Mom Malkit kaur facing ‘honour killing’ charge released By Michael Mui, 24 Hours Vancouver Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu, 25 at the time of her 2000 death, is seen in this undated photo with her husband Sukwinder Singh Sidhu. Photo courtesy Justice for Jassi Honour killing victim Jassi Sidhu’s mother has been granted bail by the B.C. Court of Appeal as she awaits the results of a court case that would determine whether she’s extradited to India to face murder charges. Jassi — Malkit Kaur Sidhu’s daughter — was killed in June 2000 as she travelled with her new husband in the Indian state of Punjab. A group attacked the couple, taking Jassi away in a car. Her body was found the next day in a nearby village. The case has since been named an honour killing — Sidhu had come from a relatively well-off family, while her husband was a poor rickshaw driver. Her family, the court had heard,

(Left) Jassi Sidhu and her husband (right) her mom Malkit Kaur did not approve of the marriage. The older Sidhu, 67, and Jassi’s uncle, Surjit Singh Badesha, now face charges in India related to her murder and the attack on her husband, who escaped

that day with severe injuries. Seven others have already been convicted. Sidhu had previously been ordered to be extradited by the federal government, but the B.C. court found India’s

assurances that Sidhu would be safe in an Indian prison “unreasonable in light of the evidence of the prevalence of custodial torture and abuse of prisoners, especially female prisoners. The case was accepted for judicial review in February this year. So far, Sidhu has spent four and a half years in jail — her last bail application, made jointly with Badesha, was rejected in 2012. “Although Ms. Sidhu faces prosecution for one of the most abhorrent of crimes, the public interest favours her release: she has been in custody for 4.5 years and has yet to be tried or convicted of any crime; she is 67 years old with deteriorating health ... bail (is) granted on strict terms including house arrest, wrote Justice Lauri Ann Fenlon in her decision. The court also noted that Badesha may have influenced Sidhu’s actions, due to her gender, and that evidence in the case is stronger against the uncle, who remains in custody.

Poll finds strong support for foreign home tax William and Kate communities and the region as a whole. While 64 per cent would welcome a correction of at least 10 per cent that drops to 42 per cent who would cheer a major crash of 30 per cent or more. By Jeff Nagel - BC Local News A new online poll shows Metro Vancouver residents overwhelmingly approve of the province's new 15 per cent transfer tax on foreign buyers of local homes, but they have doubts about how effective it will be in cooling the white-hot real estate market. The Angus Reid Institute poll found 90 per cent of Metro residents support the new tax, which triggered a rush to complete affected deals ahead of the Aug. 2 effective date. But 71 per cent predicted affected foreign buyers would still find loopholes to dodge the new tax and relatively few said they believe it will be highly effective at bringing down home prices or opening up more housing inventory. And 82 per cent of those surveyed said the provincial government should have intervened in the housing market sooner. That included 77 per cent of those who voted BC Liberal in 2013. More than seven out of 10 respondents described the government's new measures as "a step in the right

direction" but only three per cent say they're enough. The poll underscores what previous surveys have found: housing prices, affordability and real estate are a dominant issue facing the region. Angus Reid officials said two-thirds of Metro residents are dissatisfied with the government's response to the housing crisis, possibly because of its perceived lateness and incompleteness. Respondents were nearly three times as likely to say the high real estate prices were hurting them as helping them. Large majorities said the hot market today is a net negative for their local

proposed. The B.C. government on Thursday passed legislation to create the 15 per cent tax on residential real estate purchases by foreign nationals. For those buyers, it would add $300,000 to the cost of a $2 million home. The most recent data released by the province shows 10 per cent of homes sold in Metro Vancouver were bought by foreign nationals. If that pace continued, the new tax would generate $1.4 billion in revenue for housing initiatives. The province has also legislated an end to self-regulation by the real estate industry, and has enabled a tax on vacant properties by the City of Vancouver

are coming to BC this fall

BY Canadian Press - BC Local News OTTAWA—The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will pay a visit to Canada this fall — their second since getting married five years ago. Prince William and his wife, Kate, will visit British Columbia and Yukon later this year, Gov. Gen. David Johnston announced Wednesday. "Our true Canadian pride and spirit will shine and be at the very heart of this visit so they can feel at home," Johnston said in a statement. It's the royal couple's second visit to Canada. Their first, following the 2011 wedding, took them to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Charlottetown, Summerside, Yellowknife, Calgary and Slave Lake after that community was ravaged by a forest fire. The then-newlyweds drew large crowds wherever they went, including a packed Canada Day gathering on Parliament Hill. The visit was also seen as a way to engage young Canadians with the monarchy, given the perception of waning interest compared to that of older Canadians. In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the visit will present a chance for Canadians of all background to meet with the Duke and Duchess "and learn more about our heritage, traditions, and institutions." The federal government is to release more details of the tour at a later date. There was also no immediate word whether the couple's children, George and Charlotte, would accompany them to Canada.

