Here’s How: 1. Brainstorming

More than forty guests from Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa witnessed the emergence of leatherback sea turtle hatchlings at Dickenson Bay Beach. It had been more than 60 days since the imposing leatherback sea turtle affectionately known as ‘Lady Sandy’ made her way to Dickenson Bay shores to hatch approximately 100 eggs. In the wee hours of the morning on Thursday, June 21, approximately 20 hatchlings came out to the delight of onlookers. This was followed by a nest excavation in which guests and staff members had the opportunity to guide the hatchlings. “It was an incredible once in a lifetime experience and I know that guests were thrilled to be a part of it,” said an ecstatic Shernell Connor who is the Director of Guest Services at Sandals Grande Antigua. Thanks to the assistance of the Environmental Awareness Group’s Antigua Sea Turtle Conservation Project, another 27 healthy hatchlings emerged from the sand and made their way successfully to the sea.

Hold a brainstorming session. Let each child describe his or her version of an adventurous family trip then parents can add their own vision. Pull out the common denominators, such as hiking, kayaking or horseback riding. Let kids know up front which ideas have to be discarded because there's not enough time for such a trip or if it won't fit the travel budget

2. Collecting Information Let the kids help gather information about trips that include the selected activities. Together, use Web search engines to learn more about these activities, locales where you can enjoy them and tour operators who focus on your interests.

3. Crowdsourcing Visit various websites or blogs to get ideas or solicit suggestions and recommendations or share trip preparations.

Interviewee: Nicola Nash, Board member of the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) www.eagantigua.org A&B BUZZ: When is the nesting period for both the Leatherback and Hawksbill Turtles respectively? Nicola Nash: Leatherbacks: Feb-June Hawksbills: June-Nov

BUZZ: Where can both species of Turtles be found?

NN: Leatherbacks that nest in the region are thought to live in the deep areas of the Atlantic ocean. To nest, they migrate to the Caribbean or anywhere near equator‌ to warm water areas. Hawksbills: live and nest in Caribbean or other warm water areas. For Antigua & Barbuda, many live near our reefs year round.

BUZZ Worthy Feature – Hawksbill & Leatherback Turtles

BUZZ: What is the length of the tour?

NN: EAG’s offshore island turtle watching excursions are approximately 3 hours long. Mainland excursions are 3-4 hrs long.

BUZZ: What should visitors bring with them when taking the tour? NN: Mosquito repellent, impermeable clothing for if it rains and if you’ll care, small red light if you have one. Turtles generally prefer to nest on darker beaches and may abandon nest-creation if bright lights are shone at them so large flashlights…any white light…should be avoided. Hatchlings find their way back to the ocean by moving towards the brightest light source. This works even on a moon-less night. White lights will divert them, sometimes into on-coming traffic. Turtles can’t see red so red lights are safe. Cameras can be used but no flash photography.

BUZZ: What makes these tours unique?

NN: Tours are led by trained guides. In addition, our offshore island tours are met by scientists who have a wealth of knowledge about sea turtles. Sightings can never be guaranteed but guests usually have a chance to see the turtles up-close, which is a treat since many have only seen them in pictures. Our guests sometimes have the opportunity to get involved in the nesting process by helping to count eggs as they are laid. They also can witness how turtles are tagged and the general data collection process. They get to witness the hatching process as nestling emerge from their nest to scamper to the ocean and see how a nest is excavated to release any babies that were not able to break through to the surface of the sand on their own.

BUZZ: What are the major similarities and/or

differences between the Leatherback and Hawksbill Turtles? NN: Similarities: both are sea turtles and are endangered; breathe air; and follow a similar nesting procedure where they use their back flippers to dig a hole in the sand after which they lay their eggs then cover the hole with sand before returning to the water….never to return to see their babies emerge.

