lawyer, Bob Richardson, agreed that the evidence supported the Crown’s theory that Litt never left the house that morning and was killed after she got home from work on Feb. 4. Her purse, keys, wallet, coat, hat and gloves were all found in the house. But Richardson, and Skinder Punia’s lawyer Peter Copeland, argued there was no reliable evidence that Mandeep Punia killed Poonam. They noted the only evidence heard by jurors during the lengthy trial came from Mandeep’s father, Kulwant Litt, 67, who began telling people in 2012 that his daughter stabbed Poonam in the neck with a box cutter during an argument about a pre-marital relationship Mandeep had. On the witness stand, he told jurors he made up the “story” and that nothing had happened to Poonam inside the

Poonam Litt house the night the Crown says she was killed. Crown Kelly Slate told jurors in her closing address that Kulwant Litt’s “story” was far too detailed to be a lie fabricated only so he could convince his son that Poonam was dead and the elder Litt could re-marry, and to re-claim his place as the head of the household.

The psychiatrist's report has been filed in court, but Barry would not reveal its contents when addressing the media on Wednesday, saying only that it "wouldn't be proper" given that he's no longer Bisesar's lawyer. "It's always difficult… when you have a — and I'm speaking generally — mental illness with somebody accused of serious allegations and so that's something that a lot of times we're illequipped to deal with," Barry told reporters. Last month, Barry said the assessment would help determine whether Bisesar is fit to stand trial. She missed a court appearance on April 13 because she had been hospitalized. Bisesar remains in custody at the Vanier Centre for Women in Milton. Her next court appearance has not been scheduled.

Canada 'does not and will not' pay ransom to terrorists, Trudeau says •

By Canadian Press - BC Local News

KANANASKIS, Alta. — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is making it clear that Canada "does not and will not" pay ransom to terrorists. Trudeau is responding to more questions about the death of Canadian John Ridsdel, who was killed Monday by Abu Sayyaf militants in the Philippines after more than six months of captivity. The prime minister says ransom payments are a key source of funding for terrorist groups like Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim insurgent group. He says they also endanger the lives of the millions of Canadians who live, work and travel in various parts of the globe.

Nonetheless, the question of whether governments acquiesce to the demands of terror groups is likely to remain an open one. An al-Qaida

involved a prisoner swap and multimillion-dollar payment. A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable from February 2010 lent credence to the notion Canada makes payments, quoting Washington's then-ambassador to Mali as saying "it is difficult to level criticism on countries like Mali and Burkina Faso for facilitating negotiations when the countries that pay ransom, like Austria and Canada, are given a pass." Journalist Amanda Lindhout, a native of Red Deer, Alta., and Australian photographer Nigel Brennan were seized by young gunmen near strife-torn Mogadishu, Somalia, in August 2008. Both were released in November 2009 after their families paid a ransom.

Fowler, the highest-ranking United Nations official in the African country, and his colleague Louis Guay, were kidnapped and held for four months before being released. The news agency did not indicate who provided the $1 million for Fowler and Guay. In a published memoir, Fowler said he did not know if a ransom was paid. FORT MCMURRAY, ALTA.—Alberta declared a state of emergency as it took sad stock Wednesday of the devastation from wildfires that torched entire neighbourhoods and forced more than 80,000 to flee the oilsands city of Fort McMurray. Fire crews, backed by helicopters and air tankers, braced for renewed incursions from waves of flame menacing the city. "The situation in Fort McMurray is not stable. It is unstable," Scott Long of Alberta Emergency Management told reporters in a Wednesday afternoon briefing. "The downtown core is being held through some Herculean efforts of the structural firefighters in the area." Premier Rachel Notley said about 1,600 buildings, most of them homes, were hit by the fire that leapt over crews late Tuesday afternoon and raced into the city. “There’s been fairly significant destruction of residences,” said

Notley. She and her officials admitted the outlook remained grim as the fire, which obliterated neighbourhoods to the south and west, moved north. Notley flew up to survey the situation firsthand, while officials in the evacuation centre had to bolt to the south of the city as flames edged closer. (Terry Reith / THE CANADIAN PRESS)

