ruise traffic is critical to A & B’s economy and has grown dramatically during the last decade. Success has been largely driven by a collaboration of local stakeholders in marketing the destination and significant investment in pier and other shore side facilities. The destination is considered to be safe and the location of the cruise terminal in the heart of St. John’s lures visitors to get off and check out the myriad of attractions. More than 700,000 visitors arrived in A & B via cruise lines in 2011, representing the lion share of arrivals to the destination, generating more than $860m in economic activity. Cited as one of the most tourism dependent countries in the world, tourism accounts for 85% of A & B’s foreign exchange earnings; generates about 60% of island’s economic wealth; and provides direct employment for 18% of the labor force. In 2003, the Antigua Pier Group Ltd. (APG) dredged the St. John’s Harbour in a US$22 million project that built the new pier at Nevis Street near the historic Redcliffe Quay and extended the Heritage Quay Pier to accommodate the newest and largest cruise vessels sailing the Caribbean today. The main cruise facilities can accommodate four post-panamax vessels in a single day and extra facilities are also available at the Deepwater Bay Commercial Port. A myriad of shore side experiences

A&B BUZZ –March, 2012

A&B’s Cruise Port Facilities strengthens the destination appeal to itinerary planners as well as shipboard guests, so the direct earnings, particularly to local businesses such as boutiques, taxi drivers, souvenir vendors and local tour operators, are significant. Antigua and Barbuda attracts vessels year round and this helps to stimulate the economy when the main winter season for the yachting and landbased arrivals begin to taper off. The large volume of visitors means that the impact of spending is more widely distributed than the traditional landbased or yachting visitors, which is what makes Cruise Tourism so significant to the country’s economy. Cognizant of the success and economic wealth generated by cruise business to date, tourism partners have identified the potential for further growth which they predict will be steady with the addition of more nontraditional European lines, and two years ago a target was set to achieve 1 million cruise passengers by 2012. Across the tourism sector there is a continued focus to enhance the visitor experience. A protocol agreement between the local taxi association and Government agencies has helped to eliminate traffic bottlenecks, ensure safety, leading to a hassle free environment for passengers arriving at the cruise terminals.

• US$22 million spent on cruise infrastructure over the past 5 years

• 2 Finger Piers with 4 cruiseonly berths

• Security booths with high-tech scanning machines, trained security personnel and 24hour CCTV cameras at each pier

• Direct access to duty-free

shopping, restaurants and vendors market

"Cruising has two pleasures. One is to go out in wider waters from a sheltered place. The other is to go into a sheltered place from wider waters."

Howard Bloomfield – Magazine Editor and Author of Sailing to the Sun

"The ocean has always been a salve to my soul...the best thing for a cut or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land."

Jimmy Buffett – Singer songwriter, film producer. Known for his “island escapism lifestyle” music.

Where lies the land, to which the ship would go? Far, far ahead is all, her seamen know. And where, oh where is the land she travels from? Away, far, far behind, is all that they can say. aribbean cruising has been the perennial top international "destination" for many North Americans and many experienced cruisers look to the southern Caribbean for more exotic and less crowded islands, unspoiled beaches, and romantic settings. March is a peak month in Caribbean cruising. With spring break looming, millions of visitors board mega vessels brimming with amenities and creative comforts that steam toward the islands. Some of the newer ships are so spectacular they essentially are destinations unto themselves.

A & B is just one of 7,000 destinations located in the Caribbean Sea. While you can't sail a major cruise ship to every island in the Caribbean, A & B offers exceptional cruise access and facilities that are ranked among the most beautiful and ultra-modern ports in the Caribbean. A & B’s ideal geographic location, in the heart of the Caribbean, facilitates itinerary planners in preparing 7-day or longer trips from many US ports. As you approach Antigua, the twin spires of the St. John’s Cathedral, a centuries old beacon for seafarers, proudly welcomes you. Maximize port time by checking out land and sea attractions beyond the port environs in St. John’s, ranging from snorkeling, duty free shopping, casinos, safari and zip line tours that explore the rainforest and a local style lunch. Check out Beachpedia: Beachcomb for a Year in A & B to find the best beach that matches you/your client’s interests. We also celebrate “Women’s History Month” in the Month of March. We take a closer look at women’s travel preferences, since they are ultimately responsible for making the majority of today’s travel decisions. In fact, more women now cruise together and are taking cruises solo. A & B offers a safe and healthy environment and many ideal experiences. Women are also making significant in-roads in managing A & B’s travel business and will we spotlight six local female business leaders in A & B. This issue is chock-filled with day tours and other ideas on how cruise passengers can explore and experience this twin island paradise. Cool Cruising! Cruise Vacation Packing List from A - Z Everything You Need to Take on Your Cruise Packing for your cruise vacation can be quite daunting, but critical, and a comprehensive packing list is essential. Forgetting key items means that you could compromise your health, and overall experience and pay more on the cruise ship or in a port of call. BUZZ Tips: ● Check out the Packing Pro App to create your personal packing list. ● If traveling with a companion or spouse, divide your checked items into two (or more) suitcases. If one is lost, you will both have some clothing to wear! ● Carry-on anything that you cannot live without for a couple of days, just in case your luggage is lost or delayed.

