Five hours sleep a night has same effect on brain as being drunk, says Oxford professor By Laura Donnelly, The Telegraph People who boast about getting by on less than five hours sleep should be stigmatized like smokers because of the harm that tiredness can cause, a leading professor has said. Prof Russell Foster, a neuroscientist from the University of Oxford, said lack of sleep was damaging the health of the nation, with too many early risers trying to function with brain skills so impaired they could be drunk. Studies have suggested that lack of sleep raises stress, which could lead to higher blood pressure and increased stroke risk. There certainly is a culture of, ‘well I only had five hours of sleep last night, how fantastic am I?’?” he said. “In fact, we should be looking down on those sort of things; in the same way that we frown upon smoking, I think we should start to frown upon not taking our sleep seriously Prof Foster called for a change in attitudes towards getting an early night. “There certainly is a culture of, ‘well I only had five hours of sleep last night, how fantastic am I?’?” he said. “In fact, we should be looking down on those sort of things; in the same way that we frown upon smoking, I think we should start to frown upon not taking our sleep seriously.” The neuroscientist raised concern that sleep deprivation could cause risks

four hours a night as prime minister. “Look at banking, look at the recent decisions about the Greek crisis. We see major discussions going through the night which have a massive impact, and decisions are being made when skills are very impaired.” Margaret Thatcher slept for only four hours a night as prime minister, as did Winston Churchill during the Second World War — although he insisted on a two-hour nap in the afternoon.

Prof Foster said many of those who rise before dawn were unaware of just how badly it could affect the functioning of their brain. “At four o’clock in the morning our ability to process information is similar to the amount of alcohol that would make us legally drunk, as bad as if we had a few whiskies or beers,” he said. In 2010, a University of Warwick study found that people who slept for less than six hours each night were 12 per cent more likely to die before the age of 65 than those who slept six to eight hours. Prof Foster said the evidence about the increased health risks posed by night shifts was also compelling. Studies have suggested that working night shifts speeds up the ageing process and is linked to increasing risks of cancer, heart disease and type two diabetes.

BC Coroners Service confirms presence of fentanyl in deceased couple BURNABY - The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the presence of fentanyl in a North Vancouver couple whose deaths were reported to the BC Coroners Service on July 20, 2015. Hardy Robert Leighton, aged 31, and his wife Amelia, aged 30, were found deceased in their North Vancouver home on July 20. Observations at the scene suggested the possible use of illicit drugs. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid which is much more toxic than morphine and is particularly dangerous to those who are naïve opioid users. In some cases users have unwittingly ingested fentanyl believing they had been sold other illicit drugs such as oxycodone. Over the past three years the percentage of drug overdose deaths in which fentanyl is detected has risen to more than 25%. In more than 80% of those cases, the cause of death was a mixed drug overdose, with fentanyl being just one of the components.

Who do you call when you find a bomb? Coquitlam – Earlier this week, local Mounties responded to an unusual report of a found bomb in a home in the 100 block of Logan Street. A contractor hired by the family to work on their late grandfather’s residence found what he believed to be a World War II era bomb loosely sitting in a closet. The contractor immediately exited the home and called 9-1-1. Investigators found out that the home owner’s late grandfather was a retired member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and they believe the bomb may be a training ordnance used by the military. Even a training ordnance usually carries a small but still volatile charge, so members from the Royal Canadian Navy were called in to assist. “When there is imminent danger to human life, the Esquimalt based Fleet (Pacific) Explosives Diving Unit Ordnance Disposal Team stands ready to assist police agencies at short notice. The EOD team is the first responder to deal with any military explosives and is regularly called upon to deal with such

hazards as unearthed or souvenir old munitions, or marine location markers washing up on the beach,” said Lieutenant Paul Pendergast of the Royal Canadian Navy. “Protecting Canadians at home is Canada Command’s top priority and the Canadian Forces stand ready to assist the people of British Columbia.” The technicians from the navy quickly arrived at the residence to secure and seize the ordnance without any incident. “In my 17 years of experience, this

is one of the most unusual calls that I’ve seen. Thankfully, the complainant did the right thing by calling us immediately and that in turn helped us to deal with the situation in a safe and quick manner, without risking the safety of the neighbourhood,” said Corporal Jamie Chung. “If you ever find something like firearms or explosive, always treat them as loaded or live and do not touch or disturb it in any way. Call 9-1-1 for your local police and describe what you found and where you found it.”

Surrey RCMP and Transit Police joint operations for one year Surrey- Over the past seven months, the Surrey RCMP and Metro Vancouver Transit Police (Transit Police) have been working together on a special year-long joint operation to reduce crime and increase public safety around the Surrey Central transit corridor. Since January 6th, 2015, Surrey RCMP Constable Carl Garlinski and Transit Police Constable Ryan Camping have been walking the beat in high traffic areas connected to main transportation hubs in the City Centre area. “Our goal is to deter violence, raise public confidence and perception, reduce calls for service and ensure the livability of Surrey,” says Cst. Garlinski. By providing a high visibility presence, the pair enforces disorder and disruption but also focuses on proactive policing and community engagement. The officers obtain valuable feedback from talking with local businesses, commuters, and patrons in the area and create initiatives to target the issues that are identified. Typically, these involve nuisance and

They have also helped locate 20 missing youths and made over 200 contacts with local businesses. One of these in support of the project is Elizabeth Model, CEO of the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association: “We are very supportive of this partnership which has had a very positive impact on the surrounding business community,” says Model. “Not only has it helped businesses recoup some of their costs related to loss prevention, but it has also helped change the general attitude towards crime and disorder in the area.