Realtors warned after sex attack -By Kevin Diakiw Surrey North Delta Leader Realtors are being warned after a man attacked a woman during a property showing on the weekend. At about 4:10 p.m., Saturday, a realtor was sexually assaulted in North Surrey while she was holding an open house. The woman was able to fight off the unknown attacker. The man then fled. The suspect is described as an East Indian man in his late 20s to mid-40s, 5'5" to 5'8", with brown eyes and a dark well-groomed beard. He was wearing dark-coloured pants and a lightcoloured shirt at the time. He had a white turban on and spoke with an accent. Surrey RCMP Sgt. Alana Dunlop couldn't say whether the attacker was injured by the woman's defensive moves, or whether evidence was left at the scene, noting the investigation is still in the early stages. The female realtor was not physically injured, but police are assuming she's emotionally shaken by the attack. It's not the first time something like this has happened in B.C. – or Surrey. In October 2007, another female real estate agent was showing a property in Surrey to two men she thought were prospective buyers. She was tied up and robbed before she was able to free herself and run to a nearby home for help. Then in 2008, Lindsay Buziak died from multiple stab wounds in a home she was showing in Victoria.

President-elect of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB), GopalSahota, said the most recent occurrence in Surrey was "very unfortunate." He said what happened is a rare occurrence and that there hasn't been a report of an attack on a realtor while at work in the region since 2007. He said the FVREB knows little about the weekend assault, adding the RCMP hasn't contact the organization yet. The FVREB doesn't know who was attacked. "Other realtors are talking about it," Sahota said, noting the "conversations need to be had when something does happen." He notes when incidents do occur, they typically involve females, but he warned both men and women need to exercise caution when showing homes. The FVREB recommends using a buddy system wherever possible, he said. Sahota emphasized, however, that the majority of the public is wellbehaved. "The criminal element, when

they're going to act on their criminal leanings, it's really unfortunate," Sahota said. The FVREB is offering safety tips for realtors and is hosting a self-defence course next month. It will be held on May 24 at the FVREB offices near 104 Avenue and 154 Street. The course is for members only and will cost $40. Register through the learning centre at https://tlc.fvreb.bc.ca/index.php/login Dunlop said the advice from police is the same they would offer anyone in a similar situation. "You have to consider that when you're advertising something publicly, the public can access it, and that can be anybody," Dunlop said Monday. "The way you guard your safety in the public, you have to apply those principles in those (semi-private) situations as well." In general, the public should always be aware if they see something suspicious. "Be aware of your surroundings," Dunlop said. "Just because you are in a home, it doesn't mean you need to put your guard down." She noted there's no evidence the realtor on the weekend was less than cautious, but said it's always good to "really have your personal safety in mind." Anyone with information about the attack, or anyone who saw anything unusual in the neighbourhood on Saturday afternoon, is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or www.solvecrime.ca

BC study finds psychedelic drugs may help curb domestic violence BY TIFFANY CRAWFORD, VANCOUVER SUN Psychedelic drugs such acid, ecstasy and magic mushrooms have been making a resurgence as a medicine to treat a range of illnesses from post traumatic stress disorder to end of life anxiety. Now researchers at the University of B.C. say the drugs may help curb domestic violence committed by men with substance abuse problems. The UBC Okanagan study, published last week in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, found that 42 per cent of U.S. adult male inmates who did not take psychedelic drugs were arrested within six years for domestic battery after their release, compared to a rate of 27 per cent for those who had taken drugs such as LSD, psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and MDMA (ecstasy.) The observational study followed 302 inmates, between the ages of 17 and 40, for an average of six years after they were released. All those observed were serving sentences of one year or less at a county jail in Illinois, and all had histories of substance use disorders, according to the study. Seventy-two per cent of all participants had prior charges for violent crimes. The participants were interviewed during incarceration about their past hallucinogen use. Of those who had experimented with hallucinogenic drugs,

Sudoku Solutions for last Issue

most of them (87 per cent) had tried more than one of the more well-known psychedelic drugs such as magic mushrooms, LSD and MDMA. Following release from jail, researchers used a U.S. law enforcement database to monitor arrests for domestic violence. The researchers were unable to account for violence that was not reported to police. One of the researchers Zach Walsh, the co-director for UBC Okanagan’s Centre for the Advancement of Psychological Science and Law, says overall the study speaks to the public health potential of psychedelic medicine in contrast to prevailing attitudes that these drugs are harmful.

