In February we focus on matters of the heart, whether through

ardent celebrations of Valentine’s Day or recognizing Heart Disease Awareness Month. A & B will celebrate the destination’s love affair with travel agents and focus on all aspects of their well being to support their continued success and the pivotal role that they play within our tourism industry, the lifeblood of the A & B economy.

We understand the value travel agents bring to customers during the selection and reservation process. They play an important role in the chain of excellent personalized service that A & B has become renown for, and we are very proud of this as a destination. Despite the growth in online activity and transactions, a large part of A & B’s travel business is still conducted the traditional way -- with the expertise and recommendations of valued travel agents. The Love Travel Agents issue is our way of reinforcing our commitment to our travel agent partners and to inspire, motivate and celebrate their efforts in selling A & B. As we strengthen our relationship, we will engage the entire travel industry community, so that we can collectively grow the business and motivate even thousands more visitors to discover our twin island paradise!

Later this year, we will launch a new destination website which will have an area specially-designed to educate and incentivize the agent community, in selling all aspects of our tourism product. The main goal will be to certify at least 300 A & B Specialists each year, in various emerging segments of the travel business. including demographic and psychographic niche market travel.

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of February is National Heart Disease Awareness Month - the #1 killer of women today. Here are four suggestions women (and men) can take to stave off heart disorders and maintain a healthier life. Almost every minute a women dies from heart disease, according to The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. One of the most alarming facts about this statistic is that many don’t know that women’s symptoms of a heart attack are different than men’s. How many deaths could be avoided each year if people knew what symptoms to watch out for? According to the FDA’s Office of Women’s Health web site, in addition to the well-known heart attack symptoms, women may also experience some of the following sensations or feelings:  Extreme fatigue or loss of sleep  Chest problems such as difficulty breathing, aches, heaviness, tightness or burning feeling  Pain between the shoulders and above the navel  Chest pains or tightness that extends to other areas like the jaw, neck, shoulders, ear, or the inside of the arms Even though heart attack symptoms and risk factors can differ in women there are certain prevention steps that remain the same for both genders: A&B BUZZ – February, 2012

1 Lose weight.

Obesity is one of the most significant risk factors in developing cardiovascular disease. To discover your risk of developing heart disease and what you can do about it, visit the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/obesity/lo se_wt/recommen.htm

2 Get active.

Men and women alike need to exercise often. And a key to consistent physical activity is finding something you enjoy doing that gives your heart a good workout and fits into your everyday life. A growing number of women have found the ideal answer in electric bikes. National sales increased 67% in the US alone. Electric bikes like the US manufactured Optibike are a terrific way to get out of your car and ride more for a healthier heart, without sweating. After all, the key to exercise is actually doing it and with an electric bike exercise is fun. http://optibike.com/

3 Prevent diabetes.

Diabetes is dangerous as a disease by itself but it has also been medically linked to an increase risk of heart disease and heart attacks. Preventing or treating diabetes is one of the smartest, hearthealthiest decisions you can make. Discover more about the connection between diabetes and heart health at http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/DM/pubs/complications _heart/index.htm#4

4 Relax.

More studies show that stress really does harm your mind and your health. And heart disease is no exception. Everyone is affected by heart disease today whether it’s a family member, yourself or a loved one. 1. Share ACTUAL or VIRTUAL Hugs

Hugging or a pat on the back are small gestures that can raise levels of oxytocin, the "bonding" hormone that strengthens the emotional connection between two people. Even in the online setting, research shows that Facebook can elicit a similar sensation as cuddling. "Poke" a travel agent, client or loved one on Facebook to strengthen your connection.

2. Light a vanilla candle

The soothing scent of vanilla triggers the release of serotonin, the "feel good" brain chemical that helps regulate the mood. Studies show that when serotonin levels are elevated, we feel more relaxed and inclined to show love and appreciation for each other.

3. Compliment and Congratulate

Love your client's cufflink or new hair cut? Make someone's day even more special by offering a sincere compliment. Take time to say congratulations on a recent major or minor accomplishment. Not only will it increases their self image, but also their favorability ratings of you and your service

4. Share Ardent Memories

Invite a longstanding client or former colleague out for coffee or cocktails, just to share treasured memories or your common love for a destination like A & B. Bring along photos, postcards or other memorabilia to revisit and celebrate past trips and experiences. Memories can warm the heart and rekindle feelings, friendships and business relationships.