►Language English is the main language on Antigua and Barbuda, although you will hear many of the locals speaking the local dialect. The further away you go from the port the more likely you’ll hear the local lingo. ►Currency & Best Way to Get Money A & B uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (E.C.), although most of the vendors in town will readily accept U.S. dollars. Current exchange rate is $2.70 E.C. $1 U.S. Bank machines are available across from Heritage Quay at Antigua Commercial Bank (ACB) and Scotia Bank.

A&B BUZZ – March, 2012

►Best Souvenirs Sarah Fuller's Pottery Stand on Redcliffe Quay featuring handmade pottery light sconces.

You'll see them all over the island in homes, hotels and downtown areas. Lights shine through cut-out designs of lizards, fish, seahorses, flowers and other shapes. Small sconces are $37 U.S. ►Best Cocktail Wadadli beer, a light beer made on the island or a rum punch made with Antigua Cavalier Rum, also made locally. Too soon for happy hour? For a cool thirst quencher, try a lime squash, an island specialty made with club soda, fresh lime juice and sugar. ►Best Brunch Check out Napoleon Restaurant in Redcliffe Quay. This quaint outdoor café offers an eclectic mix of local delicacies and continental fare in a historic setting. ►Where You're Docked

You will find

A & B to be a hidden gem, with spectacular beaches, inspiring coral reefs and laid back charm that separates this cruise destination from the hustle and bustle of other Caribbean ports of call.

There are two adjacent main docks at the Heritage Quay or Redcliffe Quay in St. John's, the island's capital city. Shopping, restaurants, bank machines, pharmacy and local transportation are all within a few blocks of the Quays. ►Hanging Around Immediately off the boat, you'll face two indoor/outdoor malls for dutyfree shopping -- Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay -- as well as several stalls of local crafts and souvenirs. Within easy walking distance of the dock are several downtown landmarks including the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (which dates back to the mid-19th century). ►Getting Around Taxis: Immediately outside Heritage Quay you'll find plenty of

taxis for hire. The government has a system of fixed rates on island and the taxis do not have meter, so it's better to negotiate a fare before leaving. The drivers are friendly and knowledgeable. Public buses are more affordable but less reliable. For the more adventurous, car and scooter rentals are available at the cruise port Rental Cars: Avis (268-462-2840), Hertz (268-462-4114), Dollar (268462-0362) and Budget rental car companies are available in downtown St. John's. Guided Tours: Island Safari (4801225) offers half-day excursions to the more remote parts of the island with spectacular vistas and scenic stops along the way

St. John’s is vibrant and still has many vestiges of the destination’s British colonial past. Transition from sugar production to tourism has been gradual over the past 40 years and as such the country has not been overdeveloped with high rise hotels. Instead you will find a sense of charm, ample dining, shopping and local amenities. March, 2012 - A&B BUZZ

Don’t Miss… On Saturdays, check out the Public Marketplace at the bottom of Market Street. Local farmers fill the bins by 5:00 in the morning with fresh produce from Antigua and the surrounding islands. Ask for one of Antigua's small sweet black pineapples. Next to the fruit market is the Heritage Market, an arts and crafts market with hand made beaded and shell jewelry, leather sandals and other custom goods

Take in a cricket match, the national sport, at the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) in the heart of St. John's. Antigua's known having one of the highest ratio of professional cricket players per capita in the world

Historic Nelson's Dockyard, a natural "hurricane hole," once housed 17 of the Royal Navy's warships during colonial times. Architectural remnants of the Georgian dockyard and officers’ housing, rest side by side with some of the largest sailboats and yachts in the world. From Nelson's Dockyard, hire a taxi to take you up the hill to Shirley Heights, the ruins of the former lookout fort of the Royal Navy. You can have a lobster lunch here while taking in the most spectacular vista in Antigua -- a panoramic view of English and Falmouth Harbors and neighboring islands of Montserrat and Nevis. Steel drum bands play on Thursdays and Sundays afternoons. A&B BUZZ – March, 2012

here, Done That For an unexpected experience, board the "Excellence" Catamaran, parked at Redcliffe Quay, for a quick day trip to Antigua's sister island, Barbuda. The vessel docks on a deserted stretch of pink sand beach and the excursion takes you to see Barbuda's frigate bird sanctuary, one of the largest in the world. Lunch and snorkeling gear are provided. Barbuda is about 28 miles from Antigua.