Leatherback Hatchlings - Courtesy of Nicola Nash Differences: Size: mature leatherbacks are 6-7ft (up to 2 metres) long and weigh 1500-2000 lbs while hawksbills grow to about 3ft and 200-250 lbs. Preference of area for nesting: leatherbacks prefer wide, bare sandy areas while hawksbills prefer sandy areas with vegetation. Leatherbacks usually avoid inclines on beaches (it must be difficult to haul their huge mass up a slope) but hawksbills can and have been observed tackling inclines to find a suitable nesting site. Diet: leatherbacks eat mainly jellyfish while hawksbills feed mainly on sponges. They inhabit different areas just prior to nesting: before nesting leatherbacks prefer beaches with access to deep, open water with no reefs to impede

Hawksbill & Leatherback Turtles In Antigua & Barbuda continued

The Environmental Awareness Group of Antigua & Barbuda is a not-for-profit, nongovernmental, volunteerbased organisation born over 23 years ago. It is dedicated to building education among residents of and visitors to Antigua & Barbuda about our environmental resources, advocating to government and others about the need to manage them effectively, and to conservation, where ever possible, of these natural resources. www.eagantigua.org

their path while hawksbills actually live around reefs so this is not a factor for them. Leatherbacks can hold their breath for longer under water than hawksbills. Carapace: leatherbacks have a flexible, leathery ‘shell’ while hawksbills have a more typical hard, bone-like shell. Egg size: leatherback eggs are tennis-ball sized while hawksbills have ping pong ball-sized eggs. Number of eggs laid: leatherbacks typically lay 80-100 while hawksbills lay 150-200 eggs per nest. Interestingly, only about 30-40% of a leatherback’s eggs will mature. Number of nests: an individual leatherback will lay 3-8 nests per season and a hawksbill will lay 3-5 nests per season. In Antigua, the same leatherback has been observed nesting on different beaches in a single season while hawksbills tend to lay all their nests on the same beach. For nesting, they are thought to return to the same beach where they were born.

BUZZ: What does the Turtle Watch

Tour include and what is the cost? NN: The turtle watching excursions include general information (brochure or verbal) on sea turtles. All tours are guided by trained volunteers or scientists who can answer most, if not all, of your questions about sea turtles.

Guides are equipped with red lights and may have extras to lend to our guests. Offshore island tours cost for EAG members is EC$30 ($25 for children) and, for non-members, EC$50 ($45 for children). That includes the boat trip. Mainland tours cost for EAG members is EC$15 ($10 for children) and, for nonmembers, EC$30 ($25 for children). Reservations are required.

BUZZ: What are some interesting

learned more about how they nest and what they do, I just wanted to learn more. Then, I saw them up close for the first time and was completely hooked. How the babies know to go to the ocean, the whole nesting process, what the mother’s do…it all fascinated me. We don’t understand it all yet…it’s still a very mysterious process. I think it’s very worthwhile learning about them and helping to conserve them. I feel like I’m helping and being a part of their process. I feel very special trying to do my best to help them.

facts about the Hawksbill Turtles? NN: Their beak is specialised for biting through sea sponges. Sponges are made of needle-like spicules so most other animals can’t eat them but the hawksbill beak is specialised to break through them. In the 1800s-1900s, there was major harvesting of hawksbills for their beautiful shells for making jewellery. This contributed significantly to their decline. It is now illegal to kill these globally endangered sea turtles. Hawksbills prefer vegetation for nesting, including amidst roots and bushes. They generally return to nest on same beach Hawksbill nesting Courtesy of WIDECAST where born some 20+ years ago.

BUZZ: What inspired your interest in

Teens and Travel T

I

"If the teens are happy, everybody is happy.” Teens are often the most enthusiastic of travelers, but their interests -and schedules -- often aren't aligned with their younger peers or parents. That means that while parents might be happiest striking out at the crack of dawn to explore an archeological site at Betty’s Hope, many teens would rather sleep in, “pig out” with a late breakfast and then “chill” at the pool until early afternoon. These realities make travel with teens quite a challenge, particularly since more multigenerational families are part of the family trip. Planning is critical and parents can make youngsters a part of the planning process by finding out some of the activities on their “mini bucket lists.”

"Most teens are online now, and they're going to start lining up ideas of what to see and do," he says. "I find teens are fabulous at bringing in great suggestions." says Brad Anderson, co-president of America's Vacation Center/American Express.

One way to keep boredom at bay is to ensure that teens have fun ways to burn off excess energy. Maybe it's a trip to the volcano in Montserrat, whale or turtle watching. These are experiences that teens should be encouraged to write about in a school report upon their return. Below Fort Barrington, in Deep Bay, it is just possible to see the submerged remains of a once fine steel sailing barque of 866 tons called the “Andes.” She had sailed from Trinidad for Chile on the 5th of June, 1905. Her cargo was 1,330 barrels of pitch.