High-risk offender arrested in Maple Ridge VANCOUVER-William James Brookshaw, 42, has been arrested in Maple Ridge after Vancouver police issued a warning earlier Tuesday about the high-risk offender being unlawfully at large. Police said Brookshaw, whose history includes sexual crimes, was granted statutory release in January. He was living in a Vancouver halfway house and was unlawfully at large after failing to return Monday night. A Canada-wide warrant had been issued for his arrest.

NEWARK, N.J. - An airline passenger was charged with sexually touching a sleeping woman who did not know him aboard a flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Five farm workers injured in Delta crash

GLEN SCHAEFER (Vancouver Sun) Delta police are investigating after five farm workers were injured when the van they were riding in was involved in a crash with a passenger car at Nordel Way and Brooke Road. The workers suffered minor injuries in the crash, and the van operated by farm labour contractor BKS Enterprises had enough seatbelts for its passengers, a police spokesman said. “They are licensed and registered,” Delta police Const. Leisa Schaefer sad Tuesday. Police and paramedics were called to the crash site just after 8 p.m. on Monday. The workers were heading home after work. The van was to be inspected as part of the crash investigation, Schaefer said. WorkSafe B.C. released four inspection reports done on the company’s vehicles in the past year, indicating that the firm had complied with that agency’s orders. Roadside checks are done in partnership with police, as WorkSafe B.C. doesn’t have the authority to pull vehicles over, a spokesman said. B.C. Federation of Labour president Irene Lanzinger said farm-worker safety remains a concern nine years after three women died in the Abbotsford crash of a van that was found to be unsafe. “We don’t know all the details about (the Delta accident), but inspections aren’t happening at the rate they should be happening,” Lanzinger said.

Chinese village names and shames children who don’t take proper care of aging parents

Working in a modern office a death sentence on par with smoking, European study warns LONDON — Office workers must exercise for an hour a day to combat the “deadly” risk of modern working life, a major study has found. Sitting for at least eight hours a day could increase the risk of premature death by up to 60 per cent, the study of more than 1 million adults published in The Lancet found, with sedentary lifestyles now posing as great a threat to public health as smoking and causing more deaths than obesity. Workers who spend several hours each day at their desk should change their routine to include a five-minute break every hour, as well as take exercise at lunchtimes and evenings, the study recommended. An hour of brisk walking or cycling spread over a day was enough to combat the dangers of eight hours sitting in the office, the researchers said. Current public health advice recommends just half this level of activity – yet almost half of women and one third of men fail to achieve even this. Professor Ulf Ekelund, the lead scientist, from Cambridge University and the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences, said: “We found that at least one hour of physical activity per day, for example brisk walking or cycling, eliminates the association between sitting time and death.” He added: “You don’t need to do sport, you don’t need to go to the gym, it’s OK doing some brisk walking maybe in the morning, during your lunchtime, after

05

dinner in the evening. You can split it up over the day but you need to do at least one hour.” Researchers said the typical modern routine of spending a day in front of a computer, followed by an evening slumped in front of the television was proving fatal. They called for radical changes in government policies to encourage healthier habits. These include placing bus stops farther apart to force people to walk for longer, closing streets to cars on weekends to encourage more sports and exercise, and opening free public gyms in parks. Many office workers, especially commuters, would find it hard to avoid long periods of being seated but should make every effort to break up their day, with short walks, the scientists said. “Take a five-minute break every hour, go to the next office, go upstairs to the coffee machine, go to the printer,” said Prof. Ekelund. “Build physical activity in your everyday life.” LAURA DONNELLY, THE TELEGRAPH

A Chinese village is naming and shaming people who do not care for their parents, plastering their pictures on billboards and rolling out plans to broadcast details of their “crimes” on loudspeakers. The village drew up the rules after local elderly people raised concerns that they were not being treated well by their offspring. Caring for parents is considered the most sacred of Chinese virtues, but decades of economic growth have led many of today’s generation to focus more on their careers than caring for parents. Huangfeng village in the southwestern Sichuan province drew up regulations to shame those considered guilty. Filial piety is China’s greatest virtue “Filial piety is China’s greatest virtue,” said Zhang Yiping, local party village secretary. “And Chinese people also hate losing face, so making their bad behaviour public will make them ashamed and persuade them to change their ways.” Zhang said village chiefs “try to talk” with offending children to persuade them to improve. If they continue to treat their parents badly, the village puts their personal details, their photograph and the specifics of what they have done wrong on a public billboard. The village is also preparing to take the campaign for the elderly a stage further next year. “We are planning to shame villagers who don’t fulfil filial duties on loudspeakers from January,” Zhang said. The village leader denied the rules

