Trudeau, Liberal MPs Vote Against Tory Motion Declaring ISIS Atrocities As Genocide The Huffington Post Canada OTTAWA-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rose in the House of Commons Tuesday to vote against a Conservative motion declaring that the atrocities of the so-called Islamic State constitute genocide. His decision appeared to back up what Trudeau told the House minutes earlier: that partisan politicians shouldn't determine what is or isn't genocide. The Opposition motion — tabled by interim Tory leader Rona Ambrose — won the support of New Democrats, Bloc MPs, and four Liberal backbenchers: Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Anthony Housefather, Borys Wrzesnewskyj, and Karen Ludwig. It was defeated by the Grit majority in a vote of 166 to 139, sparking shouts of "Shame!" from some Tories. In a heated question period shortly before the vote,

Ambrose hammered Trudeau for hiding behind "weasel words" and lacking "moral clarity" when it comes to the terror group. She said that while allies in the U.S. House of Representatives and European Union state the obvious — that "ISIS' crimes against religious minorities, women and children, gays and lesbians" are genocide — the Liberal government refuses do the same. "If all our allies can find the moral resolve why can't our prime minister?" she asked. Trudeau responded that Liberals "strongly condemn" the actions of the terror group and have "formally requested" the United Nations Security Council make a determination if they constitute genocide. "We don't feel that politicians should be weighing in on this first and foremost," he said. "Determinations of genocide need to be made in an objective, responsible

way." Ambrose called that position a "lowpoint" for the Liberal party and a "dark spot" on Canada's human rights record. When he was pressed again on the case of thousands of Yazidi girls being murdered or turned into sex slaves, the prime minister was resolute that determinations of genocide must be done objec-

tively on the international stage. "We will not trivialize the importance of the word genocide by not respecting formal engagements around that word," he said. But Trudeau also added a dig at the Tories who have long argued he is soft on this issue. "I will take no lessons in playing politics from … a former government that used footage of ISIL executions in an attack ad against me," he said, referencing a wildly controversial 2015 video that appears to have since been scrubbed online. "Mr. Speaker, this isn't actually about him," Ambrose shot back. The interim Tory leader wondered aloud how far ISIS would need to go before the prime minister would recognize what's happening is genocide. Trudeau warned against playing petty politics with atrocities.

Developer Amar Sandhu dead after 'targeted' shooting Developer Amarjit Singh Sandhu, 56, dead after 'targeted' shooting in Richmond, B.C. More Police have identified the 56-yearold man shot in Richmond, B.C., Saturday night as a prominent developer, Amarjit Singh Sandhu. Sandhu died in hospital after the parking lot shooting left his truck riddled with bullets. Police say he was targeted. RCMP were called to the 11300 block of Steveston Highway shortly after 6 p.m. PT Saturday after reports that a man was shot in a Tim Hortons parking lot near the Ironwood Plaza. Police found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, and reported several bullet holes in the driver's side door of a black pickup truck. Targeted shooting The attack is targeted, police said in a written release on Sunday. "The act of homicide is one that is selfish and cold," said Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) "There is an extra element of

concern when one chooses to commit this crime in such a bold and brazen manner in a very public setting." No one else was injured. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation from Richmond RCMP. Sandhu is listed as president of Sandhill Developments Ltd, with main offices located across from where he was shot. He and the company are named in more than 80 civil lawsuits in B.C. dating back to the 1990s.

In a recent case, Sandhu took the Khalsa Diwan Society to court. His actions led to an election being called for leaders at the Ross Street Sikh temple in Vancouver, scheduled for September. An official with the party opposed to changes Sandhu was seeking at the temple believes the shooting is unrelated. "To my knowledge just for the sake of an election nobody would take such a big risk," said Ranjit Hayer with the Khalsa Diwan Society. People at the temple registering to vote in the elections say that Sandhu was at the temple before he went to Richmond and was gunned down. "He came, he was talking nice, you know," said Joginder Singh Sunner also with the Khalsa Diwan Society. "Then all of the sudden we heard the news that he got shot. That's terrible news. We have ... sympathy for the family." Police are urging anyone with information about the death to contact them. -CBC NEWS

Premier Clark sheds personal silence to help fight sexual violence By Canadian Press - BC Local News Premier Christy Clark revealed an intensely personal story today while explaining why her Liberal government is backing a private members bill on sexual assault. Clark says in an op-ed article published by the Vancouver Sun that for 35 years she has not spoken of being attacked when she was 13 when an unknown man tried to pull her into some bushes but she was able to struggle free. Clark says she has always wondered if, due to her silence, the man kept going until he caught a girl who could not get away. Clark says supporting the bill proposed by the Green party's leader is the right thing to do and she is privileged

to back the legislation as B.C.'s first elected female premier. The bill requires post-secondary institutions to implement

stand-alone policies to respond to sexual violence. Clark says even though she didn't have the courage to speak about assault at the age of 13, she does now. "I remember all of the sexual advances from strangers: getting flashed, groped, spied on," Clark writes. Since coming forward with her own experience, she says almost every female colleague and friend has shared a similar tale, and none has spoken up. "I want women who have never said anything about sexual violence in their lives to know they are not alone," says the premier, while urging institutions where women live, work and study to understand the breadth of the problem. "Let's get to work on addressing it."

