BUZZ PIRATIONS

BUZZ PIRATIONS: Inspiration for today’s valued A&B Travel Specialists We stand our best chance of leaving a legacy to those who want to learn, our children, by standing firm. In matters of style, swing with the stream. But in matters of principle, you need to stand like a rock. - Kevin Costner, Actor You have to know one big thing and stick with it. The leaders who had one very big idea and one very big commitment, this permitted them to create something. Those are the ones who leave a legacy.

- Irving Kristol American columnist, journalist, dubbed the "godfather of neo-conservatism”

We are a continuum. Just as we reach back to our ancestors for our fundamental values, so we, as guardians of that legacy, must reach ahead to our children and their children. And we do so with a sense of sacredness in that reaching. - Paul Tsongas A&B BUZZ – November, 2011

A legacy is something no one can foresee. It’s that inner drive that makes life on earth worth living, and enables people, organizations and nations to grow and hope. More often than not, legacy connotes “home and family.” These days, it seems like everyone wants to get back to their roots and to know their ancestry. As A & B celebrates 30 years of political Independence on November 1, this milestone will be celebrated as part of the annual Homecoming Festival. Most North Americans can relate to this Festival, since Homecoming is the A & B twist on Thanksgiving celebrations. Communities come together to celebrate the “One Family Vision” and there is an island wide celebration of the music and culture and most importantly the food! Our deep respect for the land and its harvest is one of the greatest legacies of our forefathers, who preserved our landscape, and inspired us with a powerful work ethic and a practical outlook to ensure future survival.

The A & B team had the pleasure to be a part of the “We are Family Foundation” 10 year Celebrations. This global organization founded by legendary performer and songwriter Nile Rodgers epitomizes the legacy of family. When Rodgers penned this song for the group Sister Sledge in 1979, life was less demanding and complicated. Today this movement helps us recognize the importance of home and family. Check out our article on Back to the Future to discover that what’s old is new again. In a similar vein Children’s Melee reminds of how effortless and unfussy life was when we tapped into our natural resources and as we say in A & B “made life.” For many us who were around before A & B’s independence in 1981, as we look back on the last 30 years, we recognize that our lives are just a link in a continuous chain of those who served before us. We are expected to replicate these nodes of strength in our community.

Dean Fenton, Kathy Sledge, Nile Rodgers and Derede Samuel-Whitlock

We have dubbed this month as “KNOWvember” a time to really get to know more about the legacy of the tourism industry as well as the heritage and people of A & B. Join us in celebrating 30 wonderful years as an independent nation. Sincerely, Derede Samuel-Whitlock, Director of Tourism, USA Antigua and Barbuda

Get in the Know about A&B During November, there is a thirst for

knowledge of our past with a quiet-butsteady return to our roots and traditions throughout this month that begins with Homecoming and ends with Thanksgiving and the unofficial start of the winter season.. Join us in celebrating the Dreams, Memories and Milestones of A & B’s Heritage.

A&B National Symbols National Flag Designed by Sir Reginald Samuel in 1966, a former art teacher. Symbolism: • The seven point Golden Sun - the dawn of a new era. • Red - lifeblood of slave forefathers; dynamism of the people. • Blue -hope. • Black - the soil and African heritage. • Gold, Blue and White - Antigua and Barbuda's tourist attractions of - sun, sea and sand. • V-shape - Victory at last!

National Sea Creature As distinguished by its narrow pointed beak and often jagged edge on both sides of the shell, the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) was originally perceived as a gift from Caribs, Arawaks and archaic gods. Once actively hunted for its highly valued "tortoise shell," the Hawksbill is now on the endangered list.

National Dress and Day

KNOW

Worn by market vendors and cake makers in Antigua and Barbuda, circa 1834. (This version designed by native Antiguan Heather Doram.) "National Day" is when many Antiguans proudly wear their national clothing, serve or eat local food and drinks, and attend national prayer services.

National Dish Pepperpot was first used by the Amerindians as a means of preserving food. Today it is stew typically containing squash, spinach, eggplant, peas, pumpkin, ochroes, salted meats and dumplings. Fungee is a paste-like ball of cornmeal and okra.

National Bird The Frigate (Fregata magnificens L) is also known as Man-o'-War or Weather bird. Relatives of the pelicans, the male is glossy black.. Frigates have a wing span of eight (8) feet, a deeply forked tail and fly.

National Weed

KNOW: National Anthem The music was written in 1966 by Mr. Walter Chambers, a church pipe organist and piano tuner. The lyrics are by Mr. Novelle Richards, a unionist, poet, journalist and author. At the time of full independence, the words were modified slightly to include Barbuda.