5. An A & B Toast for Two! Share a red, tropical, Champagne cocktail, spiked with watermelon, guava or pomegranate juice (great antioxidants). Celebrate Valentine's Day with a Toast to National Heart Month with a fellow travel agent, client or loved one. A&B BUZZ – February, 2012

BUZZ Worthy Features – Physiology of Dining in A&B

“The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it.” – Rudyard Kipling

It is said that the discovery of a new dish does more for human happiness than the discovery of a star. You will find that one of the most exciting experiences in A & B is the cuisine. “The food in A & B is stimulating and rewarding in the same mouthful,” says Gulliver Johnson, author of Table Manners.

Food is one of the few things we partake of routinely that can please all of our senses all at once. For many while on vacation, cuisine is one of the highlights of the experience. In A & B there are more than 100 restaurants, offering a range of

flavors. From the sizzling in the pan to the artful arrangement on the plate to savory scents, to the texture on the tongue and the spicy taste that awakens our palate, food offers a heightened sense of life and a bit of euphoria, if we allow ourselves the time and freedom to appreciate it.

On Tuesday, February 14, we will celebrate ‘Have-a-Heart Day’ by being more conscious of our food choices. Along with regular exercise, healthy food choices are imperative for good cardiovascular health. Here are two Recipes from Top A & B Chefs. Try these at home to celebrate Hearty Eating among loved ones and friends Chef Shawnee Braggs A&B Buzz: Please list a few suggestions and tips to ignite or re-ignite the sparks of romance for couples traveling to Antigua & Barbuda, which could be used as selling points for the Destination. A&B BUZZ: Describe your most challenging A&B booking? Diane Goclowski of Sundial Travel answered: A gentleman called one day, said he’d found us in the Affluent Traveler magazine and was looking for information on Hermitage Bay in Antigua. Since I had visited this property on a FAM trip, I was able to answer all his questions and he was anxious to book and travel right away. That’s where the road got a little bumpy… Hermitage Bay was not available for the number of nights he wanted. With the support of Deborah Traussi and the hotel managers, we were able to resolve the situation and in the end, we had a very happy client. Beth Mollo of ProTravel International answered: I love planning vacations to Antigua & Barbuda and cannot think of a challenging booking. The only challenge lately has been getting space. Also I prefer working with preferred tour operators like Travel Impressions etc. and many of the small fabulous resorts are not featured though tour operators. Sugar A&B BUZZ – February, 2012

Ridge, Nonesuch Bay, once I identify the perfect resort for my clients the rest is seamless. So happy that American Airlines has direct flights. Liz Pozind of GWE Travel/AMERICAN EXPRESS answered: No problem to A&B, it is so beautiful. Arthur Mehmel of TourScan Caribbean Vacations answered: In June 1988, I just became a travel agent specialized in the Caribbean, I booked my family at ANTIGUA VILLAGE, and I flew on LIAT to Dominica and Nevis to learn about three islands. Danny Ang Travel Consultant of Personalized Travel Services for AMEX Canada answered: To have the hotel to gurantee king bed. But in the end, its always work out as clients are either getting upgraded or getting complementary breakfast or lunch. Francine Grenier of UNIGLOBE, (Canada) answered: None were very challenging. It’s a beautiful high end island, with great hotels, just a matter of matching client to property.

BUZZ: What scents do you often associate with A&B?

Diane Goclowski of Sundial Travel answered: Every time I smell seafood chutney, I’m taken right back to my times in Antigua. Beth Mollo of ProTravel International answered: Sea breezes, lemongrass, jasmine, suntan lotion. Flowers and gentle rain. Liz Pozind of GWE Travel/AMERICAN EXPRESS answered: Beaches Arthur Mehmel of TourScan Caribbean Vacations answered: The smell of spilled beer at the Shirley Heights Sunday party. Danny Ang Travel Consultant of Personalized Travel Services for AMEX Canada answered: Long miles of white sand beach. Francine Grenier of UNIGLOBE, (Canada) answered: Hmm, nice salty breeze.

Danny Ang Travel Consultant of Personalized Travel Services for AMEX Canada answered: RIO by Duran Duran and the theme to the television show THE LOVE BOAT.

BUZZ: Name one thing in A&B that you would love to experience?

