance that Marie Jeanne completed secondary school. After graduating, she was destined to join her brothers and sisters, who work in farming. She would likely have married young so she could be supported by a husband, gotten pregnant early, given birth to many children, and struggled to support them. Martha's father was unemployed throughout most of her childhood.

Martha's parents couldn't afford to pay her school fees, so she frequently missed primary school. But thanks to a Canadian organization, Martha is proudly pursuing a Diploma in Business Administration, and Marie Jeanne is now studying Civil Engineering in Kigali. Martha and Marie Jeanne are changing lives because of an organization called Beautiful World Canada, which provides scholarship packages for secondary, post-secondary and vocational students in Sierra Leone, Uganda, Rwanda and South Africa. Beautiful World's local partners, which are registered charities in their own countries, provide support and encouragement to the students in their program, and monitor their success. “When I complete my studies, I plan to use the skills I've learned in my program to build a proper home for my mother and siblings, who struggle to find ongoing, stable employment,” says Marie Jeanne.

5 ways to help your community (NC) We all have a vested interest in making our community a vibrant, thriving, and happy place to live. There are many ways to make a positive impact like shopping locally, volunteering to clean up trash and planting a local garden but there several other aspects behind the scenes that many of us don't think about. It's no overstatement to say that stone, sand and gravel are the foundations of our cities. They make up the key components for building our roads, transit networks and buildings. But the extraction of these materials from the land can also have significant impacts on the environment and communities where they originate. That's why the Cornerstone

Standards Council (CSC) has developed its Responsible Aggregate Certification System, the world's first voluntary certification system. CSC's system takes a long-term approach and encourages operators to go above and beyond legal

Tips on how to stress-test your mortgage

(NC) With interest rates at an alltime low, locking into a mortgage is a tempting commitment. However, these low rates have experts cautioning homeowners: can you still afford your mortgage if rates were to rise? Stress-testing your mortgage is a smart way for home buyers to prepare for the future in the event that rates go up. Before locking in to a mortgage, home owners would calculate their payments at a higher rate to see how much their mortgage may cost in the event rates were to rise in the future. “When homeowners stress test their mortgage at different rates, they have a better understanding of what they can and can't afford, says Wade Stayzer, vice president of sales and service at Meridian, Ontario's largest credit union. “It's a simple and quick test that can save homeowners from future stress and worry. Meridian offers the following tips to help homeowners: Test at 1 to 2 per cent higher than

your current rate: Financial advisors recommend stress testing your mortgage at 1 to 2 per cent higher than your current rate. Many financial institutions offer online mortgage calculators that are designed to help calculate your mortgage at different rates. Not just for first-time homeowners: Stress-testing your mortgage isn't just limited to first-time homebuyers. Current homeowners who are looking to renew can benefit from this exercise too. “While you can't predict the future, you can at least prepare for it, says Stayzer. “This is a better-safe-thansorry approach to ensure you can comfortably afford your home now and 10 years from now. Double check your results with a mortgage specialist: Mortgage specialists are well versed in the financial implications associated with home ownership and can help you both stress-test your mortgage and also help find ways to pay it down faster.

requirements and extract stone, sand and gravel in the most responsible ways possible. Here are five ways that CSC certification helps communities: 1. Involving community experts Pits and quarries that value the input of their neighbours, community groups and local government have significantly improved reputations within their community. By engaging in early and transparent discussions with concerned individuals, pit and quarry operators are sometimes able to take actions that address potential issues before they arise. CSC's certification system requires certified operations to engage with the community early and in an open and transparent way. 2. Forming public engagement committees One way that CSC certified

operations ensure that transparent engagement continues on the site is by exploring the community's interest to form a public engagement committee. If the community expresses interest, a certified operation will form a committee to share information, solicit feedback and have open discussions about the site. 3. Protecting the environment Determining where pits and quarries belong can be a difficult process involving careful assessment of the area's geology, hydrogeology and land-uses. CSC's Responsible Aggregate Standard requires new operations to undertake site planning in a way that protects, and where possible enhances, sensitive ecosystems and threatened wildlife. 4. Third-party verification Whether or not a pit or quarry meets CSC's voluntary certification requirements is determined once auditors have conducted a thorough assessment of the site and its practices. CSC's certification system verifies that there is sufficient evidence to support claims that the operation meets and exceeds regulatory requirements. 5. Local procurement and hiring Pits and quarries offer significant potential for financial benefits to be brought to a community. CSC's certification system verifies that the operation seeks to hire and purchase services and goods locally.

Your low maintenance condo still comes with some maintenance (NC) Condo living is appealing to many home buyers for a variety of reasons. One is the lack of traditional home maintenance tasks that are required in a freehold home. Although this is generally true, since things like snow removal, landscaping, and parking garages and are all managed for you – there are still some important home maintenance tasks. Remember this: 'Low maintenance' doesn't mean 'no maintenance' when it comes to condo living. As a condo owner, keeping your unit in good shape doesn't just help maintain the value, it also helps maintain your new home warranty rights. All new condominiums in Ontario come with a seven year warranty from your builder that is backed by Tarion. The shared areas in your condo, such as the roofing, parking structures, exterior cladding and any shared amenities, are covered under the common element warranty. While the condo corporation is responsible for maintaining the common elements, you still have separate responsibilities when it comes to your unit. Here are some important condo maintenance tips that will help ensure you become a successful home owner: 1. Make sure your humidity levels are healthy for you and your home. Humidity can have a tremendous effect on the finishes in your home. Too little or too much can cause different materials to warp, crack, split, peel, etc. Always use your home ventilation system to control moisture. Bathroom fans, kitchen range hoods and packaged ventilators such as heat-recovery ventilators are specifically installed in your home to help you control moisture and contaminants. Regular use of your

