THE BUZZ

Talk about love and marriage is a favorite pastime for many. From making toasts to giving advice, wedding quotes are insightful but also make us laugh. Here are our favorites:

"For two people in a marriage to live together day after day, is unquestionably the one miracle the Vatican has overlooked." - Bill Cosby

"Love is blind, but marriage restores its sight." - George Lichtenberg

- Anne Taylor Fleming

"I think men who have a pierced ear are better prepared for marriage. They've experienced pain and bought jewelry." - Rita Rudner

&

BUZZPIRATIONS

"A long marriage is two people trying to dance a duet and sing a solo at the same time."

DESTINATION | WEDDING A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE iSSUE/2013

Some 2 in 10 weddings in North America are destination weddings. Antigua and Barbuda's ability to host "same day" weddings, with no residency required for couples to obtain a marriage license, gives the destination a unique and competitive advantage. Destination weddings may make sense for couples whose families and friends are scattered around the country (or even the globe). After all, if most of the guests are going to travel anyway, why not get married in a place that's a vacation for all? Now in its 7th year, the annual Destination Wedding promotion shows how easy it is to coordinate a destination wedding in A & B using local vendors and resources.

Jennifer Stewart and Daniel Duguay received the wedding of their dreams as winners of the 2013 Destination Wedding. The Canadian couple selected as this year's winners of the annual wedding contest, exchanged vows in the presence of friends and family, as well as tourism officials and stakeholders. The wedding was officiated by Mrs. Cleo Percival and photography by Nez and Shelly Chadwick. "Villa Vows" was the theme for the 2013 Destination Wedding promotion that highlights Antigua and Barbuda's diverse assets as a hassle free wedding and honeymoon destination. The promotion is now in its 7th year.

This year's opulent ceremony was held at Villa St. James at Mamora Bay, and highlighted villas as one of many venue options available in Antigua and Barbuda. Villa Weddings allow couples to host their ceremony, reception, rehearsal dinner, honeymoon and family reunion all in the same locale, while offering a higher level of intimacy, exclusivity and flexibility that some couples desire for their celebrations. The event utilized a number of independent resources coordinated by event planner Tracy Guerro of Indigo Events. Among the local sponsors were: Colombian Emeralds, Exotic Floral, Sweet Dreams, Stacey Humphreys of MUAH, Harmonites Steel Orchestra, Chefs 2 U, Island Provisions and Gourmet Basket and Raise the Bar Gourmet Foods. The couple and their guests also experienced a number of adventure tours including the Rainforest Zipline and OnDeck.

A&B WEDDING TRADITIONS

Like many other Caribbean islands, A & B borrows many of its wedding customs from European, African and colonial influences. Those who plan to get married in A & B may want to incorporate some of these elements into their destination wedding to honor local traditions.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE iSSUE/2013

Clothing A wedding is expected to deliver a fashion statement and villagers gather to check out the bride and guests to get fashion inspiration and check out fashion trends. “We going check out the style.

The Flower Garden Decorating the wedding car is an arts and craft project using flowers from the garden, ribbons, crepe paper. Fresh flowers are gathered from the family or a neighbor's garden to decorate the church and fresh petals strewn along the aisle.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE ISSUE/2013

Invitations Only very special guests receive written invitations to the wedding. Through word of mouth fellow villagers can just show up at the church to witness the ceremony.

Wedding Feast It's all the about the feast with a sampling of Caribbean delicacies ; goat water, ham, roast pork, rice and peas and macaroni pie. A little more lavish than a Sunday dinner.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE iSSUE/2013

Wedding Cake The traditional wedding cake is four layered black fruit cake with hard icing. Using a family recipe, preparations for the wedding cake begin several weeks ahead of time when fruits (raisins and cherries) are soaked in rum. The top layer of wedding cake is wrapped in foil paper and frozen with the intent that it will be used when the first born is christened.

Wedding Dress The Bride's dress has an extended shelf life and may be altered and worn at the Christening and the remnants used to make a christening outfit.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE ISSUE/2013

Wedding Speeches Master of ceremonies is a local articulate personality who sets the tone and helps to validate the affair. Speeches are a big part of the reception. "On behalf of my wife and I" is a highly anticipated phrase used by the groom.

Wedding Ceremony At Catholic or Anglican weddings the ceremony may be a full mass including communion.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE iSSUE/2013

First Dance The epitome of romance and love, your first dance at your wedding reception is meaningful for you and your guests. Being the center of attention may be slightly intimidating to some, but the happy memories that you make will be cherished for a lifetime. From traditional waltzes to tantalizing tangos, this old fashioned ritual has been transformed into something that is both heartwarming using local beats like calypso, soca and reggae music.