Diane Goclowski of Sundial Travel answered: The feeling of waking up in my hillside suite at Hermitage Bay and being inspired by the breathtaking view. Beth Mollo of ProTravel International answered: Hermitage Bay on a Beth holiday, Shirley Heights and R&R in Barbuda. February, 2012 - A&B BUZZ

BUZZ Worthy Features – Star Travel Agents

Travel ravel agents are still doing considerable business, despite the growth of online booking sites. To understand the role of travel agents, one must understand the needs of American families for various service-oriented people:

● We need -- electricians, plumbers, doctors, delivery drivers ● We do not need, but they enrich our lives -- plastic surgeons,

accountants, physical trainers ● We need in a crisis - lawyers, midwives, car mechanics, psychiatrists

Travel Agents Attend to Details: I want to be lazy during our honeymoon and also to be lazy when it came to planning. Not that I didn’t want to put time into it, but with a new job and a wedding rapidly approaching, I just did not have time! When we booked our honeymoon it included every detail of our travel plans. So when we landed in Antigua and Barbuda we had a transfer ready for us. By using a travel agent, all of the details were taken care of. Travel Agents – Satisfaction Guaranteed It is reassuring that we have a reliable contact if anything goes wrong during our travels. While I did not expect mishaps it was comforting to know that if we were unhappy with our room or some A&B BUZZ – February, 2012

aspect of the service, we had someone to intercede on our behalf. Our travel agent listened to what we wanted, worked within our budget, accommodated us and was incredibly nice and responsive throughout the entire process. With a travel agent, we would not be stuck dealing with issues ourselves. “Potential Sourmoon Story’ While I had casually browsed beautiful honeymoon destinations soon after we got engaged, it was a Sunday night when we decided it was time to start making some decisions. By Tuesday night, we had everything booked and ready to go. In a mere 48 hours we were able to complete the stress-free process of arranging everything

needed for an amazing honeymoon experience! How is this possible? The answer is simple: The services of a travel agent. Travel Agents are Knowledgeable We had no preference in terms of location other than that it be warm and sunny. Even when narrowing it down to all-inclusive resorts, there were so many options throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. You can do lots of browsing online, but the fact is they all have websites with photo galleries so appealing that you want to book immediately. How do I know which one is the best? The fact is, I didn’t know. But our travel agent did!

LOVE: We love to have travel agents in emergencies. When we sit in JFK Airport during a snow storm in danger of missing our connecting flights, it is nice to have a travel agent take care of the problem.

LIKE: We like travel agents when we run into snags after weeks of internet research. When the hotel we want gets mixed reviews on Tripadvisor “Home away from home”, “Bates Motel”, “Perfect”, “Short on Service.” Or when Expedia, Orbitz, & Kayak all return the same message “No flights were found between Roanoke, VA (ROA-Roanoke Regional) and Antigua, (ANU) that matched your request.” These are times when the opinions and assistance of travel agents really matter.

NEED: Many believe in outsourcing everything in our lives, because time is money. We have pool boys, money managers, personal chefs, chauffeurs, nannies, life-coaches, private fitness trainers and personal assistants. Why not have travel managers?

● We LOVE travel agents in emergencies, ● We LIKE travel travels in times of uncertainty, ● We NEED travel agents to simplify our lives.

BUZZ Worthy Features – Cheers or Chaser?

Cheers or Chaser? What is your Cocktail Personality? DIP AND SIP? During the booking process, any insights into clients’ cocktail preferences can be helpful in planning their dream vacations in A & B. A & B cocktails have their own unique characteristics. Made with distilled beverages such as gin, vodka, whiskey, tequila or rum, cocktails are created by mixing an array of unique liqueurs, fresh garnishes and other local ingredients.

A penchant for a particular cocktail can provide insights into guest/client vacation preferences in A & B. This may be the season to justify networking and having a drink with new and existing clients. Bartender’s Magazine reviews several cocktail personalities and whether used for cheers or chasers, cocktails are synonymous with certain personality types.

Planters Rum Punch This drink made from local rums is indigenous to the Caribbean. It points to a trendy, humanitarian, who is chic, open minded, fashion forward. This exciting, personality type can be described as a true connoisseur of life who is ready to explore all that A & B has to offer.

BUZZ Tip: Strong interest in historical attractions, music, culture and English Harbour Rum.

RECOMMEND: Copper and Lumber Restaurant’s Sea Food Fridays or Bubba’s Restaurant in Buckley’s

A&B BUZZ – February, 2012

Chocolate Martinis By adding chocolate to a celebrated drink such as a martini, signals a dual personality with two equally compelling sides– refinement and professionalism balanced with a flirty, passionate side. This personality personifies the sophistication of the martini glass.