Return Kohinoor diamond to India: UK lawmaker Keith Vaz By Prasun Sonwalkar, Former Labour minister Keith Vaz attends a Liberty fringe meeting during the Labour Party Conference at Manchester Central Keith Vaz, the longest serving MP of Asian origin, has called for the Kohinoor diamond to be returned to India during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to London in November. Vaz raised the demand following Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s widelywatched speech at the Oxford Union in which he suggested that Britain should pay reparations for the depredations during British rule in India. A Labour MP, Vaz said in a statement: “I welcome Tharoor’s speech and the endorsement of its message by PM Modi. I share their views. These are genuine grievances which must be addressed”. He added: “Pursuing monetary reparations is complex, time consuming and potentially fruitless, but there is no excuse for not returning precious items such as the Kohinoor diamond, a campaign I have backed for many years.” Vaz said: “PM Modi is due to arrive in the UK in November and Prime Minister Cameron has gone out of his way to maintain a strong bilateral relationship. What a wonderful moment it would be, if when PM Modi finishes his visit, he returns to India with the promise of the diamond’s return.” Kohinoor is considered to be one of the oldest and most famous diamonds in the world, with a long history. There have been demands for its return to India, most recently in 2013 when Cameron visited India. However, he had rejected suggestions for the return of the giant diamond presented to Queen Victoria in 1850.

Nepal temple bans animal sacrifice New York: A temple in Nepal that conducts mass slaughter of animals every five year at a festival has banned animal sacrifice, said Humane Society International. According to the New York Times, millions of pilgrims from India and Nepal attend the festival at the Gadhimai temple that lies about 90 miles south of Kathmandu. About 500,000 buffaloes, goats, chickens and other animals were killed at the temple in 2009, according to the humane Society. Campaigners said that those numbers dropped in 2014 after India’s Supreme Court banned taking animals across the border to Nepal for sacrifice there, campaigners said. (ANI)

His second mercy plea before President Pranab Mukherjee was rejected late last night. Indian-American to represent Washington in US pageant WASHINGTON: Indian-American Priya Gopal-Walker, a survivor of child abuse, will represent Washington in the 2015 Miss Teen USA Pageant to be held in Bahamas. Gopal-Walker, 17, will compete with contestants from all over from the US at the pageant on August 21-22. She made her entry to the pageant after winning the Miss Washington Teen USA crown, India West portal reported. Gopal-Walker, who is of half Indian and half American heritage, is a student at the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Seattle. She was to compete in 2012, but had to pull out of the competition as she was facing physical and emotional

Guest Editorial Suicide statistics tragically deceptive

A hint of this truth, and of the questions that must be asked, can be seen in the otherwise dry numbers of this week’s report. What does it tell us that men are at least twice as likely to take their own lives as women? What does it tell us of this scourge that it is more prevalent in areas with high concentrations of aboriginal populations? Reports about suicide can seem to be just about other people, and about relatively small numbers of individuals.

Last week, Edmonton Journal newspaper published a story about the likely underestimating of suicide rates across Canada. Researchers in Montreal calculate the true rate may be as

Thousands of kids sidelined as Surrey soccer club gets red carded METRO VANCOUVER -- One of B.C.’s largest youth soccer clubs, the Surrey-based Central City Breakers, has been suspended from play pending an investigation into charges against the organization’s management team, who are alleged to have broken several of the organization’s bylaws and even indirectly diverted funds to another club. The suspension was handed down last Friday by the South District Girls’ Soccer Association (SDGSA), the authority that oversees the Breakers’ female players, following a series of complaints against the club, including the improper use of club funds to support the Canadian Eagles, a club that the complaint says is not affiliated with the district or B.C. Soccer. The suspension means the club cannot register any female players or participate in any B.C. Soccer-sanctioned events. Surrey Metro Soccer, which oversees the boys who play for the Breakers, has also been notified of the allegations and was expected to issue a statement outlining its position on the case Monday evening, according to a source close to the matter. An estimated 2,800 boys and girls play for Central City Breakers teams. Details of the allegations are contained in a four-page letter sent to the SDGSA earlier this month by Amar Bains, a member of the Breakers and the former vice-president in charge of equipment. In the letter, Bains claims the club violated four of its own bylaws around with whom the club can be affiliated, timing of the

annual general meeting and conflicts of interest. Surrey Breakers Correspondence Specific attention was paid to the alleged support the Central City Breakers have been providing to the Canadians Eagles FC. In his letter, Bains claims the two clubs share seven board members and that “monies have been paid” from the Breakers to the Eagles, a violation of club bylaws. Bains further alleged that: — Breakers membership fees are being used to pay for field rentals for the Eagles; — The shared board members are using the Breakers membership date to expand the Eagles membership; — Breakers management is “making payments” to the Eagles in “direct violation” of the club’s constitution and bylaws.” “I am asking that both the South District Girls Soccer Association ... and the Surrey Metro Soccer Association (SMSA) hold account the CCFC (The Central City Football Club, same as Central City Breakers) for its abuse of