Jabberwock Beach is the best place to learn the sport of kite surfing; wind conditions always seem to be ideal, and private lessons are available. Or just lie on the beautiful deserted beach and watch the aerial acrobatics of those more adventurous than you. Betty's Hope, a restored 17th-century sugar plantation, featuring two wind mills shows you what a working plantation was like in colonial times. An active restoration of the plantation with dual capacity is underway and many of the mill's pieces of machinery have been restored to working condition. A visitor center, housed in a former storeroom, features a museum of estate plans, pictures and maps.

A short boat ride off the north coast of the island, leaving from the village of Seatons, takes you to Stingray City Antigua (268-462-RAYS), a protected reef area where you can pet and feed friendly southern stingrays in their natural environment.

For a taste of Italy in Antigua, head out to Harmony Hall, an Italian-owned and -operated local art gallery, sugar mill bar and restaurant. The gallery features local artists, as well as a selection of Italy's Deruta pottery, and the restaurant spices up Italian fare with a Caribbean flair. March, 2012 - A&B BUZZ

Top 7 Cruise Ship Movies

A good movie can take you on a virtual cruise. These seven legendary movies are linked to cruises or ocean liners and will connect you to the aura of cruising. Some of them actually show very little of the cruise ship or were not actually filmed on a ship, but they evoke all of the warm emotions often associated with cruising. Titanic (1997)

A Night to Remember (1957)

The sub-plot may be a little predictable, and you already know the ending, but the special effects make you feel like you are really on the ship. A great cruise movie. You will be humming Celine Dion's song for days after watching this one.

Another movie about the last night of the Titanic. This one shows up occasionally on late night television. Its realism is impressive, especially given that it was filmed over 40 years ago. Some people like it better than James Cameron's 1996 version.

An Affair to Remember (1957)

Although this movie is linked primarily to the Empire State Building in New York, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr meet and fall in love on an ocean liner.

Ship of Fools (1965)

Superb cast including Lee Marvin, Vivian Leigh, Oskar Werner, and Simone Signoret find themselves on an ocean liner in pre-World War II. Great character study and a good movie. Where else would you find such a diverse group of people other than on a ship?

The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

Movie stars Gene Hackman, Roddy McDowell, Ernest Borgnine, and Shelley Winters. Great upside-down sets and mindless entertainment. Whoever would have thought that Shelley Winters was such a good swimmer? Remember the theme song -- "The Morning After".

Out to Sea (1997)

The Last Voyage (1960)

If you are a Robert Stack or Dorothy Malone fan, you will like this movie. It is the story of a sinking cruise liner (not the Titanic). The producers sank a "real" ship to add realism to the movie. BUZZ

One of the Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau treasures in their "grumpier old men" series. The comedic talents of these two geniuses make any movie they are in a joy to watch. The writers' take on gentlemen hosts on cruise ships may not be completely accurate, but is fun! March, 2012 - A&B BUZZ

Myths About Cruises Here are some issues typically raised around the water cooler, when an employee announces plans to go on a cruise. Although 12 million people will cruise this year, many avoid cruises because of one of these 10 myths:

1. I will get seasick. Many people fear seasickness; but today's cruise ships are very stable and this is a rarity. For those prone to seasickness, there are many over- the-counter remedies to alleviate symptoms.

2. I will get a stomach virus like

Norwalk virus. Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause gastroenteritis and this cannot be prevented by getting a flu shot. The virus can be found where lots of people in close proximity. Decrease chances of coming in contact with norovirus on a cruise ship by washing your hands frequently.

4. I have to dine at assigned

times and with people I might not like. Many cruise ships feature traditional seating for dinner, with assigned times and tables. Some have open seating for dinner, which means you can dine when you like and at different tables. Some include alternative dining venues, you can vary your restaurant choices and table mates.

3. Cruises are all-inclusive.

Most cruises are not all-inclusive. To keep the basic price low, most cruise lines charge for everything that could be considered "extra", from wine to bottled water. The basic cruise fare includes room, board, and the traditional amenities such as a swimming pool and entertainment. A&B BUZZ – February, 2012

5. Cruise ships are crowded. There is always a quiet corner to read a book or be alone with a spouse. Although a cruise ship with over 3000 passengers can seem crowded at times, it is no more so than most resorts.

6. Cruise ships are packed with

old people. Many cruisers are senior citizens, but most of these seniors are active, and have amazing stories about their life experiences. A general rule is the longer and more expensive the cruise, the older the passenger. Sailing ships and those with water sports appeal more to a younger crowd.