“As existing treatments for intimate partner violence are insufficient, we need to take new perspectives such as this seriously,” he said. Walsh said with proper dosage, set, and setting, scientists might see “even more profound effects.” Since most of the participants who had tried psychedelics, had tried more than one type, the team did not extrapolate which drug they believed to be having the most impact on reducing violence. It does note, however, that there is evidence to suggest that MDMA may foster intimacy and improve communication, which may lead to less violence against family members.

12 year-old girl accidentally runs upstate New York half-marathon THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A 12-year-old western New York girl wound up running 10 extra miles after she got into the wrong road race. LeeAdianez Rodriguez had registered for the 5K race that was part of last Sunday’s Rochester Regional Health Flower City Challenge. She thought she was arriving late at the starting line when the race started, so she began running with the rest of the runners.

It turned out she was actually running with the halfmarathoners on the 13.1-mile course and not in the 5K, or 3.1 miles. Rodriguez says she realized about halfway through that she was in the wrong race but decided to finish. She completed the half-marathon in 2:43:31.

Review It's a bit surprising to see a director like Garry Marshall, who has a resume that dates way back to the 60s, now immerse himself in this kind of confection (literally, for the number of doughnuts, desserts and M&M candy references you'll see in this movie), which strives to make you sentimental about your mother, with an overloaded cast of characters, for two hours. First, the good bits. Julia Roberts still has it. She's still got the kind of smile that can brighten up a room and warm the coldest of hearts. And when we do see her on screen, she owns it. Incidentally, if you're a diehard Pretty Woman fan, you might notice a line in the film, where Roberts' best-known movie is referenced. Elizondo (who plays Lance Wallace, a celebrity manager) who also co-starred with Roberts in Pretty Woman makes a pointed reference to that flick with a comment about dinner table etiquette regarding salad forks. Elsewhere, Sudeikis provides for the majority of the humour quotient. And then, the not-so-good bits; it's a tad unfortunate to see Aniston hamming it up to the high heavens, doing what she has been doing in rom-coms since, well, forever. Then there's a standup British comedian who is Miranda's daughter Kristin's partner, and they have a baby. They both want to get married but Kristin is

Mother’s Day

confused about her identity. Sounds confusing? You bet it is, and needlessly so. Blame the poor editing for not stitching together a film that has several parallel - albeit, pretty simple - stories but no coherent flow

that holds it all together. All said and done, the two strongest points of this film would basically be Julia Roberts and a bit of slapstick humour. -The Times of India

Khloe Kardashian shares her love for nieces

WashingtonD.C., (ANI): Seems like Khloe Kardashian is quite fond of kids, especially her sisters' tiny tots. On April 26, the 31-year-old reality star posted a photo on Instagram of herself and niece North West in a blackand-white shot sharing a sweet smooch and sporting matching braids, reports People magazine. The snap, taken by Kendall Jenner, was captioned, “My Northie. Thank you sister for capturing this moment @kendalljenner.” Earlier this month, the ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ star posted a photo of herself, Kim’s daughter North, and Kourtney’s daughter Penelope Disick all rocking braids, and referring to the adorably concerned-looking Penelope as her “mini me.”(ANI)

If she should change her mind then treat her like you would your own mother giving her full respect. Life is too short, you know this better than anyone else. Go ahead marry if you want to. But before that spend some time getting to know that person. Let him interact with your children. And let the children get to know him. If he’s agreeable and if your kids don’t have a problem with it then go live your life. Good Luck.

Is DP avoiding meeting with Ranveer in Paris

Is Credit Card Debt driving you batty?