power,” Bains wrote. “If there is no action taken by the districts and B.C. Soccer within a reasonable time, this serious matter will be put forth to the Supreme Court of Canada.” Bruce McCallum, chair of the girls soccer association, declined to comment on the matter when contacted by The Province, other than to confirm an investigation has been launched into the allegation, which the organization’s website characterized as “grievous.” While suspended, the club can’t register any female players or participate in any B.C. Soccer-sanctioned events. Efforts to contact the club Monday were not successful, but a statement posted on its website late Monday said the club has asked the district for specific details of the allegations, as well as a justification for “imposing discipline on the club without first providing details of these apparent complaints or an opportunity to address the allegations.” “The club believe the district has acted unfairly in this matter and intends to pursue the issue with B.C. Soccer,” the statement read. “The Club is also considering other avenues of recourse to attempt to rectify this egregious conduct by the district.” Peter Lonergan, marketing and communications officer with the B.C. Soccer Association, said his organization is monitoring the situation and gathering information. “These things are always concerning,” he said. “In terms of kids playing, we do our best working with both the district and the clubs to get those kids playing as soon as possible.” BY CASSIDY OLIVIER, THE PROVINCE

The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. B.C. serves up new options for liquor producers VANCOUVER - Most customers at a distillery lounge are visiting for the spirits - however, thanks to the latest government liquor update, they will now also have the option to order a beer, cider or glass of wine, if they prefer. Previously, a winery could only sell glasses of vino it produced onsite, and a brewery could only let you buy a glass of its local beer. This would sometimes mean that some visitors would choose to not purchase anything, if they'd rather have a cider or a mixed drink, for example. No longer is this the case. Starting today, distilleries, wineries, cideries and breweries with licensed lounges or special event areas can sell liquor they don't produce, for customers to enjoy during their visit. By making this change, it also means that, in many cases, customers throwing a wedding or other event at one of these locations won't have to apply for a separate Special Occasion Licence to reap these benefits either - one less thing to worry about when planning the big day. This latest change, made as a result of feedback heard during the Liquor Policy Review, will cut red tape for B.C. liquor manufacturers and help them further support and promote their allies in the industry, while offering a new, value-added service for their visitors. Over the next few months,

government will continue consulting with liquor manufacturers about these on-site tasting options and the process for getting a liquor licence, to find areas where further red tape can be cut.

the Liquor Policy Review. Today is a great example of the work we are doing to open up the market to create more choice and convenience for consumers - while also creating more opportunities for B.C.'s burgeoning liquor industry to reach its full potential," said John Yap, Parliamentary Secretary for Liquor Policy Reform. "These changes mean there are more opportunities for B.C.'s artisan spirit, wine and beer producers to showcase and sell their products to local residents and visitors, and compete with products from around the world. The growing demand for craft B.C. beverages highlights the consumer demand for local foods and creates new markets and customers for B.C. growers and value-added producers, a key goal in our Agrifoods Strategy to grow B.C.'s agrifoods sector into a $14 billion a year industry by 2017," says Norm Letnick, Minister of Agriculture. "This is a perfect way to allow craft B.C. distilleries, wineries, cideries and breweries to showcase one another, in an effort to cross-promote and support the local B.C. industry. Our distillers have been asked on a daily basis why we can't serve craft

"How many British Columbians have been on a cidery tour and wanted to buy a glass of B.C. wine at one of their stops and been turned away? How many people have held a wedding at a winery and been forced to apply and pay for a special occasion licence because they knew some of their guests would want to have a beer or a mixed drink? Well, as of today, these issues are a thing of the past, says Suzanne Anton, Minister of Justice. "We are doing away with B.C.'s archaic liquor rules. Today's change will both create more selection for consumers, and support B.C. tourism, small businesses and our many incredible liquor producers." "Our government is making small changes with big impacts, as we update our liquor policies based on the feedback I received from industry and British Columbians during

B.C. beer and wine in our lounges - and now we will be able to share the good news with our customers that they have that option," said Tyler Dyck, president, Craft Distillers Guild of BC. Miles Prodan, president and CEO, BC Wine Institute said, "This is a w e l c o m e d enhancement to the B.C. wine industry, both from am business perspective and also for our customers' convenience. While we know many of our visitors are exploring our world-class wineries to experience B.C. wine, it's also nice to be able to offer consumers the option of a mixed drink or a beer." Quick Facts: * In order to ensure the focus remains on the manufacturer's own unique products, sales of other liquor will be capped - only 20% of their sales each quarter can be from alcohol produced off-site. * As of July 28, 2015, government has implemented 35 recommendations from the Liquor Policy Review. * Government has adopted a phased-in approach to modernizing B.C.'s liquor laws, and will continue consulting with stakeholders and reviewing the changes made, in order to ensure that there are no unintended consequences.