7. I don't like beaches, so I won't like cruising.

Since most cruises go to the Caribbean, many people associate cruising with beaches. But a cruise is more than sitting in the sun by the pool, sandy beaches, or sparkling blue waters. Cruise ships visit every continent, and anyone can find a cruise destination that appeals to them.

8. Cruise ships are packed

with party people. Most mainstream cruises are marketed to multi-generational families. Although you will find partiers on a cruise ship, you will also find teetotalers, passengers of all cultures, races, and ages. The one thing all cruisers have in common is a love of travel and having fun.

9. Cruise ships

are dangerous. Like flying, cruise ships seem to have gotten a bad rap about danger. They are actually very safe, and with over 11 million people cruising each year, the crime rate is very low. There are steps you can take to help ensure a safe cruise vacation.

10. Cruise ships are boring.

You can be as active (or inactive) as you like. Cruise ship activities range from working out in a high-tech gym to sitting on the deck and reading a book. You can learn a foreign language, how to play bridge, or how to dance. Enjoy Las Vegasstyle entertainment or a classical pianist. Many cruise ships spend all day in port, so you can explore all the fascinating parts of the world.

Special Needs/Accessibility Group Cruise to Antigua

E

rica Henry Jackman, Canadian Director of Tourism speaks with Keith Rashid, of Creative Travel, in Toronto about a recent cruise that was coordinated for a group of physically challenged travelers form Canada. A & B was one of the last stops on the cruise. EHJ: What were your expectations of this cruise? Did you have something specific that you want to see or accomplish while in Antigua? KR: We wanted to experience the local culture and get a better appreciation of the people who live on the island. Also we wanted to gain a better understanding of the sources of industry in the region, experience the local cuisine and ambiance of the destination. We were looking forward to an island tour with stops at Nelson's Dockyard, Shirley Heights for wonderful sightseeing and photo opportunities.

the Ministry of Tourism who came to meet and welcome the group on the pier was very heart warming and special. Visiting the disability centre and having the staff and clients welcome us was truly the most memorable event of the trip. EHJ: Is there special equipment that you needed while on your cruise, that you rather not bring from home? Were you able to find this equipment in A & B? KR: Arrangements were made in advance to ensure adaptive equipment was ordered and provided for duration of the cruise. Items such as raised toilet seats, commodes, hoyer lifts. We were happy with the equipment that was provided. EHJ: What items should special needs visitors take with them while on a cruise vacation?

EHJ: What made your Antigua experience unique?

KR Transfer boards to help people from their wheelchair to seat/bed. Equipment for motorized scooters and power chairs..

KR: Being greeted by various representatives and officials from

EHJ: If we (Antigua and Barbuda) could fix one thing in reference to

accessibility travel for special needs travelers what would it be? KR: To have more means of accessible transportation available to allow individuals who may be travelling on their own to access the island comfortably and at their own pace as opposed to being dependant on group settings to see the island such as: shore excursions by the cruise line. EHJ: How was your stop in A & B overall? KR: On behalf of the group, I wanted to express our thanks to the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Office for organizing the island tour. We can all safely say it was truly the most memorable island we visited during the week. The group is excited and wants to return next year, possibly to spend a week on the island to allow us more time to really experience the local culture and environment. A & B is considered an excellent option for families particularly during spring break and Christmas. Today’s families are very concerned about cost and value and the BUZZ often gets questions about whether cruise or all-inclusive resorts are better suited for family vacations in A & B.

Now that’s a tough one, since we think it is a matter of preference. Families often have their own motivations for travel and preconceived expectations. So the decision becomes a measured one. But here are just some of the considerations that families should weigh in making their decision about whether cruise or all-inclusive resorts are best for them.

Check the cost for children

When pricing out family cruises and all-inclusive resorts, consider the cost for the children and how children are being defined (what ages). Some allinclusive resorts and cruise lines allow kids to stay (or sail) free. Others charge a nominal fee or significantly reduced rate, depending on the age of child. A&B BUZZ – March, 2012

Compare what’s included

On a typical cruise, accommodations, meals, snacks, use of the ship’s facilities (pool, kids club, fitness room), and onboard activities/entertainment are all included. Add-ons like shore excursions, gratuities and visits to the spa tend to cost extra, and you may want to check whether non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages are part of the deal. In comparison, all-inclusive resorts typically include gratuities, beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and non-motorized water sports, while golf, spa treatments and off-site excursions tend to be extra. You may want to confirm whether the resort includes transportation to and from the airport.

What activities are available?

With multigenerational travel on the increase, a successful family vacation has something for everyone, young and old. Many family cruises and allinclusive resorts offer a wide variety of activities and entertainment that cater to all age groups. However,

one thing to note is that many cruise lines do not allow non-potty trained children to use the pools, even if they wear swim diapers. All-inclusive resorts in A & B offer variety of activities, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, ATVs, hiking.