The graveyard of sugar and slave trade ships

T

By Michele Henry, Curator Of The Museum Of Antigua & Barbuda, W.I.

There are many dangerous reefs and headlands around the coasts of Antigua, but these are not as numerous as those of Barbuda. Nevertheless many shipwrecks and mishaps have been recorded. In the inventory following, there are 164 wrecks for Antigua and about the same for Barbuda. The main reason many fatalities have been recorded from Antigua is that there were three principal ports of call, St. John’s, Parham and English Harbour. Through the ages these destinations have attracted many sugar and slave trade ships into the two former ports, while English Harbour has attracted ships of the Royal Navy and later vessels of the yachting industry. Barbuda’s fatalities were never bound for the island, they wrecked instead on their routes by happenstance, whether by storm or darkness.

The Andes’ Final Resting Place

The Andes’ Anchor

The Andes is home to many underwater organisms. A wonderful place to scuba dive.

The oldest recorded shipwreck for Antigua was of a Spanish sloop in 1572, and the most recent ones are of the numerous yachts heading for English Harbour, and finding themselves further to leeward than they thought, ending up on Cades Reef. Some have mistaken the lights of the Curtain Bluff Hotel for those of English Harbour and have been lured onto that offshore reef. The management of the Curtain Bluff Hotel has always been of great assistance to these vessels. Many wrecks are attributable to bad weather. Several ships have foundered in the various harbours during hurricanes, while many were able to get off. In 1696, eighteen vessels were blown ashore at St. John’s and in 1707, all ships in every port of Antigua were cast ashore and again in 1722, thirty two were lost in the main ports of St. John’s and Parham. In 1972, the Government of Antigua prepared the Marine Areas Act to preserve the reefs, wrecks and adjacent wet lands. Diamond Reef off the north end of Antigua and Palaster Reef off Spanish Point, Barbuda were named a Marine Reserve, and it is hoped that other areas will follow. The wrecks are a part of Antigua and Barbuda's heritage.

The interior is encased in pitch pine, intending to secure the building from ruin during earthquake or hurricane. It has been described as "a building within a building". The Cathedral is dominated by twin towers at the west end and provides a distinct baroque flavour. They

are 70 ft high and the cupolas that crown the towers are aluminum in colour. At the time of erection, the edifice was criticized by ecclesiastical architects as being like "a pagan temple with two dumpy pepper pot towers", however in modern times the edifice has been cited as "the most imposing of all the Cathedrals of the West Indian Province". The market is opposite West Street Bus Station and opens from early in the morning. If you visit from 5.30am on Saturday morning, you will be astounded at the crowds of local villagers arriving with fruit and vegetables to sell, and empty shopping baskets to fill. The market hall is

relatively new, as the market used to be down the road outside. On Saturdays however there are many stall holders who set up their wares outside the market. Every stall sells different produce, breadfruit, mangoes, soursop, sugar apples, pineapples, dasheen, tamarind are just a few of the locally found fruit and vegetables. Antigua's Greatest Adventure Ride in the Heart of the Rainforest! Experience It To Believe it! Open 6 days per week (closed on Sunday) with tours at 9am and 11am and other times by previous arrangement. The Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tour is a unique eco-tour through Antigua's lush rainforest where you embark on an unforgettable journey through the verdant forest, high above the trees. After being fully briefed by our experienced Rangers, who will also assist you with the required harness and equipment, your exhilarating tour of the rainforest journey can begin!