Kalam was a person loved by everyone he came in contact New Delhi, (ANI) It was my good fortune as a communicator in the Government of India to have come into contact with A.P. J. Abdul Kalam, who passed away in Shillong yesterday. In 1982, I was the Director of Public Relations in the Ministry of Defence, when R. Venkatraman was the Defence Minister. During one of his visits to defence establishments, I had accompanied the Defence Minister to Hyderabad . The Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister V.S. Arunachalam was keen that the Defence Minister should visit the laboratory which was developing the Integrated Guided Missile Programme. The Defence Minister and Dr. Arunachalam were taken round the laboratory by A.P. J. Abdul Kalam. He was a witness to the experiments of the launching vehicle, which made a deafening sound. We were all asked to cover our ears when the 'missile' was fired. The Defence Minister asked Dr. Arunachalam, whether it did not create a disturbance in the neighbourhood. I recall , Dr. Arunachalam told him that it

was not a frequent occurrence, and that Dr. Kalam had excellent rapport with the people around. Later, I came to know that the Defence Minister got the Cabinet to sanction a sum of Rs. 388 crores for the missile project. That was the period

when the Agni and Prithvi missiles were being developed. Later, when the missile was successfully launched, I had the opportunity of meeting Abdul Kalam at a reception organised by Dr. Arunachalam at his residence. After my superannuation, I served

in the Defence Ministry as a media advisor to Defence Minister George Fernandes. By that time A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had successfully completed his tenure as the head of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and continued to have an advisory role to the Government of India. He was also associated with the Pokhran II nuclear test in 1998. I recall that in June 2002 , when I was having an informal discussion in the office of A.S. Dulat ', who was an Advisor on Kashmir to the Prime Minister, I received a call from Defence Minster George Fernandes. He asked me to come quickly and help him prepare a biographical note to be presented at a meeting called by the Prime Minister, for the selection of the Presidential candidate in place of K. R. Narayanan. He said he wanted to suggest the name of A.P. J. Abdul Kalam for the post. Abdul Kalam won the election decisively and I had the opportunity of witnessing the swearing in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. That he was loved by every one with whom he came into contact, was evident to me during my visit to the Poorna Prajna School in Vasant Kunj here. I happened to be a member of the Board of Directors of the school, and it was a pleasure to watch his interaction with the children and inaugurate an ''exhibition' of water colour paintings. I have the Kannada version of his autobiography "Wings of Fire", translated by Jayaprakash, a former officer of the DRDO and the story of missile development in the country authored by his associate scientist Sivathanu Pillai. Mr. I. Ramamohan Rao is a former Principal Information Officer to the Government of India. He can be reached on his e-mail: raoramamohan@hotmail.com. (ANI)

Lady Gaga gives surprise piano performance during U2’s concert

Washington: Lady Gaga recently made a surprise appearance during U2’s concert, and played piano on their hit track ‘Ordinary love’ at the Madison Square Garden. According to Entertainment Weekly, the ‘Bad Romance’ singer, who wore black outfit teamed up with a pair of bizarre high heels and a blonde wig, tightly hugged band member Bono before her piano act. She also sang some of the track’s lyrics with other band members. The news broke when U2 shared their picture with the pop-singer on Instagram with caption “All hail Her Gaganess”. (ANI)

Emma Thompson says ‘sexism’ in showbiz ‘at worse’ for women London: Hollywood actress Emma Thompson believes that ‘sexism’ in acting business is worse than ever. The 56-year-old Oscar-winner has joined other female stars including Maggie Gyllenhaal and Helen Mirren in criticising sexism in showbiz and said that the world was in a worse state since she had known it to be, particularly for women, the Guardian reported. Thompson expressed her feelings by saying when she was younger she used to think that they were on way to a better world and when she looked at it now, it

had deteriorated and she finds it very disturbing and sad. Giving example of James Bond films, she said that everyone has seen the films and as the lead got “more and more geriatric, his girlfriends got younger and younger. It’s so annoying.” It was all a complete shit, she added. She hence talks to as many young female performers as she can and their conversations focus on how nothing had changed, and that some forms of sexism and unpleasantness to women had become more entrenched and prevalent.

also the film’s director, said that she took the role wildly comic and she couldn’t resist, but added that it would have been nice if someone that age played the part. (ANI)

Cosby denies drugging, sexually assaulting women without consent in new docs

Washington DC: Bill Cosby attorneys have filed new documents in court, which deny the claims that the actor drugged and had sex with women without their consent. In the documents, his lawyers claim that Cosby admitting to give Quaaludes to a woman he was in a consensual sexual relationship with in the 1970s didn’t mean he gave other women the drugs “without their knowledge or consent” or “engaged in any nonconsensual sex.” Cosby’s attorney Patrick O’Connor wrote in the motion, “Quaaludes were a highly popular recreational drug in the 1970s, labeled in slang as ‘disco biscuits’ and known for their capacity to increase sexual arousal,” People magazine reported. He continued writing that there were numerous stories of celebrities in the 1970s willingly using Quaaludes for recreational purposes and during consensual sex, however, when the excerpts unsealed, media immediately pounced, inaccurately labeling the released testimony as defendant’s “confession” of “drugging” women and assaulting them.” The motion comes as a response to the excerpts from the deposition that were unsealed at the request of the Associated Press and one filed by attorney Dolores Troiani, who represents former Temple employee Andrea Constand, with whom Cosby settled a lawsuit in 2006. Though the settlement had confidentiality agreement, Troiani asked the judge to release Cosby’s deposition transcripts and Constand and Troiania from those confidentiality provisions which “defendant has chosen to ignore.” O’Connor is against unsealing of the deposition and/or allowing it to be distributed to more members of the media. Kylie Jenner graduates from high school