Determine the kind of experience you want

A cruise gives the benefit of seeing multiple destinations in a single family vacation, which might be appealing to some travelers. There also are more than 20 cruise ports around the United States, including Boston, Galveston and San Diego, so if you live within driving distance, you can skip the airfare. On the other hand, an all-inclusive resort may be a better pick for travelers who want a longer time in one spot to experience the full offerings of the resort, island and/or country. Tips for Cruising On Your Own

It Costs More If you're not sharing with someone else you will be paying more for your cabin, ground -transportation and some tours. However, there are ways of reducing your spending. Not ot every potential guest has an endless travel budget and the cruise lines reach out by offering a range of accommodation options. Instead of choosing a prestige suite with verandah, singles can opt for a well well-appointed ocean view or inside staterooms. Cut down on amenities -- fresh flowers and champagne are lovely in your room but you can have a fabulous time without them. Once you sail with a cruise line you are on their mailing list. They want to keep you as a return client so they will ply you with Early Bird specials and coupons. Hold on to them, they just might come in handy on future cruises.

Cruising is a Growing Travel Option for Women The female-friendliness of cruising, especially women travelling solo is growing in popularity. Women in search of “unplugged vacations,” are also looking at cruises as an option. A & B is considered an extremely safe destination with a security presence that gives women traveling alone a sense of comfort. According to Elma Pigott Humphries of Antigua Vacations, because we live in a coupled world, the ship's guest list tends to reflect that demographic. During the day women can do whatever their heart desires - sleep in late or get up early to work out in the gym. Many women don't need a partner to read a good book, take an excursion, listen to a lecture, enjoy a cooking class or learn to line dance.

Month. A&B.

It’s especially fitting that they call a cruise ship ‘she’ for she is pregnant with a thousand adult embryos who long to stay forever warm and sheltered in this great white womb.

Make New Friends Use the formal dining room to jump jump-start relationships. There is open seating for breakfast and lunch each day of the cruise and with hundreds of guests the odds of meeting interesting people are high. For the evening meals, set tables are assigned and that guarantees that you'll be enjoying fine dining with the same eight to ten companions every night. Soon you'll all be comparing notes about how you spent the day, what you bought and where to meet up for the evening's entertainment.

- Helen Van Slyke, writer

Meet Other Singles Tell the dining room maitre 'd that you're interested in meeting other single passengers. Cruise lines usually have a Singles Table that you can be seated at if you choose. Read the ship's daily newsletter to find program activities or shore excursions that cater to those travelling on their own.

BUZZ Worthy Features – A&B Women in Travel

A&B Women in the Travel Business We spotlight five female leaders in Travel and asked:

Q: If you could choose a legendary woman (living or deceased) of any

nationality, to be your cabin mate on an ultra exclusive luxury all women's cruise to A and B, who would you pick and why? What local attraction would you recommend that your cabin mate "must see or experience" in Antigua and Barbuda?

Veneta Burton, Pirates of Antigua Cruise, Managing Director

Pia Baptiste, Managing Director, Tropical Adventures

I would take Oprah to Barbuda. Although she has been to Antigua several times, this would be her opportunity to see our sister island in all her glory, unspoiled, remote but not isolated. We would walk on the 17 unbroken miles of pink sand beach and share stories about the island and the only footprints we would see is each others. http://piratesofantigua.com/

I would recommend a visit to the beautiful low bay in Barbuda. I am sure my cabin mate will be astonished by the pristine crystal clear waters and tranquility of the area. http://www.tropicalad.com/

A: The person I would pick as my cabin mate would be Oprah Winfrey. I would choose Oprah because of her energy and strength and she has the ability to make others laugh. She is a people person and is well rounded and open to new experiences.

A&B BUZZ – March, 2012

A: There are so many women I could choose. I grew up in Holland and throughout my childhood there was always one woman who fascinated me very much. This is why I choose her! Anne Frank because she could journal the trip really well .Also her excitement from seeing new places would be a great experience to share.

Elma Pigott-Humphreys, Managing Director, Antigua Vacations, LTD

Jacqueline Cort, Villas at Sunset Lane, Owner and Chef

A: I would choose Maya Angelou. I consider her to be a woman of stature and strength, a great listener, a woman with dignity, of strong spiritual values, who is also intelligent and hardworking - a woman who can truly represent me.

A: I would choose Patricia Roberts Harris, the 6th United States Secretary of Health and Urban Development who died in 1985 of breast cancer. Mrs. Harris was not only a beautiful black woman but a very smart and brilliant person. She always came across with such grace as she tackled one highpowered political appointment after another. I really believe if we were cabin mates, there would have so much I could learn from her in terms of being a very effective leader.