violated people’s rights to privacy. “The rules were approved at the village committee by our representatives, so it is perfectly legal,” he said. China is one of a handful of countries to have laws that allow the elderly to force their adult children to take care of them. More than 1,000 elderly Chinese people have reportedly gone to court to force offspring to pay assistance costs. In 2013 Beijing took the regulations a stage further by passing a law compelling adults to provide emotional support and visit their ageing parents. The law lists a series of obligations to provide for the “spiritual needs of the elderly”, which include going home “often.” Shanghai, China’s commercial hub, issued regulations earlier this year that children living apart from their parents should “visit or send greetings often” — or face having their credit scores lowered. Observers have criticized such measures as being difficult to enforce, namely because there has never been any legal definition of how many times people are expected to visit their parents. -NEIL CONNOR, THE TELEGRAPH

SFU becomes first Canadian research university to be accredited in U.S. Simon Fraser University just became the first Canadian research university with U.S. accreditation. The announcement came Tuesday that SFU had in recent weeks been granted accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), which is based in Washington state. The NWCCU is an independent, non-profit agency, recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, which oversees accreditation for 162 higher-education institutions. According to SFU, the benefits of accreditation include increasing accountability through external assessments, setting clear benchmarks for assessing educational goals and students’ learning experiences, enhancing the value of an SFU degree, building relationships with U.S. institutions and fostering public confidence. “It’s more of a question of reassuring international partners and potential international students and international alumni that you meet a widely known and accepted standard of quality assurance,” said Dr. Jonathan Driver, provost and vice-president academic at SFU. “It also will be very

Move over red, white wines, here comes the ‘green’ one!

| innovative | independent inclusive cl d

Washington D.C, (ANI): With green foods reigning supreme in recent years, it seems only natural that green drinks should too, but unfortunately, ecowines come with a stigma that they suck. Now, science shows that ecocertified wines are not only good for the environment, but also taste better and are much cheaper. Though consumers remain reluctant to spend more on wine from organic grapes, a research from the University of California - Los Angeles showed that in blind tastetests, professional wine reviewers gave eco-certified wines higher ratings than regular ones. The study looked at reviews and scores for more than 74,000 California wines from the magazines Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator. On a standardized 100-point scale, eco-certified wines scored an

average of 4.1 points higher. "The bottom line is that however we look at it, we find that organic and biodynamic farming has these small but significant positive effects on wine quality," said lead author Magali Delmas. Though the paper studied only California wines, the research team expects the results to apply broadly, since California produces 90 percent of the wine in the United States. The preliminary findings on a study looking

at French wine show similar results, added Delmas. The study looked at eco-certified wines, which included wine made with grapes from organic and biodynamic farms, but did not include a third kind of eco-certified wine: organic wine. Organic wine refers not only to how the grapes were grown but also how the wine was made. Most notably, organic wine cannot contain added sulfites, an important preservative, Delmas said. Delmas believes preservative-free organic wine, which was once known for souring quickly, may be one culprit behind consumers' unwillingness to pay more for any kind of eco-certified wine. But the misperception that all ecocertified wine is worse "is good news for consumers, because they will get higher-quality wine at a lower price," she said. Delmas hopes the research will inspire vintners to show off their ecocertifications more boldly and encourage more wineries to take up environmental practices. The study is published in the Journal of Wine Economics. (ANI)

Now, a skin patch that lets you monitor your booze level Washington, (ANI): Heads up boozers, there’s a new breathalyser in town that is wearable and can measure your alcohol history just from the sweat on your skin. Engineers at the University of California San Diego developed a flexible wearable sensor that can accurately measure a person's blood alcohol level from sweat and transmit the data wirelessly to a laptop, smartphone or other mobile device. The device can be worn on the skin and could be used by doctors and police officers for continuous, non-invasive and real-time monitoring of blood alcohol content. The device consists of a temporary tattoo, which sticks to the skin, induces sweat and electrochemically detects the alcohol level, and a portable flexible electronic circuit board, which is connected to the tattoo by a magnet and can communicate the information to a mobile device via Bluetooth. "Lots of accidents on the road are caused by drunk driving. This technology provides an accurate, convenient and quick way to monitor alcohol consumption to help prevent people from driving while intoxicated," researcher Joseph Wang said. The device could be integrated with a car's alcohol ignition interlocks or friends could use it to check up on each other before handing over the car keys, he added. "When you're out at a party or at a bar, this sensor could send alerts to your phone to let you know how much you've been drinking," said co-first author Jayoung Kim. "What's also innovative about this technology is that the wearer doesn't need to be exercising or sweating already. The user can put on the patch and within a few minutes get a reading that's well correlated to his or her blood alcohol concentration. Such a device hasn't been available until now," researcher Patrick Mercier said. Researchers tested the alcohol sensor on 9 healthy volunteers who wore the tattoo on their arms before and after consuming an alcoholic beverage (either a bottle of beer or glass of red wine). The readouts accurately reflected the wearers' blood alcohol concentrations. The device also gave accurate readouts even after repeated bending and shaking. This shows that the sensor won't be affected by the wearer's movements, researchers said. As a next step, the team is developing a device that could continuously monitor alcohol levels for 24 hours.