Reality TV personality Kylie Jenner was more than excited to announce her graduation from high school. The 17-year-old star took to microblogging website Twitter on Tuesday to share the good news with her fans, though she never posted anything about her school life on social media earlier, reports aceshowbiz.com "I finished school last week...I know I never post on social media when I'm in class but that doesn't mean I don't encourage education! Because I do," she wrote. A source said that Kylie continued her education after ninth grade in a home school program to earn her high school diploma. In May, Kylie also defended herself against negative rumours about her education. In reply to a fan's question about whether she would finish her school, she wrote: "I do school every weekday :) again don't believe everything you read." Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift in Twitter spat Rapper Nicki Minaj and singer Taylor Swift were caught in a feud on micro-blogging website Twitter. Minaj was upset because her "Anaconda" visual is not featured in the Video of the Year category of the MTV Video Music Awards. After the full nominees were announced on Tuesday, Minaj took to Twitter to express her disappointment, and somehow ended up having a Twitter spat with one of the coveted award's nominees, Swift., reports aceshowbiz.com. "If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year," Minaj tweeted. Swift, one of only two female artists nominated for the award, felt attacked by Minaj's remark. "I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot," the "Blank space" singer responded. Seemingly confused by Swift's comment, the "Anaconda" hitmaker

wrote back: "Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. But u should speak on this... I'm still confused as to why u just tweeted me when I made it abundantly clear..." Both Minaj and Swift later attempted to end the online argument. The former then made it clear that she didn't mean to offend anyone when she ranted about the snub. "Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs?

White media and their tactics. So sad. That's what they want," she said. As for Swift, she wanted Minaj to perform with her should she win the Video of the Year Award. "If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on," she wrote. Despite the Video of the Year snub, Minaj's "Anaconda" is still up for multiple awards at the VMAs, which this year is held on August 30.

George, Amal still ‘mad about each other’ Actor George Clooney and wife Amal Clooney are still "mad about each other" and seeing them together is like "watching a rom-com", according to their friend Kathy Lette. The 54-year-old actor and the 37year-old British human rights lawyer got married in Italy last September. Lette isn't surprised that the Oscar winner proposed to the brunette beauty in April 2014 after just seven months of dating, reports people.com.

"She's drop-dead gorgeous, your jaw hits the ground, but she's also very charming, funny, self-deprecating. She's as warm and down-to-earth as ever," Lette said. Lette, who is the author of "Courting Trouble", has loosely based his new novel on Amal. She said: "It's about a woman in her 30s in the legal world trying to change the world and make it a better place." By Santa Banta News Network

Sparks flying in your love-life, or scoresettling with your bank manager, creditors or colleagues? Luck clearly won't be on your side at the beginning of the month (on the 3rd (Mar. (Mar.2121- April April 19) and 4th). Unless it's you that quite simply has a problem restraining your desires or complying with the boundaries you are set! This won't be the time for strutting around, but more for accepting your responsibilities and doing all you can to save face, your relationship or your bank account! The situation will sort itself out from the 13th, when you will double your efforts to have your talents recognised. Things will still be difficult on the family front and even the presence of Venus in the sector devoted to your relations with those close to you will only succeed in exacerbating the palpable tension, especially at the beginning of the month, when some couples (especially those born after 17th May) could go through a great crisis and in some cases, end up on the rocks! From 23rd (Apr. 20- may 20) August, the Sun will take it upon himself to warm up the atmosphere, inviting you to express your feelings, rather than risk feeling frustrated around the 21st, when financial worries will catch up with you and then stand in the way of your efforts! A month devoted to communication, but where the message really won't get through around 3rd August, and your excesses and absences will come in for criticism from your family in particular! Don't try to turn it into an argument, but instead, fill in the potential gaps by getting moving to prove to (May 21-June 21) those who matter that you love them and are ready to devote time to them! In addition, Jupiter is going to move into the area of your chart devoted to your clan and will encourage you to shed light on shadowy areas, bring harmony to exchanges with others. You will be very determined in August to show off your talents, exploit and develop your potential, obtaining the recognition you deserve! However, you won't win your case at the beginning of the month, when your requests for money will be refused and your hopes and expectations in your love-life will ( June 22-July 22) be frustrated (at least until the 5th)! On the 11th, Jupiter will get involved to boost your communication and connect you with the world through new contacts and why not as groundwork for discovery and exploration!

Dear SOS Dear SOS: My husband and I met in high school before my 15th birthday. He had always been a poor student and preferred getting and making money over learning. He dropped out of school after grade 10. We dated for two years and then I got pregnant. I was always an honor roll student and planned on becoming a doctor but with the baby coming I had to change my plans. By the time I was eighteen I was married with one child. We got our own place, life was hard but still we had some good times. Then we had another child. Our relationship was great -until we had children to care for. I stayed home to look after the children while my husband went to work and then he got laid off. Then he was working on and off. Things got physical not long after our second child arrived. We'd argue and I'd try to leave, only to result in

The situation will sort itself out from the 13th, when you will double your efforts to have your talents recognised.