I would recommend that Maya “see/experience” Nelson’s Dockyard National Park which would give her a glimpse of our heritage and culture. The dockyard and surrounding forts (Dow’s Hill Multimedia Centre and Shirley’s Heights) are a multifaceted component of our heritage. Visiting these sites would give her an appreciation of our heritage and lifestyle - how far we have come, and where we are going.

I would highly recommend the Magnificent Frigate Bird Sanctuary which is the main tourist attraction on Barbuda. All of my guests LOVE this day-tour. This unspoiled mangrove habitat is a mere 35 minute boat commute from the Codrington Wharf. The Frigate birds are listed as endangered and this only adds to their allure and mysticism. http://www.villasatsunsetlane.com/

KC Nash, Author

A: My ideal cabin mate would be Katherine Hepburn, because she was a woman who loved adventure, hated being bored, and always added life to everything around her. The voyage would be very interesting!

This venue also showcases the cultural side of Antigua & Barbuda -- Home to the Sunday Night Lime, Seafood Fridays, Antigua Sailing Week and other festivals and events which bring all types of peoples together with a common cause. Our celebrations show that we are a people of resilience who can rise above the past, and move towards the future as one. antvacation@candw.ag

One of the things I would recommend she do in Antigua and Barbuda, knowing her love for adventure, would be to take a Caribbean Helicopter ride around the island and to see the volcano in Montserrat – a rare opportunity for anyone! http://www.kcnash.com

Things to do in Antigua & Barbuda

Interview with Conrad Pole, General Manager, Antigua Pier Group. BUZZ What can visitors expect when they disembark in Antigua & Barbuda?

CP: Visitors are welcomed by the sound of steel pan music, congo drums, and calypso or soca music, along with warm and friendly greetings from our tour operators, taxi drivers and vendors. There are so many ways to explore the island: taking an island safari tour or a day cruise onboard a Catamaran, visit one of our 365 white sand beaches, do a canopy, eco or zip-line tour, enjoy our local cuisine at one of our local restaurants, or just take stroll around our city and shop in our exquisite duty-free shopping complex. There is so much to see and do, the possibilities are endless!

BUZZ: What differentiates Antigua & Barbuda from other destinations?

CP: Our beaches are definitely one of the best A&B BUZZ – March, 2012

features. Also, our culture is very rich in terms of its historical background. Antigua’s National Parks reflect the diverse ecology, history, and biodiversity of the island. With four stunning parks, there is a wide range of natural and historic sites to visit. With the only continuously working Georgian Shipyard in the world, Nelson’s Dockyard retains its eighteenthcentury charm with original, restored buildings and also serves as a world-class marina, hosting yachts from around the globe. Additionally, our twin sister island Barbuda, boasts the World’s largest Frigate Bird Sanctuary and a 17 mile long pink sand beach which was recently renamed Princess Diana Beach, to honor the Princess’ love for Barbuda. Princess Diana took many vacation trips to Barbuda with Prince William and Prince Harry when they were youngsters.

BUZZ: What is the largest number of cruise calls that you have handled in a single day?

CP: We have handled seven ships in a single. Although, our main cruise ports are currently designed to accommodate 4 post-panamax vessels when combined, we have other facilities like the Deep Water Harbor and Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbor, which are used when we have multiple calls.

BUZZ: What is the ideal number of calls that the destination can handle in a single day?

CP: The ideal number of calls that the destination can

handle in a single day is four. The two berths at the Heritage Quay Pier and two at the Nevis Street Pier allow passengers to disembark downtown in the heart of St. John’s and our shopping complex.

BUZZ: What are some of the iconic things that

visitors must see or do in Antigua & Barbuda to have the ultimate experience? CP: For the ultimate experience, I would recommend a visit to our sister island Barbuda, for a more intimate experience with a 17 mile pink beach, Circumnavigation Catamaran tour, that gives you the opportunity to view and cruise around the island, have a delicious local lunch on one of our small uninhabited islands, and do some snorkeling. And while on board, dance to our sweet soca music and indulge in our island rum punch. I would also recommend a beach tour where you can travel to a few of our finest beaches, take a swim in our tranquil waters and have lunch at one of our exotic beach bars. And finally, a zip-line tour through our natural forest reserves. This is another thrilling “must do” experience!

BUZZ: If you could invite a famous person, living

or deceased, to visit Antigua & Barbuda via cruise ship, who would you invite and why? CP: I would invite the First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, to visit Antigua & BUZZ

Barbuda. In my opinion, she is a tastemaker and one of the world’s most influential persons and it would be a prestigious honor and opportunity to have her experience Antigua & Barbuda. It would also allow her the opportunity to get a first-hand experience of our culture and island-life, with the hope that as a global icon and influencer A&B would get significant exposure. After all most of the household travel decisions today are made by women and this would go a long way in promoting our product in the United States, our largest source market.

