In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed in Paradise and named this isle Santa Maria la Antigua, the miracle-working saint of Seville. Legend has it that the indigenous Arawak people were very friendly and welcomed Columbus and the first European settlers to their shores. This hospitable attitude is still present, and you'll find the residents of A & B to be always friendly and helpful. A&B was recently named among the Caribbean's 10 Friendliest Destinations. With a half a dozen hotels in continuous operation for more than 50 years, you will find that the hospitality is in fact genuine and legendary. There's something about A & B that feels like times gone by, when people treated each other with grace and respect, before the world became too over-developed and incivility was the norm. Today Antigua remains unspoiled, unfettered and ripe for sunny vacations and exploration. Long before there was an established "tourism industry" in A&B, the practice of welcoming strangers to the island was considered a privilege by local residents. Most of the early visitors to the islands were involved in trading goods and any affiliation with these businessmen meant better bargains, access to fine imported goods and an elevated sense of social status among the local people. The inviting climate of A&B and ideal sailing conditions brought bona fide tourists to the region in the early 20th Century and a number of inns, guest houses and hotels A&B BUZZ: LEGENDS ISSUE/2014

emerged. The US Naval base opened in 1947 and A&B was endowed with an international airport, much earlier than some of the other Eastern Caribbean countries. Tourism began to grow with the introduction of regular non-stop international airplane flights in the 1960s. This founded a less exclusive form of tourism, alongside the luxury market, which remains in the present day. Today, more than 1 million tourists, arrive by cruise, yacht or plane to vacation in A&B annually. Tourism is referred to as "the engine of growth"and affects more than 70% of the country's GDP. A&B's service culture is legendary and its 365 beaches, vast unblemished landscapes, friendly people and a variety of resorts each with own appeal, are just some of the unique elements that have kept visitors coming back, since the turn of the 20th century. In our islands Tourism is everybody's business!

Nicholson's Yacht Charter Founder(s): Commander Vernon Nicholson Year Built: 1949 www.yachtvacations.com In 1949, Harry S.Truman was beginning his second term in the White House, "South Pacific" was a success on Broadway, and in the Caribbean Sea, the 70' schooner MOLLIHAWK sailed quietly into English Harbor on the island of Antigua. Commander Vernon Nicholson, O.B.E., Royal Navy, and his family found the old naval dockyard deserted. In those days, only a single plane made weekly stops in Antigua, and it wasn't long before members of the newly established Mill Reef Club were asking to charter the MOLLIHAWK for trips to neighboring islands. And so, in the blue waters of the Caribbean, Nicholson Yacht Charters was born. By 1954, it became apparent that the Nicholson family needed more than just their own boat to accommodate all their charter clients. They succeeded, and soon had a fleet of private yachts under charter out of Antigua.

Steeped in history, many relics of the past have been repurposed to become exciting attractions in A & B. Here are some of the top restorations from a bygone era. Restore a Legend. Preserve the Legacy! A&B BUZZ: LEGENDS ISSUE/2014

Nelson's Dockyard

Shirley Heights

Nelson's Dockyard, named after the victor of the battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Lord Nelson. He was based at English Harbour from 1784 to 1787, as senior captain at only 27 years of age and became the temporary commander-in-chief of the Leeward Islands Enjoy a 30-minute guided tour here and visit the many restored buildings, which now house modern facilities, yet still reflect the naval heritage of English Harbour. This is a place full of history and, although private yachts now replace naval vessels in the harbor, it remains a favorite port for those making the long Atlantic crossing.

Shirley Heights is a restored military lookout, and it's easy to see why they chose this hillside location This rambling array of gun emplacements and military buildings is best known today for the absolutely breathtaking prospect that it offers. From the Heights one can look far out over English Harbour, and on Sunday afternoons the view is accompanied by barbecue, rum punch, and the plangent strains of steel band and reggae music. The site is named for General Shirley, Governor of the Leeward Islands when the area was fortified in the late eighteenth century.

A&B BUZZ: LEGENDS ISSUE/2014

Betty's Hope

The Museum

Betty's Hope was the first large sugar plantation on Antigua, and its success led to the island's rapid development of large-scale sugar production. Although the only surviving structures are two stone sugar mills and the remains of the stillhouse, the site's importance in Antiguan history has prompted the government to begin developing it as an open air museum. About a hundred stone windmill towers dot the Antiguan landscape, and the two restored examples at Betty's Hope provide a dramatic sense of the way these mills must have dominated the island during the hundreds of years that sugar production was the dominant industry. Betty's Hope was built by Sir Christopher Codrington, who came to Antigua in 1674 from Barbados, and was named for his daughter.

The Museum of Antigua & Barbuda was opened in 1985 and is operated by the Historical & Archaeological Society, a private non-profit organisation. The exhibits, which interpret the story of Antigua from its geological birth to political independence, are placed in the old St. John's Court House of 1750, a very historic building. Today, it is indeed a fine setting for an interpretive museum and is an excellent example of adaptive use for the oldest building of the capital city.

A&B BUZZ: LEGENDS ISSUE/2014

The Gift shop at Rex Hawksbill

Redcliffe Quay Shopping Area

A&B boasts the most windmills per capita in the Caribbean and these treasured relics are a reminder of thriving sugar cane industry that helped to develop the country's economy. At Hawksbill hotel, a windmill that likely capitalized on the Tradewinds, has been converted to a quaint gift shop on property.

Overlooking the harbor of St. John's, Historic Redcliffe Quay is one of the oldest parts of the town, dating back as far as the 17th & 18th centuries. In those days it was a busy waterfront docking area, widely regarded as the business and trading centre of the Caribbean. It was the main trading place for Slaves, Rum, Sugar and Coffee between Antigua, Europe and Africa. Today it is a peaceful and shady oasis overlooking the sea and the ideal place to rest from the heat and activity of St. John's. You can watch the yachts and boats coming and going into the harbor, or stand in awe of the huge cruise ships that visit the island frequently in the season.

A&B BUZZ: LEGENDS ISSUE/2014

Russell's at Fort James

St John's Cathedral

Fort James dating back to 1739 has the most spectacular military heritage in Antigua, and still has its full complement of cannons in place. The historic site of the restaurant was rebuilt in 2005 by Russell Hodge, (also responsible for the restoration of the now famous Shirley Heights in 1981) and now offers a fantastic venue for lunch, lazy afternoon drinks, sundowners and dining late into the evening. Fort James is located at the entrance to the harbor of St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda and is one of the many forts built by the British in the 18th century, for fear of French invasion.

Still used as a church, this structure is now in its third incarnation. The present cathedral with its imposing white twin towers was built on a fossilized reef in 1845. Earthquakes in 1683 and in 1745 destroyed the previous structures.

Question of Last Month

Question of the Month

Have you, or a client, ever celebrated Christmas or New Year's in the Caribbean? If so, what were some of the highlights or most compelling aspects of this experience?

Tell us about an interactive A & B experience, where you or your client went back in time to learn about the history, geography, architecture or customs of the destination. This may have been through story telling, walking tour or adventure experience?

Answer of the Month I rang in 2014 at Jolly Beach Resort and the New Year's Eve party was quite a production. The theme of the party was "Call of the Wild" and the organizers did an excellent job creating a jungle experience. There were costume dancers, drummers and a fire eater that really helped to showcase the culture of the island. But they were still able to keep the traditional holidays spirit alive with Christmas carols and fire works. It was very unique and I felt like we had the best of both worlds wrapped in one great celebration. - Vera Cunningham, Stamford CT