It will again be those born in the third decan that will take the rap (on 3rd August) and have to draw a line underneath the past, but it won't be painless! You will feel as if someone is trying to clip your wings and keep you in a state of dependency (emotionally and financially), which you will find alienating. (Nov22 22--Dec. Dec 21) (Nov. 21 Don't go along with it! As for the end of the month, it will plunge you back (on the 21st) into a state of melancholy, which will be difficult to deal with and put behind you! Resist this, while you wait to be able to throw off your shackles without too much damage.

A month when you would do well to take a step back regarding the past few months and the progress you have achieved, in addition to the measures you need to take to optimise your recent performance and get the new term off to a flying start. From the 8th, you are going to play host to Jupiter, who will boost your sign until the end of summer 2016. (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22) This will be an opportunity for you to initiate a new phase of development, starting up new enterprises and spreading your wings. Try to defuse any conspiracies by opening up debate and above all keeping it open!

Your eyes will be turned towards the future, but you may have to accept that you will need patience to finalise what is dear to your heart and will probably need finetuning and improving, if you are to last the course in the long term or even find a new (Sept. Jupiter has been giving your plans a boost since summer 2014 and will invite you from 11th August to take a step back in order to evaluate your progress, as well as learn the lessons of the past, so you can prepare for your return to the scene as planned in 2016! Work and your social life will be at the centre of your concerns. If you were born at the end of the 3rd decan (after 19th November), Saturn is going to back you into a corner and recommend you make some choices! Some will be led to break with a pattern which has prevented you from being (Oct. 24 Nov. 21) (Oct. 24 - Nov. 21) true to yourself for too long (on the 3rd), even if that means going through a lean period or (temporarily) finding yourself rather isolated! As for those born during the 1st decan, you will be able to count on Jupiter from 11th August to promote your plans and rally support!

When Ranveer Singh surprised Deepika?

If sources are to be believed, Ranveer Singh sprang a surprise on rumoured ladylove Deepika Padukone as he picked her up from the international airport in the wee hours of Monday. Eyewitnesses suggest that the actor landed at the airport with a bouquet and waited for about three hours in his car before it was time for the actress to step out of the arrival gate. Says the source, "Ranveer was watching a movie at a suburban theatre and his film got over around 1 am. After that, he rushed to the airport to pick up Deepika, who was returning from a holiday abroad. The actor had a bunch of pink flowers in hand and appeared happy." Since the actor had reached the airport well in advance, he waited around patiently before Deepika finally arrived at 4 am, adds the source. How to get a designer-inspired home without the designer cost (NC) As you flip through the glossy pages of design magazines, there are countless images of expertly-designed homes that are decorated in a way that seems to flow seamlessly from room to room. This is because designers consider each room in terms of its relation to another and choose colours that work together in harmony. This is especially important given the popularity of open concept homes, though not everyone hires a designer or has a knack for design. In most cases, choosing complementary paint colours can be tricky, so most homeowners end up picking one colour for an entire floor. But if you want to bring your walls to life, consider the following when picking colours for your home: What is the mood you want the space to reflect? Depending on whether you choose warm, neutral or cool colours, you can

options for either an urban or coastal feel.

create a space that helps to set a particular mood. Warm tones create a space that is inviting and gives off a positive energy. Neutrals create a space

that is cozy yet balanced as they complement various looks and stay relevant over time. Cool colours create a space that is relaxing and provide styling

What is your personal sensibility - bold, balanced or subtle? To create a bold space, combine colours in the same family – such as red and pink – but separate them with a clean and crisp neutral. For a balanced space, create a single accent wall featuring a saturated colour and surround it with more neutral tones. In a subtle space, use shades that are similar in tone and intensity. For this kind of room, use accent pieces to keep it on trend and in style. Great design should reflect the homeowner's personality and should be more fun than difficult. HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams has compiled 16designer inspired colour collections to take the guesswork out of picking a cohesive colour palette for any home and style.

Teach college students how to make their money last (NC) One of the biggest challenges students face when they head back to school is managing their money. In fact, an RBC Student Finances Poll reveals that 71% of respondents are worried that their savings will not cover all of their school expenses for the year. “With a full schedule of classes, studying, and exams, students have enough concerns before even considering their finances, says Mandy Mail, director of student banking at RBC Royal Bank. “The best way to ensure that student

Ăˆ

funds last for the entire school year is to create a plan early on, and stick to it all year long.Mandy offers these tips on how to make your money last: • Create a realistic budget – Determine how much money is available from all sources including loans, grants, and part-time and summer jobs. Set aside an amount for fixed costs such as tuition and rent, and establish a monthly budget for other expenses. The key to a successful budget is to make it realistic – if it is too strict it will be harder to stick to it.

• Plan for social spending – Discretionary spending is where many students get into trouble. Set a weekly limit on certain types of spending like eating out, entertainment, and shopping. According to the RBC Student Finances Poll, 42% of students wish that they knew how much all those little extras cost. • Track your purchases – Use your smartphone and find an online budget tool to note purchases and track spending. Review both each month to be sure you are not overspending and make

any necessary adjustments. • Make your spending go further by finding the right credit card. Whether it's a credit card that gives you cashback on everyday purchases or one that allows you to earn and redeem rewards points on for supplies – using the right credit card can help you manage your budget.