home ventilation system will exhaust excess airborne moisture caused by bathing, showering, doing laundry and cooking. So, one simple way to keep your unit healthy and protect your warranty rights is to make sure it has the right amount of humidity 2. Manage your warranty. Your condo's one, two and seven

year warranties take effect once you move into your new unit. It is important to pay attention to any defects that are present in your unit so you can report them on your warranty forms. The simplest way to manage your warranty is through Tarion's online service called MyHome. Through this service, you can easily submit warranty forms, send in

photos, get important updates and receive email alerts before warranty deadlines. In order to register for the MyHome, you will need your home enrolment number and date of possession. 3. Bring any common element issue to your condo board's attention. All condominiums come with some common elements. Recreation facilities such as pools, fitness facilities, party rooms and picnic spaces are some examples. These elements are all covered under a common element warranty that is managed by your condo's board of directors. As a unit owner, any damage to the common elements can have an effect on your living space. If you notice any defective areas, you should report these issues to the board in writing.

Cottage ownership: Know what you're buying (NC) There are few traditions more Canadian than weekends at the cottage. For many families, a cottage property provides the setting for both summer and winter holidays, and allows multiple generations to spend time together. To ensure that your time at the cottage is filled with relaxation instead of drama, be aware that cottage properties can differ from urban ones in important ways. Consulting a lawyer before you buy can protect you from unexpected problems. Limited road access Some cottages can be reached only by crossing a neighbour's property. Others have easements registered on title that allow neighbouring residents, or even

members of the general public, to travel across the land. Even where a cottage is accessed by a municipal road, its use might be seasonal only. This might mean the municipality won't provide garbage collection, snow removal or emergency services in winter. A lawyer can determine whether a cottage is subject to easements, and can tell you whether the access road is public or private. Shoreline rules Where a cottage is located on the water, there is often a shoreline road allowance along the water's edge that is owned by the local municipality. Unless the municipality has transferred the rights to this allowance to the individual property owners,

members of the public are entitled to walk, or in some cases even drive, along it. A lawyer can conduct searches to reveal whether there is an allowance and who owns it. There may also be rules about construction at the edge of, or extending into, the water. These rules can prevent you from building a dock or boathouse.

Apna Roots, May 20th, 2016 (NC) You may think any workout is better than no workout but when it comes to injury prevention this doesn't always hold true. “Most people feel mentally and physically great when they leave the gym,” says Anne Putnam, past president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada and a certified pedorthist. “However, if you're just starting an exercise program or are new to the equipment, it's important to take some precautions or your commitment to becoming more active may quickly result in you becoming less active as you recover from an injury.” Here are some tips from foot experts to reduce your risk of injury at the gym: • Ask gym staff to show you how to use each exercise machine properly or carefully read the instruction guide if you are using home equipment. • Beware of too much too soon. Try to gradually increase your workout time and intensity when starting a new

Work out injury free

exercise program. • Ensure you're wearing appropriate

footwear for your foot type as well as the activity that you are doing.

• Replace old, worn out footwear to ensure you are getting the appropriate support and cushioning. • If you experience foot pain, consult a certified pedorthist to determine if a foot orthotic or specific footwear would be beneficial. Putnam says heel pain, shin splints and forefoot pain are common injuries seen in newcomers to the gym. Although any exercise equipment can cause injuries, repetitive weight-bearing motions on machines such as the treadmill or elliptical can lead to injuries if an individual has poor technique, wears improper or worn out footwear or has a muscle imbalance or biomechanical problem with their feet or lower limbs. “The elliptical trainer provides a great workout and individuals often favour it because it is easy to use and usually in plentiful supply,” says Putnam. “However, as the foot never leaves the ground, and instead bends right at the forefoot, an elliptical machine puts a lot of pressure on this sensitive area.” To avoid injuries, Putnam says it is important to learn how to use gym equipment properly and to consult a certified pedorthist if you experience any lower limb pain following a workout. More information on foot injury prevention can be found at www.pedorthic.ca.

(NC) A little know-how can help golfers avoid unnecessary injury. Considering the number of times a swing is repeated during a game, it's not surprising that the season often ends early for those who are not physically prepared. Every year, Ontario's chiropractors say they treat countless golfers for injuries that could easily have been prevented. That's why the Ontario Chiropractic Association's public awareness campaign called Get in the Game Without the Pain, is one of their most popular programs year after year. Below are a few simple stretching techniques that can help prevent or reduce the impact of injuries: Side bending stretch 1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. 2. Hold the golf club above your head with your arms straight. 3. Slowly bend to one side, without rotating, until you feel a stretch in the side of your back. 4. Hold for 15 seconds and repeat twice for each side. Shoulder stretch 1. Hold the shaft of a golf club vertically behind your back. 2. Gently pull the club up with your top hand until you feel a slight stretch in the shoulder of your lower arm. Hold for 15 seconds.