Dear SOS: I am a 41years-old, Punjabi woman with two small children. My husband and I bought our first house and after sometime his mother moved in with us. Eight months after we moved into our new home my husband passed away in accident. Since his death I have been the sole breadwinner in the family. It’s been three years since his death. My family wants me to remarry. They have introduced me to a very nice man who’s a divorcee. He doesn’t have any kids of his own and he has no problem with my kids. Since meeting him I too have been seriously considering about getting married again. I know my husband would not have an issue with it. I also know if it had been me who had died in the accident his family would expect him to remarry. My mother-in-law has ordered me not to

remarry. She says if I remarry she will not allow me in my house. My parents have told her once I marry she will still live with us as before and that they want me to remarry so that me and my kids will have some security. But my motherin-law refuses to budge. I don’t know what to do. Helpless in Surrey

Let Consolidated Credit Help You: Lower your monthly payments

Dear Helpless in Surrey: Decision to marry or not is solely your decision. If you are O.K. with it and if your children do not have an issue with it then you don’t need to worry. Your mother-in-law should be happy to have a daughter-in-law who cares enough to look after her even after her son is no longer alive. If she had any sense at all she would have given you the same status as a daughter and would do whatever she can to secure your future. You need to ask her if it was you instead of your husband would she refuse to allow him to remarry?

Owing to last minute professional commitments, Deepika Padukone might not be able to romance Ranveer Singh in Paris as planned earlier. A few days ago gossip mills were buzzing with news that Deepika Padukone might wrap up the shoot of her maiden Hollywood film, 'xXx: The Return of Xander Cage' and halt in Paris for a couple of days to meet Ranveer Singh before returning to India. However, we hear that the actress' busy schedule might not let her stick to the plan. Says a source, "Ranveer has a long stint of shoot schedules lined up in Paris for Befikre and there is no way he can cross the Atlantic to be with his lady love.

What to do when an earthquake hits while you're driving

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With repeated warnings for us to be prepared for the next big quake here, have you ever thought about what to do if it hits while you are driving? Would you even recognize what you are feeling? It has been said that driving down a highway during a moderate earthquake can feel like the vehicle is being buffeted by strong wind, but Doug Dahl with the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission says a strong quake feels more like major car troubles. “When the road starts shaking, it’s going to feel like your tires all went flat and your steering is not working anymore,” he tells NEWS 1130. “The best thing to do is pull off to the side of the road, just not near tall buildings or things that can fall down on you.” Dahl also recommends stashing a scaled-down version of a 72-hour emergency kit in your vehicle so you are prepared to deal with what happens after a major earthquake. “You can start even with the bare minimum, because if you start listing off a zillion things people need, they won’t do it. If you have some food, some water and a way to keep warm, you can always ramp it up from there.” He also suggests parents include something to keep children engaged so they don’t become panicked. Once the shaking stops, Dahl says you should stay put and listen to your radio. “If you are in a situation where you don’t need an immediate emergency response, you can consider yourself fortunate. But that also means you will

Eventually, you are going to hear radio reports of what’s damaged and what’s not and you might be able to pick a route to home or a shelter.” If you want to let people know you’re okay, Dahl says you should send a text or email. Text messages and email will queue up and get delivered as capacity becomes available. A text also takes up less bandwidth than a phone call.

Why Varun Dhawan is missing Jacqueline likely be on your own for a bit. You’re probably not going to get through on a

cell phone for a while because networks often go down during major incidents.

Oh No! Anushka has no time to rest

Anushka Sharma is currently shooting for two projects at the same time. Anushka Sharma has started her second production venture 'Phillauri' opposite Daljit Dosanj which is a horror comedy and the actress is said to be playing ghost. However the actress literally running from one set to the other as she is simultaneously shooting for 'Sultan'. A source says, " Anushka has been shooting in Punjab and Delhi. Fortunately some part of 'Sultan' too will be shot at Punjab. So it is going to be a bit better situation for her. For 'Sultan' she has to go through a lot training and it is bit tiring for her. Moreover, soon she is likely to shoot for final schedule of 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' as well. But she is balancing it all and enjoying it too."