BUZZ Tip: Strong interest in spas, hiking, golf and fine dining. RECOMMEND: Carmichael’s Restaurant at Sugar Ridge Restaurant or private dining or a nautical massage on a yacht like Sea Spa.

Tequila This drink typically appeals to the young at heart and signals someone who is vivacious, vibrant and ready to paint the town red or party like it is 1999.

BUZZ Tip: Strong interest in night clubs and

casinos.

RECOMMEND: Grand Bay Casino at Dickenson’s Bay, Pap Zouk’s Restaurant or Abracadabra’s

Whisky Sour This drink signals a sense of maturity, mystique and patience. Whisky, with an acidic touch of lime with an added a good dose of sugar, is a mellow drink that forces partakers to slow down. In A & B Hennessey is the whisky of choice, and for partakers It often takes a while to figure out every facet of their complex nature.

BUZZ Tip: Strong interest in adventure such as sailing kayaking or wind surfing and loves all types of sea food. RECOMMEND: Enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, Caribbean style at Harmony Hall. Enjoy local art exhibits and visit the recently opened Yacht with their own Dragon Fleet.

Glass of red wine

BUZZ Tip: As far as cuisine this personality is “epicurious.” There is some partiality to waterfront views that allow for people watching.

RECOMMEND: Dining Alfresco at Calabash Restaurant or Sunday Brunch at Gibson’s Restaurant

Selling A&B with a Business Card How can my business card help me sell A & B? Before there was LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, the quickest mode of exchanging personal information was the business card. However, person-to-person contact is still the first way we make business contacts and how we let potential clients know the best ways to reach us, who we are and what we do. Business cards are still just as important as ever.

that although we offer more than beaches, that one of the destination’s strongest selling points was still our beaches. Moreover, having an abundance of pristine beaches to choose from, was not something that we could afford to undersell.

The A & B Business Card. The A & B Business card features one of the destination’s pristine beaches, Low Bay in Barbuda. This 17-mile stretch of deserted beach captures the true essence of A & B and reinforces the destination’s tag line. “The Beach is Just the Beginning.”

At the end of a presentation or networking activity, very little has to be said about what the destination has to offer. From what we are told, the destination speaks for itself. We believe that while we cannot capture the entire picture on our business cards, this distinct image speaks volumes about our product “Most business cards are boring; they don't let us know what people do,” says Joseph Martin of Photogenesis Print Shop in Antigua.

The Antigua and Barbuda logo and tagline were created in 2007, through the collaborative efforts of A & B’s marketing team. The process took several months but after much discussion, we soon realized

One of the easiest ways to give your business cards personality is through color. Color can amp up the text on your message and company logo. “Four-color has gotten cheaper,” Martin says. “You can put your

picture on your business card, and if you're an artist or a photographer, we can put one of your pieces on one side and your contact information on the other.” Paper stock is another way to add flair to your personal message. Options include glossy, matte and smooth finishes, UV coating, and stocks that allow for raised print and embossing. Foil can bring a bit of flash, making your card easy to find in a business card file. Company logos are important, but if you're an independent contractor or a job seeker, Martin suggests not using clip art to add visual interest to your business card, since you may find that you lack originality. “Don't use stock clip art from Microsoft,” Martin says. “You may find the same thing on a business card of a similar business down the street.” With the many ways people can reach you, remember

there's only a 2 by 3 inch space to get all your information on your business card. “KISS: keep it simple, stupid,” Martin says. “All you need is your company name, your name, what you do, and your mailing address, phone number, email address and website. As for the other contact information, any web-savvy person can find that on the Internet.”

Aviation History of A&B V. C. Bird International Airport (IATA: ANU, ICAO: TAPA) is located on the island of Antigua, 8 km (5.0 mi) northeast of St. John's, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda. Antigua’s airport was originally operated by the United States Army Air Force. It closed in 1949 as Coolidge Air Force Base and upon the closure it became a civil airport. It was known as Coolidge International Airport until 1985, when it was named in honor of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird (1910–1999), the first prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

constructed circa 1943. Villa Airport was located on Lower Fort Road in the residential area known as Old Runway. The runway length was approximately 3,000ft and it accommodated BWIA Douglas DC-3 and Lockheed Lodestar aircraft, both of which seated over 20 passengers. A&B BUZZ: When did the first international flight arrive in Antigua? What airline and type of aircraft was

it? What city did the flight originate from? Mr. Joseph: In 1955, BWIA Viscount, with a capacity of 55 passengers, flew the Trinidad-Barbados-AntiguaBermuda-New York route. A year later, Pan American DC-6, seating more than 60 passengers, initiated a service connecting New York, San Juan and Antigua.

the potential for civil aviation development in Antigua, established the Directorate of Civil Aviation for the Windward and Leeward Islands here in 1957.