B.C. finance minister changes freedom-ofinformation rules after media complaints

VICTORIA — B.C.’s finance minister is set to unveil changes to freedom of information rules on Wednesday in response to concerns from journalists. Mike de Jong will announce he’s allowing more time for people to review documents they get from government under an FOI request before those records are posted online for the public to see. A person gets 72 hours before their completed FOI package is uploaded to a government website for anyone to download. That’s expected to change to five business days under a ministerial directive signed by de Jong. Some journalists had complained the 72-hour period — which has been the policy for several years — was unfair to freelancers and weekly publications because they weren’t able to publish stories about government records they had specifically asked for before that information was shared publicly. As well, the new ministerial order will alter a proposal by government to post summaries of all active FOI requests online before they are complete. Some journalists had argued that if government shared details of what they had requested, it would tip-off other media outlets. De Jong is expected to introduce a 30-day delay between when a person submits an FOI request and when a summary of their application is posted online. The changes are part of reforms de Jong announced last month to the FOI system, including faster disclosure, reduced political interference and $3 million in extra money to clear backlogs and improve response times. B.C.’s privacy commissioner has criticized the government for its improper destruction of email records and culture of avoidance of creating paper records of decisions. -Vancouver Sun

Man shot, killed in broad daylight near busy Toronto intersection is a former gangster from Vancouver BY KIM BOLAN, POSTMEDIA NEWS A former Vancouver gangster was shot to death in Toronto Tuesday afternoon in a brazen attack that surprised even local police. Sukh Deo, 34, was inside a white Range Rover when two men started firing at him just before 3 p.m. in an alley near the busy intersection of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue. Toronto police Supt. Reuben Stroble told reporters at the scene that the fatal shooting “is a big surprise for this area, especially at this time of day.” The luxury vehicle had at least 14

nephew, who was married with young children, had moved to Toronto a few years ago and was running a trucking company with a friend. “I went there in May and I stayed with him a few days. He took me to where those trucking businesses are,” Deo said, adding that he has no idea why his nephew would have been targeted. “I really can’t say anything. It’s hard for me to say anything because he was over there.” SukhDeo was well-known to police in the Lower Mainland, where he was a suspect in at least one continuing investigation at the time of his murder. He had convictions in B.C. for resisting a police officer, driving while suspended and assault.

His brother Harjit was convicted in a 2005 gangland kidnapping along with others in the Independent Soldiers gang. The kidnap victim had been held in the garage of the Deo family home in New Westminster, B.C., where police later arrested several suspects. Sukh’s father Parminder is wanted on an Interpol warrant on drug smuggling charges laid in India. He earlier told the Vancouver Sun he was innocent and had hired a lawyer in the Punjab to fight the case. SukhDeo was an avid fan of the Toronto Raptors, his uncle said. Just last month, he was ejected from his courtside seat at Game 4 of the Raptors’ playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers after heckling the referees “All our kids, they watched him on that day,” Deo said. “He was a really big fan of that team. He always goes to watch the games.” Toronto police said on Twitter that they’re looking for two men in Deo’s murder. They were seen fleeing the area in a black car. Both were wearing construction vests — one green and one orange. Anyone with information about his murder is asked to call the Toronto Police Service homicide squad at 1-416-8082222 or Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477.

When a private tragedy becomes a public spectacle: Toronto Star Public Editor By: Kathy English Toronto Star The union that represents Toronto Star newsroom employees called Tuesday for an independent investigation into the death of a Star reporter who recently took her own life. By all reports of those closest to her, the last thing this award-winning global environment reporter wanted was to be the focus of this story about her suicide and its aftermath. She left explicit instructions that this very thing should not happen (“Please don’t talk about me. Please don’t let anyone write about me,” she wrote.) Nor did she want an obituary in the Star, the Star’s common practice when one of its newsroom employees dies. Her family also made clear those explicit wishes and the Star had tried to respect that. I know for certain that I am letting Raveena Aulakh down in writing this story in my role as public editor tasked with reporting to our readers about her death in light of this now public call for an independent investigation. I can say that because several years ago, she sent me a note about my role at the Star, telling me, “You have never let a Star reporter become a public spectacle and that comes from owning up to mistakes quickly and honestly before it spirals out of control.” This tragedy should not be a public spectacle and I wish it had not come to this. Certainly, serious mistakes of a

personal nature have been made, and relatively quick and serious action taken by the Star as a result. But, sadly, too much here has spiralled out of control and in making this reporter’s death “news” in the interests of the “transparency” today’s journalism

seems to always demand we are all doing exactly what Raveena, 42, implored against. The Star’s policy on suicide says that the Star generally does not cover suicide unless there is some overriding public interest in doing so. While I, and Star editor Michael Cooke, questioned this in a 2012 public editor column on media coverage of the traditionally taboo subject of suicide, I also made clear in a previous column about suicide coverage my grave concerns that writing more openly about suicide could lead to intruding on the privacy of grieving families. To me, the wishes of the family are paramount and I am sorry we are going against the wishes of Raveena’s family here.