‘Inaccurate’ depression tests put kids, teens at misdiagnosis risk Washington D.C, (ANI): Turns out, your kid’s chance of getting misdiagnosed with depression is greater than you think as a recent study has found that screening tools are inaccurate for children and adolescents. In Canada and the U.S., doctors are increasingly being encouraged to try to identify depression in children and adolescents, even if they do not have obvious indications of the disease. In order to do so, the physicians often use short questionnaires that ask about symptoms of depression, but according to the research, there is insufficient evidence to show that any of these questionnaires accurately

screen 6- to 18-year-olds for the disease. The researchers believe that this calls into question the use of these assessment tools for this group and raises worries about possible misdiagnosis of the disease in this age range. "Our study shows that if depression screening were carried out using existing screening tools, many non-depressed children and adolescents would be mistakenly identified as depressed," said senior author Brett Thombs of the McGill University. In order to assess the quality of the screening tools that are currently being used to identify depression in

children or adolescents, the researchers carried out an exhaustive search of the medical evidence looking for studies that put the screening tools to the test. In the end, they were able to identify just 17

studies where the test results from the screening tools were compared with results from a diagnostic interview to determine if the children or adolescents in the study actually had depression. Thombs and colleagues then assessed the methodology and results of these 17 studies. Lead author Michelle Roseman noted, "There was not a single tool with even moderate evidence of sufficient accuracy to effectively identify depressed children and adolescents without also incorrectly picking up many nondepressed children and adolescents." Thombs believes that given the inaccuracy of the tools currently being used, some children could end up mislabeled as depressed. "This could lead to the unnecessary prescription of potentially harmful psychiatric medications and negative messages about the mental health of some children who do not have mental health disorders." Researchers said that to properly assess the accuracy of depression screening tools in children, large, well-designed studies that present results across a range of cut-off scores are needed. The study appears in Canadian Journal of Psychiatry. (ANI)

France introduces sea patrols following terrorist attacks

London, (ANI): A marine police spokesman has said that France has introduced sea patrols for passenger ferries to and from Britain, following the recent string of jihadist attacks in the country. The spokesman added that marine police has been deployed along the French coastline, from the North Sea to the Mediterranean and have been tasked with contributing to efforts that began last year to secure the country’s waters, reports the Guardian. The spokesman said that similar armed patrols would be seen in train stations across France. (ANI) Advertise in

'Madaari'-Powerful and thought provoking 'Madaari' is the moving tale of a distraught common man, a single father Nirmal Kumar (Irrfan) who has lost his son under tragic circumstances, owing to negligence and corruption in the system. How he resorts to a desperate measure to make his voice heard, in a bid to seek justice, forms the crux of the film. Exposing the malaise of deepseated corruption, government apathy and the power of social media in reaching out to people, the film is both, disturbing and hard-hitting. It is a reality check for the electorate and sends out a strong message that the "ideal voter" in India will perhaps no longer tolerate government indifference and demands accountability. Unlike, other political satires, "Madaari" takes the route of a strong emotionally-packed narrative, well-told. And that, is what perhaps pierces your heart, making you connect immediately. You empathise with the father, even not having experienced his predicament. Irrfan, as the anguished father, is brilliant. His eyes, with their vacant expression, convey his pain and frustration, with ease. As an actor, he is in absolute command, reliving the grief effortlessly. His pain is palpable. The last scene where he finally severs physical ties with his son's belongings, is heartwrenching. Vishal Bansal, as the Home Minister's son, Rohan, is a treat to watch. A combination of spontaneity and restraint, the child exudes a maturity as an actor, far beyond his years. Their bond which builds,

gradually, is heart-warming. Equally fun to watch, is their repartee, with startling wise statements made by the child. Tushar Dalvi as the Home Minister, seen after a long hiatus in Hindi films, is competent, but not extraordinary. Jimmy Shergill as Nachiket, the Investigating officer, is once again his usual self. A feeling of deja vu pervades you when you see him on screen -right from his physical persona, to his character. Yet, that does not take away his ability as an actor, in performing sincerely. Ayesha Mishra as the mother, is convincing and delivers what is expected of her. The rest of the actors too, essay their roles effectively and leave an impact, however limited their screen time, especially the actor playing Chiku's father. Directed astutely by Kamat, the film

is compact and never digresses from the core subject. It is engrossing and powerful. The screenplay is taut and the characters well-etched and real. "Masoom sa" rendered powerfully by Sukhwinder Singh is emotionally disturbing. It drives home the message of the father's irreversible loss and captures the mood of the film. The unhurried pace of the narrative, does not seem out of place and in fact gives ample time to let the plight of the father grow. The final face off, although overtly dramatic would incite and appeal to the common man. With a wide range of lenses, cinematographer Avinash Arun brilliantly captures the locales and finer nuances of the performances. Overall, "Madaari" is an absolute treat both for cine-goers and every citizen of India, who is concerned about his country.

