9 WINTER TIPS FOR DRIVING ON BLACK ICE

Do you know how to adjust your driving habits when the roads are snowy or icy? In Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, and the rest of these Northern states, snow and ice can be a serious problem in the winter. In fact, according to the American Highway alliance, more than 116,000 injuries take place in the colder winter months every year.

There are a few ways that you can stay safer when you drive on snow or ice. Here are a few helpful safety tips.

1. Slow Down. First off, reduce your speed when you notice that the roads are icy. This one seems obvious, but you would be surprised how many people keep plowing along at their regular speed and think that the ice won’t be an issue. It doesn’t matter what kind of hurry you are in. Slow down so that if you start spinning out, the damage will be reduced.

2. Keep it Steady. Avoid sharp turns, over corrections, and lane changes. Stay in your lane whenever possible. avoid changing lanes or driving on the shoulder where the ice builds up and accumulates. If the conditions

are icy, try to contain your urges to pass and blast past other vehicles. Sometimes, just staying in your own lane can prevent an accident.

3. Know If Things Are Frozen. Double-check the temperature before you leave your house. Your car’s temperature gauges may not always be accurate. Look for ice on your windshield wipers, outside mirrors, or in other places where ice tends to build up. If you notice slick spots, chances are, black ice is lurking on the pavement.

4. Cross Icy Spots with Care. Always stay alert when you go over bridges or overpasses. Driving under overpasses can be equally as dangerous. These areas are hot spots, or, rather, cold spots, for ice build-up.

5. Don’t Tailgate. Always increase the following distances between yourself and other vehicles. You don’t need to be driving on someone’s butt when the roads are icy!

6. Understand Your ABS. Understand how your ABs system works and do not turn on cruise control when the roads are wet or slick. Cruise control prevents your wheels from spinning at certain speeds and can work against your anti-lock braking systems as well. If you do notice your anti-lock braking system kicking in, let it do its thing. Your anti-lock braking system feels like your foot pedal vibrating. Don’t take your foot off, and let the vibrations continue until you can come to a stop.

7. Steer Into a Slide. Learn to steer into a skid. If you start sliding, immediately take your foot off the gas. Do Not Step on the Brake! Turn your wheel in the same direction that the back of your car is sliding. This can help your wheels correct themselves so that you will not lose control of your vehicle when you hit an ice or packed snow patch.

8. Learn to Drive on Ice. Learning to drive when you hit a patch of ice or on slick roads is an essential skill. This is especially true if you live in

Wyoming, North Dakota, or South Dakota. The only way to learn how to drive on Ice is to practice driving on ice. Luckily, up here there are plenty of opportunities for that up here. You should teach your teenagers to drive safely on ice as well. Perhaps, consider taking your kids to do donuts in a parking lot? Or, maybe you can find a quiet open place where you can practice stopping and correcting yourself from sliding on ice. Practice makes perfect. Learning how to steer into a spin can help you prevent losing control of your vehicle when it matters most.

9. Know Who to Call for a Tow. Having the number of a 24-hour towing company can help you if you find yourself in a tough situation after spinning out in the winter. A dependable rowing company with a good garage -