Varun Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez seem to have become good friends. While the duo has shot together for their upcoming film, 'Dishoom', also starring John Abraham, Jacqueline has posted a snap with the two heroes and said good bye to them. In response to Jacqueline's goodbye, Varun mentioned that he is missing her and will meet her on another adventure. By Santa Banta News Network

Sexual awareness can be life or death

(NC) Sexual education lays the groundwork for a lifetime of strong personal values and gives students the opportunity to develop meaningful and respectful relationships. While this may be considered basic knowledge to most

attention. This could be because in Uganda, 24 per cent of female teenagers are either pregnant or have already given birth. Which, for Ugandan girls, almost always means becoming part of the same cycle of poverty that trapped their own parents, and grandparents. “Here you see a class of 100 can graduate with only 30,” explains 17-year old Nicholas, one of the workshop attendees. “A lot of this has to do with pregnancy.” Early motherhood also exposes young women to the health risks of early childbirth, and HIV/AIDS. Uganda is home to 2.2 million orphans, nearly half of which have lost one or both parents to the AIDS pandemic. In total, there are nearly 8 million vulnerable children in Uganda today, including the vast majority of the teens attending this

workshop. The workshops facilitators are members of Reach a Hand Uganda, a Kampala-based, youth-run organization that empowers teens to make more informed decisions regarding their health as nearly half the population is under the age of 14. The answers being given today are literally saving lives - lowering the birth rate (which averages at 6 children per woman,) reducing the spread of STIs, and creating discussion in a country where sex education is often taught via 1960s textbooks and well-meaning but uneducated family members. Reach a Hand Uganda's workshop is sponsored by Beautiful World Canada, an organization that enables young African women to change their futures through education. Did you know that a new marriage revokes your will? (NC) A few generations ago, most young people got married before accumulating many assets, and often didn't have wills in place. Today, many people delay marriage and some are married more than once. This means it's becoming more common for a person to get married with an existing will in place. Marriage revokes most wills With one exception (a will made in contemplation of a marriage, and containing special wording), getting married revokes all prior wills made by the new spouses. This means that married couples should, once the honeymoon is over and the confetti swept away, consider having new wills drafted that reflect their new life circumstances.

While many people believe that there is no point making a will unless

Move your auto finance knowledge into overdrive

they have assets to bequeath, a will can also provide important recommendations about the care of children – something that becomes especially important if both spouses die. When arranging for a will, consider what happens to your unconventional assets like social media accounts and consumer incentives (like “travel miles). Wills are crucial for blended families When one of the new spouses

has been married before, addressing estate details becomes especially important, because the parties will want clear instructions in place if assets are to be shared among multiple sets of children. Interestingly, divorce does not revoke a will, though it may invalidate certain provisions. This means that if instead of marrying, the new couple choose to live common-law, any prior wills that were drafted with former partnerships in mind will remain in place. There is no rule preventing partners who are not formally married from providing for each other in their wills. Doing so is prudent, because should one of the partners die “intestate (without a will), statutory provisions – which may not align with the partners' intentions – will govern the division of assets. To ensure that loved ones are properly provided for, new partners should pay a visit to a lawyer. Often, making a will is more affordable and less time-consuming than people believe it to be. Why delay when a will can make your intentions crystal clear?

Try these clever ways to save money on summer energy bills (NC) Forecasts predict a long, hot summer on the Canadian horizon, a welcomed piece of news in our country of four distinct, mostly chilly seasons. In many homes, however, summer weather of that kind leads to cranking up the air conditioning for much longer periods. Reliable cooling assures relief for sleeping and for all activities, but such expensive energy consumption could make the gift of a long, hot summer, too much of a price to pay. Did you know that annually, 25 per cent of all energy consumed in the average Canadian household is for air conditioning? So imagine the costs to be saved if we find effective ways to cut it back. “Yes there are some clever alternatives for keeping rooms cool,” says Sue Rainville from Hunter Douglas, a leading name in window fashions. “Programmable thermostats and ceiling fans will keep dollars in your wallet – and did you know that certain types of engineering today make window treatments do this job as well? In addition to supplying privacy and beautiful décor appeal, some of the more innovative window coverings help to keep interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. Better still, with our newest device and app called PowerView, you can even adjust motorized blinds remotely when you are not home.” Rainville has a few more moneysaving quick tips: • Turn on ceiling fans first with blades moving in a counterclockwise direction for quick disbursement of the hot air. • Use a programmable thermostat