Has social media stopped bothering Anushka Sharma? Actress Anushka Sharma, who has been a victim to social media trolls several times, says it doesn't bother her anymore. Anushka has been criticised on social media sometimes for her looks and sometimes over her reported on-off relationship with Test cricket captain Virat Kohli. She has faced it all. She was also once called a "bad omen" for being by her rumoured beau Kohli's side during the ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final in Melbourne. Does she get affected? "If you are chauvinistic mind,

you will not be able to take the fact there is a strong, successful girl... I have been trolled multiple times and it doesn't affect me anymore," Anushka told IANS over phone. The "Band Baaja Baaraat" star, 28, says that trollers who go after actresses just want to feel better by calling them "dumb or stupid". "That probably gives them a satisfaction that makes them feel like they are more intelligent. So, I think it's something that is very sad and which reflects their social upbringing and their personalities,"

she said.

Irrfan Khan in demand? Irrfan Khan has been riding high on the success of Piku and Talvar. The actor has received critical acclaim for his performances in both the movies. His breath taking rendition of both the characters has received rave reviews and has been loved by the audiences. The actor is ready to deliver yet another resonating performance with Madaari. Irrfan is also turning producer with the content oriented film, Madaari, as he was extremely intrigued with the balance the film showcases between being a thriller and an emotional drama. Yes.. you heard that right! Irrfan Khan added yet another feather to his hat as he turned producer with Madaari. Just as the news of Irrfan donning the hat of a Producer spread like wild fire, accomplished and aspiring script writers have been queuing up to meet

the actor. Irrfan proves to be an ideal go to person for script writers as the actor is known not only for his choice of films which have gone ahead and won critical and audience acclaim, but also for backing powerful stories with his acting prowess. The actor has been inundated with script ideas ad full fledged scripts in

Known to be a power house and delivering hard hitting performances backed by strong scripts, Irrfan having dual association in Madaarihas got the audience curious to watch the film. The film is touted by Irrfan as a special project close to his heart due to its emotional and awakening subject. Madaari's trailer and promos have received an overwhelming response while its songs are being loved across. But Anushka, who is currently riding high on the success of her latest release film "Sultan" starring Salman Khan, says she prefers not to respond to trolls. "One cannot respond to these things seriously because it's just a person from who is writing something because one must have had a bad day, is pissed off, had a fight with the girlfriend or maybe got dumped... The easy way to act out is to strike somebody who wouldn't probably answer back to you and wouldn't fall down to you level," she said. The "NH10" star finds it really sad that the trollers usually attack girls "thinking she is a softer target". Recently, filmmaker Vikram Bhatt took it upon himself to slam actor Kamaal R. Dear SOS Dear SOS: My husband and I met in high school before my 15th birthday. He had always been a poor student and preferred getting and making money over learning. He dropped out of school after grade 10. We dated for two years and then I got pregnant. I was always an honor roll student and planned on becoming a doctor but with the baby coming I had to change my plans. By the time I was eighteen I was married with one child. We got our own place, life was hard but still we had some good times. Then we had another child. Our relationship was great -until we had children to care for. I stayed home to look after the children while my husband went to work and then he got laid off. Then he was working on and off. Things got physical not long after our second child arrived. Dear Need Answers in Abbotsford: It could be a slap on the face; it could also be a broken jaw or more broken bones; the possibilities are endless. Although your husband "wasn't violent toward the children," by failing to control his rage he exposed them to violence. Nowhere did you mention that he has any desire to change. Because your children know no different, they could think daddy's behavior is normal. It is urgent that they learn it is not normal, and it's your job to teach your children that lesson by example. You are making positive strides in the right direction. My advice is to keep marching forward and don't look back.