Bank of Canada's governor warns about Vancouver, Toronto home prices OTTAWA – The Bank of Canada is warning that the possibility of a sharp correction in real estate prices has increased in rapidly growing markets like Vancouver and Toronto. In its latest assessment of Canada’s financial health, the central bank takes aim at the housing sector, saying that vulnerabilities due to the continued rise of household debt and greater imbalances in regional housing markets are higher than they were six months ago. Governor Stephen Poloz says buyers and banks “should not extrapolate recent real estate performance into the future.” The bank says year-over-year house price growth in the greater Vancouver area hit 30 per cent last month, up from 15 per cent in December. BY RICHARD DETTMAN AND THE CANADIAN PRESS

Journalists use the word tragedy a lot in reporting on the sad things of our world and to use it here seems to me to somehow belittle the dark grief so many of us feel now that one of us has died in such a heartbreaking manner. The Star’s newsroom is reeling, trying to make sense of the reality that Raveena chose not to live any longer. I have worked in newsrooms for 40 years and have never seen anything like the level of grief and anger exploding here. “The newsroom is heartbroken and angry. Employees want answers. Workplace health and safety is at stake,” said a letter dated Tuesday from Unifor’s Toronto Star Unit, Local 87M to Brian Daly, the Star’s vice-president of human resources. Those in the highest levels of senior management at the Star have told me they have conducted a thorough following internal investigation revelations and allegations made by the reporter in emails sent to several people in the newsroom shortly before she died. Those emails revealed that Raveena and Jon Filson, the senior manager, who had led the Star’s tablet project in the past year, had been involved in a relationship for some time that had ended recently. Further, the clearly heartbroken reporter made allegations in those emails about an improper relationship between Filson and his boss, managing editor Jane Davenport.

Walmart Canada will no longer accept Visa due to 'unacceptably high' fees TORONTO - Walmart says it intends to join the list of retailers in Canada that don't accept Visa cards, citing high fees for transactions. It's a move a retail analyst has said will cause "pain on all sides." All credit cards charge fees to retailers, which generally are between one per cent and 2.5 per cent of the cost of what's being sold. The fees depend on the type of card the customer is using — cash-back and premium cards generally have higher fees — and the type of retailer they're shopping at. Walmart Canada quietly made the announcement on Saturday that it would gradually stop accepting Visa cards at all of its locations, citing "unacceptably high" fees. But a statement from Visa said the credit card company offered Walmart "one of the lowest rates available to any merchant in the country." Doug Stephens, a Toronto-based retail analyst and strategist, noted that both sides will likely

see disadvantages to this deal. "If you can't walk into a mass merchant and use a Visa card, that's going to seem very strange," Stephens said. "You can't ignore the fact that Visa has a tremendous market share," he said. But he added, "If you do business with Walmart, and Walmart ceases to do business with you, you can't help but feel that." Consumer finance industry newsletter Nilson Report says that Visa made up 56 per cent of credit card

transactions globally in 2015, and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Walmart Canada's parent company, is widely reported to be the world's largest retailer. "At the end of the day, when we strip everything out of the debate, we're dealing with the potential that six out of ten customers will come into a Walmart store and be disappointed that they can't use their credit card," Stephens said. "Competition is extremely tough. This is not a good time to limit your consumer's ability to buy from you." He pointed out that this isn't the first time the two titans have clashed — in the U.S., Wal-Mart is currently suing Visa for the methods it uses to verify transactions, and the companies have also reportedly butted heads over fees, although American stores will still accept Visa cards despite the change in Canada. : BY THE CANADIAN PRESS

Sheriff: Charges unlikely after 2-year-old killed by gator LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A sheriff said charges are unlikely against a Nebraska couple after an alligator killed their 2-year-old son by snatching him out of shallow water at a Walt Disney World beach, but the entertainment giant is reviewing whether to add gator warning signs. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings told The Associated Press after a news conference Wednesday there was no indication Matt and Melissa Graves of suburban Omaha, Nebraska, committed any crime that contributed to the reptile grabbing their son, Lane Graves. “There’s nothing in this case to indicate that there was anything extraordinary” in terms of neglect by the parents, Demings said. Demings said his department and the state wildlife agency would look into the issue of signs around Seven Seas Lagoon, where Disney had posted “no swimming” signs but no warnings about the presence of alligators. Searchers removed five of the reptiles from the

water while looking for the child, who was attacked at a small beach area near nightfall Tuesday. A Disney representative, speaking on condition of anonymity because the company had yet to prepare a formal statement, said Disney would “thoroughly review” the sign issue in the future. Beaches that were closed during the search remained off limits to visitors, the company said. Divers found the child’s body about 16 hours after authorities first got the call that a reptile had taken the boy at Seven Seas Lagoon, which borders the Magic Kingdom theme park. The park is one of the world’s most popular tourist spots, drawing millions of visitors

annually. Demings said it appeared the gator drowned the child and left the body near the spot where he was last seen. An autopsy was planned. “Of course the family was distraught, but also I believe somewhat relieved that his body was found intact,” Demings told a news conference. A family friend released a statement on behalf of the Graves thanking well-wishers for their “thoughts and hope-filled prayers.” CEO Michael Iaccarino of Infogroup, a marketing company where Matt Graves is chief data officer, said Graves’ family “is the light of his life.” In the family’s hometown of Elkhorn, Nebraska, friends and neighbours reacted with disbelief and shock. The principal of their church parish described the Graves parents as caring and attentive parents. : BY JAY REEVES, JASON DEAREN AND TERRANCE HARRIS, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-by9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Some cells already contain numbers, known as givens. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Every row, every column and every 3-by-3 subgrid should contain digits 1 to 9 only.

Two Abbotsford gangsters have been charged in the fatal 2010 shooting of a young mother and the attempted murder of her gangster boyfriend.