Wedding Superstitions A coin placed in bride's shoe on the day of the wedding brings wealth and prosperity. On the other hand, if wedding cake crumbs fall on the floor, worst if someone walks on them, this is a sure sign of bad luck.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE ISSUE/2013

10 Reasons to Choose a Villa Wedding

The beauty of most destination weddings is that they're set in romantic getaways. Many couples are opting for a villa ceremony. They want to spend some time with their families and keep the party going long after the ceremony is over, turning a day of celebration into a weeklong reunion of sorts. After all, they're paying to fly in for the wedding -- why not stay and enjoy the local scenery? A & B offers over 150 villas scattered throughout the islands to suit every budget and taste. A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE ISSUE/2013

There is no need to commit to a wedding package when you can create your own: 1. Create the decor and all the small details that will make your day unique and special. 2. Exclusive access to private beach/ pool, especially for those who want to end their wedding with an intimate dip. 3. Service worthy of royalty with butler service and meals prepared by a personal chef. 4. No curfew for those who want a 24-hr reception/party. 5. Sound management is a minor concern. Like the idea of steel band music? Use this as the soundtrack for the first dance.

6. The views are as important as the spouse. 7. Relatively lower costs per person. 8. The perfect family reunion/ honeymoon combination. 9. Multiple locations to host ceremony, reception, toss the bouquet or first dance. 10. Convenience and accessibility to all services including check-in, dining, bar, laundry.

KISSES & PLACES TO STEAL THEM Sunny skies and beautiful beaches create the perfect backdrop for romance. Look out for the A& B episodes of the 'The Bachelorette" on ABC as Desiree's kisses reveal a whole lot about her intentions and how the relationship will evolve. Kissing is one of the universal acts of showing love, especially in the right setting. Knowing the right type of kiss for the occasion can help master the art of the 'instant message' between lovers. Take your camera with you as you create Postcard Memories like Desiree. "A kiss is a lovely trick, designed by nature, to stop words when speech becomes superfluous. ~ Ingrid Bergman

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE ISSUE/2013

1. French Kiss Considered the most erotic kiss among lovers. When performed correctly a French kiss is an art. Interestingly, the French refer to it as an English kiss. Interpretation Center: The ocean and sea vistas are spectacular and couples will have a hard time pulling away from the magnificent views at this iconic hilltop landmark. Enjoy a multimedia presentation designed to take you back in time to far flung events in A & B's history that will uplift your spirits and stir your souls.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE ISSUE/2013

2. Butterfly Kiss This is a kiss where couples get so close that the tips their eyelashes touch. Then they blink very fast as their hearts flutter together like butterfly wings. Fig Tree Drive. Venture into the lush interior and revel in nature and the natural surroundings, like Adam and Eve.

3. Spiderman Kiss Based on the upside down kiss in the 2002 movie Spider-Man, one person's top lip kisses the other's bottom lip and vice versa. This is a playful choice that conveys deliberate affection and a willingness to get the romance cooking. Rainforest Zipline: At varying elevations, this is the perfect setting for adventure and to try something on the wild side.

4. Kiss on the Cheek This closed-mouth kiss against someone's cheek is a friendly greeting, flirty thank-you or cute, unexpected way to say good-bye. An appropriate kiss for a first date, it is similar to a Forehead kiss. Stingray City: Home to these mild but entertaining and gregarious creatures, this setting makes for the perfect underwater romance. Go below the surface for a kiss and don't be afraid to plant a special kiss on your favorite stingray.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE iSSUE/2013

5. Hand Kiss This kiss conveys kindness, respect and adoration. Gently grasp the receiver's hand by the fingers and kiss the back of their hand. In many quarters, public display of affection is strictly prohibited among royals and ranked officers and this is the only kiss allowed. Historically, this kiss was performed with a bow to show deference to a lady. Nelson's Dockyard: Feeling nostalgic or in the mood for some old fashioned romance? This former British naval facility, embellished with artifacts and restored architecture will help transport you to a bygone era to enjoy some old fashioned romance.

6. The Lingering Lip Kiss This is an original closed-mouth classic that lasts longer than 10 seconds. Research claims that three passionate kisses a day (of at least 20 seconds each) leads to better health mentally and physically. So let those kisses linger. Martello Tower: The solitude of this historic landmark on one of Barbuda's deserted beaches will appeal to your sensitive and sentimental nature. A kiss in these environs will strengthen your love and inspire you to live your dreams.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE ISSUE/2013

7. The Sweetest Kiss Partners take a bite out of something sweet, leave a little bit of it on the lips and then kiss each other. This is a unique sensual way to stimulate the taste buds and stir the soul. Cades Bay Pineapple Farm: Home of the famous Antigua Black Pineapple. The taste of this sweet fruit indigenous to the southern side of the island will help heighten emotions and carry you beyond limits.