BUZZ: What would you recommend on the itinerary for this famous guest?

CP: On the First Lady’s itinerary, I would recommend a red carpet welcome in Heritage Quay and a VIP reception to meet with our Governor General who is also a woman. Also as part of the welcoming party would be Prime Minister, the Commander of our Military and Armed Forces and other dignitaries. I would recommend an official visit to the Prime Minister’s Office, Parliament, Government House, Nelsons Dockyard, a helicopter visit to Barbuda with a brief tour to one of our charitable organizations like the Sunshine Home for Girls. http://www.cruiseantiguabarbuda.com/index.html BUZZ

A&B BUZZ – March, 2012

The History of Cruise Tourism in A & B St John’s has evolved into one of the most “Cruise Friendly” environments in the entire Caribbean. The once derelict, worn out looking waterfront in St John’s, has been converted into a bustling commercially driven entity, providing significant employment emanating from the fastest growing Tourism entity. In Antigua & Barbuda, vendors have been organized into thriving entrepreneurs for the first time, as they now have a captive market coming directly to their areas of operations and multiple vendor markets have been set up to capture some of this new found business.

T

he potential for Cruise Tourism was first manifested in Antigua & Barbuda in the 1980’s, with just a handful of Cruise Lines docking at the then commercially functioning port at Deep Water Harbor, that facilitated mostly containerized traffic and cargo boats. Today the landscape and topography of the destination has changed, as the old Cargo port has been replaced by two new Ports. The Capital City of

Taxi Operators is another group that has developed successfully to handle the growing cruise industry and there has been a significant increase in taxi operators. In the past, taxi operators were only able to ply their trade at the airports or hotels as they waited for stay over visitors to arrive by plane and they request sightseeing tours. The St John’s Taxi Association has been designated to operate and transport the thousands of cruise passengers across the island from the two new cruise ship ports, thereby creating hundreds of jobs and generating significant economic activity throughout the destination. An Overview of A & B’s Cruise Industry .

BUZZ What are A & B’s strong points as a cruise destination and what are some areas that can be improved?

Interview with Nathan Dundas, President, Antigua & Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association BUZZ How long have you been in the Cruise

Industry and how did you get started in the business? ND: I have been in the Industry now for 22 years. I started as a Port Agent and then moved into the Cruise Tourism sector, because there was a need to focus on the industry as it was only being marketed by the Government at the time and needed private sector partnership.

BUZZ What are some of the elements/attributes that make A & B special as a Cruise port/destination?

ND: A&B was the first destination in the entire Eastern Caribbean to provide four (4) Cruise berths for Cruise ships calling, thereby indicating how serious we are about our Cruise business. A& B has been publicly praised by the Cruise Lines as the only destination in the Caribbean that has a Cruise Tourism Association, comprising a public & private sector partnership and this has been touted as a winning model for other destinations A&B BUZZ – March, 2012

ND: We offer over thirty (30) different types of Tours including the unique Nelsons Dockyard in English Harbour, that is the only existing Georgian naval facility in operation in the western Hemisphere. We have had three (3) of our tours operations win Top Awards for a number of years from Princess Cruises Lines. We can develop some more of our attractions including Betty’s Hope and other areas to increase our attractiveness to the visitors.

BUZZ What percentage of visitors disembark in A & B? How (if at all ) has this changed in the past 5 years? What can we do to reverse this trend?

ND: I would estimate based on the overall Tour figures that at least 70 % of the visitors disembark in Antigua with the intention of exploring our beautiful island, to shop, visit our casinos and be a part of our cultural experience. This is exceptionally high compared to other ports and is due in my estimation to the fact that the Cruise Ports are located directly in the City. Passengers can walk from the ships gangway and a few steps, they are in the heart of the city. This applies to both Heritage Quay and the Redcliffe quay.

BUZZ How has the industry grown in the past 5

years and what are some of the trends that you can attribute to this growth?

ND: There has been noticeable growth in A & B since 2003 after we built the second pier. Visitor arrivals practically doubled from 300K to 600k passengers on an annual basis. So clearly, the berthing opportunities provided, with an additional Pier resulted in increased calls to our destination. We also engaged in joint marketing of the destination with the Ministry of Tourism (now the Tourism Authority), the Antigua Pier Group and the Antigua & Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association, forming a tripartite team to collectively market to the cruise line,s resulting in increase numbers.

BUZZ How has A & B's Cruise industry been affected by the economic crisis?