Gavinder Grewal, who police have issued warnings about in the past, has been charged with manslaughter for the July 2010 shooting that killed Mandy

He faces one count of second-degree murder and one of attempted murder. on July 28, 2010 as she sat in the passenger’s seat of Browne’s vehicle near Poplar Avenue and Townline Road. Her mother issued a statement through the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team Wednesday. “Mandy was innocent and did not deserve to die. along with unlawful possession under the Excise Act. CBSA says its border officers in Saskatchewan made 45 seizures of undeclared tobacco products last year. In 2015, officers seized 24,137 cigarette cartons, 134 cigars, and 45,067 kilograms of other tobacco products across the country.

loved her, forever. Her only fault was falling in love with a guy that didn’t deserve her and trusting that her love would be enough. It was not enough and she sadly paid with her life.” The mother said the pain of losing her daughter would never go away. “As I look back at the last six years I know that these charges did not come without dedication and commitment and, as my family and I move through the next chapter of this process, I want to thank all of the investigators whose hard work and perseverance will finally bring justice for Mandy.” Browne, who was not injured in the deadly shooting, later admitted on his Facebook page that he was the intended target. And he threatened to name the killers. He also openly plotted revenge. “Hey you goofs, why don’t you come finish what you started and do it rite this time but instead you kill my old laddy and not me now i am going to make your lifes not worth living,” Browne wrote on Oct. 6, 2010. “Or should i plaster your … names all over face book so everyone knows who murdered mandie who wants to know who did this to mandie?” Browne later told a judge that his life spiraled out of control after the murder. He said he had been prepared to leave gang life behind when he fell in love Johnson. But after he lost her, he started using drugs daily and carrying a loaded gun. He was arrested in Surrey after a high-speed police chase and in 2012 was sentenced to four and a half years in jail. Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound said the case “is another example of how difficult homicide investigations can be.” “IHIT has remained committed to obtaining justice for Mandy Johnson despite the passage of time and we would be remiss if we did not thank the family and friends for their patience,” she said. Himpfen has a lengthy criminal history dating back 20 years across the Lower Mainland, including convictions for assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property, theft , breaches, drug trafficking and possession of a loaded restricted firearm. Grewal has a criminal conviction for extortion and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He is prohibited from possessing firearms. Grewal, along with two associates, was the subject of an extraordinary public warning by the Abbotsford Police Department last year. All three were believed to be involved in the “Townline Hill conflict” that has led to several shootings. One of the three, Jimi Sandhu, was deported to his native India in April. -By kbolan@postmedia.com

Kamal Nath quitting as in-charge of Punjab shows bankruptcy of leaders in Congress By resigning as the party general secretary and giving up charge of Punjab and Haryana, senior Congress leader Kamal Nath — and one of the few who managed to save their skin in the 2014 defeat of the party in the general elections — has stirred a hornet's nest. Despite his intentions to pre-empt and save the battered Congress from any more damage — as his appointment as the in-charge of Punjab ahead of the Assembly elections in the state next year has come under immense public flak because of the stigma of 1984 riots that he still carries — he may just have underscored the party’s insensitivity and laid it open in front

of the public at such a crucial moment. Is this how bankrupt the party has become in terms of leadership? They had to pick up the one allegedly tainted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to prepare for an election in the state of Punjab? Soon after Kamal Nath's appointment, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had said, "It is an unbelievable brazen act of insensitivity towards Sikhs and crass and vulgar disregard of national opinion on the guilty of the massacre of thousands of innocent Sikh children, men and women by Congress goons in November 1984. I just cannot believe a political party

can be so brutally insensitive to the sentiments of Sikhs." With eyes on forthcoming assembly polls next year, Congress president Sonia Gandhi appointed Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kamal Nath as general secretaries respectively for

Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, which was seen as an important organisational revamp. Former in-charge of Punjab Kamal Nath. Image courtesy: ScreenshotFormer in-charge of Punjab Kamal Nath. Image courtesy: Screenshot However, little did the Congress realise that Kamal Nath's appointment would backfire. Soon after that, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab, and the Aam Admi Party (AAP) had gone all guns blazing at the former Union minister. Eminent lawyer and an AAP leader, HS Phoolka had said, "The Congress is rewarding Kamal Nath for obeying (then Prime Minister) Rajiv Gandhi’s orders during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi." Phoolka is well known for spearheading the crusade to seek justice for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots of New Delhi, following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Nearly 2,733 Sikhs were killed in the riots and over 50,000 were displaced within two days. Though the Nanavati Commission, investigating the riots, eventually absolved Kamal Nath of any wrongdoing during the 1984 riots, he has been alleged, by at least two eye-witnesses of the riots, as being present in the mob outside Gurudwara Rakabganj in New Delhi that attacked the devotees on 1 November, 1984, the day after Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

Congress to name Sheila Dikshit as UP Chief Ministerial candidate?

Congress leader and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit could be fielded as the chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh, according to news channel NDTV. Dikshit on Thursday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul in Delhi. Speculation is rife among party circles that the leadership is likely to propose her name for leading the Congress campaign in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress had roped in poll strategist Prashant Kishor to guide the party in the crucial state assembly elections, scheduled for next year. Kishor previously proposed Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul’s name as the party’s CM face, but the idea was soon dropped.

What Rahat Fateh Ali has to say about 'Salman-Arijit' controversy?

Singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan says he was not "aware" that the song which he sang for Salman Khan's 'Sultan' was originally recorded by Arijit Singh. Recently, Arijit had written a public apology to the 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' star asking him to retain a song which he had sung for his upcoming film directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. According to the reports, the song 'Jag Ghoomeya' was initially recorded by the 'Tum Hi Ho' singer, but was, however, re-recorded in Rahat's voice. When asked about this, the singer told reporters, "First of all, I was not aware if anyone had sung it before. I just came, I sung the song and that's it. What happened after that I don't know." The singer was speaking at the launch of T-Series' new single 'Dillagi'. The song has been composed by SalimSulaiman and features Vidyut Jammwal and Huma Qureshi. The music composer duo has given music for many A-listers. When asked if there is a pressure from stars to make a particular singer croon a track, Salim said they have been "fortunate" not to have any such incidents. "Fortunately we have never faced that pressure, ever. We worked with some amazing filmmakers and directors, who were very open and respectful about our work and they want us to work with whoever we want to," Salim said. "There is always a wish list, I remember we were working in 'Heroine' and there was a song where Madhur Bhandarkar was very keen that we work with Sunidhi Chauhan," he said. His co-

composer Sulaiman said the decision to make a particular singer croon a track is

just like that of casting for a film. "When we make music, we make it for films. In a film what happens is you cast. The director casts the actors, cameraman, the DOP (director of photography). In the same way when we make music we cast singers the way the requirement of the song is," he said. "Usually the director and producer agree with us. When there is a need for a certain casting, we try and achieve that kind of casting," he added.

Kajal tries to strike a balance between Hindi, South films Actress Kajal Aggarwal says she is prepared for her Bollywood career to move at a slow pace as she has films to do in other languages as well. Kajal made her full-fledged Bollywood debut with Ajay Devgn-starrer "Singham" in 2011 and later starred opposite Akshay Kumar in "Special 26" (2013). Now three years later, she is gearing up for her third Hindi release - "Do Lafzon Ki Kahani" opposite Randeep Hooda. When asked about the long gap and going slow in Bollywood, Kajal told PTI, "I am trying to strike a balance among all three (Tamil, Telugu and Hindi) cinemas. It is bound to go slow as I cannot be in all the three industries at the same time." "I have been fortunate enough to choose the best of whatever I get in any industry. I have been maintaining balance between Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films so there is bound to be a gap. I can't be omnipresent," she said. The 30 year old actress is happy with the way her career in Bollywood is shaping up. By Santa Banta News Network

'Udta Punjab': Fresh battle begins between Bollywood, CBFC Bollywood is angry with the country's censor board, yet again. While actors and filmmakers have condemned the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for demanding the removal of any reference to Punjab in "Udta Punjab" -- a forthcoming film on the drug issue of the state -- its co-producer Anurag Kashyap has said the situation is as dictatorial as living in North Korea. The CBFC -- chaired by the BJPappointed Pahlaj Nihalani -- is said to have reportedly demanded an alteration of the narrative with as many as 89 cuts. The makers were apparently even asked to drop 'Punjab', and suggested that the film be set in a fictitious setting instead of a particular state. Reacting to this, Kashyap commented on Twitter: "There is no film more honest than 'Udta Punjab'... And any person or party opposing it is actually guilty of promoting drugs". He then took on Nihalani, calling him a "dictatorial man", who operates "like an oligarch", bringing the North Korea feel to India. "I always wondered what it felt like to live in North Korea... Ab to plane pakadney ki bhi zaroorat nahin (Now I don't even need to catch a plane)," Kashyap tweeted, alluding to the dictatorial regime in North Korea. The CBFC's demand for alterations in the Abhishek Chaubey directorial is likely to have been made under pressure from the ruling Akali Dal-BJP coalition in Punjab, where the extent of the substance abuse is placed by several surveys at over 70 per cent of the state's 2.8 crore population. And the release of the movie when the state is less than nine months from

the assembly elections is likely to be seen as politically disastrous for the state's ruling party. The controversy around the film also took a political twist when Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal tweeted "I completely agree" to Kashyap's tweet on his film being an "honest" representation. Even Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi come out in support of the film fraternity, tweeting on his official Twitter handle Office of RG: "Punjab has a crippling drug problem. Censoring #UdtaPunjab will not fix it. The government must accept the reality and find solutions." However, Kashyap requested "Congress, AAP and other political parties to stay out of my battle". "It's my Rights vs the Censorship. I speak only on my behalf... It's my fight Vs a dictatorial man sitting there operating like an oligarch in his constituency of censor board, that's my North Korea."

Kashyap also said that his fight was not political. "Please don't colour my fight with any political affiliation because there is none." "Udta Punjab", which Anurag Kashyap's Phantom Films has coproduced with Balaji Motion Pictures, stars an ensemble cast of actors like Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh. Slated to release on June 17, it dwells on how the youth of Punjab have succumbed to drugs. The industry at large supported the makers. Veteran actor Jeetendra of Balaji Motion Pictures, who calls himself a "proud son of Punjab", asserted that the film is not made to defame the state. Sharing his father's message with twitterati, Tusshar Kapoor wrote: "Jeetendra: We respect the people of Punjab and certainly would never want to hurt their sentiments. We have and will always go by whatever right advice the CBFC gives! Films are for entertainment, not for defamation and

we have no such intention as I, myself, am a proud son of Punjab." Bollywood celebrities like Mahesh Bhatt, Hansal Mehta and Karan Johar also slammed the CBFC for its unwarranted diktat. "Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance. Is Pahlaj Nihalani listening," Bhatt wrote. A "very, very angry" Mehta questioned, "Why is the establishment so scared of films that mirror reality? Can the truth defame a state?" Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani said: "I guess the next step will be to submit scripts for censorship. 'Udta Punjab' censored." Actress Soha Ali Khan commented: "Anyone who says that drugs are not a problem in Punjab, is either unaware, complicite or has mala fide intention." Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur opined, "Apparently the Indian censor board believes there is no drug problem amongst the youth of Punjab." -By Santa Banta Network