Fair Antigua and Barbuda! We thy sons and daughters, stand Strong and firm in peace or danger, To safeguard our Native Land: We commit ourselves to building A true Nation, brave and free! Ever striving, ever seeking Dwell in love and unity. Click here for the Anthem

http://www.nationalanthems.info/ag.htm

Widdy Widdy (Corchorus siliquosus ) belongs to the Tiliaceae family and used by sugar workers to supplement their food supply during a national strike in 1951.. With little cooking, the weed rapidly softens and becomes sticky. Great flavor and high protein content.

A Legacy of Hospitality Past and Future:

From White Sands to Trade Winds Located on the northern tip of the island,

White Sands Hotel was the pride of the destination. It is said believed that A & B has been involved in the hospitality business since the turn of the 20th century. Located in the heart of the Caribbean, with a natural advantage for sailing, the island became a hub for Portuguese traders as they made their way through the Caribbean. Ken and Maureen Scales, British ex-pats, leased White Sands Hotel from Kathy and Stanley Hawley on their invitation in 1962. Maureen had been employed for several years at Anchorage Hotel as a general assistant to the Owner/Operator, Ronnie Payton. The Scales ran the WSH from 1962 to 1975 and at the time there were four other hotels in Antigua: Lord Nelson, Antigua Beach, The Inn and The Anchorage and Coco Point in Barbuda. The majority of guests of were mainly from Canada and the USA with a few from the UK. A&B BUZZ – November, 2011

The catering for BOAC (now British Airways) was also done on the White Sands property.. Marketing was done through Utell International, reps in the USA and Canada. Otherwise, most of the promotions came through referrals and “word of mouth.” The Scales also did one of the first visits (now called road shows) to Canada with the Tourism Dept, Ms Yvonne Maginley and Antigua Queen Ms. Lucinda Hewlett, to promote Antigua's fledgling tourism product. A short promotional film made for the Canadian market called “Ding a Ding Nook” and covered the story of Governor Warner and his wife who was taken prisoner in A & B. The original White Sands Hotel had 28 rooms which included 8 self contained apartments rented mainly by couples from the US Pan Am base and persons coming to work in Antigua for short periods. The Scales added another 12 rooms bringing it to a total of 40 rooms.

Trade Winds Hotel Meet Cheryl Carter The Scales Legacy continues in A&B and Cheryl Scales-Carter is now the owner and manager of the Trade Winds Hotel. This property also on the northern tip of the island is less than 3 miles from where White Sands Hotel stood. This 50 room resort was recognized on the BUZZ List of the Top 25 Resort Features in A & B as being the “Best Resort Beyond the Shore.” Cheryl naturally brings a wealth of hospitality experience to the resort and we on the BUZZ team believe that hospitality is in the family DNA. Several of her siblings have also worked in the hospitality industry. When asked what makes Trade Winds Hotel so special Cheryl remarked: “The personal touch given by our friendly, efficient and very helpful team, breathtaking views and wonderful food. It is the perfect base for those wishing to explore Antigua with its ideal location. It appeals to business and leisure visitors, since it is close to the beaches, the Airport, St. John's, golf course, numerous restaurants and water sports. CLICK HERE for more information

The Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Cadet Corps

(ABTCC) was reactivated in 2006 after a brief hiatus. With Mrs. Cynthia Simon, a career hospitality leader at the helm, the organization targets students with an interest in a career in hospitality. This elective organization provides on-the-job training and temporary employment opportunities to members, to facilitate the ability to develop first-hand skills and knowledge required in the hospitality industry. Additionally, the program places emphasis on the personal development through the provision of skills training in areas such as leadership, presentation and public speaking, interpersonal and social skills and model behavior. A&B BUZZ – November, 2011

The pilot internship program saw seven Tourism Cadets attached to hotels for a four-week internship. The interns were commended for their strong work ethics, level of professionalism, eagerness to learn, enthusiasm and interest. Tourism Cadets who have completed the internship have obtained employment with high-end properties in A & B, training in Europe, and many pursue careers in the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. Sustainability of the program has had its challenges, particularly financially and via HR support. Initially at the re-launch of the program corporate sponsorship was secured. However, after the recent economic downturn, sponsorship was no longer available.

The following schools: Antigua Girls High School (AGHS), Clare Hall, Christ The King (CKHS) and Ottos Comprehensive have been represented in all of the five years of the program. Training support for the Tourism Cadets via internships with the following properties: Carlisle Bay, Curtain Bluff, Jumby Bay, Blue Waters, Hermitage Hotel, Coconut Beach Club, CocoBay Resort, Galley Bay, Rex Resorts, Trade Winds, Jolly Beach and HBK Villas provide gifts and prizes for top Tourism Cadets and offers support to the program and supplementary activities, such as Careers In Tourism Forum, Creativity in Tourism Project, Junior Minister of Tourism project.

The ABTCC hopes to reach a larger number of students by continuing to instill a spirit of excellence in young people, as they gain an understanding of the Tourism industry and the how the quality of their performance in the workplace will help increase the competitiveness of their country in this era of globalization. ABTCC will continue preparing young people to be stellar professionals and effective Hospitality Leaders while nurturing a sense of ethics and pride in the workplace. jewelry and matching head wrap. The male outfit consists of a madras waistcoat worn with a white shirt with full sleeves and is worn with black pants. A straw hat with a madras band completes the ensemble.