A&B BUZZ – August, 2012

Full Canopy Tour approximately 2 1/2 hours Zip lining is on many people’s "bucket list", but just the thought of doing it is enough to really freak some people out. Understandably, being strapped into a harness, hung from cables high off the ground, and then zipping through the air at high speeds from tree to tree is not everyone’s idea of fun. Those elements may be overwhelming to kids and firsttimers Some lines are controlled speed (not too fast) and some of them are faster, where you will have to brake, though they do have a safety brake to help if you are approaching the landing platform too fast. The courteous staff (called rangers) offer a personal touch — welcoming people to come in and

sit a while before or after your tour. The rangers gear you up with all the required equipment to do the sport — harness, helmet, and gloves. As you are getting suitedup, they explain the skills required to zipline. Once they feel you understand what you need to do, they take you to a starter line that is closer to the ground and slower. Once you feel comfortable with beginner course, you go on some jungle lines, that have you speeding through the trees. From there, there are some lines that offer great views of the rainforest at Wallings and the surrounding area. Of course they have employees on each platform to clip you on and off the lines, and to make sure that you are doing well. www.antiguarainforest.com

Intergenerational Travel to A & B

For many baby boomers, spending time with their grandchildren is a favorite pastime and those who have an opportunity to travel with grandchildren to A & B can make this a fun and rewarding experience. The goal is to spend quality time with the people they love best, while enjoying a

unique travel experience. Picture this – grandparents, children and grandchildren, on a trip together in A & B. Perhaps the grandparents have visited A&B or another Caribbean island in the past and they want to share some of your fondest memories with their grandchildren. This is an

opportunity to strengthen the generational bond by creating wonderful travel memories, pursuing a favorite hobby or new activity together -- a cooking, pottery or scuba diving class. For those looking to create unique experiences, here are some recommendations:

PHOTOGRAPHY Photo sharing is the highlights of any vacation and most children love to take pictures. Disposable cameras are both economical and easy to use and several companies now make digital cameras for children ages three and up. In A & B grandparents and grandchildren

will discover unique sights, flora and fauna and also enjoy familiar activities in a new way.

Planning an A&B “Grand” Vacation

H

Here are six planning tips to help make the most of your multigenerational vacation experience.

BUZZ Worthy Feature – Intergenerational Travel

How To Have a “Grand” Vacation in A&B

Choose Your Time and Place

Pick a travel window that works for everyone in the group. This might mean vacationing during peak season – summer, Christmas and other school breaks. Consider resorts and tours that offer a range of indoor and outdoor attractions. Include dining options that the entire family can enjoy including preferences of vegans or those with dietary constraints.

Discuss Travel Plans in Detail

Ensure that everyone understands all of the travel details before the trip. Financial matters, schedules and, most importantly, expectations should be discussed in detail. Which places and activities are important to each traveler? Who will look after the children, and for how long? Be sure everyone is in agreement before you book your trip to A & B.

Smart Packing

Discuss ways to avoid duplication. If eight people are in the party, only one or two need to bring sunscreen or a first aid kit. Each adult traveler in the group should make a packing list. If you’re staying in a villa for example, determine what supplies to bring and what can be purchased locally. Don’t forget to pack some kid-friendly items -- microwave popcorn, DVDs or video games and floatable toys for the pool. Travel games and playing cards also come in handy.

Allow for Free Time

Too much togetherness can potentially ruin your intergenerational trip. If grandparents want some time alone with their grandchildren, Mom and Dad can go out for a romantic walk or enjoy a fine dining experience. Sometimes, grandparents also need a little time to themselves to rest or to watch evening television. By scheduling breaks and down time, each member of the group can “recharge,” which means that the times spent sightseeing together will be pleasant and enjoyable.

Plan for Health Incidents

It’s always a good idea to travel with a list of the medications that family members take regularly. Add your doctor’s and pharmacy’s telephone numbers to the list, and be sure you have your health insurance card with you.

Record Your Memories

Take photos, keep journals and collect brochures. Scrap booking is made so easy with many digital options. Intergenerational trips create wonderful memories that are worth preserving. August, 2012 - A&B BUZZ

I enjoy swimming and reading and aspire to become a neonatologist/pediatrician. I would recommend a tour of Nelson's Dockyard. This landmark is a part of our Irich heritage and helps to tell the story of how we have evolved over the past 300 years. Nelson's Dockyard was the center of British naval activity in the Leeward Islands for is now the center of our thriving yachting industry. It is a fascinating part of our history with so much to offer -- a museum, tours, sailing, restaurants and gift shops.

I like the outdoors and nature and would recommend that they visit the Antigua Stingray City. They can get an opportunity to learn about these amazing creatures and how harmless they are once you understand their habits and way of life, just like on National Geographic!