Aamir Khan going extra miles for making Dangal a hit Because he is practice-perfect Khan, Aamir is spending free hours rapping before he takes the mic for his next 'Dangal' His next film may be an intense drama about wrestling, but Aamir Khan wants to have fun. The star, who wrapped up the shoot of Nitesh Tiwari's 'Dangal' recently, is now prepping up to sing a special track in the project. It won't be just another song, though Aamir will turn rapper for this one. Says a source working on the project, "Aamir is excited about doing a rap number. It is a peppy track that will be used in promotions. After recording it, he will shoot for the video." Aamir made his singing debut with the cult tapori song, 'Aati Kya Khandala', in 'Ghulam' (1998), with co-star Rani Mukerji humming a few lines. He

recited shayari in 'Sarfarosh' (1999) and 'Fanaa' (2006). The last time he lent his voice to a song was nine years ago, for 'Bum Bum Bole' in 'Taare Zameen Par', along with Shaan. "But in this one, Aamir's is the only voice. Pritam has composed the song while Amitabh Bhattacharya is behind the lyrics," informs the source, adding, "When the makers broached the idea, Aamir was excited and gave it a thumbsup. However, he wanted to rehearse before stepping into the recording studio." Aamir has been prepping for the song at his residence over the last couple of weeks. "Pritam and Amitabh are part of his practice sessions. Mr Perfectionist wants the track to be nothing short of perfect and is enjoying trying his hand at rapping," the source

says. Aamir Khan's spokesperson confirmed the story. Look out for Aamir's dual musical treat in Dangal Aamir Khan's fan's are in for a treat! The actor will be singing a full fledged song in his upcoming film Dangal! He will not only be singing but also rapping! It has been composed by Pritam which will be a peppy track with the actor's voice with lyrics that has been given by Amitabh. Pritam has also composed the music for the film.

The Dangal actor has infact even trained into singing continuously for 2 weeks. Aamir has been rehearsing for the song everyday along with Amitabh Bhattacharya and Pritam to make sure that the track is well done and there is no stone left unturned. In the past, we have heard Aamir sing two lines in his popular films like Sarfarosh, Ghulam and the most recent Fanaa. Now the actor will be singing an entire song for Dangal. The poster of the film has already gathered tremendous feedback from all quarters. Aamir's look in the poster was one of the highest talking points amongst his fans and audience. -By Santa Banta News Network

'Great Grand Masti'-Adult humour overload Movie Review: These dialogues in the film are inane, and so is the film. But then, that is what "Great Grand Masti" is all about. A silly, frivolous film. Constructed on the familiar template of the "Masti" series, "Great Grand Masti" is shades better than its previous edition, "Grand Masti" which released in September 2013. What makes this adult comedy notches better, is the fact that it is a much more tolerable film than its prequel. Wrapped in horror tropes, this edition once again deals with the three sex-starved friends; Meet (Vivek Oberoi), Amar Saxena (Riteish Deshmukh) and Prem (Aftab Shivdasani). Their sexapades form the crux of the tale. The narrative begins with their predicament of what leads them to being sex-starved. The trio then make their

way to Dhudhwari, a remote village, where they dream of a village full of buxom women. The village also happens to house Amar's ancestral haveli, which he plans to sell. When they land in the village, they exclaim, "Let's milk this opportunity guys!"

But they are warned by the village headman, Ramse (Sudesh Lehri) that the palatial house that they plan to visit, is haunted. Not heeding his advice, the three friends enter the house and meet the legendary nymphomaniac spirit Ragini aka Sabri (Urvashi Rautela), who haunts it. How the trio get out of the spirit's clutches is what keeps you hooked. Tushar Hiranandani's story is simple and uncomplicated. The plot is predictably formulaic, but it is the situations along with the inane yet perky dialogues by Madhur Sharma that make the film endurable. The dialogues packed with innuendoes, double entendres and rhymes are poetry to the ears, except that these lines are profusely loaded with adult humour, that's neither crass nor profound. On the performance front, the trio

of Vivek, Riteish and Aftab, excel with their impeccable comic timing. They are consistently brilliant with their act. But the issue is, that this being their third edition, there is nothing extra-ordinarily different that they offer. Their traits are uninteresting and predictably boring. Their wives essayed by Mishti, Pooja Bose and Shraddha Das, are as insignificant as their characters. Urvashi Rautela with two songs and a welletched character has her on screen moments to shine. Sanjay Mishra as Antakshri Baba, the conman who uses film songs to convey his messages to his devotees and Usha Nadkarni as Amar's mother-in-law are trite and wasted. Sreyas Talpade in a cameo as the gigolo in a cowboy gear contributes nothing by way of performance. On the technical front, the film is radiantly mounted with good production values. The camera work is standard that is expected from a good production house. The unwarranted animation used in the flashback scene is poorly executed. The songs; "Where are you, mujhe tayar karke?" and "I wanna tera ishq, ishq" are racy and typically buoyant. They mesh well into the tale, but they do not add any extra flavour to the narrative. Overall, as Ragini mentions, "Masti ka maza, zabardasti mein nahi na" but the film at times does go overboard, especially during the climax. -By Santa Banta News Network