to adjust the household temperature when no occupants are at home. • Turn down the hot water

temperature. It may surprise you to hear that water heating accounts for 18 per cent of the annual household energy

consumed. Advisors tell us if we turn the temperature down 10 degrees (F) we could save 3 to 5 per cent in costs. • Install an on-demand tankless water system. Conventional water tanks waste energy because they are set to keep a large amount of water at a consistent hot temperature when it is not needed. An on-demand system may better serve your needs. • Reduce the amount of solar heat that passes through your windows. Energy-efficient window treatments can help control as much as 50 per cent of the heating and cooling energy that can be lost at the window. Additional window fashion tips like that are available at hunterdouglas.ca

Tips to budget your summer travel plans (NC) With March break and Easter in the rear view mirror, Canadians' attention is now focused on a summer vacation. While vacations are remembered for the time spent with loved ones, a successful vacation starts well before you arrive at your destination. Being able to switch off and engage a vacation mindset and successfully leave stress behind is all about planning and budgeting. One of the biggest disrupters of this vacation mindset is worrying about the financial costs of the trip. Dealing with the low Canadian dollar, getting the best deal on your package and budgeting the trip into your yearly financial plan are concerns that we deal with when planning a vacation. The most important part of budgeting a vacation into your yearly

financial plan is to determine how much money you are comfortable allocating and building the plans out from there. As soon as you establish a figure, you will be able to navigate through the planning process while still feeling in control. Exploring the offers of travel rewards programs is an important way to limit the potential cost of travel and amenities. For example, Aeroplan members now have the ability to book a flight reward cashfree. Members' miles can now cover the cost of taxes, fees, charges and carrier surcharges

associated to their flight reward. This results in additional savings. Removing the flight cost from vacation planning really opens up your budget and helps you feel confident about your plans. For added convenience Aeroplan members are now able to book flights through the Aeroplan app.

4 unexpected upgrades to increase your home's value (NC) With home prices increasingly steadily, now is the time to invest in your home. Whether you're ready to sell now, or want to boost your home's value for the future, there are a few upgrades that can make a big impact. When it comes to renovations, we typically head straight to the bathroom and kitchen. While new shiny faucets and stainless steel appliances give off a striking first impression, there are other unexpected areas that can affect the overall look and feel of your home. 1. Window coverings Lighting can accentuate the positive elements in your home, or highlight the negative ones. Sunlight is warm and welcoming, but without ultraviolet protection, over time it can fade and damage a room's furnishings and décor. Hunter Douglas's line of products offers

ultraviolet protection to help counter the sun's harmful effects. Their Pirouette window shadings are designed with soft, horizontal fabric vanes attached to a single sheer backing. This innovation

allows natural light into your room and it also lets you control the light in an entirely new way. 2. The front door This is the very first impression that

a potential buyer will have of your home. Even if the inside of your home is stunning, a tired front door can set the wrong tone for anyone who walks in. Replacing the front door can provide a fresh new look. Consider whether you need to replace locks, knobs, and other door hardware and ensure that it coordinates with the rest of your home. 3. Outdoor landscaping Even if you aren't planning to sell your home, think for the future with landscaping improvements that will add valuable curb appeal. Planting a tree will not only make your home more visually desirable but it can also help to save energy. Choose a leaf shedding tree that will provide shade from the summer sun, but will let light in during the winter months to maximize solar warmth and light. 4. Home tech Technology is not just for smartphones anymore. Homebuyers are increasingly interested in smart homes with elements that will make their lives easier. The new Hunter Douglas PowerView motorized operating system lets you customize the perfect combination of light, privacy and warming, keeping your home perfectly in sync with the time of day and your mood. The PowerView Pebble Remote allows you to control exactly how light will play throughout your home from the palm of your hand.

(NC) A simple project that will help keep your home cool this summer is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many not adequately enough, especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches (41 cm) of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul Comfortbatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers.