Most teenagers like listening to music and I would introduce them to our local music. Our carnival just ended and I would have them listen to a few songs that really showcase our culture. I may have to help them with the lyrics but the beats are so catchy, they would really enjoy it!

It depends on the time of year, but I would take them to see our Carnival,. I think they would enjoy some of the shows and encourage them to put on a costume and play Antigua “mas, to experience the music and dance and get a taste of our happy and fun culture.

I love animals and want to be a vet one day. So naturally I would take them to the Donkey Sanctuary. There are many stray donkeys that are taken here and the staff takes really good care of them. They can learn more about donkeys which are very nice animals and some of them are so tame they can enjoy a donkey ride.

I love art and I am always sketching faces, scenery or fashion. And I want to be a designer and artist one day. I would love to take a child from the United States to Harmony Hall on the Northeastern side of the island. There are so many paintings and a great restaurant with a kids menu. There is also a sugar mill that has been converted to a gift shop. I really like climbing to the top of the sugar mill and looking at the beach. I always have so much fun.

Sir Vivian Richards is one of our national heroes and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He is recognized all over the world as one of the greatest cricketers of all times. Our new stadium was named after him. I would take my guest to see the Antigua Recreation Grounds to see where Sir Viv made history and broke many records in cricket. I would also take them to see the house where he grew up and also drive by the house where he lives now. What are the biggest challenges in booking Caribbean weddings and honeymoons? Please describe your most challenging destination wedding or honeymoon booking? How did you handle this request? Looking back how could this "situation" have been avoided or handled differently?

Congratulations! Answer of the Month for June/July 2012:

A

My couple had won a free trip to Sandals and decided to upgrade and use this as part of their destination wedding package. It was the second time around for the bride and groom and a destination wedding was a convenient way to accommodate family and friends who were scattered across the globe. The major challenge was there were four children on the guest list and of course they would not be allowed to stay at Sandals. I was able to find a villa in Dickenson Bay to accommodate the two families with children and one of the grooms son’s from a previous marriage. The villa ended up being home base for the wedding and a local caterer was brought in to host the rehearsal dinner and wedding brunch the next day.

BUZZ BACK!

Feedback from BUZZ readers I just read your June issue and realized you are constantly giving the agents what’s new whether its culture, cuisine, and I can only imagine that a tropical panache awaits. Caprice Travel Michele Fazio 1201 Yonkers Ave. Yonkers, NY 10704

I find your circular the A 7 B BUZZ to be an enjoyable read and the level of details you put into it is rather refreshing and personable. Sharon Smith/Owner Islands Travel 805 933 9534 888 554 7526 www.islands4travel.com

I truly enjoyed your segment in the BUZZ that addressed highly rated hotels. But what's important is being kept in the loop about your monthly specials. Diane Goclowski Sundial Travel 999 Foxon Rd North Branford, CT 06471 203 484-1190 800 562-1127 http://www.sundialtravel.net

I like the fact that I can click, connect, and read any one of your previous issues of the BUZ. Now that gives anyone over 20 reasons to fall in love with one of your twin islands. Gina Miller Altour 1270 Avenue Of Americas New York, NY 10020

Your A & B BUZZ publication I find to be extremely honest and you always find a way to contribute to both of your twin islands in sharing both of their stories as one destination.

Truthfully, I take pleasure in reading your BUZZ, your articles and topics are astounding, and who better to get such details from than an islander like yourself. Thank you for the shared experiences.

As a team leader I must say my agents, and my agency find your Buzz news worthy, useful, informative, and far better than expected. It is a great tool to have, especially when you have to give clients pertinent information that you can not readily access.

Your newsletter is educational, edifying, and enlightening, and as the saying goes, “ Knowing is half the battle!” All About Honeymoons Donna Blasi 5 White Deer Lane West Harrison, NY 10604

The A & B BUZZ allows one to explore your destination without ever having been there. With that said it allows us to explore the destination and return home having had a great "virtual" vacation.

What I like about monthly correspondence in the BUZZ, is that it gives one a good look into your destination, from weddings and honeymoons , to “ will you”? “to I do!” I truly enjoy the fun topics and products for every occasion! Anywhere Travel Paula Yaasky 151 S. Main Street New City, NY 10956