8. The Peck This is a quick, tight-lipped social kiss delivered on the cheek or lips as an expression of friendship. If you never get past the peck, the potential for love is slim.

A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE ISSUE/2013

9. Earlobe kiss The most impulsive of all kisses, especially for those who want to take a break from lip kisses. In the heat of the romance, one partner may pause to nibble on the other's ear and whisper sweet messages. Devil's Bridge: The natural limestone arch, carved out by the breakers creates the perfect setting. The sprays from the ocean help fan the flame for romance.

10. Kiss & Makeup There are no limits to this kiss that reignites passion and signals a strong reconnection. When in doubt revert to Kisses 1 - 9!

1. Be the Early-Bird.

Make sure you book early as everything is subject to availability, and your preferred date may be taken by someone else.

2. Learn from the scouts; be prepared. Find out what documentation is required for the specified country and the length of time you as a couple need to be there before you can wed. Legal requirements vary worldwide. In Antigua it is extremely easy. We have a no residency policy e.g. you can go to the Legal Office at 9am and be married by 4:30pm the same day. On arrival to the resort you have an appointment to meet with the Wedding Co-coordinator where all final plans are made for your special occasion and the legal forms are filled out for the Registrar and Legal Office.

3. Dress to chill - your wedding attire should be cool and light colored, nobody wants to see the bride and groom sweating down the aisle!

TIPS FROM JOLLY BEACH'S OWN WEDDING PLANNER

BEVERLY KING As an award winning wedding planner who has had plenty of practice; she said she "stopped counting" when she hit a thousand ceremonies, Beverly King, the resident wedding planner at Antigua's Jolly Beach Resort and Spa is source to be trusted when it comes to wedding advice. Here she shares her top ten tips.

4. Don't burn - a strapless wedding dress does not look good with a sunburnt back, and a suit doesn't go particularly well with a lobster red face.

5. Don't forget - who's got the rings? Tie them to something immovable, like the best man.

6. Bless 'em - blessings are available at Jolly Beach. 7. Think twice - always request a copy of the marriage certificate before leaving the resort.

8. Believe! - trust your wedding co-ordinator; she is there to do the thinking for you!

9. Family ties - Jolly Beach has family and friend deals available. 10. Smile! -remember you are saving an average of $25,000 on a US wedding, which leaves plenty of cash for a few extras like flight upgrades and several dozen bottles of champagne! -TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com's annual Real Weddings Study revealed that the average amount spent on a wedding in 2012 was $28,427, with couples dropping more cash than they have in the past four years on all aspects of the event. How much wedding and honeymoon business do you do in A & B each year? Our office as Cianfarani Travel has been in business since 1957 and we have been selling Antigua as one of our top Honeymoon Destinations for a very long time. In fact the Sandals Antigua property has been one of our top Honeymoon Resorts on the island of Antigua since 1994. We also specialize in Destination Weddings and with our new division, InStyle Vacations and InStyle Destination Weddings we are further growing our business into this beautiful and romantic island. We have reached close to $1,000,000.00 in sales for the island of Antigua for the year. We are also working on increasing our business to the island in the following years. What properties? We primarily sell the Luxury Included Sandals Antigua Resort & Spa. The Millionaire Suites are a best seller for Honeymooners. Our other most popular Hotels and Resorts are Carlisle Bay, Hermitage Bay and the Verandah Resort. I've never had any serious concerns or complaints with any of these properties. What are some of A&B's unique selling points for weddings and honeymoons? The first item which comes to mind are the incredible beaches, one for every day of the year. It's wonderful to feel the culture and customs when visiting an island....Antigua has managed to offer some of the world's most renowned hotels and resorts while keeping the authenticity of the island. The travel industry is ever changing and our clients are not only looking for luxury accommodations but also an experience. Also, I was very fortunate to attend a Destination Wedding Event on the island of Antigua which was hosted Celebrity Wedding and Event Planner, Preston Bailey. During this event I was pleasantly surprised to see and experience first hand the level of talent which exists on this small but precious island. Local talent on the island was A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE iSSUE/2013