ND: The Economic Crisis has effected the industry in A&B, and this is clearly evidenced by a decrease in spending power of visitors. While passengers on prepaid Tours, did take their prearranged tours, many independent passengers did not go on many tours, nor did they spend very much in the duty free and retail areas. We therefore saw it fit to engage the vendors and the Taxi drivers in a public awareness program to concentrate on hospitality and service as much as possible, to focus on inviting visitors back and to ensure that they remembered our high levels of hospitality. With an increase in singles and women's groups cruising these days how is A & B perceived as far as: • Offering safety and security • Activities for solo travelers • Antigua is viewed as a safe destination by all

including singles and women that arrive at our destination. We have significant and visible security presence at our ports of call as well as patrols on the various popular beaches across the island. Our Tour operators have catered for the solo travelers with adventurous tours including Zip Lining, Kayaking, Safari tours and the list goes on.

BUZZ If you could wave a magic wand what is the

one thing that you would create, change or improve in A & B's Cruise product? ND: My magic wand would be to get one of the major cruise lines to invest in A&B in a joint partnership and guarantee us year round business to ensure sustainability of the product to the benefit of all our stakeholders. This would not only be a win -win for us but also the Cruise Lines.

BUZZ What are some of the long term plans to

ensure that the destination remains competitive? ND: To remain competitive A&B must continue to position itself as a destination for growth and sustainability which includes establishing an adequate budget for marketing. We have to develop and implement a strategic 5-10 year plan of where we need to be in our industry. There is also a need to provide consistent training to our various service providers. We also need to ensure that we upgrade and maintain our infrastructure on a regular schedule, including the port, attractions and tour sites BUZZ March, 2012 - A&B BUZZ

BUZZ Worthy Features – Off Deck: Adventures Beyond the Shore

Revival by the sounds of Nature

I

n the great opera of nature, whales sing haunting songs, dolphins yap and click and the trees rustle in the wind. Science now proves these natural sounds can make you happier and healthier. A cruise around A & B will help you check out these natural sounds. Upon your return be sure to download these sound clips from iTunes to create cherished memories of A & B.

Ocean waves soothe the weary and restless! We all rest better near the beach and people who listen to ocean sounds are likely to fall asleep 50% faster than those with no noise at all! Studies show that the sounds of the ocean increase relaxing theta waves associated with the early stages of sleep. Waves also

create “white noise” the same soothing sound we hear in the womb that induces a sense of calm. Hear the BUZZ: Relax on the shores of one of the destination’s deserted beaches like Jabberwock Beach or Rendevous Bay for a “white noise” experience.

Bird calling eases stress! Morning has broken, blackbirds have spoken! Let the sound of chirping birds ease your tension. Bird watching often reveals the harmony of bird songs, the speed and frequency of which induces relaxing theta waves in the brain. Birds are associated with sunshine and love and their songs also

bring a sense of hope and cheer. Hear the BUZZ: Take a trip to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary to see the “man of war,” Barbuda wobbler and a variety of rare birds. Connect with a birding pal at http://www.birdingpal.org/Anti gua.htm

Stingrays reenergize you! Stingrays are fascinating creatures, as they float and fly through the oceans, they appear almost birdlike in their motions. Stingrays are related to sharks (some folks call them “flattened sharks), stingrays often make a screeching sound

at low slow frequencies. When we hear this sound, our brain waves mimic these sound frequencies producing slow delta waves, associated with deep restorative sleep. Hear the BUZZ: Swim with Stingrays at Stingray City to ensure a good night’s sleep.

Dolphin clicks improve healing! Known for their clicks and whistles, dolphins emit a range of sound frequencies that are similar but much more powerful than ultrasound emissions used by doctors to heal tissue. Dolphin therapy has been developed to

achieve less scaring and recover quicker recovery from surgeries. Hear the BUZZ : Take an island tour with Eli Fuller of Adventure Antigua to explore the southern coast of Antigua and some of the best spots to watch the dolphins. BUZZ March, 2012 - A&B BUZZ

travels to A & B. Please describe a kind deed that you have done for a client or colleague, or tell us how you have been on the receiving end of a thoughtful gesture, while on vacation in A & B.

Answer of the Month for February, 2012: I went to Barbuda in 2011 for a day trip. I had heard about the lobster and that it was one of the things that you should try in Barbuda. I went on a sail around the island and mentioned to the tour guide Jahla that I would like to have a lobster lunch. To my amazement about 20 minutes later, Jahla dove into the ocean and after a few trips, we had four live lobsters in a pail. Our next stop was his mother’s backyard to grill the lobster for lunch. It was such an amazing experience and a very thoughtful gesture. Jahla said to us “The bible says ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find.” Mary Farrell - Smyrna, GA