'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' has every element to kick-start the Sal-mania It is usually believed that a typical Salman movie is just like a bullet-proof vehicle for which critics' verdicts are just like teeny weeny pebbles thrown at it. And as per prevailing notions about Salman movies, it said that for his cine ventures it hardly matters that what critics say or write about them, because at the end of the day they succeed in doing what they intend to. But that doesn't mean that all the Salman movies are some brainless cine sagas piggy backing on Salman's charisma and get penned by critics. At least Bajrangi Bhaijaan is not. Undoubtedly just like many other Salman movies even Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a cine chronicle circumscribed around the "Being Human" persona of this Dabangg of Bollywood, but this nowhere means that it is all about that only. And that's because this cine yarn starring Salman, Kareena and Nawaz in prominent roles has many such cine condiments, about which it can vouch. But before going in to in depth analysis of this one of the most anticipated movie of the year, let's enlighten you about the premise first. Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a story of a simpleton Hindu lad, Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi aka Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Salman Khan) who is humble peaceful and owns a heart of gold. For this peace loving "Hanuman Bhakt" hunk, even spotting a monkey is like having a rendezvous with his lord. Besides what Pawan own is a loyalty towards RSS a trait inherited from his father.

With frames rolling ahead Pawan has a rendezvous with Rasika (Kareena Kapoor) and after which he moves to Delhi from his small town in UP, to reside with his father's friend's family. Everything keeps on floating like a smooth whiff of wind till the time when Pawan meets a little girl Munni aka Shahida (Harshalli Malhotra) who belongs to the other side of the border (Pakistan). And then begins a new jaunt of Pawan aka Bajrangi Bhaijaan, who designates himself with a responsibility of returning Munni to her family which resides on the other side of the barbwires. So does Pawan succeeds in his mission, or not? To know you have to watch this most awaited cine cantata of the year. Just like any other Salman movie even Bajrangi Bhaijaan has a straight and simple plot, sans any redundant twists

and turns to add to the intricacy of the narration, so kudos for the writer. Besides, another noteworthy (read praise-worthy) element from the writing department of BB which will surely grab your attention is that, unlike many movies of the recent times, which tried to cash upon the virility of secularism. Bajrangi Bhaijaan is not at all preachy. It communicates its noble intent, but by knitting it in realistic rhetoric (so no worries about that unwanted adrenaline rush because of that inflated dialoguebaazi). There are a few sequences which leave a lasting impact, but even while jotting those instances Bajrangi Bhaijaan's story writer V.Vijayendra Prasad has invested so much of care in packaging them that they never look like a tutorial on moral ethics and secularism. Though the premise of Bajrangi Bhaijaan

tenderly touches the issue of conversion, but it superbly interprets and re-presents it in an altogether different manner. Unlike many Bollywood movies which draw that "us and they" line between two religions or communities and inculcate a sense of xenophobia among the people, Bajrangi Bhaijaan talks about the peaceful co-existence of different religions and their unique religious mannerisms. Direction of Kabir is simply spellbinding where up till great extent he has succeeded in keeping things realistic sans any larger than life depiction of the facts or his lead protagonist. Therefore tons of accolades for, Kabir, for handling everything pertaining to Bajrangi Bhaijaan with elan and utmost dexterity. Screenplay of Bajrangi Bhaijaan is good up till great extent and is well complimented by a sharp editing. So many good words doesn't mean that this Salman armored vehicle carrying him is all about positives. Just like any other Bollywood cine flicks even this has a few short-comings like a few over-stretched sequences which unnecessarily adds to the length of the movie. But when it's a noble intent dabbled in the treacle of emotions and served with a superb garnishing then one can conveniently overlook these cine flaws. If we talk about performances then in Bajrangi Bhaijaan Salman's character has looked in total contrast with the kind of personas he has portrayed in past. Santa Banta News Network

Five Fabulous Wedding Registry Upgrades as a built-in thermometer, side burners, shelves or tool hooks.

(NC) Getting ready to say “I do? Of all the tasks in preparation for your big day, one of the most exciting is creating your wedding registry. It's a chance to choose everything for your home. Be sure to add items in a wide price range so guests can decide how much they want to spend, while getting something you and your new spouse really want. Dream big—take this opportunity to ask for premium gifts as well.

Unconventional Tools

Multi-Taskers Pots and pans are a registry staple, but don't forget specialty cookware and bakeware, such as a roasting pan, rectangular baker or covered baking dish. Choosing oven-to-table pieces makes it easy to go straight from cooking to presentation, all in one dish.

Mixing Up Magic A high-performance blender is a must-have. Choose one that can help with every meal of the day, such as the Vitamix S55. With a smaller footprint than conventional blenders, this powerful machine offers the convenience of four pre-programmed settings and two containers, including a blend-and-go beverage cup. Use it to make breakfast smoothies, salad dressing for lunch, soup for dinner, and dips and drinks for entertaining.

Backyard Barbecues A grill can help set the scene for backyard gatherings. Decide if you prefer gas, which offers easy operation and

clean-up, or charcoal, which many barbecue connoisseurs say provides a

more intense, grilled flavour. Also, think about extra features you may want, such

Once you've got the basics covered, consider out-of-the-box kitchen items. Keep recipes handy by registering for a cutting board that holds a tablet. For easy entertaining, a slate cheese board allows you to label food selections right on the board. Or, pick one with a hidden drawer for knives and storage. If you need advice on what to choose, ask a consultant at your local department store or download online checklists. Creating a wedding registry is often the first step toward building your home as a married couple, so get the right items to make it a happy one.