incredible. Everything from Opera vocalists, flowers, Eco friendly event planners/designers, cakes and cupcakes, and so much more. All of which were right on trend with the wedding market. What are some of the challenges in selling A & B for weddings honeymoons? One challenge which comes to mind are the direct flights. Having more flights throughout the year will definitely assist, especially with the wedding groups. Also, having more flights during the week will also assist with short stay vacations. Who are some of A & B's main competitors for the wedding business? This is a very difficult question. Immediately of course, Barbados and St. Lucia come to mind, however Antigua is a very unique and special island and once I begin to disect the three islands I realize how very different all three islands are. Antigua's main competitors for the wedding business are all of the destinations which specialize in Weddings. Which is why I beleive something more needs to be done to focus on Destination Weddings on the islands of Antigua and Barbuda. How happy are you with the range of accommodations, amenities for weddings? Since I attended the Destination Wedding Event on the island, I know there is very good talent and great companies to work with, however I feel more can be done with these talents to make the transition easier for the Wedding Specialists and Travel Agents which specialize in this market. There are a wide range of accommodations on the island, however the rates may need to be more competitive. As well I would be very interested to see and know more on the luxury villa accommodations offerd on the island.

Jennifer Doncsecz, CTIE CODE NAME "El Presidente" Professional Affiliation President Certified Travel Industry Executive VIP Vacations Inc

CONTACT www.vacationsbyvip.com 610-865-1055 800.678.2274

How much wedding and honeymoon business do you do in A & B each year? VIP Vacations sends $500,000 of business to Antigua/Barbuda every year.

What are some of the challenges in selling A & B for weddings honeymoons? There is only 1 and that is the flight options. The lack of airlift is a big detractor for future groups.

What properties do you typically work with? For our weddings, we have had many large groups at Sandals Antigua and it is also the go to property for many of our honeymoon clientele. However, we have also sent wedding groups to Blue Waters and the Verandah. Many of our honeymooners are also traveling to Hermitage Bay and Jumby Bay as well as Galley Bay.

Who are some of A & B's main competitors for the wedding business? St Lucia would be the #1 destination that competes for this same type of clientele, however it is key to really understand the client and if the BEACH is a priority, then St. Lucia should not even be considered competition.

What are some of A&B's unique selling points for weddings and honeymoons? We find that there is an exotic appeal to Antigua. Having a different beach for every day of the year is also a big win for those clients looking for a gorgeous beach destination. Whenever our clients want an adults only resort that can limit their destination choices however, since there are many in Antigua we can give a lot of options to our clients based on room type, budget and activity level. Because Sandals is less than a half hour from the airport, this is a BIG attraction for our destination wedding groups who have guests only attending the wedding and staying for 3 days. Many destinations require drives that are far longer than an hour from the airport.

How satisfied are you with the range of accommodations, amenities for weddings in A & B? It would be a huge win if Antigua could build or partner with a large "Family" brand resort company to attract more family weddingmoons. Beaches Resorts does a wonderful job appealing to this type of family wedding clientele and adding a Beaches or similar property would be wonderful. If the hotels that are there already that cater to families would market their family activities in a fashion like Beaches does, that would also help VIP sell those resorts for group weddings more easily.

How much wedding and honeymoon business do you do in A & B each year? On average I send 20 honeymoon couples a year to Antigua. What properties? Some of the popular properties are Hermitage Bay, Jumby Bay Galley Bay and Sandals for our honeymooners. What are some of A&B's unique selling points for weddings and honeymoons? Great weather year round and some of the best beaches in the world What are some of the challenges in selling A & B for weddings honeymoons? The biggest challenge in selling Antigua is the air lift. There doesn't seem to be enough service to cover the demand. Who are some of A & B's main competitors for the wedding business? I believe that the some other competitors for wedding business is Mexico, Dominican Republic, St Lucia because its easier to travel there. How satisfied are you with the range of accommodations, amenities for weddings? My clients have been very pleased with their honeymoon vacations.

Question of Last Month

Question of the Month

Please describe any aspects of Caribbean culture that may have influenced your health habits, or inspired you to live a healthier life?

Have you attended or helped to plan a destination wedding in the Caribbean? What were some of the most memorable aspects of this experience? What advice would you give to someone planning a destination wedding?

Answer of the Month Traveling to the Caribbean over the past 20 years my family and I have a lot about herbal medicines used by locals. Many of properties have nature trails where guests can learn more about local plants and sample local produce, many of which are known to contain antioxidants which deliver significant benefits. While in Antigua I discovered the noni fruit that is a super food packed with unique nutrients. I have found many supplements in health food stores that include extracts from noni and I believe that this has improved my health significantly. - Donna Brock, Raleigh, NC A&B BUZZ: ROMANCE iSSUE/2013