The surprising person helping your child develop positive relationships (NC) Every parent wants the best for their child. This means giving them every tool to succeed in life, school and relationships. And while we usually think of teachers as helping kids in the school and book-learning departments, did you know that educators also play a key role in supporting children's internal capacity to self-regulate their behaviour and engage in positive interactions with other children and adults? Developing caring and nurturing relationships that support children's learning is one of the core competencies that early childhood educators bring to early learning programs in Ontario. The College of Early Childhood Educators, which regulates Ontario's early childhood educators, recently released a guideline

to help its members support positive

interactions with children. “The college's new practice guideline highlights ways registered early childhood educators (RECEs) can better support positive interactions with children, through techniques like forming positive perspectives and nurturing responsive relationships, says Melanie Dixon, director of professional practice at the college. “Being responsive means working with children to reduce their stress and anticipate moments in their day that might lead to challenging behaviour. The college requires RECEs to remain knowledgeable about current evidence-based research and to transfer that knowledge into practice, and the new guideline directs them to research

Why your kids' educators need to stay current (NC) As research continues to reveal new insights into the minds and learning behaviours of babies and children, parents want peace of mind knowing this new information is applied by the people who work with and teach their kids. And now educators working with Ontario's youngest children will be required to engage in ongoing learning in order to maintain their certificate to practise. In September 2016, the College of Early Childhood Educators is introducing a mandatory continuous professional learning program for the

over 48,000 registered early childhood educators (RECEs) in the province. According to the college, the new program's framework will help RECEs identify areas of their practice where opportunities exist to enhance skills and set learning goals. The framework will allow them to consider a wide variety of learning options, such as post-secondary programs, case study analysis, job shadowing and webinars. “With all the remarkable advances in the science of brain development and how this new knowledge affects our

understanding of learning and development in babies and children, RECEs need to stay on top of the emerging trends in our profession, says Melanie Dixon, director of professional practice at the college. In Ontario, postsecondary education in this field typically includes a combination of theoretical and hands-on experience. Once a student in early childhood education finishes their program, they have to register with the college and maintain their membership through an annual renewal process.

on brain development and selfregulation. It also teaches new ways of dealing with any challenging behaviours requiring more attention. “We used to use the term 'behaviour management' to describe how educators would address challenging behaviours, but now we know that just trying to manage and direct a child's behaviour isn't effective and isn't enough, Dixon reveals. “Another important part of creating positive interactions is the role RECEs play in helping children develop the skills to self-regulate, and the guideline talks about helping them become aware of their emotions, and how to offer them strategies for coping, Dixon adds. We can look forward to further improvements in the care our children receive from early childhood educators this September, when the College implements a mandatory ongoing learning program for RECEs to upgrade their skills. Additional information on the role early childhood educators play in your child's growth and development is available at college-ece.ca.

Add these extra items for road trip success (NC) You are likely a pro at packing for your summer road trips, but here are some useful items that may not have crossed your mind: Disposable camera While most people nowadays use their phones as a primary camera, why not “kick it old school and buy a few disposable cameras? Go back to the days where you enjoyed the moment versus posing for the picture and taking it 10 times until you get the perfect shot. Relish the element of surprise and snap away. Once you return home, host a picture viewing night where you and your friends will showcase all of your developed photos. If you still want to use your phone to document your trip, investing in a selfie stick is a must for road trips. Durable footwear and multi-purpose apparel Chances are your road trip includes camping, hiking, or a lot of walking. To prepare for your adventures, make sure you pack some durable footwear and comfortable clothes, says leading retailer, Mark's. Grab a pair of Merrell Grassbow Air hikers which will help keep your feet comfortable on the nature trails. Additional clothing ideas are at marks.com. Cooler Even if you aren't camping on your trip, be sure to pack a cooler with your favourite road drinks, sandwiches and

snacks. This will help minimize stops and save you money. Mini Pharmacy Kit When hitting the road it's always a good idea to bring a little tote bag which contains items such as motion sickness pills, bandages, mosquito spray and hand sanitizer. You never know what could happen so it's always a good idea to be proactive with a first-aid kit. And more importantly, leave your worries behind as you head out on the road. Create a playlist of old school tunes and some of your new favourites. Buckle up, turn up the music and hit the open road. Happy trails.

Top summer activities to keep kids learning (NC) Just because classes are out, doesn't mean your child's learning has to stop during the warmer months. Use the hot weather for fun new educational opportunities and make the most out of summer learning by having a chat with your child's educator before school lets out. Alana Powell, a registered early childhood educator (RECE) recommends that families talk with their child's instructors about their skills and interests. “The more parents and educators communicate, share observations and ideas, the more successful they will be in supporting the child —we are a team, she says. “If you notice an emerging skill at home, ask your child's educator if they have shown that skill development in child care. If they haven't, that information can help the educator to support that skill in the child care setting. In the same way, the educator may see an interest or skill developing that the child has not shown at home, Powell adds. As a member of the College of Early Childhood Educators, Powell is one of over 48,000 RECEs in Ontario whose professional expertise includes the planning and delivery of play-based, developmentallyappropriate programs for children from birth to age six and beyond. The latest policy work in Ontario underscores the tremendous role families play in the well-being of children, and how important it is for RECEs to work with families to support children's development.