It should be noted that from 1955 all aircraft operations were transferred from Villa Airport to Coolidge Field.

On the heels of this, the British government donated a new modern terminal building to Antigua which was opened in November 1960.

A&B BUZZ: What was the frequency of air service in the first year? Mr. Joseph: The regional carrier BWIA operated weekly flights through Villa Airport and later serviced the country with daily flights at Coolidge Field. Pan Am also operated a daily service at Coolidge. A&B BUZZ: How did air service grow in the first 5-10 years after air service began? What factors contributed to this growth and expansion? Mr. Joseph: Air service at Coolidge grew by leaps and bounds in the first 5 to 10 years. First of all, Frank Delisle inaugurated a new service in Montserrat but transferred the headquarters to Antigua on 20 September, 1956. That airline is LIAT. The British government, realizing

A&B BUZZ: What upgrades were made to the airport terminal and runway during the first 10 years? Mr. Joseph: The air terminal building was extended westwards to accommodate gift shops and additional airline offices. In 1963, with the opening of the new air terminal building, the main runway was changed from Rwy 10 to Rwy 07. The runway which was originally 5,800ft was first extended to 6,300ft before being further extended to 6,900ft to accommodate the first commercial jet service to Antigua – the Pan Am DCA Clipper 219 non-stop flight from New York which arrived at 3:15 pm on 15 December, 1961. In 1962, the runway was stretched even further to 7,500ft to handle BOAC’s Boeing 707.

Another extension to 9,000ft took place in 1972 so that BOAC could commence a non-stop LondonAntigua service. A&B BUZZ: What was the reaction by the locals to having an international airport and air access to the rest of the world? Mr. Joseph: The airport had sufficient and varied traffic to be recognized as international hence the name change to Coolidge International Airport. The entire populace was proud of the development and tended to boast of it. A&B BUZZ: To what extent did air service help shape the local economy? Mr. Joseph: Air service brought on the genesis of tourism. Investors moved in and established new beachfront properties such as Anchorage Hotel, Long Bay Hotel, Curtain Bluff, and Half Moon Bay, among others. A&B BUZZ: Approximately how many hotels did Antigua have when air service first began? Mr. Joseph: When air service began, Antigua had five hotels: Antigua Beach, Globe, Jardines, Kensington and Happy Acre.

www.facebook.com/antiguabuzz www.twitter.com/antiguabuzz Weigh in on February’s Reader Question Q: During the Month of Love, we invite you to share heartwarming stories about your travels to A & B. Please describe a kind deed that you have done for a client or colleague, or tell us how you have been on the receiving end of a thoughtful gesture, while on vacation in A & B. January 2012 Reader Question Q: What is the best service that you (or a client) experienced from an A & B resort employee? Describe how (if at all) this service influenced the vacation experience.

Answer of the Month for January, 2012: I arrived in Antigua for a 3-night FAM trip and as I was waiting to be picked up an attendant approached me with a sign that said DELEGATES. I gave my name and was ushered to a waiting car, driven by a police officer. “Not a shabby welcome,” I thought to myself. After about 20 minutes into the drive, I asked the officer what St. James’ Club (SJC)was like and I was told that the conference was at Jolly Beach. It was then that I realized that something was wrong. “What Conference?” I asked, reaching for my itinerary, since I did not recall seeing a Conference listed. I then learned that there was a “Conference” being held i at Jolly Beach for Caribbean Leaders and the officer had assumed that I was a part of the official party. I explained that I was here for a FAM Trip and my destination was St. James’ Club(SJC). The officer who was on schedule decided to venture to Jolly Beach anyway to get the situation sorted out. The officer accompanied me the reception area to explain to the desk clerk, Tashika what had happened. Tashika, apologized for the “mix up” although she had nothing to do with it. I was given a cold towel and welcome drink as if I were part of the DELEGATION. Tashika immediately called her manager to ensure that the “correct” guest was located at the airport and ensured that she was picked up. She then called a taxi and I continued on the scenic route to SJC. I arrived 2 hours later, with an unplanned adventure trip through Fig Tree Drive under my belt. Along the way we passed Curtain Bluff and Carlisle Bay, two properties that were not on my itinerary but I had sold in the past. Talk about a FAM Trip with time well spent! Wendy Bowser, Orlando, FL