Switch up your hair colour for summer (NC) With summer's arrival, many women want to refresh their hair colour, banish greys or shift a shade. From permanent to demi-permanent shades, the right product can help women achieve the hair of their dreams. “Every woman wants hair that looks healthy and shiny, but their needs and reasons for colouring are different, says Luis Pacheco, Clairol Consulting Colourist. “In summer, a lot of women think they should go lighter, but brunettes can have a lot of fun, too. According to a recent poll by Research House Inc., Canadian women who colour their hair do so for three main reasons: to cover greys (67%), to

change up their look (34%) and because they like the way it makes their hair feel (15%). No matter what your colouring needs, finding the right product can make all the difference. “Natural Instincts new Crema Keratina hair colour is different from other at-home hair colour thanks to its unique demipermanent, 20 minute system that imparts gorgeous colour and shine to hair through keratin and beeswax, says Pacheco. “Women benefit from grey coverage, a colour boost and hair that feels smooth. Once hair is coloured, keep it

looking its best with a few simple tips: Protect it. Try switching to a colourprotecting shampoo and a conditioning treatment to prevent colour from fading faster than it would normally. Even better, try a dry shampoo to extend the time between washes. Keep it covered. Just like your skin, protecting your hair is essential to avoid damage from the sun and fade of colour. Opt for a chic hat if you plan to spend an extended period of time outdoors to shield your locks from the light.

(NC) Selecting and purchasing a new car is an exciting, empowering experience. Whether it is your first car or a new vehicle to accommodate your growing family, it brings with it many possibilities. At the same time, with so many considerations to think about, it can involve some tough decisions. “There's a lot more to buying a new car then selecting a vehicle and driving it off the lot, says Ryan Michel, senior vice president and chief risk officer at Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. Michel suggests you do the following even before you leave home: 1. Do your research. Make sure the model you're considering doesn't have a bad crash-test rating. 2. Determine how you're going to pay for it. Look at your budget to see if leasing or financing might be right for you. 3. Compare prices online to be confident you're getting the best possible deal. Think about the accessories you want and find out which dealers offer competitive packages (and don't be afraid to barter). 4. Speak to your insurance agent to learn the cost of your premiums for each model you're considering. Once armed with this information, get behind the wheel and test drive each vehicle before you make your final decision.Lastly, before signing on the dotted line, check with the Insurance Bureau of Canada's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) database to verify the vehicle's history. If the car is priced lower than anticipated, this could be a warning sign.

Planning the ultimate family road trip (NC) A family road trip can be an exciting, educational and memorable summertime experience. From Victoria to St. John's, Canada has countless roadside attractions to visit, places to set up camp and sights to see. While road trips can be a lot of fun, not planning in advance could have consequences. “Mapping out a road trip in detail can help make it an unforgettable adventure,” says Ryan Michel, senior vice president and chief risk officer at Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. “Finding out halfway through your trip that you've forgotten essential supplies can put a damper on the experience.” The first consideration is your route. Think about the attractions you may want to visit and confirm that each

place will be open when you plan to stop by. Plan a schedule that includes how

long it will destination.

Consider the types of weather you're likely to encounter and pack accordingly. Also ensure you've packed other essentials like any prescription medication that might be needed while you're on your trip. Before heading out on any trip, ensure your vehicle is up to the task. Michel offers the following tips to help you prepare: 1. Book an appointment with your mechanic a few weeks prior to your departure to confirm everything is in proper working order. 2. Check or top up your vehicle's fluids (including oil and washer fluid). 3. Ensure your tires have been inspected and filled to the correct pressure. 4. Check that you have a spare tire and jack in the vehicle and learn how to change a tire in case of a flat. 5. If planning to travel outside of Canada, verify with your insurance provider that your coverage extends into all locations you plan to visit. “Depending on your route or destination, it's best to check your insurance coverage before you hit the road,” says Michel. “Keep a copy of your most up-to-date documentation in your glove box so it's accessible in case of the unexpected.” For more tips to help you make the most of your time on the road, visit the Allstate Canada's Good Hands blog at goodhandsadvice.ca.

(NC) Arranging childcare is not a task to be done in a hurry. If you have questions, make sure all of them are answered to your satisfaction. The first one: Who will be caring for and educating my child? Increasingly, parents are seeking trained, accountable professionals when searching for child care. The College of Early Childhood Educators (CECE), Ontario's self-regulatory body for early childhood educators, offers a public register – available online at www.college-ece.ca/publicregister – which allows verification of the registration status of the more than 54,000 registered early childhood educators (RECEs) in the province. RECEs are required to be present under the Day Nurseries Act in many licensed child care settings. These skilled professionals are specifically trained and qualified to take care of children in numerous different educational and social settings. They are dedicated to the wellbeing and development of young children, and they are accountable to ethical and professional standards. In Ontario, all practising early childhood educators are required to register with the CECE. The CECE is not an educational institution or a professional association that advocates for early childhood educators. It is an organization that works in the interest of the public, of children, and of families. It sets registration requirements and ethical and professional standards for ECEs, and ensures member compliance through a complaints and discipline process.