BUZZ: Who are some of the

personalities that have influenced your work or captured your interest or imagination?

Heather Doram Interviewed by Joyce K. Henry, Minisitry of Tourism

Heather Doram, a retired art

teacher and former Director of Culture, designed Antigua and Barbuda’s National dress in 1992. In an island wide contest launched to select a National dress, Doram’s design was the front runner of the 60 designs that were submitted by 23 local designers. She walked away from the contest with top honors for Best Female Design, Best Male Design and Best Overall Design. The National Dress features the madras fabric, a strong cotton textile with colorful red, green, yellow and black plaids, which originated in Madras State in South India and was brought by traders to A & B and the rest of the Caribbean in the 1800s. Based on the post Emancipation era, she shares with the BUZZ her inspiration in A&B BUZZ – November, 2011

creating the design, how she won the contest and the recognition she receives for her work, which will forever be recorded in the archives of her native land Antigua and Barbuda.

BUZZ: Please describe A & B’s

National Dress?

HD: Antigua and Barbuda’s national dress is an expression of our rich culture, history and traditions. The rich colors represent the dynamism of the nationals and the design is based on the traditional attire that was typically worn on special occasions such as weddings and market day. The women’s ensemble features a madras (colorful plaid) dress with a gathered waist and puffed sleeves. A white apron with frills, tucks, large pockets and lace is worn over the dress. It is accessorized with elaborate

HD: My art work has been influenced by the Aboriginal bark paintings in Australia. I have also admired the work of international artists such as: Georgia O’Keefe. Frida Kahlo, Anslem Kiefer, Jane Dunnewald, Erma Martin Yost and Mary Ann Hickey. I admire regional artists such as Leroy Clarke, James Isaiah Boodoo, Earl Etienne ad Mark Brown.

BUZZ: What was your inspiration for the design of A & B’s national dress?

HD: The design was guided by criteria set out in the competition for the selection of the national dress, which stipulated that the dress be based on the post Emancipation era. The criteria used by the judges included: historical guidance, creativity, practicality and appeal.

BUZZ: How long did the design

process take and what type of research did you conduct to come up with the design? HD: The entire process from research to actual construction lasted several weeks. Research was conducted at the local Public Library, the National Archives and

the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. I also interviewed several elderly people in the community. The actual drawings took about one week to complete. It did take some time to source the right materials including fabric, lace, ribbons and other materials for both the male and female designs. I then selected a seamstress and models.

BUZZ: Why is it important for a country to have a national dress?

HD: A national dress is a unique characteristic and representation of a country. The dress or costume can be seen as agent that retains strong elements of the country’s culture yet transcends several generations. It has a sense of symbolism and represents national pride and cultural identity. It is an expression of patriotism and inspires community pride and nation building.

national occasions and elements of the national dress are often integrated into the décor of local wedding themes and other celebrations.

BUZZ: How does this design

fit into modern day culture and how can elements of the national dress be integrated into the tourism product? HD: Many visitors recognize the madras fabric as an authentic aspect of A & B’s culture and we see it being integrated more and more into décor, fashion and souvenirs. During our Independence celebrations, it is integrated into local craft such as buttons, brooches, jewelry, purses, sandals and other types of attire. I encourage all visitors to visit the Craft Market to patronize the local artisans and take a piece of our national dress back home with them. BUZZ

BUZZ: What does A & B’s

National Dress say about the traditions and culture of the people? HD: Antiguans and Barbudans wear the national dress proudly on Heritage Day, during the Independence/Homecoming celebrations as a national symbol of pride. The national dress identifies us as a strong resilient Afro-Caribbean people who triumphed over slavery and a colonial past. It is also worn on special

Q: When considering a destination, what are some of the cultural elements that typically appeal to you? How important is culture in your decision making about travel? Describe your best cultural experience or discovery while on vacation. October’s Reader Question Q: If you could create the ultimate Caribbean vacation what would it entail? Describe activities, experiences, services and amenities (on your wish list) that you would include in your itinerary?

Answer of the Month for October, 2011: When I think of the Caribbean, of course I want to experience the beaches, the sunsets and the music. But what really get's me excited is the food. Almost every restaurant in major cities like New York has a Caribbean option on the menu. The idea is to transport you to Paradise during your dining experience, to whatever place you fantasize about. Whether it is jerk sauce, pineapple salsa, tamarind marinade or a coconut flan, Caribbean cuisine creates excitement. I would love to visit all of the local spots in A & B for breakfast and lunch and then visit some of the more upscale restaurants for dinner. For me it's all about the food. It is one of the basic forms of comfort. Theresa Gordon, Baldwin, NY