When you're planning activities with your little ones this summer, Powell recommends looking for opportunities to get outside and get messy. .“The key is that the things you choose to do are interesting to your child, play-based and, sometimes, the messier the better. This summer, try one of these activities that Powell says are guaranteed to get your child learning, and both of you having fun. Chill out. “In the hot weather, a great learning experience can involve ice, she suggests. “Freeze paint in ice cube trays and your child can paint outside with melting ice cubes. Low-tech 3D. “Another favourite outdoor activity is painting 3D objects. A toddler will be thrilled to sit inside a cardboard box and draw or paint all over it — while practicing some important fine motor skills, explains Powell. “Your older children will enjoy planning and plotting what to make: is it a house or a race car? Once the box is finished it can lead to great opportunities for pretend play. When they are all done with the box, you can cut up the pieces and make great ramps for driving small cars or rolling marbles.

5 ways to feel like a kid again this summer (NC) Do you remember how much you used to look forward to summer as a kid? We'd look forward to it all year because it meant no homework, not having to wake up early and go to school and getting to play every day at summer camp. It meant getting to be kids. As adults, we may have lost some of that excitement. But just because we have to go to work doesn't mean we can't still experience some of that summer magic. Here are five things you can do during the warmer months to delight in the season and feel young at heart. 1. Do something outdoors. Get active and remember what it's like to be bouncing around outside with energy. Go play with your dog in the park — if you don't have one offer to walk a neighbour's or a friend's dog. Get in a fun workout by playing Frisbee with your kids or nieces and nephews, or by taking a long bike ride and getting lost in your city. As a bonus, you'll get to soak up some vitamin D, something most Canadians don't get enough of. 2. Do something adventurous. What could make you feel more like a kid again than doing something outside your comfort zone? Think about your biggest

fear and conquer it. Afraid of heights? Go skydiving. Terrified of speaking in public? Join a Toastmasters club, which helps members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Adventure means different things to different people — find something brave and daring to do and scratch it off your bucket list. 3. Do something crafty. Summer is the perfect time to get crafty by drawing inspiration from nature in its peak or making something with the natural materials you can now access, like twigs and flowers. Whether it's sitting outside and sketching your surroundings or baking your first ever apple pie from

scratch, impress your friends with something new.

4. Do something good. Part of youthful innocence and wonder is the wholesome desire to help others, without any expectation of getting something in return. Return to this feeling by supporting a charity that works with children and moms—check out the work UNICEF is doing with support from Kiwanis and the Government of Canada to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, a disease that kills one newborn baby every 11 minutes. 5. You've worked hard. Don't feel the need to cram every free minute with fun activities. Sometimes just relaxing with the people you care about is the best way to feel young again.

5 tips for throwing the perfect kids' birthday party (NC) Throwing the perfect, unique kids' birthday party seems to get more difficult every year, with stakes raised by the best party gimmicks going viral through videos, online inspiration boards, and dedicated blogs. Complicating matters is the increasing push to make events that are socially-conscious, environmentally-friendly and that cater to individual dietary restrictions and needs. But hosting a great party that will be the talk of the neighbourhood starts with making sure everyone has fun and feels included. Follow these five tips for a fabulous kids' party that is sure to be remembered: 1. Power down. Even little ones are spending too much time on their tablets. Give them a reason to log off, use their imaginations and play together with creative activities and old-fashioned games. Create your own piñata — it's easy to do with

instructions readily available on the web, and you can customize it to fit your party's theme or make it your kid's current favourite cartoon character. 2. Go green. Opt for reusable plates and cups instead of disposable ones, and make sure to recycle and compost any waste. 3. Ask about dietary restrictions beforehand. Kids can feel excluded when they aren't able to enjoy the same foods as everyone else because of health or allergy reasons. Ask parents to let you know of any dietary needs when they RSVP so you can plan ahead, and look for product lines that accommodate dietary restrictions. Chapman's ice cream and novelty products are a great option, because they offer selected peanut/nut-free, glutenfree, lactose-free, and no sugaradded treats that everyone can safely savour. Look for the symbols. 4. Remember grown-ups want to have fun too. Parents sometimes like to stay and hang out while their kids play, so set up a nearby space for them to chat and catch up with the other parents. Be sure to prep enough food and drinks for parents too — they'll be delighted you thought of them, and will be likely offer you a hand with the clean-up afterwards. 5. Try DIY loot bags. Instead of spending money on loot bags, have the kids make their own memento as a play activity. Kids can search for and decorate rocks with sparkles and washable paint to make a paperweight, or you can bake cupcakes or cookies together for them to take home. If you're hosting really little ones, you can pre-bake the cookies or cupcakes, and have them help out with the decorating.