Housefull : The mass entertainer is back! Review

By Taran Adarsh/IndiaFM At the very start of the film, Sajid Khan pays his respects to several notable names of the 1970s and 1980s, who redefined Hindi commercial cinema. And that gives you ample idea of what to expect from Housefull, which, very frankly, stresses on wholesome entertainment like those wonderful entertainers made by Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, Feroz Khan, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, K Raghavendra Rao, Narendra Bedi, Ravi Tandon and Brij. No wonder, films made by these icons have tremendous recall value even today. The two things you expect from Housefull are non-stop laughter and non-stop entertainment. That's because the promos of the film have already given you an inkling of what to expect from this film. Besides, Sajid Khan swears by wholesome entertainers, so it's only natural to expect Housefull to bring the house down. We loved Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra's movies because they transported us to a world of make believe, into a fantasy world, keeping us thoroughly entertained for those three hours. Obviously, we never questioned the logic then because we knew that entertainment was the keyword. Housefull takes the same route. Housefull entertains majorly at places, but it's an uneven ride. Uneven, because the pace dips at several places. It's not a rip-roaring laugh-riot or a non-stop laughathon that one expects it would be, since the focus is on emotions and

drama as well. Even the climax, I am sure, will meet with diverse reactions. It will have its share of advocates and adversaries. Final word? The actors are top notch and so are their performances. Wish the script would've been equally super. Yet, despite the hiccups, Housefull should be lapped by moviegoers in a big way because the audience is starved for that solid entertainer with big stars for more than two months now. Housefull narrates the story of Aarush (Akshay Kumar), the world's unluckiest man. Being jinxed, he believes his bad luck can vanish if he finds true love. In this quest for true love, he gets married to the daughter (Jiah Khan) of a wealthy businessman Kishore Samtani (Randhir Kapoor). But there's a twist in the tale. Enter Sandy (Deepika Padukone), who falls in love with Aarush. But complications follow thereafter as Sandy's brother, Major Krishna Rao (Arjun Rampal) and Hetal's (Lara Dutta) father, Batuk Patel (Boman

Irani) enter the scene. How Aarush and his buddy Bob (Riteish Deshmukh) come out of this mess, forms the crux of the film. Like Heyy Babyy, Housefull has a story to tell as well. It's not merely an assemblage of funny sequences or a mere montage of comic scenes. But some of the funny sequences are sure to make you flex your facial muscles wide. Note Akshay's intro, or the sequence involving the vacuum cleaner, or Akshay getting a pet home, or the entire Chunkey Pandey track in Italy. Simply howlarious! Sajid balances the dramatic moments well. The Jiah Khan sequence soon after the marriage is very interesting and so are the sequences in the second hour, when Arjun and also Boman land up at the mansion. The comedy of errors is truly funny at times

and also the gay angle, which has been injected in this half. It may not be as memorable as the Kantaben track in Kal Ho Naa Ho, but is funny nonetheless. Talking of dramatic sequences, the ones between Akshay and Arjun are fantastic, especially the lie detector test, which is amongst the best sequences of the film. Director Sajid Khan knows his fundas right. He packs just about everything to entertain you for the next two hours, but the screenplay could've been tighter. While the pacing is slow in the first hour, it's the second half which has a lot to offer. Overall, Sajid jumps into the big league of filmmakers who make films for the masses and successfully at that! Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is pleasant. Vikas Sivaraman's cinematography is top notch. The locales of Italy are mindboggling. Every actor in this film takes the film to the next level. Akshay underplays his part beautifully. All those who felt that the actor tends to get loud or needs to be controlled will change their opinion with this film. He's the soul of Housefull. Riteish is incredibly natural. I've often felt that Riteish is one actor who doesn't give you an impression that he's 'acting'. Though the story primarily revolves around Akshay, Riteish stands shoulder to shoulder with Akshay in this one. Arjun Rampal is fantastic. Post Om Shanti Om and Rock On!!, Housefull is yet another film that taps Arjun's talent to the maximum. Deepika is a surprise.

How to research the warranty status on a home under 7 years-old (NC) Buying a newly built home that is under warranty doesn't necessarily mean you have purchased directly from a builder. To fully understand your rights, here's some background. Almost all new homes built in Ontario come with a warranty that is provided by the builder, and backed by Tarion. The warranties last for the first seven years of a new home, and cover defects in workmanship, violations of the Ontario Building Code, and major structural damage. This warranty stays with the home regardless of how many owners have been involved. But when a home has been previously owned there are important things you should know about its history that may have an effect on its warranty. The key is to make an effort to understand a home's history before signing the purchase agreement. Here are a few tips to follow if you are purchasing a recently constructed home that is less than seven years old:

Get disclosure When buying a resale home, find out whether there are or have been any issues since it was built. One way to obtain this information is to request a Seller Property Information Statement (SPIS). This form is filled out by the seller and contains information such as known defects and any pending claims under Tarion. Buyer beware! Not only is this form voluntary, it may also tell only part of the story. The onus is really on the purchaser to investigate the state of the home he or she is buying. Therefore, the SPIS should not replace

your own home inspection. Look into previous issues If you are thinking of buying a resale condominium, you'll want to know whether major work needs to be done to the building, the amount in the building's reserve fund, and whether it is sufficient to cover this work. You can find this out by having your lawyer review the Status Certificate, and ensuring your agreement

of purchase and sale is conditional upon this review. Once you sign a purchase agreement, you can contact Tarion directly to inquire whether there are any past or pending claims on the house or condominium. Previous claims may reduce the amount of warranty coverage on a home. Research past renovations and repairs A home's warranty covers defects in work and materials provided by the builder only. If a contractor was hired to add on to the home or make renovations, the builder will not be responsible for any of those renovations. Any work done by a contractor that negatively impacts a home's major systems and causes defects to the builder's work will not be covered under the warranty. Finally, if you purchase a resale home that is less than seven years old, get to know the warranty coverage. All the information you'll need to understand it better is available at Tarion.com.

What's new in sports nutrition this summer? (NC) Adding activity to your routine is a key contributor to health and happiness and the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) is dedicated to helping Canadians live to the fullest and achieve their health goals. With your summer workout routine in mind, CHFA's in-house holistic nutritionist, Michelle W. Book, has a few tips to help you improve power, enhance performance and optimize hydration: Boosting power When looking to boost your power or strength at the gym, you want to stimulate new muscle growth through resistance and endurance training. How effectively you repair and build muscle depends on the availability of protein in your body. Make sure your muscles have access to the protein they need by consuming protein-rich whole foods like lean meats, eggs and fish, and vegetable sources such as beans, lentils and legumes, nuts and seeds, tofu, and grains like quinoa. If you're looking to supplements for a convenient source of protein, wheyand casein-based proteins from dairy sources are the most popular, but the growing trend towards plant-based foods and supplements has led to an increasing number of plant-based protein powders,

“Making sure you're getting enough of these vitamins and minerals from foods or supplements is crucial, Book says, “not just for your overall health, but also for optimal performance when you exercise.

including pea, hemp, soy and rice protein. These are available at a CHFA Member health food store in your community. Experiment with a few different options to find the fit that's right for you. Enhancing performance Can you push harder, run faster, reach farther and dig deeper? “Fuelling smartly before a workout with complex carbohydrates for sustained energy release can give you an edge to push yourself that extra bit, Michelle Book explains. Chia seeds are a great source of carbs and also deliver protein and

Quick tips to get started if you have a legal problem (NC) Did you know that a 2009 Department of Justice report found that over 85 percent of people surveyed did not seek help when facing a legal problem? Don't let this happen to you. The Law Society of Upper Canada offers three, free resources on its website at www.lsuc.on.ca, to help you explore your legal options. Here's an outline of the services available: 1. The Law Society Referral Service. Use this online service available at www.findlegalhelp.ca to obtain a free, up to 30-minute consultation with a lawyer or paralegal. You can ask for a referral to a lawyer or paralegal who speaks your language, or a lawyer who accepts legal aid certificates. For people unable to

access the online service, such as those in a shelter or residing in a remote community without internet access, a crisis line is available during regular business hours at 1-855-9475255 or 416-947-5255. 2. Lawyer and Paralegal Directory. This online directory of licensed legal professionals enables you to search for a lawyer or paralegal by name, location or legal practice area. 3. The Handling Everyday Legal Problems Guide. This user-friendly quick reference guide provides brief descriptions and contact information for free legal information sources — and it outlines free and low-cost legal service providers. A version of the guide focuses on Indigenous legal services and is available in three First Nation languages —Cree, Oji-Cree and Northwestern Ojibway.

omega-3 fats. Whole grains like brown rice are also packed with complex carbs for sustained energy release while being low in calories. Chickpeas are another surprising energy-rich food, packed with protein for an added boost. “Omega-3s are an often-overlooked supplement that can help to enhance your performance, Book points out. These are heart-healthy fats that not only protect our blood vessels, but their antiinflammatory effects help to reduce muscle soreness after a workout, as well. B-vitamins, including Finally, vitamin B3 and vitamin B6 are key players in the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which helps us contract our muscles and process carbs for energy.

Optimizing hydration One of the drivers of athletic performance is maintaining the balance of fluid and electrolytes in our bodies. Body fluids are essential for removing waste and toxins, maintaining proper neural and muscle function, regulating body temperature, delivering fuel, and taking the brunt of shock absorption while lubricating our joints. “Skip the energy drink and try coconut water or maple water, which are naturally rich in electrolytes, Book explains. Electrolytes are minerals, like sodium, chloride, magnesium and calcium, which keep neurons firing and muscles contracting. Canadians are becoming more aware of the role nutrition plays in taking their exercise goals up a notch. Some are pushing for a new personal best time on a 10-kilometre run, while others want to add some lean muscle and lose a few centimetres around the belly, and many are looking to boost their energy. Visit chfa.ca to learn more about how you can reach these goals and more. This site will also help you locate a natural health retailer to assist you on the journey.

Olympic skater is helping Canadians to control the cost of medications (NC) Two-time Olympic gold medalist Catriona Le May Doan has teamed up with Canadian healthcare company STI Technologies Limited to underscore the importance of choice when it comes to our individual healthcare. Once the fastest female speed skater in the world, Le May Doan says she now suffers from chronic pain and arthritis as a result of years of grueling training for thousands of national and international races. “Pain is an unfortunate symptom of high-level competition, but it certainly doesn't have to control your life, she says. Her treatment plans have allowed her to remain healthy, fit and energetic well into her forties. Although no longer competing on the ice, the now mother of two says she remains highly active with her husband and children. From broadcasting, to

Catriona Le May Doan, innoviCares Ambassador work with the Canadian Special Olympics, to coaching her daughter's ringette team, Le May Doan says she refuses to slow down.

“I've only ever known one speed. As we get older, we have the choice to either keep up, or we face getting left behind. I've made my choice. The skater says finding a treatment plan that works for an individual is similar to an athlete choosing the right training program. “You really have to explore your options and when you find something that works for you, it's important to stick with it – consistency is a major key to success. STI Technologies, creators of the innoviCares prescription savings card, says its product gives people dealing with health issues – like Le May Doan – the choice to be on the brand-name medication that their doctors prescribed by removing some, or all of the financial barriers. “My doctor and I chose the treatment that works best for me and I believe every Canadian should have

DIY tips to get your backyard ready for summer (NC) The thick bed of snow that covered your backyard over the winter didn't offer much in the dĂŠcor department and it likely left you dreaming about the warmer months ahead. So now that your perennials are giving life back to the scene, why not give your whole backyard some DIY love to get everything looking like summer again? Here are a few tips to help you: Decorate and add personalized touches. Bring the indoors outside with colourful pillows, candles and even a rug. An upcycled antique door or window looks great propped up or mounted on a fence. Get creative! Design the gardens with sustainable polish. Make your vibrant garden a focal point of the backyard

Manufacturers Multy Home and New Rubber Technologies produce robust and environmentallyfriendly items for the home, including garden edging, flooring and stepping stones made right here in Ontario. From organic to liquid to granular, the right one can help your garden to blossom. Be sure to ask a gardening expert what's best for your

access to the same thing, regardless of cost or drug plan. According to the innoviCares website, the free card works to cover up the difference in cost between a brandname medication and its generic alternative. In other cases, innoviCares will cover some or all of the cost of a participating product. The card can be used with or without an existing drug plan. Tim Gillis, STI Technologies CEO, says that Le May Doan's story of success – both on and off the ice – is what inspired the company to partner with her. “Not many people are willing to talk so openly about their personal struggles, especially after the incredible personal triumphs Catriona has experienced, Gillis points out. “She reminds us all that everyone faces tough healthcare decisions every day and we should all understand that each and every one of us has a choice. The Halifax-based company says it is now the largest free prescription savings card in Canada with over 1.5 million patients already saving nationally. Gillis explains that innoviCares is available online and is accepted at more than 98 per cent of Canadian pharmacies. “We started the program with the goal of empowering Canadians to take control of their health and we're thrilled now to be helping patients access the medications prescribed by their physician. You can now receive payment assistance on more than 100 brands, and growing. Catriona Le May Doan will be sharing her story and keys to success in major cities across Canada in the next few weeks – and more information is available at innovicares.ca.v

Don't let an overloaded car send you packing this summer 3. Lose Your Trail To avoid threats from cybercriminals while away, turn off GPS tracking when not in use and do not grant location access to your apps. And while meeting new friends is one of the best parts of travelling, feel free to say “no” to strangers who offer to use your phone to get a picture of you. Ask them to pose with you instead.

(NC) Today a smartphone is an essential part of your luggage, wherever you roam. Whether you're a senior heading out to explore the world, a family off on vacation, or a student going abroad, these four tips will keep you and your smartphone safe along the way: 1. Book Carefully Booking travel and accommodations has never been easier, but that convenience comes with risks. Only use reputable online travel agencies or go directly to the source for airline tickets or hotel reservations, such as the airline and hotel websites. “The rule of thumb: if it sounds too good to be true, it is,” says Shelly Smith, director at Telus Wise.

2. Enhance Your Wi-Fi Security Wireless Internet is nearly ubiquitous, even in remote places. Using open networks is a great way to stay in touch although it can make you

vulnerable. “Protect yourself by downloading and using a VPN app, like Express VPN or VyprVPN,” Smith explains. “This will secure your data and ward off cybercriminals.”

4. Keep Tabs on Your Phone You should always use a strong password with acronyms, numbers and symbols and keep your device in closed compartments. But what happens if your phone decides to go on a vacation of its own? Guard against loss by putting your hotel's contact information on the lock screen in case someone picks it up. Or install a tracking app such as Find My iPhone or Lookout Security & Antivirus, but don't go looking for it without assistance or you might put yourself in danger. Now you're ready to pack your bags. You can learn more about staying safe while travelling with your smartphone at telus.com/wise.

(NC) You don't need to go far to get a relaxing break. Staycations are a clever way to have a vacation on a budget while seeing your city in a new way. So if you would like some ideas, take a look at these top tips from the travel savvy team at Holiday Inn: • Be open to adventure. Research the attractions in your city that are popular with tourists, especially those you haven't visited before. Walking tours or dining at new restaurants can make you feel like you have travelled to a new place. • Treat yourself. While you're saving money on an international flight you can indulge a bit at high-end shops or spas that you would only dream of visiting. • Don't overschedule your day, sleep in! Don't forget you are on vacation. Give yourself a bit of time to wander neighbourhoods and areas you haven't visited often and take in the sights. • Get out of your home environment. Stay at a local hotel to treat yourself and make use of amenities like the swimming pool or fitness centre. • Challenge yourself to try something new. You can take home many exciting memories from a staycation trip.
